A Lo-Fi mock-up was built by Allweld and set up in Geebung, Brisbane. Disability sector members, passengers, train drivers and bike users tested layout and boarding early, as part of a co-design process. A full-scale Hi-Fi mock-up followed in 2025, a 38 m replica with a driver's cab and two carriages, testing level boarding, door thresholds, priority seating and wheelchair spaces. I directed the design team, represented the firm at 12+ stakeholder workshops and used the test feedback to inform contract variations.

Horizontal Fluidity The Gangnam Parasite eVolo Skyscraper Competition 2010

Entry

No. 0267, 2010

Type

Competition, team of four

Site

Gangnam, Seoul

2 Site: the Gangnam-daero and Teheran-ro intersection

3 Strategy: stacked canopy, frame and park plate over the city; biomimicry of canopy, dragonfly wing and cladding; continuous load path

1 Problem: a dense metropolis with no land left for burial

Death is usually disassociated from life. Seoul is one of the most densely populated cities on the planet, with an ageing population and little land left to bury its dead. The response is to bring the cemetery into the city: a horizontal skyscraper that threads between existing towers, using promession to turn the deceased into biodegradable soil for a public park. 4 Result: the horizontal skyscraper above the Gangnam intersection

Structure Horizontal Fluidity 2/2 Structure and systems

5 Longitudinal section A-A 1:50: park decks, promession facility and biomass channel carried on a central steel core

The scheme is a longitudinal span carried on a central steel core, with park decks, a promession facility and a biomass conversion channel inside the structure. The canopy borrows from the dragonfly wing: layers of ETFE skin, membrane, planting and a diagrid frame. Elevator pods run on independent rails along the core. Promession returns soil to the park, and biomass conversion produces electricity.

Urban Fold renews Redfern Station with a folded, tessellated roof, a public concourse and a trafficable roof plaza above the platforms. The design follows one chain: Symbol, Surface, Fold, Structural Modules, Arrangement and Space. First Nations red arrows for the emu and its tracks, honouring the Eora Nation, were coded into a surface, folded as a paper module and made repeatable.

The module is repeatable: modified into staircase, tower and bridge elements, built off site and assembled on site as the concourse bridge, stair columns and passenger lift shafts. The folded roof canopy was developed through scoring and folding experiments. Together they form the public concourse, the trafficable roof and a lookout above the platforms.

Hargrave Street Third year professional practice Development application, Paddington

Unit

BDES3025 Architectural Professional Practice

Year

2011, Semester 2

Type

Individual project

Site

134 Hargrave Street, Paddington

Scope

Alterations and additions to a terrace house, for Woollahra Council

1 Terrace facade: cast-iron balcony detail

Location plan: 134 Hargrave Street, Paddington

For this unit, students prepared a development application for Woollahra Council. The brief meant reviewing the council's LEP and DCP, meeting strict heritage and environmental controls, and following the council's DA drawing standards. The house has moderate heritage significance but is heavily altered beyond its front facade. The proposal leaves the heritage facades untouched and removes structurally insignificant partition walls, opening the lower and ground levels to improve circulation and bring northern light into the interior. 2 Section A-A, Hargrave Street to rear lane (DC.03A)

Documentation Hargrave Street 2/2 Development application drawings

The proposal was documented to the council's DA drawing standards: elevations and floor plans for the lower ground, ground, first and roof levels. The heritage facades are left untouched. Partition walls that are not structural are removed, opening the lower and ground levels to improve circulation and bring northern light into the interior.
