Just like this publication, it is packed with inspirational ideas and photos you can use in creating the landscape of your dreams. It also contains lots of informative and helpful resources for homeowners like you, expert advice on various landscape and garden related topics, and links to the products and manufacturers that we carry in the Garden Center or through our DIY hardscape supply division—Bucks County Hardscape & Building Supply. If you have a minute, I would highly recommend you check it out at gasper.net. As we combed through each page of the website over the past year, updating photos and text, my team and I were charged with putting to words our Gasper Design Philosophy. As I reflected back on the 30+ years of design service that our company has provided, our philosophy was clear: At Gasper we strive to form the perfect client-designer partnership. Our designs cannot be defined by a single style because each and every design is a custom product that is created specifically to reflect our homeowners. Your landscape, like your home, should be an extension of your vision, tastes, and lifestyle. A Gasper design is the result of careful listening and good communication, combined with creativity and vision, quality workmanship and materials, and years of design expertise.

It’s hard to believe that over 30 years have passed since Bob Gasper first started Gasper Landscape Design & Construction. Pictured with our newest addition to the family, Holding Lucy is her aunt, Dana Gasper, proud grandparents Bob Gasper, Paula Gasper, and Lucy's father, Bobby Gasper.

At Gasper, we know that each and every one of our ‘projects’ is someone’s home; that our ‘clients’ are people and their families. Every single day we work with real people, real homes and our customer base grows from real recommendations from happy homeowners to their friends and neighbors. nothing in their backyard except for grass and a small deck off of their kitchen that had been built with the house. The deck had no stairs to the ground, and therefore, no real connection to the backyard. After they tackled a few interior projects, like finishing their basement into an entertainment area — complete with bar and arcade games, they knew they were ready to work on the outdoor areas. Cari did her homework and got three to four estimates for the project. She sheepishly admits that she called Gasper last because she thought Gasper would be too expensive since Gasper is very well-known. Chad and Cari met on site with Gasper sales designer Jim Folz and had a very positive feeling right away because Jim gave them great feedback on their initial thoughts for the patio.

model also showed the professionalism of Gasper. We felt like we were in good hands. It gave us the understanding that the job was going to be done right.”

Within a couple of weeks, Jim came back with a few different design ideas and concepts which he presented using a 3-D model. Cari recalled, “Gasper’s design was very different from the other designs we had received. Plus, I really needed the visual. I needed to see my

backyard transformed in front of me and Gasper was able to do that.” Chad added, “The model also showed the professionalism of Gasper. We felt like we were in good hands. It gave us the understanding that the job was going to be done right and that we were not working with a contractor who was going to disappear and not show up.” To their surprise and relief, when they received Gasper’s proposal the cost was near the middle of the other proposals they collected. “They were not the highest,” Cari confides. “If you want quality and want it done right, as with everything, you need to pay a little more. Gasper was not the cheapest, but I never had to worry. I have heard horror stories about working with contractors — working with Gasper was not a horror story.” Cari and Chad love to entertain and the new paver patio has really become an extension of their home, tying together the upstairs and the downstairs, giving the house an essential connection to the yard. Now that the patio and the stone cook station is adjacent to the finished basement doors, when the family entertains or host parties — like their annual Halloween bash — it’s easy for guests to flow from the basement rec room onto the patio. Their children, Jordan and Luke, love the new gas fire pit because it is the perfect spot to invite their friends over to listen to music and roast marshmallows. The addition of low-voltage landscape lighting was also a game changer. CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

The back wall of the COOK STATION is raised 6-inches to create a space for bar-height seating and a popular place to hang out with the chef. The cast stone veneer and graphite leather finished granite counter tops chosen compliment the paving stones perfectly.

Featured Project 2020 VISION

No need to worry about wood with a fire pit fueled with natural gas from your home. This fire pit is easily started with the turn of a key and there is no clean-up afterwards. The convenience makes this cast stone veneer FIRE PIT something that will be frequently used any day of the week. Chad and Cari decided to add this extension to the PAVER PATIO underneath the existing deck. It created a comfortable, shaded nook that they use for more intimate conversations together or with friends. It also makes a great, quiet place to sit and read a book.

Before, when it got dark, Chad and Cari felt like they had to come inside the house. Now, with the landscape lighting, there is not a limit on the time they can spend outdoors on a nice evening. “Before, we were limited by the sunset, now we are limited by bedtime,” muses Chad. Cari agrees that one of the best parts of the new patio is sitting outside together as opposed to inside watching TV. “It brings us all together — outside,” she explains. Despite her initial hesitation on calling Gasper, Chad and Cari couldn’t be happier with the final product. “Our patio is not elaborate or grand, our backyard isn’t huge, but for the space we have it’s perfect,” Cari concludes. Mark the driveway entrance to your property with hand-crafted masonry

STONE PIERS AND WALLS. A personalized address plaque (by Whitehall and available through Gasper Home & Garden Showplace) makes it super easy for guests to find your home.

Amidst different textures and shades of green, bright blue flowering Salvia line either side of this rectangular, dry laid BLUESTONE WALKWAY. Piers with lanterns mark the way to the front door as if stone sentinels by day, and provide warm, safe, path lighting by night.

This elegant random rectangular BLUESTONE patio is edged with real clay brick in a soldier/sailor pattern. Surrounded by walls on three sides, and a tall evergreen hedge on the fourth, this courtyard patio is private and secluded. The perfect place to hide away. Who said random rectangular bluestone always has to be — rectangular? Bluestone is a very versatile material. It can look very formal, but it can also look very natural such as on this gracefully curved, DRY LAID PATIO.

Patios 2020 VISION

For the most natural looking pavers, consider an IRREGULAR BLUESTONE patio such as this one. Gasper’s paving artisans carefully piece each piece of bluestone together like a puzzle or tapestry. The resulting product is a naturally, beautiful mosaic of color and texture, with varying but tight fitting joints. There is ample bar height seating on this deck under the covered roof. The Synergy REAL-WOOD CEILING is prefinished and completely sealed, so no painting or staining required.

Truly a destination in the garden, this grand styled pavilion STRUCTURE is flanked on both sides with two white pergolas and cut flower gardens. It has an eyebrow ARBOR that runs along the face of the structure. The tall, round columns are very traditional.

This Gasper-built FOUR-SEASON ROOM is warm and inviting and thanks to A/C and radiant flooring, it is also usable year round. The large windows and doors still bring the feeling of the outside garden in.

Structures 2020 VISION

The illuminated space under the covered PAVILION can extend the usability of your outdoor patio late into the evening. Exterior-rated ceiling fans help keep the air moving and insects away. This pavilion sits atop a raised patio with a RAILING displaying decorative balusters.

A decorative block fireplace becomes a focal point for deep comfortable seating and matching seat walls supply surplus seating for this new PORCH ROOF (right). Our carpenters pay special attention to details, such as wrapping all exposed wood with PVC to make sure that a Gasper-built structure is built to last a lifetime.

A SPECIAL OCCASION When Peter and Angela’s son Jonathan and his fiancé, Emily, announced their engagement, Peter and Angela decided to build a space in their backyard to host the wedding. Peter often hosts company picnics at his home and he and Angela have two younger children who could also potentially use the space, so it felt like a great investment. Gasper’s design included a custom outdoor pavilion which is regularly used to shade a dining table. The day of the wedding, the pavilion was used by the bride and groom to take their vows, then by the string trio to provide music during the reception, and lastly as a dramatic setting for the couple’s first dance. The lower bluestone patio became the dance floor and the upper patio, which featured a linear gas fire pit, became the cocktail tent. The space was also designed to house two large tents.

Erin and Andrew S. asked us to create a space where they could spend time year round with friends and family — a gathering space for birthday parties and special dinners and game nights with friends. The team at Gasper is very happy to have helped celebrate Erin’s birthday. The large wet-laid bluestone patio has plenty of space for a large dining table to seat the whole family and a few guests. Dramatically lit for the evening, the pavilion provided the perfect location for the newlyweds to take their first dance together surrounded by family and friends.

John Schweizer

Bobby Gasper has worked with the company since he was a young boy. He officially started off working retail in 2005, and then shifted to landscaping where he worked on a landscape/hardscape crew from 2007 to 2010. During that time, Bobby also studied Landscape Architecture and Business at West Virginia University. Like his father, Bobby takes an interest in every project bearing the company name. Bobby has been an influential member of the sales design team since 2009, where he uses his wealth of experience to transform the customer’s ideas and visions of outdoor living into reality.

John Schweizer is the Senior Sales Designer at Gasper Landscape Design & Construction and has been with the company since 1999. While attending Bloomsburg University as a biology major, John’s “summer job” quickly became his newfound career. After graduation, John began working full-time in the landscape industry and has accumulated 10 years of professional experience as a landscape construction foreman. This hands-on experience in all areas of construction has served John well in his ability to communicate complex design solutions to his clients, as well as helped him oversee the project management of many of Gasper’s largest installations. John has been the project manager for several of Gasper’s P.L.N.A. award-winning projects and cares for every project, large or small, as though it were for his own home.

Nick Lupinacci Nick Lupinacci has been a landscape designer with Gasper since February 2005 and manages our in-house design team. Nick received a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design and Ornamental Horticulture from Delaware Valley University and a master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Temple University. With over 20 years of experience in the residential design-build field, Nick combines creativity and construction know-how to each and every design he works on. Christina Reeves, rla Christina Reeves is a PA registered Landscape Architect, and has been on the design staff at Gasper’s since spring 2011. Christina comes to us with over 25 years of experience in the field of Landscape Architecture and has specialized in residential design. Coming from a long line of Penn Staters, she earned her BS in Landscape Architecture at Pennsylvania State University, where she won an ASLA merit award for her studies. This is why for most project presentations we utilize a computerized 3-D model. The 3-D model allows you to take a virtual walk-through of your proposed landscape project. Want to

His passion for golf led him to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture from Temple University. W HAT IS Z EN?

Gasper’s CROCODILE BENCHES are truly a fun piece to add to the garden, covered porch or three-season room. Available in 48-60" bench sizes, and either a teal or natural stained finish, these benches are weather-resistant and ready to make a statement. But watch out — we’re not sure if they bite!

Many people think Zen is a religion, but it is not. Zen centers on a personal relationship with your own mind, and a higher, undefined entity outside of yourself. Being Zen is essentially a state of being at peace with your own thoughts, and being self-aware of your place within the universe. This state of being is thought to be achieved through different forms and styles of meditation. In fact, the word Zen is derived from the Chinese word Ch’an, which is directly taken from Indian sanskrit word dhayana, which means meditation. Two popular and simple methods of meditation are sitting and walking meditations — and the garden is a great place to try either. Even if you are not fully committed to being Zen, adding just five minutes of meditation to your day has proven to provide great health benefits such as reducing stress and anxiety.

Peaceful Possibilities 2020 VISION

During her trip to Bali, Dana Gasper stood next to our largest available BUDDHA STATUE to create a sense of scale. This statue is an amazing 8½-feet tall. No need to worry if you don’t have room for an 8-foot statue — we have an incredible array of sizes and styles of Buddha statues in our Zen Market collection, from 8-feet to 8-inches tall.

Beautifully hand carved, our lava stone, pagoda-styled LANTERNS (below) make the perfect focal in a Japanese or Zen-styled garden. A small tea light or candle can be placed in the lantern to illuminate it in the evening hours.

A CAIRN (pronounced like karen) is a man-made pile of rocks used as a memorial or a landmark. Our recreated cairns and riverstone rock towers (above) don’t need to be artfully balanced, but they would still make a great landmark in your garden. Use them to mark the way along a garden path, or as a focal point on deck or patio. Plenty of sizes and configurations available.
