I love to pull out our college history book, “Davidson County Community College: The First Forty Years, 1963-2003.” It was written by Ron Oakley, who taught history here for 37 years. I use all sorts of excerpts as I wave the book around and talk to people, attempting to bring meaning to our current work or to deepen my own understanding of our connections to the past. And sometimes I make jokes … “Really? They thought the construction projects and air conditioning problems in the Summer of 1993 were bad? That doesn’t even compare to the Summer of 2024!”
What I really mean, though, is that the past is giving us clues about the future. The Summer of 1993 is giving us hope that, yes, of course we will persevere yet again in 2024 even with water leaks, power outages, and major HVAC replacement projects — it’s all just part of the hard work of maintaining campuses that are regularly praised for their beauty and their feel of being at home. You’re wondering about our highway road construction? Did you know that Ron Oakley wrote about traffic problems dating as far back as 1963? And now here we are in 2024, finally closing that loop as we near the completion of a massive overhaul of our highway interchange to improve safety and provide future access to undeveloped properties. The issues are not new, but now we can also see the future.
Our college looks different now than it did in 1963. Our programs are designed to meet current and future workforce demands, and our opportunities are developed to support today’s students. But I would challenge anyone to tell me they can’t find a connection, somewhere in our past, to our future. Sometimes the connection is emotional — the spirit with which Felix Gee and Doak Finch inspired Lexington and Thomasville to support higher education is akin to the spirit with which our communities inspire and support us today. Business and industry still look toward the college to build the future workforce — the curriculum and the equipment may be different, but the need for collaboration and partnership remain remarkably the same.
Although the pages of this annual report highlight some of our more recent initiatives and successes, I hope you are inspired — as I am every day — by those connections to our past that prove just how consistently the college has pursued its mission of serving our communities and our students. With your support now in this 61st year of the college, our future is full of opportunities. Thank you for being on this journey with us!
With much appreciation,
Jenny M. Varner President, Davidson-Davie Community College

The Small Business Center (SBC) at Davidson-Davie often looks for ways to collaborate with and support local businesses. In April, the Center took it a step further and invited area high school entrepreneurs to the inaugural Young Entrepreneurs Summit (YES), held at the historic Finch House in Thomasville.
More than 30 local entrepreneurs and business leaders heard pitches from 16 high schoolers who shared their inspiring ideas for businesses that would help revitalize their hometowns. Some of the business ideas included bake shops, handmade goods, coffee shops, allergyfriendly candles, gyms, real estate ventures, one-stop shop hair and beauty salons, entertainment companies and more.
SBC Director Dee Stokes utilized grant money from NC IDEA to help fund YES and also award the top three student presenters at the event. The SBC relies on grants like the one from NC IDEA and others to not only hold these types of innovative events, but to help local businesses continue to thrive. In August, the college received a $25,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation, which will be re-granted to downtown businesses in Thomasville to promote the revitalization and sustainability of the area with renovations, upgraded technology and improved storefronts.
That positive relationship between the college and local businesses ultimately helps students – as these same local business owners and entrepreneurs not only volunteered to serve at the YES event, but were also onhand to provide advice to students on how to start and maintain a business.
“When you instill values in these young people early on, they tend to do well,” Stokes said. “Everybody everywhere should be having events like this, and I’m so pleased with the outcome.”
Spring Break conjures up various images for different people: a getaway to the beach, a visit to family, or simply relaxing at home. However, for Davidson-Davie employees, it signifies a time to give back to the community. In March, 175 employees collaborated with 16 agencies across Davidson and Davie counties to support the communities that surround the college.
“Our employees at Davidson-Davie are such a special group of caring and kind individuals. The people in Davidson and Davie counties are our friends and neighbors, and it’s only natural to support these groups that are a vital part of our community,” said Jenny Varner, president of the college.
“Giving back to the community fits into our unofficial college theme of being a ‘Campus of Caring.’ ”
— Kristi Louya, Coordinator of Student Scholarships
Groups involved in the 2024 event included Pinebrook Elementary School in Davie County, Communities in Schools of Thomasville, Davidson Charter Academy, Family Services of Davidson County, J. Smith Young YMCA, Life Center of Davidson County, Davidson Medical Ministries, Pickett Elementary School in Lexington, Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Thomasville, A Storehouse for Jesus, Habitat for Humanity of Davie County, Father’s Storehouse, Phi Theta Kappa’s Adopt-A-Highway project, Smart Start of Davidson County, Davie County Senior Services, and a Davidson-Davie team making blankets for the homeless shelter.
The Day of Service is quickly becoming a timehonored tradition at Davidson-Davie, with employees connecting their favorite organizations to the college and creating service opportunities. “Giving back to the community fits into our unofficial college theme of being a ‘Campus of Caring,’” said Kristi Louya, coordinator of student scholarships. “It feels good to share our talents, time, and energy.”
These days our lives are filled with stress and hectic to-do lists, and Davidson-Davie is working hard to make sure that educational opportunities exist for all types of schedules. Whether it's in-person learning or online courses, weekend and evening assistance, health care, and more — the college continues to meet students where they are in life.
The array of options offered at the college serves its population well. “It’s an opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of our students,” said Keisha Jones, vice president of student affairs and chief diversity officer.
“These services help contribute to a campus culture where every student feels valued, supported and equipped to navigate the challenges they may encounter.”
The college introduced a website in September dedicated solely to online learners, too — Online.DavidsonDavie.edu. While online learning is not new, the postCOVID era has seen a rise in institutions experiencing growth in online learners. DavidsonDavie has followed suit by creating easy access for these remote students who are looking to further their education.
“More students now expect flexible options and prefer to engage online when possible,” noted Dori Lloyd, associate vice president of teaching, learning, innovation, and global engagement. “The college is strategically growing online options to meet the needs of our students as an extension of our friendly community, while at the same time maintaining affordability and flexibility.”
The website allows students to apply and view course options and a wide variety of career paths. Once enrolled, students are never left wondering how to navigate their journey. “College personnel help students manage the enrollment process and establish a personalized plan to fit their needs,” said Dr. Christy Forrest, vice president of academic programs and services. “Students are able to reach out to instructors for guidance, and tutoring and coaching is available 24/7 for most subjects.”
“The college is strategically growing online options to meet the needs of our students as an extension of our friendly community.”

Regardless of which path students choose, help is available at every step — whether it’s in person or online. “Recognizing the diverse needs and schedules of our students is essential,” Jones added. “Ensuring the well-being and success of our students is at the core of our commitment at Davidson-Davie.”
The responsibilities and commitments of being a college athlete mean successfully balancing schoolwork and sports. In their time playing for Davidson-Davie, student-athletes develop essential life skills like leadership, time management, and working with others to achieve a common goal — all skills that will serve them in their future careers.
Under the leadership of Athletic Director Matt Ridge, the athletic department prioritizes a balanced schedule of academics and sports. Recognizing the significance of academic achievement alongside athletic victories, Davidson-Davie has established a robust support system of coaches, advisors, staff, and faculty dedicated to helping athletes reach their goals.
The 2023 season saw the STORM women’s volleyball team setting more than just great shots — they also set several college records. With a program-high season record of 23 wins and only six losses, the recognitions piled up. In 2024, the STORM women’s volleyball team experienced a transitional year, with over half of the roster consisting of incoming freshmen. Although the wins were fewer than in 2023, the team has laid the groundwork for a great season in 2025.
• Two players receive All-Region First Team selection
• One player selected for All-Region Second Team
• Kennedy Powell and Gabby Greene receive NJCAA All-American nominations
• Carleigh Whitson selected for Region X All-Tournament Team
• Advancement to Region X Conference Semi-Finals
STORM fans had the opportunity to watch the men’s basketball team dominate the 2023-2024 regular season, ending with 21 wins and only one loss and winning the regional and district tournaments for the fifth year in a row.
Ranked second in the nation by an NJCAA national poll, the STORM was a number one seed for the National Tournament and made their fourth Final Four appearance, finishing the season with thirty-five wins and only two losses overall.

Davidson-Davie is a leading force in equipping students for the global workforce and world. Cultural competence is fostered through a wide range of cultural events, internationalized curriculum offerings, and study-abroad opportunities.
The year was busy with international travel through Davidson-Davie’s study abroad program. Students experienced Ireland, traveled to the Dominican Republic for a service-learning program in which they helped build greenhouses and other buildings, and journeyed to Bordeaux, France in the summer of 2024.
Davidson-Davie continues to enhance its international presence and cultural diversity through the Fulbright Language Teaching Assistants (FLTAs) program. Each year, FLTAs from various countries join the college to teach courses in their native languages — such as Irish, French, and Spanish — to both curriculum and continuing education students. In 2023-24 the college welcomed FLTAs and international students from Belarus, Brazil, Ireland, France, Germany, and Canada. These visitors become an integral part of the campus community, sharing their unique perspectives and contributing to students' global awareness.
The tradition of apprenticeships dates back thousands of years, to ancient Egypt and Babylon. Learning through hands-on experience has played a crucial role in shaping America, including George Washington, who apprenticed as a surveyor, and Benjamin Franklin, who worked to become a printer. Today, apprenticeships continue to flourish, and Davidson-Davie is leading the way.
Apprenticeships are employer-based programs that help workers learn the specialized skills needed in today’s work environment. On-the-job training and classroom instruction come together to help students earn nationally recognized credentials, and give employers access to talented, well-trained employees.
In 2019 Davidson-Davie Community College partnered with the Davidson and Davie Apprenticeship Consortium (DDAC), a group of manufacturing companies in Davidson and Davie counties made up of BMK, Wolverine Proctor, EGGER Wood Products, KURZ, Mohawk, Ingersoll Rand, Owens & Minor, and Cascade Die Casting Group. Participating students take a four-year curriculum in mechanical or electrical trades or a two-year production operator track. Not only is the cost of their education covered, but they also receive competitive pay during their apprenticeship, along with full benefits and eligibility for full-time employment upon graduation.
In 2022, Davidson-Davie Community College established the largest health care apprenticeship program in North Carolina. These apprenticeships consist of a wide range of occupations, including Medical Assisting, Medical Laboratory Technology, Nursing, Licensed Practical Nursing, Pharmacy Technology, Central Sterile Processing, Surgical Technology, and Nurse Aide.
The future of the workforce is promising, with the college establishing connections where employers and students need them most. Dedicated to the community, Davidson-Davie strives to connect employers with highly trained students who contribute to the entire company. From health care and mechanical workers to human resources professionals, Davidson-Davie students are wellprepared for the future.
Davidson-Davie celebrated the hard work and accomplishments of 1,120 graduates during the May commencement ceremonies. Graduates earned a collective total of 1,365 credentials.
In her remarks to the audience, which included graduates, family, friends, faculty, staff, community leaders, and more, Davidson-Davie President Jenny Varner reminded graduates, “You represent the future of our community, the future of our small businesses, our health care system and emergency responders, our manufacturing industries and skilled trades, our childcare centers and schools, and so much more.”
Trustees Chairman Bill Steed noted that Davidson-Davie continues to be recognized as one of the top high-performing and award-winning colleges in the state. Expressing his appreciation to the entire college family — including students, faculty, staff, Trustees, Foundation Board, and members of the community — he noted, “We are the community’s college, here to meet the needs of all who walk in our doors and committed to helping our community thrive.”

Davidson-Davie is doing its part in helping eliminate teacher shortages across the district and beyond with the Teacher Residency Program, which began in September of 2023. The program targets current teachers and professionals who already have a bachelor’s degree and have an interest in teaching in schools, but lack licensure needed for a K-6 classroom.
“Teachers in the area are in great demand, and we are finding that many professionals in the area are interested in making an impact on our children,” explained Sharon Carter, professor of early childhood education. “Children are truly the future of our community, and offering a program of this nature at Davidson-Davie sets the stage for success.”
Lucas Bruff, division chair, social and behavioral sciences, added that, “individuals seeking teaching licensure can complete all of the coursework online — and at a fraction of the cost. Previously, teacher licensure was only available as ‘lateral entry’ at four-year institutions at a higher expense.”
Now, over a year into the program, 27 students are currently enrolled, and more are expected to join next year. With available scholarship funds and a strong interest in the program, Davidson-Davie anticipates increased growth and potential expansion to include additional grade levels in the future.

For more than three decades, people from all over the state have come together to support the Davidson-Davie Foundation through its annual golf tournament. The event has been held at various courses over the years and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help fund student scholarships, innovative initiatives, and state-of-the-art facilities.
We thank the thousands of players who have supported this fundraising initiative over the years, and are especially appreciative of those who sponsored this year’s tournament!

The Davidson-Davie Foundation provides additional support for the college beyond state, county, and institutional dollars. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Foundation is a vehicle for donors to make gifts that may be tax-deductible. The Foundation also receives grants and other corporate and community support. Hundreds of scholarships are awarded each year; athletics and international education are examples of programs that benefit from Foundation support. The Foundation, in coordination with the college Board of Trustees, also pursues a variety of strategic initiatives to promote growth and excellence for Davidson-Davie.
Establishing an endowed scholarship or program fund ensures the lasting impact of your investment as it benefits current and future Davidson-Davie students.
Investing in the future is more than just a financial gift to the college. It means making a remarkable difference in the lives of current and future students, who will be prepared for promising careers and leadership in our community.
When you establish an endowed scholarship or program fund, your gift to the college becomes an investment that holds long-term value. Scholarships provide opportunity and encourage excellence among current and future students as they work diligently to achieve their academic and career goals at Davidson-Davie.
We are pleased to offer a variety of options to invest in our future through the establishment of a new scholarship or program fund.
Student Success Scholarship Endowed, named scholarship fund to benefit students upon completion of their degrees, giving them the funds to pay remaining school debts and get started in their careers. Minimum endowment: $30,000, payable over five years
Student Excellence Scholarship Endowed, named scholarship fund recognizing academic leadership and/or extracurricular excellence, with awards based strictly on merit. Minimum endowment: $15,000, payable over five years
Student Support Scholarship (or Program Fund) Endowed, named scholarship (or program) fund to support students with financial need or to support a program/service/initiative of Davidson-Davie. Minimum endowment: $15,000, payable over five years
Student Achievement Scholarship Supported through pledged gifts and designed to benefit students upon completion of their degrees, giving them the funds to pay remaining school debts and get started in their careers. Minimum commitment: multi-year pledge
Unendowed Scholarship Supported through ongoing gifts and designed to provide the scholarship (or program) assistance of your choosing. Minimum initial gift: $1,000
Or support your favorite existing scholarship or program fund!
A gift to the Davidson-Davie Foundation is a meaningful way to honor or remember a beloved family member or friend or to celebrate a special occasion. Individuals recognized through tribute gifts are highlighted in blue, followed by the donors.
