We present to you The Impact of Your Philanthropy, the Davidson Day 2019–2020 Annual Report.

We are grateful to all of our families and our friends who chose to contribute to the enrichment of all of our Patriot students. The 2019–2020 year was certainly a memorable one, and your investment in our school community and our students is notable.

Our community is secure and supportive, a fact evident in every facet of the 2019–2020 Academic Year at Davidson Day. From the heartbreaking passing of Dr. Latta Baucom through the quick and successful transition of our entire school community to a virtual teaching and learning environment, our community—you!—came together to support each other and our students.

In our report, you will see the impact of your philanthropy through three stories that show how your gifts enhanced our academic curriculum, expanded our technology capabilities, accelerated the professional development of our faculty and staff, and enriched the special, distinctive programs that provide opportunities for all Patriots to benefit from an education that goes beyond boundaries. Your partnership through your participation in giving to the Enrichment Fund and through other philanthropic efforts made this possible.

Our mission is to foster academic excellence through collaboration, creativity, and character development. Even amidst unpredictable circumstances, we saw this mission fulfilled last year, as we collaborated with one another to solve problems creatively, while displaying the character and integrity for which Davidson Day is known. It’s clear to us that our community’s answer to the question “What’s your why for giving?” is every Davidson Day Patriot.

Impact Story:

Culturally-Responsive Literature Every day, Patriot students are challenged to articulate and share their ideas in many formats: writing, classroom discussions, presentations and speeches, dioramas, and experiments. This matters.

Our students—your children—are global citizens who will contribute to and lead in their communities and organizations at a time when cultural considerations are more important than ever.

That’s why, with support from the Enrichment Fund, Davidson Day invests in the professional development of our faculty.

Dr. Kerri Hunt, chair of the Davidson Day English Department, completed the master classes "Culturally Responsive Literature Instruction" and "Instructional Moves: Making Classroom Discussions More Inclusive and Effective" through the Harvard Graduate School of Education, just one example of how Davidson Day invests in our staff.

“These courses provided me with an opportunity to learn from a diverse group of educators working on choosing texts and approaches that reflect the diversity of our contemporary cultural landscape,” says Dr. Hunt.

“Engaging our Upper School students in critical conversations about literature and culture is central to my teaching practice. Being able to discuss, understand, and respond productively to cultural otherness is a crucial skill for students to practice as they prepare for college and beyond.”

Dr. Hunt implemented research-driven strategies for culturally responsive education to supplement her teaching of critical literacy in AP Literature, Composition, and Creative Writing.

She also expanded her repertoire of inclusive discussion strategies in the physical space of the classroom and in her virtual classes after Davidson Day safely transitioned to its virtual teaching and learning environment.

Our Patriots will graduate, they will enter the workforce as employees and leaders, and they will contribute to their communities. Their ability to understand cultural differences and collaborate with others from different backgrounds who have diverse experiences and skills will be critical to their success in college and beyond.

“I appreciate the opportunity to further my knowledge and hone my teaching, thanks to the contributions of our community to the Enrichment Fund,” says Dr. Hunt.

Transitioning to Virtual Learning

Even when our students aren't at school, they continue to learn.

That’s especially true for our early childhood students, who seek out real-world experiences and are naturally inclined to take an interest in participating and assisting in the world (of adults) around them.

Virtual learning can be particularly challenging for early childhood students and their families.

At Davidson Day, our classrooms and daily schedules and routines are built to allow free movement, to encourage creativity and collaboration, and to provide opportunities to work with and explore tangible, physical objects.

Students need this type of work available to them at home, as well.

Because of the investments our community made to the Enrichment Fund, our teachers were prepared to transition our students to a virtual environment, equipped with the resources necessary to continue instruction that provided a rich, robust, real-world experience for our young Patriot learners.

In one classroom’s baskets, for example, students and their families found items like potting soil, seeds, a container, and a small shovel, so that students could explore how plants grow.

Impact Story:

Pacing Innovation and Technology

Fueled by your investments in the Enrichment Fund, STEM Instructor Courtney Chambers is revolutionizing how students combine lessons from different disciplines to solve complex challenges.

By developing intellectually challenging projects that require Patriots to retrieve the academic knowledge they’ve previously acquired, then implement that knowledge in new and innovative ways, she’s deepening our students’ cross-curricular connections and building their foundation of futureready skills.

Take, for example, the incorporation of seven Sphero BOLT robots, purchased with money donated to the Enrichment Fund.

With flexible, app-enabled technology, these robots can accomplish a variety of challenges Ms. Chambers structures for students.

4th Grade students were researching Roman chariots for their academic work in their classrooms.

Through these projects, and a multitude of others, students are learning the basics of computer programming and robotics.

“Aware of their academic work, I challenged them to deploy their knowledge to design and construct their own chariots, powered by the Sphero BOLT robots," says Mrs. Chambers.

“The Sphero robots allow me to integrate multiple curricular standards throughout lessons, as in the projectbased engineering challenges that our Patriot students complete," explains Ms. Chambers.

"The project culminated with students programming their robot-powered chariots to navigate a course similar to the historical chariot racetrack.”
