This month the SWT established a new mobile de-snaring team in the Shompole–Nguruman ecosystem. The KWS requested support from the SWT to establish this new team to help with the containment of rampant bushmeat poaching and Human-Wildlife Conflict Arrests this month included 8 poachers, 2 charcoal burners, 2 trespassers, 2 woodcarvers, 2 arrests for illegal grazing and 2 arrests for illegal harvesting. From the poachers arrested the teams confiscated 395kgs of bushmeat, 250kg of which was found by the Ziwani team. Other illegal activities attended to include the eviction of 53 livestock bomas, the destruction of 20 charcoal kilns and 16 hideouts/camps. Nearly 80kgs of elephant ivory was also recovered from the field during May and securely handed over the KWS. The teams assisted the Tsavo Veterinary Unit with 4 cases involving 2 elephants, 1 lion and 1 wild dog. A bushfire was also responded to as well as 87 problem elephants. The Ithumba team pushing 59 of these elephants out of community lands and back into the safety of the park. This month the Mobile North team took annual leave whilst the Galana, Chyulu, Sobo and Meru teams worked part of the month. The rest of the teams were operating fulltime.
