T

he 2022 Monster Energy AMA Supercross season came to an end at the final round in beautiful Salt Lake City, Utah, On Sat. May 7th.

The season was wrapped up at Rice Eccles Stadium just east of downtown.

I suppose that I might have stepped out of bounds a bit by going way over budget for my hotel room in SLC, staying at the upscale Little America, downtown.

But what the heck, I decided to treat myself and it was only a minute or two from the stadium.

I had left Albuquerque on Thurs. afternoon. It was now Friday before the race, “Media Day”. I had planned on stopping

somewhere in the mountains and crashing in the car for a few hours before finishing my drive into town, but it didn’t happen. I had literally driven all night in our new Tesla Y Model and made it to SLC very early on Friday morning. I got spoiled with the assistance of the self driving feature and before I knew it, I was in Provo just south of Salt Lake. So I drove on in to SLC at about 2am.

I caught some shut eye while supercharging at the Tesla dealer then went to the hotel to hit the buffet, eat some breakfast, and drink some much needed coffee. I then went to

the front desk to beg for an extremely early check in. I pleaded my case with the “all night drive” story and got lucky.

The sweet gal checked me in my room at 9am. So I headed up for a shower before going to the stadium to acquire my credentials.

Things at the track were looking good but super dry. I looked at the schedule and the Pro’s were almost up. I found my way down to the staging area just about the time, Jason “El Hombre” Anderson and his mechanic, Jason Montoya, had rolled out by the starting gate.

recognized me. I said hello and congrats, gave him a fist bump, then quickly asked if I could chat with him back in the pits for an interview after qualifying. He agreed. Little did I know at that moment, but It was the beginning of an incredibly awesome weekend of racing with the Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory Racing Team!

After shooting Jason and some of the other pro’s in qualifying, I made my way to Jason’s pit to meet the rest of the Factory Kawasaki Team. As always the Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory pit area was stellar, everything was spotless and shiny. Jason’s factory works 450 number “21” was the star of the pit. Everyone was very cool and happy since Jason had just produced the fastest numbers on the track in round one of 450 qualifying aboard the green beast. Jason introduced me to his team and Eddie Ayala, Monster Energy Factory Kawasaki Racing’s PR Rep. for the team.

Eddie and I hit it off and he agreed that Jason should interview with me. Eddie also welcomed me to hang with the team for an inside look at Monster 6 NMMotorSportsReport.com

Energy AMA Pro Supercross for the weekend. I also made friends with AMA Pro, Broc Tickle, Kawasaki Factory Test Rider. Then met Jasons Dad, Michael, and his Uncle and Grand Father. I then met Tom of the“Team Fried” YouTube channel, and was “off to the races”!

I had a fantastic interview with Jason, who had just won the last 3 Supercross rounds and also dominated at SLC this

weekend in the final round. Jason qualified fastest in both sessions then won his heat and the main event. The stadium was packed and the crowed went nuts for Jason all night! It was an epic weekend and produced this feature as well as the live interview of Jason and I on The New Mexico Motorsports Report the morning of race day.

Sometimes thing just fall into place.

This weekend was no exception. It was an awesome weekend with Team Green! We have a big time AMA Pro Supercross/Motocross star right here in the Land of Enchantment.

Jason Anderson is a motocross superhero and New Mexico is his home!

I

n late-1969, Clay Burkhart took delivery of a 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 at his dealership in Hobbs, NM. The car was built on the assembly line with the express intent of being a NHRA Stock Eliminator race car. Throughout 1970, while it stayed in his dealer inventory, Burkhart raced it at drag strips throughout NM and TX with considerable success.

At the end of the 1970 racing season, Burkhart put the car up for sale so that he could race a current model car in 1971. In December 1970, Paul Greenberg bought the car as a “Dealer Demo” car and became the first titled owner. That was the beginning of the legend of the “Screaming Orange Olds” that eventually became an heirloom for the Greenberg family.

Paul raced the car from 1971 through 1974 as both a class legal Stocker and as a Super Stocker, winning quite a few races throughout the Southwest U.S. He also ran at NHRA National and Divisional races at tracks in California, Arizona, Texas, Colorado, Kansas and Louisiana. In 1975, Paul turned the driving over to his then 15-year-old son Lyle. In his first outing in the car, Lyle won the “King of Albuquerque” title from the Police Athletic League as the fastest high school student in the city. Throughout 1975 and into 1976, Lyle and his dad campaigned the car throughout the Southwest, winning several events and setting two national records. But Paul and 8 NMMotorSportsReport.com

Lyle wanted to move up to Competition Eliminator, so the car was sold in mid-1976 to good friend Dean Triplett who lived in Gallup, NM. After a couple of years, Triplett sold it back to Paul in 1978. By this time Lyle was off driving a Competition Eliminator altered for Andy Johnson, so Paul raced the car with Mark Rowden driving. Rowden soon bought the car and raced it for another year or so before blowing an engine and transmission.

In 1983, Lyle finally convinced Rowden to sell the broken Oldsmobile to him. That got the car back into the family’s possession, but the car needed a lot of work. Anybody that knows Lyle understands that he is consumed by the racing bug. As a result, the Olds sat untouched in his garage for 36 years until late-2019, while Lyle pursued an endless stream of successful race car projects. One of Lyle’s many life blessings is having Sean Guthrie of Car Crafters as his sonin-law. In November of 2019, Sean had grown tired of hearing Lyle say that “some day” he would get the Olds running. So Sean made the decision that it was finally time to start the restoration of the Screaming Orange Olds. Sean and his staff at Car Crafters have lots of experience restoring classic muscle cars, so the project began.

Initially, the plan was to do a cosmetic restoration, along with a fresh engine and transmission. But as the COVID pandemic hit in early 2020, the plan grew to include a full frame off restoration back to a condition of “as raced in 1971-1976”. Lyle knew that he had the correct cylinder heads and manifold for the W-30 package and then stumbled on an old shortblock in his parent’s garage that had been blown up in 1972. He was able to salvage enough of that engine to be able to say that the engine is one that was actually raced in the car in 1972.

Troy Hamby at Alchemy Engines assembled the 455 cubic inch engine and Paul Roybal at Precision Transmissions built the Turbo 400 transmission. One of the crowning details of the car was getting the original W-27 aluminum center section rear end back in the car. When Paul first bought the car in 1970, he felt that the aluminum rear end would not be durable. He was receiving some Oldsmobile factory support, so was able to get a complete iron center section rear end from them. He took the W-27 rear end and stashed it away.

Both times he sold the car he kept that rear end. By 2020, it was obvious that Paul was correct, the aluminum rear ends were NOT durable and most have been blown up, making the one he had exceedingly rare and valuable. The rear end was in great mechanical shape and just needed a cosmetic restoration after sitting in a shed for 50 years.

As the restoration progressed Sean and Lyle learned more and more about the car. It is a “Post” W-30 Sport Coupe which meant that there were only 262 made in 1970. It originally was a 4-speed transmission, which when combined with the W-27 rear end (which there was reputedly only 100 scattered across the nearly 3,000 total W-30 cars of all body styles) and the ultra-rare B85 body molding means that the car could easily be one of only a handful ever built with those features.

Recently, Mario at Gotcha Covered upholstery did a complete interior restoration to make the car just about show ready. Lyle and Sean want to acknowledge the guidance they received from noted Oldsmobile W-30 expert Fred Mandrick. Fred patiently answered an endless series of questions as Sean and Lyle tried to get every detail as close as possible.

Lyle’s whole family, including grandchildren, participated in the restoration and everyone agrees the car is a family heirloom to be passed down through the generations!

IndyCar stars

Colton Herta, Pato O’Ward eyeing F1 careers;

can it happen?

Colton Herta and Patricio O’Ward have a lot in common.

Both are young stars in the NTT IndyCar Series, born 10 months apart. They moved up the American open-wheel ladder together, driving for Andretti Autosport in Indy Lights, and dominated in it. Of the 17 races during the 2018 season, they combined to win 13 of them.

In January, they were teamed up and won the LMP2 class with DragonSpeed Racing at the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

And now, three months into the IndyCar season, both are race winners with career changes on their radar.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown has expressed interest in both drivers getting seat time in Formula 1 cars.

O’Ward tested a McLaren F1 car in Abu Dhabi at the end of the 2021 season.

Brown promised O’Ward, who is one of his IndyCar drivers for Arrow McLaren SP, a test if he won a race in 2021.

O’Ward won his first IndyCar race at Texas Motor Speedway and followed it up with another victory at The Raceway at Belle Isle six weeks later.

Brown has referred to O’Ward as a “young Montoya” but has reiterated that he wants the Mexican to be focused on IndyCar. He’s 23, and he has plenty of his racing career ahead, so he shouldn’t worry about getting into F1 immediately.

Herta, the son of former Indy racer Bryan and phenom for Andretti, seems to be the U.S.’ best hope for an American F1 driver right now. With American interest in F1 rising as a result of the popular Netflix docuseries “Drive 12 NMMotorSportsReport.com

to Survive,” fans have been vocal about the desire for an American on the grid. Alexander Rossi was the last American to compete in a Grand Prix -- he made five starts with the now-defunct Manor Marussia F1 Team in 2015. But his tenure was less than stellar and largely unnoticed, with a best finish of 12th.

The Herta family is primarily known for its history in Indy car racing, but there is some familiarity with F1, too.

Bryan Herta tested a Minardi F1 car in England in 2002. Twenty years later, Colton will do similarly as he will get the opportunity to drive McLaren’s 2021 MCL35M car. It finished fourth in the Constructor’s Championship last year.

Patricio O’Ward

Herta’s name has been mentioned not only with McLaren but with Andretti, too. Michael Andretti has been pushing to start an F1 team for nearly a year, and obviously, Herta would be a perfect fit with the team if it were to come to fruition.

Andretti and Herta were both present at the Miami Grand Prix in May. Andretti spoke to all 10 team principals throughout the weekend to get their blessing of starting an 11th team for the grid. He collected signatures from team bosses who supported his venture during the four-day event.

O’Ward is still signed to a multiyear deal with AMSP, so it will take a little longer for him to make the jump across the Atlantic if he ever gets the chance to be an F1 driver.

And McLaren already has two quality drivers in its F1 cars named Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo.

Norris is signed through 2025, so there is already one seat that will be occupied for a few more years. Ricciardo, on the other hand, is looking to find his footing again in F1. He experienced success with Red Bull early in his career but left for Renault (now Alpine) with hopes of having a long-term relationship with the French squad and winning his first world championship.

Several weeks ago, Herta made comments that ruffled the feathers of fans and followers of the sport, but it wasn’t intended to be hurtful.

Daniel Riccario Ricciardo in his time there. He was a Renault driver for two years and scored only two podiums with a best points finish of fifth in 2020.

When Carlos Sainz Jr. departed McLaren for Ferrari, Ricciardo replaced him, and it seemed like the perfect place for him to rejuvenate his career.

It hasn’t happened, though. Yes, Ricciardo won the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, but he ended up eighth in the standings, and the victory is his only podium to date with the British team.

“If (Ricciardo) continues to build, I probably won’t have that [F1] opportunity, but hopefully Lando kicks his ass a bit more, so I can at least have a shot,” he said.

Herta doesn’t wish ill on Ricciardo, although it is understandable to think that after this remark. Norris has outperformed the Australian consistently, and if there were to be a McLaren seat that becomes available in the near future, it’d clearly be the one occupied by Ricciardo.

Ricciardo is signed through at least 2023 and has an option beyond that.

So Herta and O’Ward could be in play for the seat in 2024. However, if Andretti can start its own team, then this situation becomes a moot point.

Will Andretti be able to start an F1 team? It won’t happen overnight, but these are questions will be answered in the years to come.

Reyes Romero, 2021 Sportsman Champion 2021 was Definity Reyes Romero’s year in the Sportsman’s Division at Albuquerque Dragway. Randy Combs, 60, of Rio Rancho passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, November 17, 2021. He was born to Loren and Joyce Combs on Friday, December 9, 1960, in Grand Island, NE. Randy was a skilled mechanic and successful automotive repair shop owner in Albuquerque, NM for many years. He was an avid stock car racing fan and raced at local and nearby racetracks since he was a teenager.

He won many championships and was well known in the racing community.

The idea of a memorial race was presented by Patty Cain to Charlie Fegan, a date was selected, and the planning begun.

Family and friends helped bring together a great event. “My Dad was always into my racing. I always wanted to do it because he did it all the time. Hopefully tonight, we can have a lot of cars and a tribute to him,” said RC Combs (Randy’s son) before the race.

“This is the best race of the season, even though he is not here. I have drivers coming from all over the state to honor him (Randy). Just to be here for him is extremely special,” said Patty in the race trailer before the race. “Randy was the most giving, caring, special man on two feet. He was a good Dad, was an excellent race car driver and he took in my kids when he didn’t even have t. He raised them. He was A, #1.”

The Randy Combs Memorial Race was held on Saturday May 21, 2022, with many drivers in attendance including a few that came out just for Randy. Divisions for the evening included the 305 Winged Sprint Cars, Mini-Sprints, Modifieds, Cruisers / Hornets and the headlining Stock Cars. All the race cars had a Randy Combs Memorial Flag attached.

It only seemed appropriate that RC Combs would win the feature race of the evening. The win was not guaranteed

and hard fought, but RC brought it home. Trevor Combs finished 2nd and Rick Combs 10th. 13 Stock Cars started the race.

Josh Cain won the Modified (7) race, Lasiter the 305 Winged Sprints (6), Hill the Non-Wing Mini-Sprints (11) and Rick Boelter the Cruisers division (17). The racing was good, but the weather was very cold. Thank you to all the fans that came out and stayed – BRRRRR. $555 was added to the purse and all the drivers appreciated the help. Whitney Combs put together a surprise during intermission for the kids in the grandstands.

“You should be here” by Cole Swindle got the cars fired up for the Mains. Each division did a pre-race salute to the fans in honor of Randy. A memory box was available in the pits and drivers, fans, family and friends were invited to leave a note.

The Memorial concluded with the family gathering in Victory Lane for a Celebration!

July is Curbstoning Month, A Public Service Announcement from the NMIADA “APD does not have the time to prioritize curbstoning (illegal car sales), I am telling you straight up. My department is willing to support a curbstoning crackdown by code enforcement, but the New Mexico Independent Automobile Dealers Association (NMIADA) will need to work with the Code Enforcement Director to get this done,” said Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller at a NMIADA breakfast in 2021.

“Curbstoning is costly in lost revenue for the State of New Mexico, but rest assured that they will get their money. The funds come from an unsuspecting single mother or hardworking individual in our community that pays their taxes and uses their vehicle to get back and forth to work,” states Marc Powell, Executive Dirrector for the NMIADA. Powell continues, “Individuals that are pray to sellers of illegal cars on corners throughout the state. These sellers pass on the registration fees to the unexpected buyers. One of many risks and ultimate costs the buyer takes just trying to get by.”

What is curbstoning?

Curbstoning is when a dealer poses as a private seller to sell a car. By curbstoning, a dealer can avoid having to comply with the same regulation dealers are upheld to.

To a buyer this could mean buying a car that has a salvaged title. It could also mean unknowingly buying a car that has been in a flood and suffered severe water damage.

The term curbstoning comes from the manner in which transactions like this typically occur. When a dealer is trying to pose as an individual they will often sell cars from the curb, a parking lot or other similar places, just as a private seller would. A curbstoner often gets away with scamming

buyers because they sell the vehicle and disappear. With no office or contact information, a buyer can end up with a lot of headaches to deal with.

“It is important to understand that the NMIADA understands that many private party sales happen everyday with good outcomes between the parties. A private party or individual can sell up to 4 vehicles per year without a dealer’s license,” says Marc Powell.

How can I protect myself from curbstoning?

Tip #1 – Avoid buying cars off the side of the road. Be cautious of cars that are for sale and sitting on the road with “For Sale” signs on them. Abandon parking lots or even shopping mall parking lots are also places that curbstoners tend to do business.

Tip #2 – Be cautious of the classified ads.

While you can get good used vehicles from traditional classified ads, know that this is also a place that curbstoners may advertise their cars for sale. When reviewing classified ads take note of the phone number listed in the ad you are looking at. Then look at some of the other ads on the page. If you find several other ads with the same number, it could be a sign of curbstoning.

Tip#3 – Ask to see the title. Before you buy any used vehicle you should ask to see the title. Looking at the title should tell you whether or not the car has been salvaged or if it has been the victim of water damage.

Tip#4 – Match the driver’s name on their

license to the name on the title. As you are looking at the title, check to make sure the seller’s name matches with the name on the title. Ask to see their driver’s license to compare. If the names do not match, you should be asking why.

Tip#5 – Get the car inspected before you buy it. Lastly, many curbstoners will try to rush the sale and not allow you to get the car inspected before you buy it. Before you exchange any money, be sure to have the car inspected by your own trusted mechanic.

If you believe you bought a vehicle from a dealer posing as a private seller, you may have been the victim of curbstoning. In this situation, you may have a civil case against the dealer and may be able to get your money back. Consult with an attorney to learn the facts about auto sales and curbstoning so you can report the incident, protect future buyers and get justice for yourself.

n Sunday May 22nd Rio Rancho and Albuquerque participated in a recordbreaking Men’s Health benefit event.

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride 2022 was another record-breaking year for New Mexico Gentlefolk! This global simultaneous ride is a themed motorcycle event where riders raise funds for the Movember Foundation by dressing dapper and riding in style from location to location. A record 182 riders participated this year raising 13,383.00 for the cause locally!

The ride started at Café Bella Coffee in Rio Rancho for AM rider check in, conversation and photos, then organized into three groups they made their way in parade fashion to Rust is Gold Coffee in Albuquerque for a mid-way Moto MeetUp. After conversation and a break, the entire group once again hit the road in fashion and headed to the historic Albuquerque Press Club for a grand celebration, hosted lunch, awards presentation, and reception activities.

Second, a wonderful environment to come and learn about your machine (RZR) and what the machine’s capabilities are as well as their limitations.

The main goal of RZRVille is to get people together, teach and share safety information and hopefully, become lifelong friends. Someone that comes once, often the next time they come with family and friends, they have a good time, and it just grows from that.

That is the passion Frank displays daily, trying to raise the bar of the whole offroad community. It’s a good group of people, there is always some negative people. My goal is to try to eliminate as much of that and try and show what good people can do. We’ve done fundraisers, including a Veteran’s ride. We’re going to do a First Responders event soon.

they shouldn’t cut the fence down and ride on private property. They don’t know that they shouldn’t drink and drive. It’s an educational process in a passive environment. You don’t want to find out from the Game & Fish with a ticket.

We’re currently gathering supplies and stuff for the fire victims up in Northern New Mexico. Just trying to show the community that it’s a good group of people and they could enjoy the sport as a wonderful sport.

RZRVille is a four acre launch property and homebase for off-road rides. Next to it, is additional property owned by other off-road groups and supporters, is additional land and they are working to get more. Adjacent private property owners, and BLM land allow us to ride there because we help maintain the areas, we help with cleanup days and the trash collection bags that Outlaw Desert Racing provided for the users.

Off-roading can be a dangerous sport.

I’ve seen many people hurt. I’ve seen people killed. They show up and get overwhelmed with sand rails, 2,000 horsepower machines, and new high horsepower RZRs. Basically, raising the bar and having a comfortable place for people to come and enjoy it and gain experience.

The biggest mistake new riders make is not carrying any tools or any supplies.

I have found people out in the desert that have spent three days out there with a didn’t even have water. I have a stage-one med kit in my machine. First, they are entering a hostile environment, especially here in the summer when we can have 115-degree days. Wearing seat belts, keep your hands inside the machine. There’s nothing worse on a Sunday afternoon than coming back with a broken arm or something worse.

We’re blessed with a variety of different things out here. We’ve got a huge meteorite that came down years ago, out for sightseeing. We’ve got these rocks and formations. Valleys that are big boxes. We’ve got all kinds of artifacts out there. The bulk of the top of the Southern is a coral reef. That was originally underwater, we found a bunch of seashells out there.

The first mistake people make when they buy these things is trying to do donuts. They’ve seen YouTube videos and try and do a donut in one of these things. When you get on the gas to do a donut, you learn about centrifugal force because the car flips over. So, if I can prevent one person from getting hurt and flipping over, I accomplished my goal.

world of outlaws Bristol Bash

The Greatest Show on Dirt recently took to the high banks of Bristol Motor Speedway for the second annual World of Outlaws Bristol Bash. Although the ‘Last Great Colosseum’ is best known for some of NASCAR’s greatest battles, the speedway has welcomed the dirt community with open arms in recent years. As fans entered the facility, the atmosphere was as electric as it gets as the NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars and the CASE Construction Late Models were able to jam the world’s largest names in dirt track racing into one place for a full weekend of high-speed racing action.

The stars and cars of the NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars were an astounding experience live as their speeds neared 150 miles per hour at the end of each straightaway before burying the car into the embankment of the turn. Paired with the pure twisted horsepower of the CASE Construction Late Models, and you can easily understand why this event has quickly become a must-see.

The festivities kicked off on Thursday evening with a handful of practice sessions which offered teams an opportunity to tweak on their cars at speed with the understanding that the Bristol Motor Speedway dirt surface might be slightly different than the inaugural running in 2021. In a rare case for the series, this is one of the few tracks that changes from dirt to tarmac throughout the year.

With a day of practice, a handful of heat races, and a dash under their wing, it was finally time to drop the first official green flag for main event action on Friday night. First up we would see the CASE Construction Late Models hit the racing surface with Kyle Hammer bringing the field to green. In a bizarre series of events, fan favorite Kyle Larson was forced to start at the rear of the field after not hearing the 8-minute horn and arriving to staging late.

For fans, this quickly turned into a treat as nearly every set of eyes at Bristol fell on the driver of the Elk Grove, CA driver as he charged his way through the field on the topside of the speedway.

Meanwhile, up front, “Superman” Jonathan Davenport was busy living up to his nickname as he passed Ricky Weiss with just four laps to go. That would fall right in the clutches of Larson who took second away from Weiss and then set his eyes on Davenport. With one lap to go and one last chance at victory, Larson threw a bomb at Davenport in turn one. The bomb would have been better received as grenade however, as Larson’s right

rear overstepped the cushion and hammered the concrete wall, cutting down his tire and ending his bid for the win. Davenport would capture the win, with Weiss and Kyle Bronson rounding out the podium.

“It would have been a lot easier if I didn’t have to come from the tail,” said a visibly upset Larson after the race regarding starting from the rear of the field. “I’m the only guy doing double duty here so there’s a lot of s**t I’ve got to get done to get my stuff ready.”

Next, it was time for the NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars to circuit the speedway for 25 laps. In a powerful move of redemption from one year ago, Logan Schuchart proved that he would be the car to beat Friday evening. The Hanover, PA racer was able to make a clean sweep of the night winning the QuickTime award, heat race, dash, and running away from pole sitter Aaron Reutzel to win the main event by 1.369 seconds over Reutzel, Kraig Kinser, Carson Macedo, and David Gravel.

For the final night of the Bristol Bash, officials made the decision to swap the lineup around and allow the sprint cars to have the advantage of moisture by running in front of the late models on Saturday night. Two new gladiators would take center stage as well with leading Rookie of the Year candidate, Spencer Bayston, set to duel reigning NASCAR Cup Series Champion, Kyle Larson for the win and a $25,000 payday.

and the fearlessness from the drivers are just pieces to the puzzle of what makes the Bristol Bash a marquee event. There are some concerns for the future, however. Many drivers have legitimate concerns about the speed that comes with racing on a track like Bristol. With less and less drivers feeling the excitement of this event and continued concern about safety and quality racing product, the future of it could be in danger. For fans of Bristol and the dirt track racing, we can only hope that a happy-medium is found so that generations to come can enjoy the spectacle that is the World of Outlaws Bristol Bash.

It was the experience of a lifetime to see The Greatest Show on Dirt tackle one of the most historic racetracks in the United States in person.

Hot Rods for Hunger

ot Rods for Hunger was a car show and poker run sponsored by Bell’s Brewery and Premier Distributing and organized by Mopar Most Wanted. The event raised just short of $14,000 for the Storehouse New Mexico, one on New Mexico’s largest food pantries feeding thousands of residents every year. The proceeds will from this event enable the Storehouse to provide 50,000 meals.

Bell’s Brewery and Premier Distributing also matched dollar-for-dollar up to $5,200 for all online donations!

“For every $1 raised, the Storehouse can provide 5 meals to people in need,” states the Storehouse New Mexico’s media information, “the Storehouse feeds an average of 40,000 people a year in New Mexico. Every sponsorship dollar and all monies raised will make a difference.”

The host location was Albertsons at Eastdale Shopping Center, on the southeast corner of Candelaria and Eubank (2801 Eubank Blvd. NE). Eastdale was the turnaround point for cruising, back in the day. Cruisers would drive on Eubank between Sonic at Lomas and Eastdale, so it only seemed appropriate to choose that location.

Hotrods for Hunger drew close to 200 cars and included a Poker Run that several drivers chose to do both. There was a 50/50 raffle and tons of door prizes., including cash prizes! There were food trucks, entertainment and fun for the whole family Next year’s Hot Rods for Hunger is tentatively scheduled for Sunday May 21, 2023. Racing fuels and higher octane can make a good build even better. The ability to utilize higher compression or more boost can be more effective when using the right octane fuels. Octane is a chemical in petroleum that is used to rate different types of gas. In slang, we often use the term “high octane” to define something of very good quality.

Many different octane levels are offered in aftermarket fuels. We stock 14 different blends of Torco race fuels in both leaded and unleaded. We have the 94 Storage Fuel, 99 Oxygenated, 100 and 108 unleaded, and then 110, 112, 112 Oxygenated, 114, 116, 118, and 118 Oxygenated leaded fuels. All of these blends are non-ethanol fuels. We also carry Methanol and E85 Racing Ethanol and E98 (98% Ethanol) fuels as well; similar to E85 you see at the pumps, but much better. So, let’s see if we can make some sense of all of this.

The numbers we see on the pump at the gas station are octane ratings, that number is an average of two different octane measurements, RON and MON. The RON is the Research Octane Number rating. Simply put, RON determines a fuel’s ‘anti-knock’ qualities or resistance to pre-ignite; or if you want to put in another way, the octane number suggests its resistance to detonation. While MON (Motor Octane Number) is similar, it is tested at a higher engine RPM, therefore it tends to be a lower octane number, usually about 8-12 points lower than RON. Most of the race fuels tend to use MON when determining their octane ratings.

Our race fuels have octane ratings starting at 94 and go as high as 118 octane, most engine don’t need 118 octane fuel, but some of us use it in our race engine with high compression, lots of nitrous or under a lot of boost. Most everyone that has stepped up their game find themselves needing more than pump gas can offer. For example, I have a turbocharged Hemi that has two different boost settings, the lower tune works fine on pump gas with a posted 91 octane, the higher boost level requires more, closer to 94 or 96 octane fuel. And for those of us that land in the middle, we have Torco’s Accelerator, an unleaded fuel octane

concentrate. You can increase your octane level by as much as 14 points by adding 32 ounces of concentrate to 5 gallons of fuel or only increase it 4 points if you add the can to 20 gallons of pump gas. This stuff works on anything, street or race cars, motorcycles, boats, snowmobile, ATV and UTVs and it doesn’t care if it’s injected, turbocharged, supercharged or normally aspirated. Just pick your poison level and start brewing.

The 94 Storage Fuel is a newer fuel to us. We started carry it last year and have found it to be very popular for older muscle cars that sit more than they drive. It is specially formulated to last longer than most fuel, making it ideal for cars that are stored. It also good for small engine applications, such as mowers and other motorized equipment, this is because it is not real high in octane and it does not have ethanol, which can be harmful for small engines in particular. We started carrying it in one gallon containers for such uses.

Lastly, I would like to touch on is oxygenated fuels. I like to refer to oxygenated fuel as FREE horsepower. It takes oxygen to burn fuel; these fuels bring exactly that, oxygen.

When I first tested Oxygenated fuels, it needed more jet in my carburetor by 6-8%, meaning my fuel volume increased.

This means burning more fuel and making more horse power. Since the price of oxygenated fuels is the same, it is FREE horsepower. No reason to leave it on the table, might as well use it, did I mention it is FREE horsepower?
