In Memoriam We remember Sam Tuck, z’l, beloved Davis leader and past Board President (2011–2014). His leadership and dedication left a lasting impact on our community. We hold his family close with love and deepest sympathy. May his memory be a blessing.

Dear Davis Academy Families, In this edition of The Journey, we celebrate the 2025–2026 school year— including the graduation of the Class of 2026—and the many accomplishments and recent milestones of our alumni. We hope you enjoy the photos and stories that capture the energy, creativity, and growth our students experienced throughout the second semester, along with a glimpse of the inspiring paths our graduates are pursuing nearby and around the world. This spring, our students have been busy on our athletic fields and on the stage, developing innovative projects for placement in the statewide technology fair and earning recognition in the C-SPAN national documentary film-making competition. They’ve served as student ambassadors and book buddies, filled bins with food for those in need, learned to code, chanted Torah, and traveled with classmates to other cities and countries. In so doing, they continue to discover the most important lesson of all: who they are and how they can make a difference. The impact of these experiences is reflected in the many pages ahead that highlight the journeys of our graduates. Davis alumni are truly everywhere— learning, leading, and carrying our values into the world. You’ll find them working in hospitals, courtrooms, and classrooms; on Wall Street and on Capitol Hill. They are scholars, athletes, artists, and changemakers—studying abroad, earning academic honors, launching nonprofit organizations, and actively standing up to antisemitism on their campuses. Their stories are a powerful continuation of the Davis journey. As we celebrate the achievements of our students and alumni, we also look ahead with excitement as we prepare for the next school year, when we will warmly welcome the next generation into our Mechina and Kindergarten classrooms, and unveil plans for what’s next for our Davis community. It is a thrill to see our Davis Academy kehillah continue to grow and thrive. As the school year comes to a close, we extend our sincere gratitude for your trust, involvement, and support—each of which helps sustain the extraordinary spirit of our community. Warmly,

A Historic Journey:

The First Davis Moms Trip to Israel In a moment when Jewish peoplehood feels both fragile and fiercely resilient, Davis made history. Early this spring, twenty-three Davis mothers boarded a flight to Israel, not as tourists, but as a kehilla. Led by three rabbis, all Davis moms, representing Atlanta’s largest Reform congregations, along with Head of School Amy Shafron, this first-of-its-kind Davis Moms Trip to Israel embodied what Davis does best: strengthening community through shared values, meaningful connection, and transformative experiences. At Davis, connection to Israel is not an isolated initiative; it is foundational to how students develop Jewish identity, pride, and a sense of peoplehood. Our children grow to understand that Israel is part of their story. At the heart of that journey stands the family. Parents reinforce curiosity, empathy, and commitment long after the school day ends. This year marked a rare convergence: for the first time in school history, three rabbis are moms in the Davis kehillah. Under the visionary leadership of Rabbi Loren Filson Lapidus (6th-grade parent and The Temple Rabbi), Rabbi Sam Trief (1st-grade parent and Temple Sinai Rabbi), Rabbi Rachael Klein Miller (kindergarten parent and Temple Emanu-El Rabbi), and Head of School Amy Shafron, with a grassroots planning group of Davis moms, the vision became reality. The invitation was intentionally inclusive, welcoming all Davis mothers of every background, level of connection, and stage of Jewish journey. Pre-and post-trip programming reinforces that the connection to Israel and to one another is a collective responsibility.

“The experience was layered with meaning. For the three of us, co-leading this journey was a rare gift, an opportunity to share “our Israel” through personal stories, rituals, reflections, Shabbat, and Havdalah, while standing not only as rabbis but also as mothers.” —Rabbi Sam Trief, Rabbi Loren Filson Lapidus, and Rabbi Rachael Klein Miller.

A Full-Circle Moment

From welcoming Shabbat at the Kotel to volunteering, meeting Israeli mothers, visiting communities near Gaza, and standing together at Hostage Square, Davis moms witnessed heartbreak and hope, and brought Davis L.O.V.E. (Living Our Values Every Day) with them: Kehillah, Kavod, Ruach, Chochmah, Tzedek. They returned to Atlanta more connected to Israel, to one another, and to the sacred and shared responsibility of raising the next generation of proud Jewish leaders.

Robbi Scheur ’04 and Rachel Wolf ’04 first traveled to Israel together as classmates on their Davis Academy 8th-grade trip. Years later, they returned once again, this time as Davis mothers.

“As Davis looks ahead to the continued growth of its kehillah, creating meaningful opportunities for parents to connect with one another, with Israel, and with the school’s mission is not peripheral. It is essential.” - Amy Shafron, Head of School

Davis moms volunteered at Save-AChild’s Heart, visiting with children who are brought to Israel from around the world for life-saving cardiac care. Save-A-Child’s Heart is also the organization that Davis Academy students supported this year through its school-wide tzedakah drive.

“We heard firsthand how challenging the past few years have been for the Israeli people and will hold them in our hearts back in Atlanta.” —Leah Davis

“One response stayed with me more than any other. A mother of two sons in the army telling us to lean into our own communities to support one another.” –Amy Robinson

“Being at the Kotel on Shabbat was so meaningful. Being completely alone, just us, and having a beautiful service together brought even more connection to this special group.” —Meredith Lefkoff

Walking the streets of Jerusalem, the Davis Academy delegation ran into a “familiar face” - perhaps a “cousin” of the Davis Lion mascot!

The group enjoyed exploring the various aspects of Israeli culture, including tasting local specialties during a food tour in Tel Aviv.

Davis Academy moms enjoyed a private meeting with the First Lady of Israel, Michal Herzog, at the President’s residence.

Around Campus Engineering Skills Start in Mechina and Kindergarten

Engineering skills start early at The Davis Academy! Mechina and Kindergarten students launched their engineering unit by exploring simple machines, beginning with levers. Putting their curiosity and creativity into action, students built their own catapults and tested them by launching cotton balls at towers made from recycled paper towel tubes. Through hands-on experimentation, our youngest learners discovered how simple machines work, turning theory into playful problem-solving and developing early engineering and design-thinking skills.

Science Erupts with Elephant Toothpaste Fun Sixth graders brought science to life with the exciting “Elephant Toothpaste” experiment! As foam rapidly burst from the container in a dramatic gas release, students compared the reaction to the explosive eruptions of cinder cone volcanoes. Just like magma shooting from a volcano, the fast, powerful chemical reaction created an unforgettable demonstration of how pressure and gas can build up and be released. This hands-on experiment helped students connect chemistry and earth science in a memorable way, proving that learning can be just as thrilling as a volcanic eruption!

Creating Weather Conditions in the Classroom As part of their weather unit, first graders transformed their classroom into a mini weather lab during a special visit from High Touch High Tech. Students rotated through hands-on stations where they explored real meteorological instruments and created their own weather-forming clouds, making rain, and even generating mini tornadoes. The excitement continued when meteorologist Lexie Horvath from Live 5 News in Charleston, South Carolina visited Davis to share what it’s like to track severe weather and use forecasting tools. Students even stepped into the role of meteorologists themselves, reporting the weather at the board, proving that science can be as thrilling as the storms they study.

500 Student Notes from Davis to Jerusalem Shinshin Itai organized a meaningful activity with Jewish Studies classes in both the Lower School and the Middle School. He taught students about Jerusalem and the significance of the Kotel, the Western Wall, and invited them to reflect by writing personal notes and prayers. These handwritten messages from The Davis Academy students traveled with Itai all the way to Israel, where he placed them in the Kotel. This powerful experience serves as a living reminder of one of our most cherished teachings at The Davis Academy: Kol Yisrael Arevin Zeh L’Zeh—all of Israel is interconnected and responsible for one another. The experience was beautifully documented in a video Itai created. Follow the QR code to join Itai in his adventure to Israel.

A Big Release for Third Grade Trout After months of care and observation, Davis third graders celebrated a special milestone: releasing their trout into the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. As part of their Trout in the Classroom project, students raised the fish from tiny eggs, learning about life cycles, aquatic ecosystems, and the importance of clean water. Release day was filled with excitement as students gently placed their trout into the river, watching them swim into their natural habitat. This hands-on experience helped bring science and environmental stewardship to life, showing students how their learning can connect directly to protecting the natural world.

Exploring Faith Across Atlanta Seventh graders took learning beyond the classroom on their annual Holy Sites Tour, exploring the rich religious diversity of Atlanta. Students visited the peaceful Ignatius House Jesuit Retreat Center, admired the stunning architecture of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, and experienced the serenity of the Dharma Jewel Monastery. Through these visits, students gained firsthand insight into different faith traditions and the vibrant spiritual landscape of our city. Experiences like this transform Atlanta into an extension of the classroom—helping students connect history, culture, and community while developing a deeper appreciation for the diverse world around them.

The Davis Academy Production of

As the curtain rose on the Rosenberg Performing Arts Theatre stage, a swamp appeared, a donkey burst into song, and a parade of fairytale creatures took their places. In that magical moment, Shrek The Musical Jr. came to life, launching the audience into an entertaining and heartwarming adventure.

U

nder the visionary direction of Ms. Kendrick Phillips, Director of Visual and Performing Arts, this year’s all-school musical brought together more than 150 students from Mechina: Kindergarten Prep through 8th grade as cast and crew, transforming the stage into a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and community.

The audience was transported far, far away into the world of Shrek, where ogres, donkeys, dragons, and a cheerful cast of fairy tale characters reminded us that being different is something to celebrate. With witty humor, wonderful musical numbers, and a powerful message about friendship, courage, and self-acceptance, the story follows Shrek’s unexpected quest to rescue Princess Fiona and reclaim his beloved swamp. What began as a reluctant adventure quickly blossomed into a tale about belonging and discovering that true beauty shines from within. Across three sold-out performances, more than 2,500 audience members laughed and cheered as the story unfolded. From the first musical number to the final bow, the production delighted everyone and showcased the incredible talent and ruach of our Davis students.

16 > The Davis Academy | davisacademy.org

The magic extended far beyond the spotlight. Creative set pieces transformed the theatre into Shrek’s beloved swamp, a dragon’s lair, and Lord Farquaad’s perfectly polished kingdom, while costumes, theatrical makeup, and multiple choreographies brought the whimsical fairytale world to life. Behind the scenes, student crew members managed lighting, sound, and stage transitions with precision. This extraordinary production was made possible through the dedication of the entire Davis kehillah, with hundreds of hours generously given by parents, alumni parents, and alumni mentors who helped build sets, organize costumes, support rehearsals, and bring every detail of this unforgettable production to life. Like Shrek’s unlikely band of fairytale friends, Davis students learn that every voice matters and every story deserves to be told. Through the performing arts, they gain the confidence to express themselves, take creative risks, and connect with one another in meaningful ways, reminding us that the magic of theatre lies not only in the stories on stage, but in the transformation it inspires within each student.

“The all-school musical is one of the most special traditions at Davis. It’s where students discover confidence, creativity, and the joy of telling a story together. Every child finds a place to shine.” —Ms. Kendrick Phillips

Low-key, Let’s Disagree

Jagger Kaye, Class of 2023

Low-key, Let’s Disagree is a Gen Z–focused podcast dedicated to fostering thoughtful, respectful dialogue around today’s most pressing political and social issues. Through long-form conversations with diverse voices— including activists, scholars, and peers with differing perspectives—the platform creates space for nuance, intellectual curiosity, and meaningful disagreement. In a time when conversations are often reactive and

polarized, the podcast models a different approach— one rooted in listening, learning, and engaging across differences. With the support of this grant, Jagger will enhance the podcast’s production quality through upgraded recording equipment and editing tools, expand outreach to feature expert and high-profile guests, and grow its audience through strategic marketing. She also plans to host live discussions and develop educational resources for schools and youth groups. By scaling the platform, Jagger aims to transform Low-key, Let’s Disagree into a broader initiative that empowers young people to engage thoughtfully, listen deeply, and lead with respect in an increasingly complex world. In true Davis spirit, Jagger transforms dialogue into a bridge, bringing curiosity, empathy, and courage to the forefront, and showing that when we lead with understanding, even disagreement can become a force for connection and change.

“I created Low-key, Let’s Disagree because I believe disagreement doesn’t have to mean division. In a world where conversations can quickly become reactive or hostile, I wanted to build a space where people—especially young people—can engage with complexity, challenge ideas respectfully, and learn from one another. If our generation can learn to approach differences with both conviction and empathy, we can shape a stronger, more thoughtful civic culture.”

From shared classrooms to shared lives, some Davis stories come full circle in the most beautiful ways. In this Alumni Spotlight, we celebrate Rachel York ’15 and Kavan Husney ’15, as well as Julia Tresh ’14 and Ben Stinar ’12, whose journeys began at Davis and, years later, came beautifully full circle. “

Kavan and I met in Kindergarten at Davis, a simple beginning that would quietly become the start of something much bigger. I don’t remember many of those earliest moments, and at the time, we weren’t especially close. Still, we shared many of the same friends and were always part of the same community. Looking back, it feels like our story was unfolding in the background all along, long before either of us realized it.

Alumni Journeys

After graduating from Davis in 2015, we both went on to attend Riverwood High School, where we truly reconnected. At one point, we even lived down the street from each other and carpooled every day, which made our friendship grow naturally and easily. What began as a simple reconnection soon became something more, and in the summer of 2017, just before our junior year, we began dating. It’s hard to believe that was nine years ago. After high school, our paths took us in different directions. I went to Ole Miss, where I earned a degree in Psychology. Today, I’m working full-time in healthcare while pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing at South College. Kavan attended the University of Georgia, where he earned his MBA in Business Analytics, and he now works as a GPS Analyst at Deloitte Consulting. Looking back, it’s clear that Davis has always been a part of our story. Without those early years, our paths might never have crossed in the same way. One of our favorite shared memories is our eighth grade trip to Israel, which was incredibly meaningful for both of us. That experience, along with so many others, helped shape the values we still carry with us today. The idea of “love your neighbor as yourself” has stayed with us and continues to guide how we live. In my work in healthcare, I strive to bring that to life by treating every patient with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Kavan proposed in our apartment, the very first place we shared together, already filled with so many memories. A few months earlier, we had gotten a puppy, and in the sweetest surprise, he tied the ring to her collar before proposing. I was completely caught off guard in the best possible way. Afterward, he led me to one of our favorite outdoor restaurants, where all of our family and friends were waiting to celebrate with us. Seeing everyone there, all at once, was the most special and emotional moment of the day. We’re getting married on March 27, 2027, which, amazingly, is the same date as my Bat Mitzvah. It’s a coincidence that makes the day feel even more meaningful, bringing our story full circle in a way we never could have planned. There’s something really special about growing up in the same place, surrounded by shared experiences, familiar faces, and a strong sense of community. It has given us a deeper connection, one rooted in understanding where we came from and how we have grown over time. I honestly can’t remember a time when Kavan wasn’t somehow a part of my life, even if it wasn’t always obvious. That history makes what we have feel even more special.

”

Now, as we look ahead to this next chapter, I feel so grateful. We’re excited to continue building a life together here in Atlanta, close to our families, and to keep growing side by side. It’s pretty amazing to think that it all started at Davis.

Ben graduated from Davis in 2012, and I graduated in 2014. Even though we were in different grades, we both look back on the Davis Israel trip as one of our favorite memories. Those experiences and the sense of community we shared at Davis became such an important foundation for both of us. After Davis, we both attended The Weber School before heading to opposite sides of the country for college. Ben went to Indiana University, and I attended the University of Arizona. When the pandemic brought us both back to Atlanta, we found ourselves spending more and more time together. What started as a friendship quickly grew into something much deeper. Over the past six years, we have built a beautiful relationship, fallen in love, and, most recently, moved to Miami, where we now live together. We absolutely love the energy and vibrancy of the city. I work as a stylist, and Ben works in sports journalism.

Ben proposed in one of our favorite places, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and it could not have been more perfect. We spent the day hiking through the mountains, exploring art galleries, and enjoying an amazing dinner together. While we were at dinner, Ben secretly arranged for our hotel room to be transformed with a glowing fireplace, candles, rose petals, and s’mores waiting for us. After dinner, he surprised me there, just the two of us, and it was one of the most thoughtful and special moments of my life. We are so excited to get married on December 12 in Florida. Throughout our relationship, it has been incredibly meaningful to reflect on our shared history and all the memories we each carry from Davis. We often talk about our teachers, experiences, and mutual friends, and it feels so special to have those connections woven into our story. While we were still living in Atlanta, we even had the chance to visit Davis together, which brought back so many memories and reminded us how much this community shaped who we are. Even though Ben and I did not begin our relationship until years later, Davis gave us shared values, lifelong connections, and a foundation that helped lead us back to each other.”

“Ben and I crossed paths so many times throughout our lives, long before we ever imagined we would end up together. Our story really began at Davis, where our families and friendships were already connected in so many ways. We later attended The Weber School together, carpooled with each other’s friends, and became close with each other’s siblings. Ironically, when I transferred to Davis in the middle of third grade, my Hebrew class for the rest of the year consisted of just me, my brother, and Ben’s sister. Even with all of those connections, Ben and I never actually spoke until 2019, when we both ended up at an Atlanta Hawks game with two other Davis alumni. We instantly bonded over our shared love of basketball, and from that moment on, something just clicked.
