January was a month which experienced a high level of human-elephant conflict, requiring extensive operations from the DSWT ground teams and Aerial Unit in conjunction with the KWS and other NGO’s operating in the area. One area particularly badly hit was the Sagalla Hill area, where communities were becoming increasingly hostile to large herds of elephants which were moving through the area seeking vegetation and water. The Burra team spent a day with the Aerial Unit and KWS pushing around 200 elephants out from this area and into the safety of the Park, for the protection of the elephants and the community members. Similarly, the Chyulu and Kenze teams are always on alert for human-elephant conflict and are on hand to resolve any issues, over 70 elephants were redirected into the Chyulu Hills having found themselves in community areas.

In total during the month 408 snares were collected, over half of these were found or confiscated from poachers in Meru National Park by the Meru team. There were also 11 arrests including 9 bushmeat poachers and 2 herders arrested for illegal grazing their cattle in the Park. 7kgs of bushmeat was confiscated from arrested poachers, the meat mostly that of dikdiks, whilst the teams destroyed 17 charcoal kilns, 9 shootings blinds and several illegal cannabis plantations in the Chyulu Hills.

The Burra team helped attend to a cheetah with the vet unit during January whilst the Ithumba team helped treat an injured elephant and the Ziwani team attended to a buffalo along with the resident vet. Elephant tusks were also recovered by the Mobile team who collected them from GPS coordinates given by one of the DSWT pilots who had spotted the tusks from the air.

All teams were operating in January with the Tiva and Ziwani teams working for half the month.
