G ASPER DESIGN PROCESS | CHOOSING A CONTRACTOR
Experience the Gasper Difference It takes more than a pick-up truck, a wheelbarrow, and a shovel to be a professional landscape contractor. Here are some important factors to consider when choosing a contractor for your next project. Is the contractor you’re considering a legitimate business? Do they have a brick and mortar office? It can be extremely risky to be working with a contractor who does not provide an actual office address and simply works from a business card or worse yet, out of the back of a truck. Will they still be in business if you have a problem a couple of years down the road? At Gasper Landscape Design & Construction we have been in business for more than 35 years. Our home offices are located in Richboro, Pennsylvania and our doors are always open to your visits.
Are they properly insured? Does the contractor carry enough liability insurance to cover the cost of your home in the unlikely event of a major accident? Does the contractor carry workers’ compensation insurance to protect you from the liability of injury that may occur on your property during construction? Gasper carries all the necessary coverage to ensure that you and your property are protected if needed. We are happy to provide proof of insurance upon request.
Will the contractor do most of their own work? Is the contractor a single individual who sub-contracts a majority of the work out to others or does the contractor do most of the work in-house? Do they have the manpower necessary to get your project completed in a timely manner? At Gasper, we employ various experienced landscapers, carpenters, masons and horticulturists as part of our Gasper team to ensure the work is completed to the quality and consistency we demand. For the work that we cannot do or do

not do regularly enough to have people on staff, we have many good working relationships with other tradesmen that we can bring to your project team. These usually include engineers, electricians and plumbers. The size of our operation matters too. Running up to 20 crews during our busiest seasons allows us the flexibility needed to allocate the man power needed to get your project completed on time.
Does the contractor hold required professional certifications and licenses? Are they certified with the Department of Agriculture as required by Pennsylvania law? Gasper is. Are they members of the Pennsylvania Landscape and Nursery Association (PLNA)? Gasper is. Do their employee’s hold state certified pesticide applicator licenses? Gasper’s employees do. Do they employ Interlocking Concrete Paving Institute (I.C.P.I) certified installers? Gasper does. At Gasper, we value the certification and education needed to insure your project is installed using the highest industry standards.
Can you trust that your project will be completed correctly? What do others have to say about your contractor? Ask the contractor if he is willing to supply referrals. Look for customer reviews from trusted online sites, as well as social media. At Gasper we are very proud of our high approval ratings and we would be happy to refer you to our many satisfied clients. Happy Hour
A large entertainment space worthy of hosting their neighborhood Sunday night ‘Happy Hour,’ was top of the wish list for this issues’ Gasper-built featured project.

The Project
This project was phased and built over 3+ years. Project highlights include a Unilock paver patio with Pennsylvania bluestone accents, a masonry cook station and fireplace, new composite deck with roof structure and a complete overhaul of the front walkway and landscaping.
Why They Loved Working with G asper
JUDY: I think the front is important because it is the first impression you give to people; but it is not only for other people, it is what I see every day when I pull into the driveway when I come home from work. I really like what the Gasper Designer (Nick Lupinacci) did in the front. There is always something blooming. JIM: One of the things we liked about working with Gasper is that we always got notifications and good communication about scheduling. Gasper was upfront about their scheduling and once they started, they were here every day until they finished. JUDY: We did the work in three phases over three or so years. Gasper was fine with working the plan in phases and I am glad we did the work that way because we were able to live with each phase for a year and then evaluate how we used the space before proceeding to the next phase.

he new deck (above left) is a natural extension of the house and with the addition of the roof, it is a much more functional space, being shaded and protected from the elements. The original deck was a long, thin rectangle which made it awkward to place furniture. The new deck bumps out in several places, creating more usable space for both dining and comfortable seating.

t is easier for our featured homeowners to entertain with the new extension of the pool patio (left) which creates more opportunities for seating: in front of the fireplace, bar seating on the new cook station and an extra dining set poolside. They particularly look forward to the fall and cooler weather because sitting around the new Gasper-built masonry fireplace is so enjoyable.
O
ne way to create interest in your hardscape is to mix a variety of paving materials together. Here the landings in the steps and walkway are highlighted with irregular Pennsylvania bluestone, bordered with a Unilock Copthorne inner border (a three-color blend) and Transition paver outer border (in Sycamore). Bronze chinahat path lights (by CAST) and under the tread lighting (by Kichler) illuminate the walk in the evening hours, adding both beauty and safety.

ometimes when you see a large Gasper-built project, you may not realize that the job was built in multiple phases. In fact, creating a phased plan is a common approach to breaking up large projects into much more manageable sized projects and can be done for many reasons including budget and time considerations.

The Front Landscape
Although the first thing people see, the front landscape for this featured project was actually the third and last phase of work that Gasper completed for Judy and Jim. A new bluestone walkway and a refresh of the original landscaping instantly upped their home’s curb appeal.

Cook Station
Creating the perfect entertainment area was actually Jim and Judy’s top priority and phase 1. The new fireplace and patio have become an extension of the pool area and are able to accommodate more guests with ample room for comfortable seating.
The masonry cook station with bar seating was also part of Phase 1 for this project but is a common design feature that many of our clients decide to build in later phases. This cook station has professional grade Lynx appliances such as the grill and refrigerator and stainlesssteel storage and trash drawers.

Deck + Roof
Phase 2 involved upgrading to a Timbertech composite deck as well as addressing Jim & Judy’s need for protection from the sun and elements with an attached Gasper-built roof structure. Now the deck is an extension of the house and is used frequently throughout the year — even in the winter! 8

Is there a style that better suits people like me? —Angie F., Furlong Looking for something not too traditional or not too contemporary? Try Transitional! Many people are looking to live a little bit more casually and hence are moving away from the formality of traditional styles (scrolled arms and heavier, darker tones) but they may not be looking to go full out contemporary either (minimalist elements with stark contrast) which is why the transitional style has become so popular. The transitional style is truly a marriage between traditional and contemporary. Transitional outdoor pieces are more streamlined, with smoother shapes and lighter, airy tones. The style also allows for a mixing of different elements and accents such as teak with aluminum or teak with synthetic wicker and then using the color and tone of the pieces to pull it all together. Cantilever Umbrellas ADDING A CANTILEVER UMBRELLA IS LIKE ADDING AN OUTDOOR ROOM
Five Benefits of a Cantilever Umbrella A cantilever umbrella has several benefits, including: 1. Flexible Coverage Since it rotates 360 degrees, a cantilever umbrella can work great in a situation where you have 2 or 3 adjacent areas that you wanted covered (as long as you do not want them covered all at the same time).

Cantilever [kan·ta·lee·ver] a projecting beam or member supported at only one end. A cantilever umbrella is an umbrella that is suspended in the air, supported from the side rather than the center, offering open, unobstructed shelter from the sun.
2. Maximum Shade Market umbrellas have an 11’ spread at max, whereas with a cantilever umbrella you can go up to 13’ in diameter. Also, since the pole is not in the middle of the umbrella it is able to give you full coverage when placed behind furniture such as large sectionals. Think about it: when the pole is in the middle and behind a piece of furniture you only get half of the umbrella coverage. 3. Wind Durability The cantilever has a much heavier base than market umbrellas so it is much sturdier in windier locations. Sometimes placement of the large cantilever base is a challenge, but there are options such as wheeled bases or anchoring directly into the ground which can help to alleviate that issue. Please Note: ALL umbrellas should be closed during extremely high wind events to prevent damage. 4. Ease of Use Cantilever umbrellas are easy to use, with a simple crank mechanism that opens and closes the canopy. Some models also have a tilt function that allows you to adjust the angle of the shade. 5. Conserving Water in the Garden
Typically, southeastern PA does not experience frequent drought, as you would find in California, but during the summer months, we often experience heat waves and periods of diminished rainfall. Summer Lawn Care Stimulate soil microbes with Jonathan Green products
H
ere are some key things to do to maintain your lawn’s health and keep your grass green all summer long. (Adapted from www.jonathangreen. com/blog/how-to-keep-lawn-green-in-summer.html) 1. Use organic lawn food in temperatures over 85° The optimal time to apply fertilizer for summer greening is between late May and early June, NEVER in temperatures higher than 85° and preferably to a dry lawn. Applying fertilizer when the air temperatures are too high can stress and burn your lawn, leaving it yellow and dull. If you’re lucky enough to not have a weed problem or if temperatures are above 85°F, opt for organic lawn food. 2. Test your soil pH Have you had trouble with your lawn year after year despite your best efforts? The problem may be your soil! Longer grass promotes longer root systems, giving water easier access to permeate for needed hydration during hot, summer days. 5. Water consistently During the summer you should aim to increase your watering schedule to four times a week, about ½ inch of water per day. This provides your lawn with roughly one to two inches of water per week, which is the perfect amount to encourage growth in times of heat and drought. Watering at the right time of day is also vital, as watering late in the evenings can make your lawn susceptible to lawn fungus. The best time to water your lawn is in the morning (the earlier, the better).
