Enjoy Fall at Gasper When you ask most people who live in a climate such as ours (that experience seasonal changes) what their favorite season is, I bet you that most will say spring or fall. I know this because when you run a garden center, you become keenly aware of how the seasons (and the weather) affect your customers. On those first warm spring days after the dreariness of winter, we experience a rush of people with spring fever. In the fall, as the weather starts to cool off after the hot summer months, we encounter another surge of activity. And it’s easy to see why — as the milder temperatures in the fall make it the perfect time to start spending more time outside, working in our yards, and doing more fun outdoor activities. At the Home & Garden Showplace, we can help you on all of these fronts. First of all, fall is the perfect time for planting. We don’t just mean colorful mums and ornamental cabbages and kale (which our greenhouse is brimming with), but also that it is the absolute best time of year for planting grass seed AND for planting trees and shrubs — see why on page 11. Also, don’t forget to plant flowering bulbs this fall for incredible spring displays. Plus, here is a little nursery secret: We always have great SALE prices on selected nursery stock in the fall. Everyone loves to see the beautiful changing colors of the leaves in the fall. Probably less of us like cleaning up those leaves once they are on the ground, but we can help there, too, with all of the garden tools and supplies you need to make fall clean-ups easier, such as better rakes, leaf scoops, and yard bags. We can also help with fun family outdoor activities. The first four Saturdays in October, we transform the lower half of the nursery into our fall activity center, where we offer pumpkin painting and scarecrow making (for a small cover charge). I invite you to vote for your favorite scarecrow during our second annual employee scarecrow contest. Our employees showed their creative (and competitive) sides last year, and I loved seeing everyone’s scarecrows sprinkled throughout the nursery. Lastly, fall is when we start the hard work of transforming the garden center into our holiday wonderland! Don’t worry; we still carry all the fun fall décor for Halloween and Thanksgiving, but it takes a long time to go all out for the holidays Gasper-style, so we start decorating trees early. Whatever your favorite season is, I know you will always find ways to enjoy it better at Gasper!

Fall is Perfect for Planting
ontrary to what you might think, fall is one of the best times of year to plant trees and shrubs. In the fall, most plants are preparing for winter dormancy. The most obvious sign of this is when deciduous plants lose their leaves. When plants are transplanted in their dormant phase, they are less likely to experience transplant shock. The generally cooler fall temperatures and increased rainfall mean that newly transplanted plants are less stressed and easier to care for. In addition, just because the plant is dormant above ground does not mean that the plant is dormant below ground; it will continue to send out roots into its new home. Fall root growth means that plants installed in the fall have a big head start over plants installed in the spring because
they have more of an established root base going into the hot summer months. It is considered safe to plant most trees, shrubs, and perennials up to six weeks before the ground freezes, which most years in our area mean you can plant into November. Care should be taken when planting evergreens late in the fall, as some winter injuries can occur. With all newly planted evergreens, including those planted in the spring and summer, we recommend using an anti-desiccant spray such as Wilt-pruf to help prevent winter moisture loss through the needles or leaves. I am so glad you asked this question, Michael! The fire table is truly a piece of furniture that adds the ambiance and warmth of a fire to any outdoor seating arrangement. Being a gas appliance, it is much more convenient and safer than a wood-burning fire pit. With a gas fire table, there is no need for wood. This makes it fast and easy to quickly get a fire started, making it infinitely more useable daily. And with no wood, there is no need to worry about sparking embers burning holes in your good upholstery, or having to rearrange your seats to avoid the smoke. One downside of a fire table flame is that you really should not use them for cooking — so no s’mores as the molten marshmallow can end up clogging the gas components of your table. But with a fire table, you get a lot of additional space around the fire to put down a plate or a glass. So you can eat around it, just don’t cook on it. In addition, most fire tables have lids so that the entire table surface is available when the fire portion is not in use. When you are thinking fire tables, you are not limited to short, round pieces. Fire tables come in so many configurations, heights, and sizes. They also come in many different materials and finishes.

Fall Lawn Care & Winter Survival
Make sure your grass stays healthy through the winter months

ave you thought about your fall lawn fertilization yet? Fertilizing in the fall is a critical part of lawn renovation and enables the lawn to survive through the winter. The best time to apply a fall fertilizer is October into early November. As the days get cooler, the grass will start storing the nutrients the fertilizer provides. The benefits of fertilizing your lawn in the fall include increased and deeper root growth, a richer, darker-green color into late fall, a pleasant tan (instead of white grass leaves) in the dead of winter, an earlier spring green-up in the spring and much less disease and drought issues next year.
