Especially for those of you who haven’t driven near our Davidson Campus recently, I hope the cover photo of this annual report allows you to feel a little of the magic that many of us get to experience every day. I like to think we are driving on a newly-paved path to the future.
This path happens to have beautiful roundabouts and clear directional signage, and engineers and the NCDOT have ensured that safety and efficiency are paramount. Those of us who have some knowledge of the college’s history, though, know that the path to this point was winding. Retired history instructor Ron Oakley wrote a history of our college in 2003 that documented traffic challenges dating as far back as the 1963 founding of the college. And the process of making incremental safety improvements over time, and then planning and executing a massive overhaul of an entire highway interchange, takes time. (Thank you, NCDOT, and state and local leaders.)
The path to a new interchange is not so different from the paths that people – including many of our students—take through life. That’s why we’ve said for a long time that “The Future Is Here” at our college, always acknowledging that while the path to each person’s future looks different, we are absolutely committed to guiding them on their journeys. That’s also why we’ve worked hard over the last decade to establish clear educational “pathways” to workforce credentials and degrees, making it as easy and affordable as possible for students to go from where they are to where they want to be.
In 2026, we will continue designing those pathways to success with special attention to preparing students for careers, transfer to bachelor’s degrees, and lifelong learning. A new strategic plan that will guide us through 2030, participation in a national initiative specifically for colleges in rural or semi-rural areas, the continued growth of our Davidson-Davie Online initiative – all are key components of helping students find their path to the future.
As always, thank you for your support of our students and our college. We are glad you are on this journey with us!
With much appreciation,

Jenny M. Varner President, Davidson-Davie Community College
Davidson-Davie is continuing on its path as one of North Carolina’s top-performing colleges. As part of the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS), Davidson-Davie is evaluated annually on performance measures for student success. For 2025, which is based on data reporting in 2023-24, Davidson-Davie earned three Exceeded Excellence levels and one Above Average level.
Davidson-Davie’s strategic planning process—including surveys, listening sessions, and a collaborative strategic planning committee—has allowed the entire campus community to have input in shaping the college’s plan through 2025.
In anticipation of the end of the current strategic plan, the college began a new strategic planning process in Spring 2025. Aligning with our participation as part of the Rural Guided Pathways Project—a national initiative focused on improving student success and post-completion outcomes— the new strategic plan framework focuses on students’ access and momentum, learning and completion, and employment and transfer, along with critical priorities to support faculty and staff and expand our infrastructure. Faculty, staff, students, and Trustees have contributed to the planning process between March and September 2025. Our new plan will position Davidson-Davie to continue leading in student success and contributing to regional workforce and community development. We look forward to having an updated plan to share with our community in January 2026.
Davidson-Davie Community College provides innovative and equitable learning experiences to empower individuals, transform lives, and prepare students for enhanced career and educational opportunities within a changing global community.

Volunteer service strengthens our communities and fosters a profound sense of purpose and personal fulfillment. Embracing this spirit, Davidson-Davie employees transformed a beautiful spring day into one of meaningful service, hard work, and giving back. More than 200 faculty and staff members participated in the college’s Fourth Annual Day of Service, contributing their time and efforts to support 20 community organizations across Davidson and Davie counties.
“Davidson-Davie is fortunate to have a group of incredibly kind and generous employees,” said Jenny Varner, president of Davidson-Davie. “They know the work they put in during this day of service is such a tremendous help to the communities we serve—and they help with smiles and a lot of spirit.”
Groups that benefited from this year’s Day of Service included:

Partnering with and helping them is important to everyone.”
Parker Tilley’s academic journey is a testament to determination, vision, and service. As a Davidson Early College student, Tilley took on a college experience at Davidson-Davie while also completing his high school education. In 2016, he earned not one but two associate's degrees while also completing his high school diploma. This remarkable achievement laid the foundation for continued academic success at Clemson University, where he earned a BS in both financial management and accounting and a minor in Public Policy. Now based in Atlanta, Tilley works as an investment grade syndicated finance associate at Truist Securities.
Tilley’s academic success has inspired his continued connection to Davidson-Davie, where he currently serves as the alumni representative on the Davidson-Davie Foundation Board of Directors. Through this role—and the several scholarships he has established—he actively supports current students and helps foster their educational journeys.
One of his most personal contributions is the Suann Clark Teacher Residency Memorial Scholarship, honoring his former teacher and cherished mentor. This scholarship helps cover the costs for current professionals who are pursuing teaching licenses. Suann’s daughter, Jessica, shared, “It’s moving to see my mother’s legacy honored so meaningfully. Our family is deeply grateful to Parker for establishing this scholarship. Through this tribute, her passion for teaching continues to make a difference.”
Inspired by his own experience as a Davidson-Davie Scholar of Global Distinction, Tilley also founded the Parker Tilley International Study Abroad Scholarship to help students broaden their horizons through travel. “Travel opens your eyes to the world beyond your classroom—it helps you learn about different people and places, and shows you how big and exciting life can be,” said Tilley.
Tilley’s support for the college is a family affair; his parents, Carol and Dwayne Tilley, have also established a scholarship at Davidson-Davie, growing the family’s legacy of generosity, investing in the community, and committing to student success.
“Parker represents the future of philanthropy—a new generation committed to meeting the needs of others and strengthening their communities,” said Kristin Briggs, executive director of the college’s Foundation.

In 2023, Davidson-Davie launched a dedicated website designed to make college more accessible for students who prefer or need to learn remotely. Online learning allows students to take college classes without being physically present on campus, which is especially helpful for working adults, parents, or those with transportation challenges. In 2025, nearly half of Davidson-Davie curriculum students are completing their entire education online, and about one-third are taking at least one course online — showing how digital access is reshaping the way people pursue higher education.
To ensure online courses are engaging and effective, faculty at Davidson-Davie have been collaborating with instructional designers to adapt their classes specifically for the online environment. This process— known as course redesign—focuses on rethinking how content is delivered, how students interact with materials, and how learning outcomes are achieved in a virtual setting.
So far, key courses in gateway math and English have undergone redesigns, along with programs in fire protection, social and human services, and early childhood education. These updates aim to improve clarity, accessibility, and student success in online formats.
To assess how well these offerings are meeting student needs, the college conducted a broad survey in Spring 2025. More than 1,300 students responded, sharing feedback on their experiences with onboarding, academic advising, the learning environment, and available support services. The results revealed high satisfaction across both online and in-person programs, underscoring the importance of providing multiple pathways to success.
“Online learning empowers students to access education anytime, anywhere—breaking down barriers of location and schedule, and allowing them to learn at their own pace in a way that fits their lives,” said Brooklyn Edwards, director, online student experience.

For the sixth straight season, the Davidson-Davie STORM men’s basketball team defended their home court with perfection, remaining undefeated at Brinkley Gym in 2024-25. They wrapped up the regular season with an impressive 26-3 record and continued their dominance by capturing the South Atlantic District Tournament title—a championship they’ve now claimed six years in a row. Ranked Number 7 in the national poll, the STORM entered the national tournament as the eighth seed and battled their way to a sixth-place national finish, solidifying their reputation as one of the top programs in the country. “Our guys showed incredible heart and resilience all year long. They’ve embraced the culture of excellence we’ve built here at Davidson-Davie, and I couldn’t be prouder of how they represented themselves and the college both on and off the court,” said head men’s basketball coach and athletic director, Matt Ridge.
Todd Hunt of Jerry Hunt Supercenter has made a generous contribution to Davidson-Davie Community College through a Name-Image-Likeness (NIL) partnership. This collaboration not only highlights the relationship between local businesses and student athletes—who have appeared in Jerry Hunt Supercenter commercials—but also provides each athlete with financial assistance to help offset everyday expenses. The impact of this initiative offers a meaningful boost to students as they pursue both academic and athletic success.

In 2022, the college launched its athletics Hall of Fame to celebrate the legacy of student athletes, coaches, and contributors who have shaped Davidson-Davie’s sports history. It serves as a lasting tribute to individuals whose dedication, talent, and leadership have left an indelible impact both on and off the court. By establishing the Hall of Fame, the college not only honors past achievements but also inspires current and future athletes to strive for excellence, and contribute meaningfully to their teams and communities.
This March, the college proudly welcomed four new inductees into its Hall of Fame, celebrating both former athletes and a philanthropic supporter whose contributions have had a significant impact on the Davidson-Davie athletic legacy. Deon Boyce, Jamarius Hairston, Katie Watkins Shelton, and Todd Hunt were honored. Legendary basketball coach Tubby Smith served as guest speaker helping to celebrate the character, leadership, and inspiration of the honorees.
Every three years, this event serves as a reminder of the values of hard work, teamwork, and excellence that define true champions.

Bridging the gap between classroom learning and being on the job is the focus of Davidson-Davie’s apprenticeship program.
In 2022, the college launched the largest health care apprenticeship program in North Carolina, incorporating a wide range of occupations, including Medical Assisting, Medical Laboratory Technology, Nursing, Licensed Practical Nursing, Pharmacy Technology, Central Sterile Processing, Surgical Technology, and Nurse Aide.

In November 2024, the college was recognized as an Apprenticeship Ambassador by the U.S. Department of Labor, and named as a member of a cohort of 138 organizations nationwide to earn the distinction for meeting and exceeding commitments to expand and diversify the Registered Apprenticeships Program.
The Registered Apprenticeships is a U.S. program that connects job seekers and employers looking for specific skill sets. Dr. Holly Myers, dean of Health Sciences at Davidson-Davie, was the driving force behind the project. “Not only is it an honor being recognized for the work we’ve done so far, but this gives the college a platform to make more connections and extend these apprenticeships,” Myers said. “Being an Apprenticeship Ambassador means Davidson-Davie is in the position to advocate, promote and grow—helping to create opportunities for good jobs across the country.”
“These apprenticeship opportunities are critical in addressing shortages in the healthcare field in our own community,” Myers said. “Providing on-the-job training in acute care settings not only allows students to become fully immersed in their career, but it also facilitates an overall unmatched learning experience, resulting in highly skilled employees.”
Davidson-Davie has also joined forces with the Davidson and Davie Apprenticeship Consortium (DDAC), a coalition of leading manufacturing companies in Davidson and Davie counties. Through this partnership, students can pursue a four-year curriculum in mechanical or electrical trades, or opt for a two-year track focused on production operations. Participants benefit from competitive wages, full employee benefits, and a tuition-free education—gaining valuable hands-on experience while earning industry-recognized credentials.
Since the initiative's launch, the U.S. Department of Labor has selected 441 Apprenticeship Ambassadors, including representatives of emerging and high-growth industries such as manufacturing, clean energy, education, financial services, healthcare, and hospitality. The program creates a national network of employers, labor organizers, industry associations, program sponsors, educators, workforce intermediaries, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders to serve as champions for expanding and diversifying the Registered Apprenticeships Program.

International travel provides students with a transformative experience beyond the classroom, allowing them to visit the distant places they have studied. By immersing themselves in new cultures, languages, and environments, students develop a broader global perspective.

This year, students traveled abroad to Ireland, Costa Rica, and Japan. Additionally, the college welcomed students and faculty to campus from Denmark, Belarus, Brazil, Honduras, and Canada. For those who were unable to travel in person, Davidson-Davie provided virtual cultural events, giving students a global experience without leaving home. Davidson-Davie faculty also engaged in international pursuits for greater knowledge. Danielle Richardson, a faculty member in the Spanish department, traveled to the University of Salamanca in Spain to participate in a teacher training program focused on teaching Spanish as a foreign language. Over the course of the week, seventy professors from the United States and Brazil immersed themselves in educational sessions that explored a variety of strategies to keep students engaged and make Spanish lessons more dynamic and innovative.
International travel fosters personal growth, builds cross-cultural communication skills, and opens doors to academic and career opportunities. It’s not just a journey—it’s an investment in a student’s future.

“Participating in the teacher training program was an incredible opportunity to deepen my understanding of teaching Spanish as a foreign language. The experience was enriching and connected me with other teachers from around the world.”

In response to feedback from industry partners about the need for radiologists in this area, Davidson-Davie has launched a new radiography pathway. This career is in high demand locally and offers competitive salaries.
“Davidson-Davie offers a wide range of career paths, including many in the health and wellness industry,” explains Jenny Varner, president of Davidson-Davie. “As the medical field continues to grow, the college seeks ways to meet the needs of our community. The radiography pathway is an ideal addition to our current career paths.”
The radiography program is the result of a High-Cost Start-Up initiative awarded from the System Office of North Carolina Community Colleges in the spring of 2023. With grant funding, renovations began on campus in the fall of 2024, and program director Shannon Everhart was hired in January 2025. Now, just a year after renovations and planning, a new cohort of 15 students have been accepted into the program for the fall semester.
Approved by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)—meaning students who complete the program are eligible to obtain their Radiography credential, the program lasts five semesters and is open to students who have completed high school and also students who are currently completing their senior year in high school.
“In our area, demand for radiographers—also known as radiologic technologists—is very positive,” Everhart says. “Overall growth in the field is projected to increase by 6 percent in a 10-year period nationally, and that’s faster than the average for all occupations.”
In 2024, the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) reported that radiologic technologists were in high demand and short supply. Vacancy rates reached an all-time high in 2023, and that high demand has resulted in salary increases and wide job availability.
Students completing this pathway can expect to find job opportunities working as X-Ray Technicians, Radiographers, Radiologic Technicians, and Travel Radiology Technicians. Opportunities for advancement are available with advanced education, training and experience.

Davidson-Davie Community College continues to grow with each passing year, and this academic year was no exception. The college celebrated the accomplishments of 1,320 graduates during the May commencement ceremonies. All told, the college awarded 1,962 credentials— including 707 associate degrees, 212 diplomas, and 1,042 certificate and pathway completions.
During the ceremony, President Jenny Varner addressed the graduates asking them to encourage others to attend college. “Do me a favor and tell them what you have accomplished—what all 1,320 of you have accomplished. And encourage them to cross this stage, too,” she noted.
President Varner added that the hard work of these students does not go unnoticed, sharing that people in the community often cheer when she tells them about the graduating class. “I’m going to promise you something that I want you to remember—you might be crossing this stage to a new future, but just remember that you will always have a home here, and will always be part of the Davidson-Davie family.”
Student Government Association President, Magali Del Carmen Martinez-Cruz reiterated Varner’s message of looking toward the future in her own remarks, inspiring students to not fear what the future holds—citing her own personal experiences. “We often believe that it’s the big decisions, dramatic leaps and bold announcements that shape our future. But in reality, it is the small acts of change that quietly mold who we are and who we become," Martinez-Cruz said.
As a year filled with both achievements and challenges came to a close, the 2025 graduating class of Davidson-Davie Community College celebrated graduation with pride—honoring their hard work, accomplishments, and looking ahead to a bright and promising future.

The Adult Learner Initiative at community colleges is a comprehensive effort designed to reengage adults—typically aged 25 and older—who have some college experience but have not yet earned a degree. This initiative provides targeted support to help these learners complete credentials that advance their careers and personal goals. As of this fall semester, 1,215 adult learners are enrolled in Davidson-Davie curriculum courses.
Adult learners often face unique challenges that differ significantly from those of traditional students. Many balance full-time employment, parenting responsibilities, and financial pressures, while also navigating technological barriers and academic programs that may not be tailored to their needs. These factors underscore the importance of flexible, accessible learning options and student-centered support systems that empower adult learners to succeed.
Jasmine Hargrave, director of Reconnect and Success at Davidson-Davie, explains that many adult learners return to campus after years in the workforce for career advancement, additional credentials or even a career change. “Some employers even offer tuition reimbursement programs and workplace partnerships, encouraging employees to further their education.”
This year, Davidson-Davie proudly launched its inaugural Adult Learner Hall of Fame, celebrating 21 exceptional students nominated by faculty and staff. These honorees demonstrated remarkable perseverance, academic excellence, and an unwavering commitment to completing their credentials.
Leigh Ann Norris, instructor and program director of Pharmacy Technology, shared her admiration for the honorees: “Adult learners bring a unique strength to the classroom. Their determination to succeed—often while balancing work, family, and school—is nothing short of inspiring. Recognizing their achievements through the Hall of Fame is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to pursue your goals.”

For over three decades, the Davidson-Davie Foundation golf tournament has been more than just a day on the golf course—it’s been a driving force behind student success. Now in its 33rd year, the tournament continues to provide essential funding for scholarships, innovative programs, and critical support services at the college. Thanks to the generosity of tournament sponsors, players, and volunteers, countless students have been able to pursue their educational goals and contribute meaningfully to our community. This enduring tradition reflects the power of partnership and the belief that investing in education transforms lives.

The Davidson-Davie Foundation provides additional support for the college beyond state, county, and institutional dollars. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Foundation is a vehicle for donors to make gifts that may be tax-deductible. The Foundation also receives grants and other corporate and community support. Hundreds of scholarships are awarded each year; athletics and international education are examples of programs that benefit from Foundation support. The Foundation, in coordination with the Board of Trustees, also pursues a variety of strategic initiatives to promote growth and excellence for Davidson-Davie.
Establishing an endowed scholarship or program fund ensures the lasting impact of your investment as it benefits current and future Davidson-Davie students.
Investing in the future is more than just a financial gift to the college. It means making a remarkable difference in the lives of current and future students, who will be prepared for promising careers and leadership in our community.
When you establish an endowed scholarship or program fund, your gift to the college becomes an investment that holds long-term value. Scholarships provide opportunity and encourage excellence among current and future students as they work diligently to achieve their academic and career goals at Davidson-Davie.
We are pleased to offer a variety of options to invest in our future through the establishment of a new scholarship or program fund.

Student Support Scholarship (or Program Fund) Endowed, named scholarship (or program) fund to support students with financial need or to support a program/service/initiative of Davidson-Davie. Minimum endowment: $15,000, payable over five years
Student Achievement Scholarship Supported through pledged gifts and designed to benefit students upon completion of their degrees, giving them the funds to pay remaining school debts and get started in their careers. Minimum commitment: multi-year pledge
Unendowed Scholarship Supported through ongoing gifts and designed to provide the scholarship (or program) assistance of your choosing. Minimum initial gift: $1,000
Or support your favorite existing scholarship or program fund!

A gift to the Davidson-Davie Foundation is a meaningful way to honor or remember a beloved family member or friend or to celebrate a special occasion. Individuals recognized through tribute gifts are highlighted in blue, followed by the donors.
