Consulting Business Everyone has some kind of knowledge, most of which is rarely or never used. Put your knowledge to work for you and become a successful independent consultant for any business pitch. The Explanatory Dictionary defines the concept of "consultant" as follows: "An expert in a particular field who works in a public or private organization and gives advice on his special problems." Sounds pretty vague, doesn't it? But you probably have your own, more disciplined definition of "what a consultant is." Successful business people understand who their advisors are. According to Anna Flowers, a spokeswoman for the Association of Professional Consultants in Irvine, California, in 1997 American companies and businesspeople spent more than $12 billion on consulting. Impressive? And the number of requests for advice is increasing every year. More and more people are becoming counselors because modern technology makes it easier for people to communicate and cross any distance. Expertise is the key to success A consultant's job is to conduct consultations. It is very simple and there is no magic formula or secret to success in counseling. What really separates a good consultant from a bad one is a passion for knowledge and a constant pursuit of excellence. Well, and, of course, a good consultant should know professionally what he or she is advising on. This is actually very important. As you can see, today anyone, regardless of age or social status, can become a consultant. What you really need is to discover your special gift from the beginning. For example, you can easily and freely work with computers. Lately, do you want to keep up to date with the latest software updates that come out almost daily? You can turn your knowledge into a resource that people are willing to pay money for. Also you can work as a consultant in computer equipment and IT technologies without any problem. Or are you a fundraising expert? Perhaps you have worked in some non-profit organization, engaged in marketing or public relations (public relations), and during the years of your work you realized exactly what you need to do to raise funds for certain purposes? What it takes to become a consultant Before you become an independent consultant, there are some specific questions you need to decide for yourself. To get started, find out what documents, certificates and licenses you need to work. The truth is, depending on the characteristics of your profession, a special certificate or even a state license may be required. Another question that's best to answer yourself as honestly as possible is: "Am I qualified enough to be a counselor?" Before you put a sign on your door and expect customers to come play, make sure you have the right qualities to land the job.
