JANUARY 2014 BURA TEAM PATROL AREA: Southern sector of Tsavo East NP & the Taita Ranches
MONTHLY SUMMARY The Bura team assisted in a baby elephant rescue at the beginning of the month which was badly snared, working with the Voi Keepers to capture it and transport it to the Voi airstrip to be flown to the DSWT Nursery in Nairobi. The team encountered significant livestock intrusion along the Voi-Buchuma boundary of Tsavo East NP along with high cases of firewood collection. The team uncovered 2 cable snares targeted at elephants and captured 15 people involved in illegal activities and were involved in a successful undercover operation.

JANUARY 2014 CHYULU TEAM PATROL AREA: Chyulu National Park, Kibwezi Forest and surrounding communities
MONTHLY SUMMARY The Chyulu team encountered high cases of logging, charcoal, woodcarving, cattle intrusion, miraa harvesting and a marijuana plantation. They laid an ambush and arrested 8 people involved in charcoal burning and miraa harvesting whilst encountering Masai morans hunting lions, removing them from the Chyulu Hills National Park. The team were also involved in fighting an extensive forest fire caused by woodcarvers in the Chyulus.

The Duma (Chyulu) team patrolled chyulu hills area, and found 1/4 acre of "bhangi" (cannabis sativa) planted which they uprooted.

JANUARY 2014 KENZE TEAM PATROL AREA: Kibwezi Forest and surrounding communities
MONTHLY SUMMARY The Kenze team assisted in the fighting of the forest fire with the Chyulu team whilst conducting regular foot patrols within the Kibwezi Forest where very few signs of illegal activity were sighted apart from a case of logging and woodcarving.

JANUARY 2014 TIVA TEAM PATROL AREA: Northern sector of Tsavo East NP with a focus along the Tiva River
MONTHLY SUMMARY The Tiva team escorted the DSWT veterinary unit based in Voi to a case of a arrowed elephant bull in the northern area this month. The Tiva team along with the Ithumba team helped Dr Poghon in the darting operation where unfortunately the bull was euthanized due to such severe injuries whilst the tusks were recovered by the Kenya Wildlife Service. The team during the month also made 5 arrests of charcoal burners and poachers.

The Nyati (Tiva) team patrolled athi river towards gazi area, arrested 3 charcoal burners with 3 panga, 3 shovels, 2 jembe and 1 axe.
ELEPHANT EUTHANIZED 26/01/14
The Nyati (Tiva) team supported the DSWT vet unit from Voi with an injured elephant which had to be euthanized and its tusks removed.

JANUARY 2014 ZIWANI TEAM PATROL AREA: Central sector of Tsavo West NP south of the Tsavo River
MONTHLY SUMMARY The Ziwani team uncovered a poacher’s hideout whilst recovering a cable snare targeted at trapping an elephant, along with revealing charcoal burning in the surrounding ranches of Tsavo West National Park. The team also assisted in the rescue if a baby zebra along with the Voi stockade keepers. The zebra is currently doing well at the Voi stockades.

JANUARY 2014 MTITO TEAM PATROL AREA: Tsavo Triangle, northern sector of Tsavo West NP & surrounding communities
MONTHLY SUMMARY The Mtito team focused on the Tsavo Triangle during the month and the community areas near Mtito Andei recovering a considerable number of snares, saved a snared dik-dik, whilst destroying two shooting platforms and a shooting blind used by poachers to target passing elephants. Whilst on patrol inside the boundary of Tsavo West they came across fresh rhino footprints and provided extensive patrols to secure the area against poachers. Six arrests were made including two poachers, charcoal burners and woodcarvers.

The Chui (Mtito) team patrolled the Triangle area, lifted 11 small snares and 1 trapped dikdik was rescued from a snare, 2 medium sized kilns were also destroyed.

The Chui (Mtito) team patrolled the Mang'elete area along tsavo west fence line, lifted 24 small snares in the area.

POACHER ARREST 18/01/14
The Chui (Mtito) team patrolled the triangle area and sighted a poacher's fresh cooking area. 1 suspected game meat poacher/charcoal burner was arrested.
CHARCOAL BURNERS 21/01/14
The Chui (Mtito) team patrolled the triangle area, destroyed 1 charcoal kiln; the team also handled 2 men who were caught by the Peregrine team and confiscated an extra 19 small snares, a knife and 2 pangas.
POACHERS ARREST 26/01/14
The team laid an ambush at Darajani from midnight and apprehended 2 elephant poachers who were taken to Kamboyo for further interrogation. They had 2 bows, 6 arrows, poison, and 1 elephant tail.

JANUARY 2014 ITHUMBA TEAM PATROL AREA: Northern sector of Tsavo East NP, northern boundary & Gazi
MONTHLY SUMMARY The Ithumba team discovered a recent elephant carcass which had been snared in the northern area and the tusks had been removed. They also came across extensive logging in the far northern area of Tsavo East and a considerable number of snares were collected, making 4 arrests. While on patrol the team sighted a large bull elephant with severe poisoned arrow wounds and they camped nearby to monitor the elephant whilst waiting for the veterinary unit to arrive. The following day assisted by the Tiva team, the elephant was darted but sadly had to be euthanized due to its severe wounds.

The Ndovu (Ithumba) patrolled the kyaerock area, where they found and destroyed an old poacher's hideout

The Ndovu (Ithumba) patrolled the Tundani area and spotted an injured elephant requesting vet assistance. The elephant was euthanized.
