Dear Davis Academy Families,

IT

was an incredible feeling to be able to begin the school year in-person on August 17th! After months and months of tremendous effort by medical experts, professional advisors, administrators, faculty and Board members on our Davis Together Task Force, we reopened our campuses for students and faculty with loud horns honking during carpool, big smiles behind our masks and long-anticipated distanced hugs.

Reopening our school for the 2020-2021 school year, and ensuring a vibrant and meaningful learning experience for our children, during a pandemic, is an immense task, and yet the resiliency and commitment of our Davis community has never been stronger. While many new health-related procedures, schedules, protocols and practices govern our days, as of publication, we are together, learning, laughing, praying, collaborating, and growing and this is not something to take for granted, while the entire world continues to address the COVID-19 public health crisis. With the incredible dedication and professionalism of our faculty and staff, the drive and enthusiasm of our students, the love and support of our parents and the generosity of many caring community members, we have created our own “unique normalcy” where our children continue to thrive in our classrooms, on our fields, in our gymnasiums, science and innovation labs, and even virtually as necessary.

The future trajectory of the virus remains uncertain and yet we are ready to embrace various scenarios: On-Campus learning, Concurrent Learning, Hybrid Learning or Amy Shafron Head of School Distance Learning, as conditions may dictate. Regardless, we have already witnessed first-hand the incredible spirit of The Davis Academy in ways that we could never have imagined, with an unwavering collective commitment to ensuring that our students continue to receive the instruction, challenge, love and care they deserve.

During these unprecedented times we are perhaps more deeply united than ever. As a kehillah, we share common values, hopes, and expectations of one another, as we work together, and pray for, the health, safety and strength of our entire community.

We hope you enjoy reading about the many exciting school activities we have experienced since welcoming what we know is a historic 2020-2021 school year.

campus Election 2020

During election week the Davis kehillah remained focused on mutual respect and understanding, and living our values. As the school commemorated the country’s 59th presidential election, students celebrated the importance of voice and choice, and the right to vote. Dressed in red, white and blue, Lower School students “traveled” through an interactive museum “The Road to the White House” and had their own mock election. Middle school students prepared for the election for weeks under the leadership of our extraordinary Social Studies teachers.

Behind the Mask

The year started with an opportunity for students to learn about each other through a “Behind the Mask” exercise. Mrs. Peskin, Lower School Counselor, shared with her students, “even though this year we are all wearing masks, we get to be exactly who we are.” Exercises in self expression and learning about each other permeated the start of school with Lower School students creating artistic portraits of themselves, adding words that define them, while Middle School students created mindmaps.

Fourth Grade Archeologists learn about Native Americans

Fourth grade students rolled up their sleeves to look for artifacts at an “archaeological site” at the Lower School campus.

Students were thrilled to discover a variety of objects that were “left behind by Native Americans”: from arrowheads, to tools made of bones, shaped stones, to pieces of pottery and wooden utensils.

They examined the evidence and deduced that the first Indians were hunters, farmers and artists. In addition to appreciating the rich and beautiful Native American culture, students were simply amazed by how much we know about Native Americans before European contact without having written history.

Boosting Physical Health

Although many things feel beyond our control these days, we do have the ability to be creative and integrate physical activity into students’ daily life while finding new ways to boost resilience and health. Exercise is crucial for physical health and mental well-being during these challenging times, it boosts the immune system, prevents weight gain, reduces stress and anxiety, and improves confidence and self-esteem. Even when sports have been put on hold, Mechina through eighth grade students have a variety of structured and unstructured opportunities throughout the week to stay safe and active within their cohort groups. Students follow a formal physical activity program in addition to daily active play and a variety of fun recreational physical activities.

Do you have what it takes to be a Freedom Fighter?

Fifth grade participated in a virtual field trip to the Atlanta History Center. They traveled back in time to learn what it takes to be a Freedom Fighter and explored the Civil Rights era and connected it to social movements throughout time. Guides from the museum had an engaging session where they “met” leaders of the Voting Rights Movement of 1946 and the Atlanta Sit-In Movement of 1960. In preparation for the field trip students participated in a self-guided, choose-your-own-journey digital experience to experiment with nonviolent activism. Students were inspired to see they can be the next citizens to take action in their communities.

Cultivating a Growth Mindset

Kindergarten students are cultivating a growth mindset by learning all about the power of the word YET. This concept, developed by well-known psychologist Carol Dweck, is based on the idea that you should continue trying if you haven’t accomplished something “yet”. It is a way to develop a “you can do it!” attitude and a type of “hope” instilled to work towards our goals. When students understand that they can “grow their brains” they know that mistakes are part of the learning process and that the effort required to achieve is what makes them better. This mindset affects the way students learn and the way they lead their life.

Tzedakah Project: Operation Isaiah Food Drive

This year second grade led a school wide tzedakah project, Operation Isaiah Food Drive. Students encouraged Lower and Middle School students to bring food items for the Kosher Food Pantry at Jewish Family & Career Services (JF&CS). In addition to students filling multiple bins, families made virtual donations to support this amazing project.

See Something, Say Something

In Guidance, fifth graders delved deeply into the idea of being an upstander—if you recognize that something is wrong, act to make it right. They discussed qualities of an upstander and determined if behavior described in specific scenarios were those of bystanders or upstanders, engaging in insightful conversations about when and how to involve yourself in an interpersonal tiff. Inspired by the book Say Something by Peter H. Reynolds, fifth graders used picture books and information on Greta Thunberg, Malala Yousafzai, Harvey Milk, Representative John Lewis, and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to create informative posters on how these upstanders said something to create change in the world.

Instilling a Sense of Wonder

Superb science education is essential for instilling a sense of wonder for the world around us and moving students from curiosity, to interest, to reasoning.

From Mechina through eighth grade, students have opportunities to engage in real-world applications exploring topics of interest and relevance. The science journey starts in Mechina, with time and space to observe phenomenons such as seeing objects that float versus objects that don’t float. The learning progresses as older students engage in problem solving and provide explanations of their thinking and why things happen. Over time, students are able to plan and carry out investigations and experiments, solve problems, create models, analyze and interpret data, construct explanations, and design solutions.

Guest Speaker: Dealing with Racism in Atlanta To kick off an exciting unit on social action integrated with our Language Arts curriculum, special guest Brandon Rowlett, shared his story with eighth graders about growing up in Atlanta and dealing with racism. Students picked novels with characters different from themselves to make them think about current events. One popular book choice was Dear Martin, written by Nic Stone, a novel exploring racism and racial profiling in a coming of age. Mr. Rowlett, an Atlanta native, spoke candidly with students about being a poor, bi-racial male, and raised by a single mom who worked multiple jobs to pay the bills. Due to academic scholarship, Brandon and his three siblings attended private school and later he graduated from Emory University. Students were captivated by the speaker’s stories from high school and college focusing on race relations, navigating life, and how those experiences contributed to the person he is today.

Reimagining

Jewish Life T

he Jewish people are resilient. When the world around us changes, we choose to be proactive. Jewish history reveals that our rituals and traditions are constantly evolving and taking on new forms. Here at The Davis Academy we know that Jewish traditions take on even greater significance when world events such as a pandemic threaten to disrupt so many of the things we hold dear and that bring a sense of order to our lives.

Students design beautiful leaves with a Torah passage of deep personal relevance in anticipation of their B’nai Mitzvah and present them in a meaningful ceremony.

Even as so much has changed around us, our Davis Academy Menschlichkeit Values have not. They are our guide as we continue designing, creating and collaborating in new ways to bring to life our student-centered approach to Judaism and Jewish life.

“We have embraced technology by moving Torah services and Kabbalat Shabbat to Zoom and by bringing Jewish communal experiences into the classroom, such as celebrating B’nai Mitzvah and reading Torah for classmates in Middle School. In the Lower School, students use their time in tefillah reflecting on the holidays, Torah portions, and have time for personal prayer.” said Ilan Weismark, Jewish Studies teacher.

One poignant example of this year’s particularly proactive approach was our reimagined Simchat Torah celebration.

Unable to gather as an entire school community surrounded by our unrolled Torah Scrolls, we instead brought meaning to the day by inviting a Sofer (Torah Scribe), to teach the students about the many fascinating details of how a Torah scroll is written. After an engaging and entertaining learning session with the Sofer, students at all grade levels had an opportunity to contribute to an artistic rendering of their very own Davis Academy Torah Scroll. The artwork includes beloved passages from the Torah as well as the names of all the weekly Torah readings and special quotes about the meaning and relevance of the Torah in our lives today. Pieces of this artistic and imaginative scroll will be displayed on both campuses as a reminder of this special day.

Eighth-grader, Rachel Kurgan, said “I was really glad the Sofer talked to us for Simchat Torah. While creating my parsha artwork, I was able to dive deeper into the meaning of the parsha as I created the art. This year Simchat Torah was definitely different but I think it was still important. I really like that we are able to participate in Jewish celebrations this year, as it shows so much about our community.”

How are we inspiring learners to create, connect and learn?

STRATEGIES IN A PANDEMIC

M

aintaining connections, channeling creativity, and continuing to learn are critical for students to thrive especially during a pandemic. As humans are feeling limited in their social interactions, and in their ability to move throughout society, we have fostered a safe environment that promotes mobility with innovative community-building learning opportunities. From the youngest learners to our senior students, we have reimagined school so that our students continue to benefit from an incredible Davis experience.

Building community through coding has served our students skillfully as they collaborate to create. Integrating computational thinking into their library visits, Mechina and Kindergarten students examine how to create an algorithm by specifying directional arrows for their robot Cubetto, to travel from one community location to another [ A]. For example, students evaluate how many steps and in which direction

to program their Cubetto so it can travel from its home to the nearest tree using a story map that serves as a directional grid. Through this process, students work in pairs within their cohorts to help each other navigate a successful path to reach the intended destination.

Working with robots to problemsolve, collaborate, and integrate computational thinking skills gives students the opportunity to “move through� the pandemic together.

Middle School Network Sherpas, a student leadership group focused on technology usage, is applying their coding skills to generate mobility through an alternative approach [ B]. Merging the programming skills they are learning as a Network Sherpa with their Language Arts coursework, they are creating an interactive bulletin board. Using an online program that simulates the coding process, students learn how to code a micro:bit, which is a small computer that includes sensors, an LED light display, buttons, and other inputs and outputs. Once they master the programming language, they make their own code to control how the micro:bit moves. They are building these automated elements in relation to dystopian themes within their Language Arts novels, The Giver by Lois Lowry and Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix. This cross curricular exhibit serves as a conversation piece that promotes both reading and digital

literacy. Upon completion of this project, the Network Sherpas are developing a mobile app with drag and drop programming that reinforces more complex layers of coding.

As students continue to explore creative approaches to remaining active during the pandemic, they are also learning about movement through drone technology [ C].

Seventh graders explore how drones use simplified mechanisms with the help of computers to achieve flight stability.

Investigating the principles of flight gives them the opportunity to get outside, plan safe flight paths, and explore an innovative invention. In addition to more recent inventions, technology exploratory students are also going back in time to discover primitive technologies. Students examine the creation of fire as one of the first

technologies to alter the course of civilization. Using wood sticks, a bow drill, and dryer lint, the goal is to create friction to generate enough heat to ignite a fire [ D].

Analyzing primitive and modern day technologies, students are also challenged to consider the ethics, such as privacy issues, behind technology usage. This includes learning about global positioning systems, or GPS, and how humans can communicate through radio waves [ E]. In exploring the evolution of this type of technology, students had the opportunity to engage in geocaching as an archaic form of wireless communication. Dissecting the evolution of technology has felt particularly relevant as families are rediscovering favorite past-times and reevaluating how, when, and why we choose to engage with technology.

We consider ourselves very fortunate to have both of our children in such a special place with such talented and caring faculty and staff. As the old adage goes, “you don’t realize what you have until it’s gone.” This is so true for many circumstances in life; however, it hit close to home for our family when we realized how much we missed The Davis Academy, last school year, when our oldest daughter went to another local school for 2nd grade after spending her first couple of years at Davis. People continue to ask us why we ultimately decided to return to Davis.

While our experience at the other school was a positive one, it cannot match the nurturing environment, the sense of community, the academic excellence, the individualized attention, or the feeling of safety that the Davis Academy provides. We made our decision to return to Davis back in early March, and we do not take a day at this school for granted, pandemic or not. To say we are so grateful to be back is an understatement!”

The Value of the

ARTS during a Pandemic

O

ur entire days are spent consuming and responding to information. It is through art that students find release from anxiety, negativity and stress. Whether students are learning a new painting technique, playing the drums, or performing a short play, the arts program is essential to the Davis experience. It delivers creative freedom and has a direct impact on well-being and happiness while building community. “While there has always been a great deal of value in arts education, there has rarely been more of a need for it than right now, during the Covid-19 pandemic. This year, students and teachers alike are having to adjust to a new normal and deal with many emotional extremes,� says Rebecca Ganz, Lower and Middle School Visual Arts Teacher.

Visual Arts: Resilience & Innovation

“Opportunities to self express, to take risks and to collaborate, has led to respect for and appreciation of others’ unique skills, connecting students to one another while creating a sense of community. I have seen my students of all ages take comfort in their artwork and art creation. There is a therapy that happens when creating art that brings peace of mind, positivity, and a sense of escape. Creative practices also help with one’s ability to adapt and cope with the unknown. Students are developing resilience, innovation, and inventiveness when working out visual problems, all of these being key attributes to handling our world right now and making the best of a tough situation,” says Rebecca Ganz, Lower and Middle School Visual Arts Teacher.

Theatre: Community & Collaboration

In theatre, On-Campus and Concurrent Learning Path students collaborate, create, and perform together. For example, eighth graders completed the challenge From Page to Stage: New Yorker One Act Plays.

Students created, wrote, designed, performed and produced one act plays based on a New Yorker magazine cover of their choosing.

In addition to performing the plays, each group designed a Playbill cover and a short preview trailer about their show. Kendrick Phillips, Director of Visual and Performing Arts shared, “this is a tremendous opportunity to learn together as a Kehillah, as we continue to tell and share our stories and raise our individual voices to share a narrative and create a collective identity which strengthens our core Davis Academy values of Community, Respect, Spirit, Wisdom and Righteousness.

Seventh grader, Aubrey Nelms, recently won Artsonia’s National Artist of the Week contest for grades 7th - 9th. Artsonia is the world’s largest collection of student art, published by teachers and students from around the world. Aubrey’s submission, which received over a thousand votes, focused on various pencil shading techniques including changes in pressure and the use of a tortillon (paper blender) to achieve a wide range of value (lights and darks).

Her composition showed one-point perspective to create depth.

Music: Meaningful Connections

Throughout the years, The Davis Academy music curriculum has been proven to deliver an ample array of benefits. From Mechina to eighth grade, students find music classes magical, exciting and rewarding. “Music unveils beautiful inward and outward connections. Whether my students are listeners, creators or active participants, I have witnessed how music evokes feelings, promotes self-expression and facilitates positive behaviors and connections among them,” said Michelle Gimpelevich, Lower School Music Teacher. Now that everyone is spending more time at home and have limited options for socializing, music helps students to take a break from the digital world, lift their mood, and facilitate craved connections with friends and loved ones in different and meaningful ways. It gives students a sense of freedom and unity. Robert Michek, Lower and Middle School Music Teacher said, “I love sharing my life-long love for music with my students. There is nothing more rewarding to see and hear children create and perform music for their family and peers.”

Learning Community Grandparents & Special Friends Day Although our buildings are closed to visitors, the hearts of students, faculty and staff remained wide open for Grandparents and Special Friends. In addition to joining a beautiful Kabbalat Shabbat with Lower School and Middle School students over zoom, guests had a wonderful time at a Lunch and Learn session with Head of School, Amy Shafron.

It was a special day that brought our community together through music, ruach, and learning.

Travel the World with Ebooks Davis parents had the opportunity to learn how to access thousands of free eBooks through The Davis Academy’s digital library. In a virtual session, participants brought their mobile devices (iPads, iPhones, Kindles) and got started with e-Reading in no time at all! This program was offered by Davis Parent University (DPU), a special learning program for families designed

by The Davis Academy PTO.

Makers Playground Did you know The Davis Academy has a Davis Maker Playground? A virtual playground for makers created by makers. This is a learning space that offers an array of games and activities to get students (and adults!) creating with their hands, hearts, and minds. Whether users are interested in graphic design, 3D modeling, music, coding or engineering, an ample array of programs and activities are ready to be discovered, such as: create your own Google logo; draw your favorite carnival food with Brush Ninja; record your own music with Incredibox; build a confetti launcher; program a virtual Bee-Bot and many more.

Cub Club & Mini Cubs Throughout the year, The Davis Academy offers incredible programming through Mini Cubs and Cub Club. The goal is to connect families with young children, through fun-filled, highly engaging programs designed to enlighten, inspire, and amaze children five years and under.

From music concerts, to art classes, to magic shows, and Jewish celebrations, all events are free and open to the community. Due to COVID-19, these events have been reimagined and successfully offered virtually. These are some of the events that have been offered this year: Li’l Shabbat from the Garden, Rock & Roll A Simchat Torah Celebration, Shake, Rattle & Roll, Be Kind Party, The Language of L.O.V.E. Professional Development The Davis Academy is committed to providing a robust learning experience and ensuring a safe and strong community. In preparation for the school reopening during the pandemic, some of the trainings teachers attended were: Google Classroom training; Reimagining school: Transitioning from Emergency to Planned Distance Learning; ISTE summer Learning Academy (International Society for Technology in Education); ASCD Virtual Conference: Respond, Reimagine, REstart (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development); Georgia Library Media Association.

Due to the unique circumstances and the increased funds needed by the school, The Davis Academy has created the 2020 Davis Together Giving Campaign.
