Experience the Family Difference No other area company can compare to what Gasper has to offer

I

t all began in 1987 when delicatessen owner Robert Gasper and his wife Paula purchased their first home in Holland, PA. Their newly-constructed home needed

some “curb appeal,” and Bob began landscaping their property. Soon, through word of mouth, his deli customers, friends, and associates started asking Bob to landscape their own yards, and a new business idea was born. ▶

FAMILY TIES It’s hard to believe that more than 30 years have passed since Bob Gasper first started Gasper Landscape Design & Construction. Pictured from left to right are Bob Gasper, Paula, Robert, Dana, and newborn Lucy, held in her grandfather’s arm.

EXPERIENCE THE FAMILY DIFFERENCE

Then in 1994, with Gasper Landscape Design & Construction continuing to flourish and grow outside of Bucks County, the Gaspers decided to venture into the retail market and opened their first garden center, Gasper Home & Garden Showplace on Second Street Pike in Richboro, PA. By 2006, they began to outgrow the Second Street location and decided to relocate their growing businesses to the current Bucks County address off of Tanyard Road. There, a new greenhouse and landscape design center was built, complementing the existing historic farmhouse and barn on the 7-acre property. Parts of the structure of the original farmhouse can be traced back to the mid 1700’s, around the revolutionary war. During the years, Robert and Paula’s children, Dana and Bob were also growing and taking interest in the family business. Today, with Robert overseeing the entire Gasper organization, many of Robert and Paula’s immediate (and extended) family members, including their children, work

and lend their various expertise to the landscape and retail divisions of the company. The Gasper family, along with its approximate 130 employees, continues to support Robert’s original vision of delivering top notch customer service and quality, well-built landscapes. Robert, Paula, Dana, and Bob pride themselves in not only their love of their family business but their accomplishments in becoming an awardwinning and community-loved company. On behalf of the Gasper family and entire staff, we welcome you to discover the Gasper difference and see for yourself why we have earned the distinction of being Delaware Valley’s most exceptional landscape company and popular destination garden center. ■

OPPOSITE PAGE On the left side of the Tanyard Road entrance is Pond Park, a favorite spot for kids to watch the fish swim. The Gasper-built pergola is a landmark on the property and has served as a meeting spot and has hosted many holiday parties and Santa’s reading of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas during the holiday season.

hen homeowners, Michael and Dawn DiGiovacchino, were looking to host their son’s college graduation party,

they knew that their backyard required some serious renovations. Not only were they looking to update their concrete pool decking around the 12-year-old pool, but they also knew they wanted an outdoor fire feature, a pergola, and a spot for their custom hand-built Forno Classico wood-burning oven. ▶

apparent — based on the responsiveness of sales designer and project manager Bob Gasper — that they were dealing with a different level of professionalism. The existing living areas were disjointed, and there was a need for separation from the driveway. Working with a curvilinear design to complement the existing pool, Gasper landscape designer Nick Lupinacci went to work. By varying paver patterns and colors, Nick created a series of outdoor rooms that provided a better relationship with the pool. Given the existing elevation changes, multiple levels allowed for a smooth transition from the home to the pool. ▶

The level of quality didn’t stop at the design phase but continued with the installation of the project. The work ethic and attention to detail exhibited by Gasper’s foreman and crew made the DiGiovacchino’s so comfortable they went on vacation to Bora Bora — a trip that was scheduled prior to breaking ground on their backyard project. Even though the DiGiovacchinos were halfway around the world, Bob Gasper maintained communications, forwarded photos, which allowed the clients to be kept up-to-date. The finished project more than exceeded Michael and Dawn’s expectations. All renovations were completed in time for the summer swim season and the graduation party. Dawn found that the pergola patio is her favorite nook to sit in good weather, and Michael has been working hard to perfect his signature prosciutto, walnut, fig, gorgonzola cheese, and balsamic vinegar pizza. Che Buono! ■

Gasper’s design process was what gave us confidence. The design solution was much more creative than the other rudimentary designs we had received. We could tell that the Gasper designer had given it a personal touch.

ave you ever wondered why pizza tastes so much better when it comes from a wood-fired oven? It’s the temperature.

High temperatures are required to get the desired crisp but tender texture of a Neapolitan-style pizza. A wood-fired oven can reach temperatures above 900° F, something most indoor ovens can’t do. ▶

extra virgin olive oil

Directions 1. Mix the yeast with half the water in a small bowl, and stir to get a smooth liquid. Sift the flour and salt together into a large bowl. 2. Pour the yeast and water mixture on to the flour, then add the rest of the water and the olive oil. Use your hand or a wooden spoon to mix to a soft dough. 3. Transfer the dough onto a clean work surface. You don’t need to put any extra flour on it, as this would cause the dough to slide around. 4. Knead the dough vigorously for about 10 mins until smooth, shiny, and elastic. It is important to develop a really strong and stretchy dough that will then allow you to make good, thin bases. 5. Place the dough in a slightly oiled bowl and cover with a plastic bag or cloth. Leave in a warm place for about 60 minutes until roughly doubled in size. 6. Cut the dough in half and shape each section into a ball. At this stage you can put the balls in the refrigerator for making pizzas later. Chilling them stops the rising process. 7. Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough or shape by hand to produce rounds of 12” and about 31/8” thick. If you’re feeling confident, pass the pizza dough from hand to hand, turning it as you go to make the rounds. 8. The dough is now ready for toppings. Makes enough for 5–6 12”-diameter pizzas.

Outdoor ovens can also bake bread, roast veggies, broil fish or put a nice sear on that T-bone. Some companies, such as Fogazzo, offer wood-fired barbeque units for grilling Brazilian-style Churrasco or other roasted meats. Regardless of what you plan to cook, allow Gasper to help you incorporate an oven into your outdoor kitchen design. Whether it is simply adding a stone facade to surround a built-in unit or adding storage and a work surface adjacent to a standalone oven, we are here to help. Mike and Dawn DiGiovacchino wanted to incorporate their Forno Classico Oven into their outdoor living space. Gasper designed and installed countertops that provided valuable prep and serving areas for both the pizza oven and their traditional barbeque grill. Should you prefer to cook with natural gas or liquid propane, there are many gas-fired or hybrid outdoor ovens on the market today. Gas-fired ovens offer ease of use and can reach higher cooking temperatures more quickly. ■ Outdoor Living Perfected Volume One | www.gasper.net | 215-364-2400

Using a natural approach, homeowners discover a multi-level terraced patio was a better solution

F

aced with an old deteriorating deck, Anthony and Susan Falotico decided it was time to contact Gasper Landscape Design &

Construction. The project had been on hold for a few years due to their frustration with other design firms. The other patio designs they had received ended up “looking like a fortress” due to the number of steps between the house and the yard. ▶

Sales designer and registered landscape architect Mary Anna Okin had a different vision. Mary Anna worked hard to gain their trust and was finally able to convince them that a multi-level terraced patio was a better approach. Even after being presented with a 3-D model of the proposed design solution, it was hard for the homeowners to imagine that such a transformation was possible. “She was right about that,” recalls Susan. “The patio is such a pretty space now. There are a lot of cool little spots, and it feels private and tucked in.” Before the project, Susan and Anthony rarely used their backyard space, except when the family dog, Marley, needed a place to run. The new patio provides the family with many opportunities to enjoy the tranquility of their backyard. The unique irregular bluestone patio has two main areas, one for dining and one for lounging. ▶

out of scale. A fire pit built into one of the stone seat walls creates a great focal point on the lower-level patio. Gasper’s talented masons skillfully built the beautiful, hand-laid, stacked stone walls. Both chemical engineers, Anthony and Susan, are very detail orientated by nature and expected the same from Gasper. They recall being pleasantly surprised by the amount of thought put into Gasper’s design and proposal. “Every detail and every question we asked our sales designer was answered with ‘Yes, we thought of that,’ ‘Yes, we took care of that.’ There was tons of attention to detail,” remarked Susan. This thoroughness continued through the construction phase. ▶ Outdoor Living Perfected Volume One | www.gasper.net | 215-364-2400

Mary Anna was on site frequently throughout the construction process and was able to address all questions and concerns quickly, “The construction was pretty painless. Gasper already thought through 90% of our concerns before beginning construction. The remaining 10% was either addressed immediately or carefully explained why not,” remembers Susan. The homeowners were so comfortable with the entire Gasper team and the process they decided to expand their renovations to tackle the front walkway and plantings. The front walk mirrors the same materials used for the back patio, except the bluestone is laid in a random rectangular pattern. This pattern is a little bit more formal, reflecting the traditional architecture of the home but still has the natural look of real stone. ▶

Right enough to win her confidence and be awarded the contract. Lisa is a successful investor and an educated homeowner who takes the time to do her homework. Furthermore, she used the same philosophy to select her contractor that she uses to choose her investments: Be value-orientated and take the time to do the research on what you are buying. Lisa already had a vision of what she wanted to create in the backyard before she met with Gasper. She wanted elegance instead of the dated Italianatestyled backyard, which neither complemented the architecture of the house or her own personal style. Sales designer Jim Folz was confident that Gasper could deliver. Working closely with Landscape designer Nick Lupinacci, Lisa’s concept was transformed into an elegant, functional space that went beyond her expectations. Her only tweak was to make it bigger. ▶

The large Cambridge paver patio space features a free-standing pavilion which provided a shady area for both an outdoor kitchen and comfortable bar seating. The pavilion was built with similar materials as the house, but details such as a copper flower-shaped rain chain that empties into a large aquacolored pot, adds a feeling of charm and warmth. The stone on the piers of the seating and counter walls was carefully selected to match the existing stone on the house, and Gasper’s masons were able to lay the stone in the same pattern so that the house and landscape look as if they were built together. The patio is spacious enough to comfortably host large parties and family gatherings such as baby showers and holiday parties. Still, it has intimate spaces for Lisa to kick

Construction of the backyard proceeded smoothly. Communication between Jim, Lisa, and the site foreman were exceptional, and any small glitches were quickly resolved. In fact, Lisa was so happy with the backyard results that she turned her sights on addressing a shaky front step in need of repair and the entire front walkway. The new front walkway included a small bluestone and brick paver landing that created a courtyard-like feel adjacent to the front steps. The walkway itself has two legs, one from a small guest parking court near the garage and another longer leg that extends towards the street, welcoming visitors. The walkway’s subtle curving form is both inviting and elegant, and the natural bluestone paving compliments the natural stone on the front façade of the house. Lisa was pretty impressed with the front transformation, but so were her neighbors and perfect strangers who took the time to stop her and compliment the new walkway. ▶

Farmhouse Addition A traditional farmhouse maintains its old world charm after several renovations

O

ld Farmhouses tend to evolve and grow, with each generation contributing to the original shell of the house by adding their

own personal improvements or additions. The same is true of the 200-plus-year-old Bucks County farmhouse of John and Paulette Roberts. The original structure of the farmhouse can be traced back to the mid-1700s — around the time of the Revolutionary War. ▶

In 1813, as noted on the datestone near the farmhouse gable, the farmhouse

was enlarged to today’s proportions. Since that time, many projects have brought the home up to modern standards. Being previous clients and being impressed with the work performed when they had Gasper install a paver patio 15 years ago, John and Paulette Roberts decided to approach the Gasper team to design and install a new round of improvements to their beloved farmhouse. “I was happy to learn that Gasper had a full carpentry division to tackle my new addition,” remembers John. The project involved renovating and enlarging an existing three-season sunroom to make it usable year-round without losing all the natural light or the outdoor feel. However, to widen the building footprint, there needed to be some changes to the existing adjacent patio, including relocating a large, seldom-used hot tub. The design for the proposed sunroom bumped it out past the rear wall of the house approximately 8 feet creating an opportunity to place a new covered porch on the back of the house. The new patio was just wide enough to include chairs and a walkway. “The designer was able to marry the old and the new perfectly. You would never know that the new porch and sunroom is not part of the original farmhouse structure”,

The extension of the sunroom created the perfect area for a new covered porch. It is hard to image the back of this old farmhouse without it. Seasonal arrangements of mums, ornamental cabbages, and pumpkins surround the back door entrance. 62

praises homeowner Paulette. The new sunroom design was not without its challenges, however, such as dealing with an old basement Bilco door right in the vicinity of the new construction and the complexity of connecting the old roof lines into the new porch. Gasper designer Nick Lupinacci was able to bring creative and practical solutions to each challenge. A trap door, constructed out of Ipe (Brazilian

walnut), was built into the new porch floor to cover the Bilco door, and the 3-D model was used to help review and confirm the roof design as well as to show the homeowners precisely what to expect from the new construction. ▶ Outdoor Living Perfected Volume One | www.gasper.net | 215-364-2400

Practical details on the sunroom and porch, such as wrapping all exposed wood with weather and rot-resistant PVC, are balanced with whimsical details such as replacing the traditional downspouts with copper rain chains. “This is my new favorite room,” states Paulette. “I love to sit in this room and overlook the lushness of the yard. PROJECT FIVE | TRUE PERFECTION

For a few years, living in their house gave them time to figure out exactly how they used their outdoor space and what the issues were with their existing patio. It also gave them time to dream big on items like a built-in fire pit and an outdoor cooking station. Having spent time collecting many examples of outdoor spaces she admired, Stephanie shared her likes and dislikes with Gasper Sales Designer Erik Freeman during their initial meeting. So much so that when they met with Erik again for the conceptual design presentation, it was clear that not only were the designers at Gasper listening but that they had brought a lot more good ideas to the design process. The things that stuck out to Chris and Stephanie between Gasper and some of the other companies they had interviewed were the comfort level they had developed with the professionalism and preparedness of Erik and the level of thought and thoroughness that Gasper had put into the presentation of the proposed design. ▶ ABOVE Homeowners with pets are just as concerned with their pets comfort with the landscape design as they are. “Erik was exceptionally buttoned-up, and the presentation was outstanding,” remembers Stephanie. Both homeowners found the 3-D model that Gasper used to present the design extremely helpful in understanding exactly what the new proposed patio would look like. “I am very visual and like to see everything laid out in front of me,” commented Stephanie. “The other companies were only able to provide blueprints.” Reflecting on the process, Chris and Stephanie realize that it became a genuinely collaborative effort. With Erik giving good

feedback, showing them many material options, and suggesting improvements to their ideas. Gasper landscape designer, Nick Lupinacci, knew that many windows and doors along the back of the house would make for a strong connection between the interior and the new exterior space. He also knew that many doors and the elevation change would require many steps that could feel excessive if not appropriately handled. Creating more than just a transition down to the patio from the house, the design for the steps wrap the house’s base and feels more like overflow stadium seating, not to mention providing excellent locations for decorative planters that accent the patio and can be admired from inside the house. “If we had to do it over again, we wouldn’t change a thing.” One of the most challenging and time-consuming aspects of the project was steering the job through the permit process. Not having worked with the township before, Chris and Stephanie were unsure what to expect, so they were pleasantly surprised how Erik stayed on top of everything, making frequent calls to the township and regularly conveying to the homeowners where the project was in the approval process. Erik’s thoroughness and good communication continued through the whole construction process.

Yard Works

Transforming a simple, functional space into a multi-functional outdoor family room

W

hen Gasper sales designer and landscape architect Mary Anna Okin, first met with our homeowners, they had a pretty

good existing paver patio. True, it showed some signs of age, and true, they were always trying to find more shade, but it certainly was functional. Unfortunately, sometimes functional is just not good enough, and this patio did not work with how our homeowners wanted to live and entertain in their back yard. ▶

PROJECT SIX | YARD WORKS

Unfortunately, sometimes functional is just not good enough, and this patio did not work with how our homeowners wanted to live and entertain in their back yard. So when our homeowners started the Gasper design process, they had a laundry list of things they wanted to change about their outdoor space.

Sometimes, it is not about making the space bigger; it is about reorganizing to make the space work better for how the homeowner wants to use it. — MARY ANNA OKIN GASPER SALES DESIGNER & LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT

They were tired of constantly seeking shade and wanted a new covered living area. They wanted a hot tub but wanted to make sure it was fully integrated into the space, and they wanted an expanded counter space for grilling and food prep. Gasper designers started by addressing the need for cover with a new covered structure. Although umbrellas are great at providing shade, they provide little to no protection from the rain. The new L-shaped footprint of the roof allowed a larger gabled roof to protrude out from the house, avoiding upper windows while also forming a narrow covered ‘porch’ that provided a connection to the kitchen door and a spot for a small bistro seating set. Under the gabled roof is ample space for both a dining set and casual seating. The finished wood ceiling is warm and inviting and compliments the color of the composite deck flooring. The recessed lighting, ceiling fan, and exterior-rated television mounted from the ceiling make the perfect place to comfortably watch the game on a weeknight evening or host a fall football game with

lots of friends and family gathered around. “Since the roof is so perfectly integrated into the house, it is hard to even for me to remember that it is new construction,” laughs Okin. The new deck is built with Timbertech composite decking. Composite decking has a look and feel of traditional wood while being much more durable and lower in maintenance. Think no splinters and no staining. ▶

Having a deck instead of a patio meant that the deck floor could be flush with the finished floor of the house. The benefit of having no step out of the door means there is an excellent flow between the house’s interior rooms, and it also means it is easier for elderly or disabled guests to access the outside space. “There is no need to throw the baby out with the bathwater,” says Okin while recalling the decision to keep the existing trees and some of the other

The homeowners were emphatic that they wanted to keep their old grill, but they did acknowledge that additional counter and storage space would be helpful. is about reorganizing to make the space work better for how the homeowner wants to use it,” says Okin. This project is like a lot of projects that we see come through our doors here at Gasper Landscape Design & Construction and feels like a familiar dilemma to a lot of the homeowners we talk to:

› Patios/decks that previous homeowners might have designed.

› Patios/decks that have reached their lifespan and require renovation. › Patio/decks might have suited a family’s needs in the past but no longer fits the bill.

There is no need to live with a bad fit. Contact Gasper today to see how a Gasper design for your backyard can transform your outdoor space into a space you will love to use. ■ Outdoor Living Perfected Volume One | www.gasper.net | 215-364-2400

f you shudder every time you think about untangling your holiday lights or putting up your seasonal decorations, perhaps you should take a note from the

playbook of the owners of this 200+ year old Bucks county farmhouse. Last season they found the perfect way to deck the halls of their home and newly constructed Gasper-built sunroom without all the unwanted holiday stress, by taking full advantage of Gasper’s holiday decorating services. ▶

PROJECT SEVEN | HOME FOR CHRISTMAS

John and Paulette Roberts are no strangers to relying on Gasper’s for excellent service, as they have been loyal customers since they first contracted with Gasper Design & Construction over 15 years ago to install a paver patio in their back yard. More recently, they decided to approach the Gasper team to design and install a new round of improvements to their beloved farmhouse, this time a new sunroom and porch. “We have had two great experiences working with Gasper’s designers and crews. I would not trust anyone but Gasper to work on my house!” says John. Their newest project involved renovating and enlarging an existing threeseason sunroom to make it usable year-round without losing all the natural light or the outdoor feel. However, to enlarge the building footprint, there needed to be some changes to the existing adjacent patio, which included relocating a large hot tub that had been seldom used in recent years. The design for the proposed sunroom bumped it out past the rear wall of the house approximately 8 feet creating an opportunity to place a new covered porch SEASONAL ILLUMINATION Welcome holiday guests to your home with the warm light of decorative lanterns filled with candles and other ornamental baubles.

on the back of the house. The new patio was just wide enough to place chairs along the home and a walkway. “The designer was able to marry the old and the new perfectly. You would never know that the new porch and sunroom is not part of the original farmhouse structure,” praises homeowner Paulette. Upgrades to the sunroom interior included replacing the old exposed beams and painted plywood ceiling with a pre-finished wood ceiling (synergywood. com) and new energy-efficient windows and doors (trimlinewindows.com). Furniture made out of reclaimed barn wood, old-fashioned hanging Edison– style decorative bulbs, and wide-plank wood floors not only feel periodappropriate but are warm and inviting. ▶

Practical details on the sunroom and porch, such as wrapping all exposed wood with weather and rot-resistant PVC, are balanced with whimsical details, replacing the traditional downspouts with copper rain chains. “The new sunroom is now one of the most sought out rooms in the house,” states Paulette, “so of course, that is where we wanted the designer to place our tree.” The new sunroom design was not without its challenges, such as dealing with an old basement Bilco door right in the vicinity of the new construction and the complexity of connecting the old roof lines into the new porch. Still, Gasper Designer Nick Lupinacci brought creative and practical solutions to each challenge. A trap door, constructed out of Ipe, was built into the new

Building Trust

Building long lasting relationships with clients is sometimes more appealing than expected

T

he end game for us here at Gasper is not only to build our client’s landscapes to withstand the test of time but also to gain

their trust and build long-lasting relationships. This summer, we were granted the opportunity to check back in with previous homeowners whom we had worked with almost 15 years ago and who now were looking to add some screening plantings to their yard. ▶

OPPOSITE PAGE This patio, built with classic materials such as bluestone and clay brick, is comprised of three distinct ‘rooms’ or outdoor living areas: one for dining, one for comfortable seating, and another for casual seating around a fire pit.

ABOVE The fire pit patio is all brick, laid in a herringbone pattern. The new screening plantings are visible in the distance and compliment the mature plantings of ornamental grasses and boxwood that nestle the patio.

We first met Chris and Maria Costello in 2003 through a neighbor’s referral when they were looking to build a new patio. They knew that they did not want the typical cookie-cutter design and instead wanted a patio built of materials that looked like it had always been there. At the time of construction, they were ecstatic with the bluestone and real clay brick patio, which Maria had described as “Timeless.” But as the years passed and neighbors who went with other companies had problems within a few years, Gasper’s attention to quality and craftsmanship became even more apparent. In fact, after minor repairs

and maintenance to the patio this summer, such as power washing and new polymer sand, our homeowners declared, “It looks like it is brand new.” We are also proud to report that both Chris and Maria were happy with the new plantings. So were their neighbors who, to their relief, thought the plantings looked great from their side of the yard, too. To say the least, it was very gratifying to revisit this former project and see just how well it faired over

PATIO REVISITED Back in 2003, this project was one of our earliest photoshoots. A strong design can allow the homeowner flexibility in its use. As an example in 2003, on the middle patio, there was only just a simple bench. Today, it has been transformed into a much more comfortable space with deep seating for entertaining guests or just hanging out together.

hen Kelly and Steve Molitor moved into their house in 1999, the house had an existing pool and paver patio.

Luckily for Gasper, Kelly had just received one of the Gasper catalogs in the mail. After flipping through the pages of photos of other Gasper-built projects, she mentioned to her husband, Steve, that they should give Gasper a call. Soon after, Kelly and Steve met with sales designer Bob Gasper at their home to discuss their ideas for the backyard. “Bob was very professional and an easy guy to work with,” recalls Kelly. “We liked his straightforwardness and how he addressed any issues head-on.” Along with landscape designer Nick Lupinacci, Bob developed a new plan for the backyard to extend Kelly and Steve’s living space and give everything a fresh new face. ▶

Around the existing pool, the Gasper design team started by proposing to relocate the existing pool fence to the outer edges of the yard to remove the visual barrier between the pool, the house, and the patio. Next, they redesigned the walkway to the pool to have an elegant curve and graceful steps that provided a better entrance to the pool area. Lastly, a complimentary semi-circular, masonry, stone seat wall picks up the shape of the hot tub and provides additional seating space. The Gasper design team also proposed new lighter-colored materials for around the pool decking and continued the same materials on the patio. The new patio was enlarged to extend past the existing attached roof structure on the house. In addition to comfortable seating under the pavilion, there was an area for a large dining table, stone cook station, and two new fire pit patios. “Gasper thought of things we did not even know we wanted. The design wowed us, but the computer 3-D modeling was also a big selling point”, remembers Kelly, “because it allowed us to see exactly what the Gasper design team was proposing. We really loved how they designed the new walkway to the pool and the elegance of the new hot tub wall.” Kelly and Steve elected for a paid design from Gasper, which allowed them to get multiple bids from other companies before ultimately deciding to move forward with Gasper’s proposal for the construction. According to Kelly, Gasper’s proposal was upfront and comprehensive as well as competitive. “We were confident that Gasper would do a good job because they had all the bases covered and all the skill sets needed. And in the end, everyone who worked on our project was a quality worker: the surveyors, the designers, the craftsmen— EVERYONE,” Kelly emphasizes. ▶ OPPOSITE PAGE Irregular bluestone paving stones set in the lawn create an informal seating area away from the main patio area. The pavillion offers a view of the nearby pool so the couple can keep an eye on the kids as they enjoy a night swim.

They entertained a lot and needed more areas for their daughter, Samantha, and their friends’ kids to hang out. They wanted more shade to keep out of the sun. There was an old hot tub that was never used and just taking up space, so they were pretty sure it should go. They were not sure of exactly how to pull all of those elements together into one comprehensive plan. This is where Gasper came in. Julie and David had previously worked with another landscape company, and they were actively bidding the project out to multiple companies, including Gasper. They liked what Gasper was showing them. Julie remembers David thinking that the Gasper design ideas were just fresher and that the Gasper proposal was competitive and fair. “The biggest reason we went with Gasper was that Gasper could do all the work in-house. ▶ 146

The other companies had to sub-contract out the work to others, so it made sense to go with someone who could do it all, put it all together and manage their time well. I wanted to be able to yell at one person and one person only if anything went wrong,” laughs Julie. As an aside, she adds, “Mary Anna was so good to work with, we did not have to yell about anything.” For Julie and David, the construction process was very smooth, and because Mary Anna made the permit process easy, so permits were processed quickly, and Gasper was able to start the project sooner than expected. “It was a pleasure having them work at the house. The crews were friendly and worked great with my dogs. They explained things when I had questions, and every day everything was picked up and put away. I enjoyed having them work on the property,” recollects Julie. Mary Anna was also on-site throughout the construction process, ensuring that Julie or David had quickly addressed or

communicated any questions or concerns. “I never had to ask, ‘When are you coming back?’” Julie confirms. The Gasper design team decided to keep the upper deck in the same general layout as the existing deck but upgraded the old wood decking to a composite material (Timbertech Legacy decking, color: mocha) to eliminate future maintenance. They also looked at the deck stair locations and added another set of stairs to better flow between the deck, the lower patio, and the new pavilion area. A lower level deck that had previously housed the hot tub was removed and replaced with a new, dry-laid travertine patio. Travertine is a desirable natural material for a patio or around a pool because it is perfect for bare feet. It does not get too hot to walk on, and it is not slippery when wet, which is surprising because it is so smooth to the touch. The hot tub area

became a new stone cook station. “The grill is fantastic, but the outdoor fridge has turned out to be very practical. We keep the kid’s drinks in the fridge, and it keeps them from having to traipse through the house,” confides Julie. The existing stamped concrete pool decking was still in good shape, and removing it would affect the automatic pool cover, so Gasper’s design proposed keeping it. The cook station and dining patio transition down to the existing pool deck via a large set of decorative block steps. ▶

California Dreaming Gasper designers found a way to fit everything perfectly

C

oastal communities are known for their outdoor living. When our homeowner, Kelly Stapleton, who had grown up in Southern

California, purchased a modest property in Pennsylvania to be close to extended family, she knew that having an outdoor living space that recreated a California/Nantucket style was critical to her. ▶

RIGHT A slim, bar-height, granite counter under the kitchen window allows swimmers a place to sit and eat in-between time in the pool. OPPOSITE PAGE The pool house design included a series of three windows to allow food and drinks to be passed quickly from the interior kitchenette to the pool area. It also helps to keep wet floors (from swimmers) to a minimum.

As she turned her attention to renovating the existing yard, she wanted a comprehensive design that made sense — where she could eat out and grill during the summer, and she wanted a swimming pool. Being from California, Kelly realized that she had never been without a swimming pool, and she missed it. Unfortunately, she was in a similar situation that many homeowners find themselves in. Her property had a small allowable building envelope, limited impervious coverage (impervious refers to paved surfaces that do not let water pass through). The property also had various site restrictions, such as existing utility lines and a large seepage pit that made it a real challenge to design the new swimming pool and pool house that she was hoping to build. ▶ 166

Kelly and her husband, Jim Conlan, had spent almost a year working with builders and architects to figure out how to make it all fit, but the experience became futile. Jim started to feel that they should move to a larger property. However, Kelly was adamant that she did not want to move. Luckily, when

she felt particularly frustrated, Kelly received a Gasper catalog in the mail and decided to call. Gasper Sales Designer Erik Freeman met with Kelly and Jim on-site to discuss their vision for their property. Erik was up to the design challenge but knew it wasn’t going to be easy. The steeply sloping backyard was going to require substantial retaining walls and careful attention to grading. In addition, the buildable space where the design elements could be situated was extremely tight. Working with landscape architect Christina Reeves, Erik presented a concept drawing within a few weeks. In addition, Gasper created a 3-D model of the proposed project to help Kelly and Jim envision precisely how the backyard would look. “I was blown away by Gasper’s presentation,” remembers Kelly, and they decided to move forward with the project. ▶

More families are creating an impressive outdoor setting for significant family events.

T

With Gasper’s design and construction services, you can create spectacular outdoor spaces to host out-of-this-world events that friends and family will genuinely never forget.

Weddings More and more couples decide to host their wedding in a backyard for a more unique and intimate feeling. But just because it is in the backyard does not mean it can’t be as fabulous as an indoor wedding venue! Take Peter and Angela Yianilos, for example. When their son Jonathan and fiancé Emily announced their engagement, they decided to build a space in their backyard to host the wedding. The space needed to be dual functional, able to be used for events yet still appropriate for everyday use. Gasper’s design included a custom outdoor pavilion which most days protect a dining table with shade. On the wedding day, the bride and groom used the pavilion to take their vows, then by the string trio to provide music during the reception, and lastly as a dramatic setting for the couple’s first dance. The lower bluestone patio became the dance floor and the upper patio, which featured a linear gas fire pit, became the cocktail tent. Gasper also designed the space to house two large tents.

Birthday Parties Whether you’re hosting your child’s birthday party or a particular “decades” party, the event will be much more exciting in a backyard space specially designed for entertainment. From the fire pit roasting marshmallows, fun lawn games to a new or upgraded pool space, there will be no need to hire entertainment to keep the kids busy. ▶

Graduation Parties When it comes to backyard graduation parties, you want to have an area where you can not only accommodate a large party but a space that will keep your guests thoroughly entertained. Your children and their friends can play in the yard or swim while not being on top of other guests. Nearby, in your outdoor kitchen and pavilion, you can prepare and set out a spread of food in a luxurious, covered space. Thanks to strategic placement, you can grill while still socializing with all your guests. Building a magnificent space that includes many of these inspiring design ideas requires finding a landscape designer that is up to the task and experienced with handling larger-scale projects with a lot of detail. With Gasper, you can feel confident that your space will come together in a way that will make your backyard events extraordinary. The bottom line? Think ahead. Projects that involve a lot of construction will need time to be designed, permitted, and constructed. Start planning for next year’s events now. The office staff set Lesley and Keith up with an appointment at their home with sales designer John Schweizer. “John came out pretty quickly after I made the first contact. We sat down, went over the budget, what we were expecting to spend, and the general view of what our vision was going to be for the patio. John was great about asking very specific questions such as: what we wanted to use the space for, how large our table would be in the dining area, how many people we foresaw in the area, etc. He thought through the process and listened to us. As a result, we were just blown away with what Gasper was able to offer,” Lesley remembers. One of the things they liked most about working with Gasper was the 3-D

model. “We were a little bit nervous at first because we are both very visual people,” confessed Lesley, “but the model allowed us to see what the patio would look like finished, with all the colors, patterns, and stone materials we selected.” Keith adds, “The process was very clear and efficient. We did not feel pressured. There was the right level of service and follow-up gave. He gave us time to think things over.” ▶

LEFT Add depth and drama to your Gasper-built structure with a darkstained ceiling by Synergy Wood Products. The pavilion ceiling, shown here in Bordeaux, is natural wood, pre-finished with stain, and completely sealed so that your ceiling will always look as good as the day it was installed. NEXT PAGE The use of contrasting borders and different materials such as irregular bluestone help to visually divide this large paver patio into distinct outdoor ‘rooms’ for dining, gathering around a fire pit, or simply lounging. Lesley and Keith knew that they wanted to use irregular bluestone because they liked the natural stone look, and there were many blues and grays inside the house. They were very appreciative of John’s help in selecting other

materials to complement the bluestone, such as the concrete pavers and the wall stone. The paving design used irregular bluestone as an outdoor ‘rug’ underneath the dining table in the pavilion and as the cap material on the walls and cook station. The balance of the patio is Cambridge’s concrete Ledgestone XL pavers, whose tan and gray coloring perfectly complement the tan and grays in the bluestone. The large patio is divided into four separate areas: the cook station, the dining pavilion, the fire pit area, and a smaller seating area. Each area feels like a distinct outdoor room and makes the patio feel intimate and cozy. The patio also bridged the gap between the house and their son, Tyler’s play set area so that the whole family can be outside together. But, of course, their favorite area is the fire pit. “We have taken a liking to the fire pit. We come out there a lot. Just sit outside with a glass of wine, make some s’mores, hang out, have friends over, put on some music, and it just becomes a little party.” Lesley laughs, adding, “And because it is so well lit, we can use it late into the evening. We even use it throughout the winter. Sometimes we just come out and sit on the

fire pit wall, don’t bother dragging out the cushions. We just chill out, Tyler runs around, and we have a great time.” It is also important to note that the entire project was built in phases. The patio was built in phase one. The pavilion was added during the second phase. Having the whole area planned ahead of time ensured that the finished project all looked compatible and worked together seamlessly. ▶

LAUGH OUT LOUD S’mores for the kids and wine for the adults means everyone will enjoy gathering around a fire in your yard. It is probably also why fire pits are one of the top requested things people ask us to design for their yards. Wood-burning, gas-burning, masonry, moveable — there are so many ways for us to accommodate your space and your budget.

“Six years ago, there was no patio. We never used the space. There was no reason to use the space. So we never came out here.” says Keith. “Now we have such a beautiful aesthetic in our yard that we can use. Our families and friends have a great time on the patio, and we have built great memories,” adds

Lesley. “When you do something, you want to do it right. So we ultimately spent the time and found the right partner with Gasper, and it turned out great,” said Keith. Hopefully, you can see now why we call this featured project a Field of Dreams. So, what plans have you been dreaming of? Let Gasper build it for you, then see what comes. ■

EVERYTHING BUT THE KITCHEN SINK Gone are the days where an outdoor kitchen would consist of just a grill. Homeowners with big spaces are now developing larger outdoor kitchens and placing more components in them. An outdoor kitchen can be a simple setup with a gas grill, mini-fridge, counter space, and a sink area. The Glenfield’s opted to feature a pizza oven in their outdoor kitchen.

COMFORT ZONE Adding a cantilevered umbrella is almost like adding an outdoor room. A cantilever umbrella is designed with a stable offset base that allows you to make efficient use of the space you have, keeping the pole out of the way and allowing you to shade a large area with an unobstructed view. The Glenfield family created an outdoor living room with a cantilevered umbrella.

So I turned to Gasper again when I wanted a matching wall, a trellis and patio feature, and landscaping for my son’s and daughter-in-law’s backyard wedding celebration. The experience was an A+ from the first contact to the finished project. Gasper is not only excellent at professional landscape design and execution, they are top notch to do business with. They communicate well, keep appointments on time, work with your budget, are flexible with changes, have skilled and talented crew members, and leave the property looking fabulous.
