The month of March has seen a significant drop in the number of poaching incidences and illegal activities taking place within the Tsavo Conservation Area compared to 2013, whilst similar to February storms have continued to sweep throughout the region, keeping water holes full and vegetation thick and green with large herds of elephants gathering throughout the TCA, enjoying the lush habitat. All units were deployed in the field full time during the month, whilst the Ziwani Anti-Poaching team took a month of leave. Most arrests involved charcoal burning, livestock herders and loggers, whilst 6 bush-meat poachers were successfully arrested and handed over to the police. The Bura Unit uncovered four elephant carcasses from within their area of patrol in southern Tsavo East with support from aerial surveillance. They were able to retrieve tusks from two of the carcasses, all of which were clear to have been killed by poachers, whilst the other carcasses were found with the tusks already taken.

Carcass of an elephant sighted by the DSWT aerial support aircraft whilst flying over southern Tsavo East.
ELEPHANT CONCERN 08/03/2014
An elephant was reported injured, the team and vet unit went to look concluding that it had an old injury which didn’t need treatment.
ELEPHANT CARCASS 09/03/2014
Remnants of an elephant carcass were found in southern Tsavo East by Tsavo Trust aircraft and the ivory was recovered.

The team also discovered a fresh elephant carcass with the tusks still intact, which were recovered by the Bura team
ELEPHANT CARCASS 18/03/14
Another elephant carcass was sighted by the DSWT aerial surveillance aircraft, which was hidden under cut vegetation, the tusks were missing.
OLD ELEPHANT CARCASS 24/03/14
An old elephant carcass was discovered fully decomposed on a daily patrol.

A freshly put out fire was found by the team during patrols around the Dakota area.

The Bura team discovered tools and equipment from a poacher left hidden in the bush in the Dakota Area.
POACHED ELEPHANT 31/03/14
The Bura team discovered another freshly poached elephant with 5 bullet wounds. The ivory was intact and was retrieved.
