Cherishing the Past This year Northampton Township, where Gasper Home & Garden Showplace is located, is celebrating its 300th anniversary!

I love old houses, and one of the things that drew me to the Tanyard Road location where we moved the garden center in 2006 was the historic farmhouse on the property. The oldest section of the house was built just after the formation of the township (the mid-1700s) and before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. For me, being in an area so steeped in the history of the birth of our nation is brought to life by being able to see reminders of those early people in the historical architecture that is sprinkled throughout our township. The place you call home — if you are lucky — is more than just the place you live; it is also about the sense of community that its residents create. Paula and I have been lucky to have been an active part of the vibrant community of Northampton for the past 30-plus years th (or, if you will, of the township’s lifespan), and we hope to continue to contribute to our community for the foreseeable future. We have raised our children here, and now some of our grandchildren, and we have grown our businesses here as well, just as the early settlers and indigenous peoples of Northampton raised and supported their families. Last year Paula was elected to the Northampton Board of Supervisors and is so honored to be given the opportunity to serve all the people of Northampton for the next few years. A fellow resident came up with the slogan for the 300th anniversary: Cherishing the Past, Celebrating the Present, Welcoming the Future. It is an excellent reminder for all of us to remember where we came from, enjoy our lives in the moment, and look forward to the times to come. I urge you to look for ways to become part of a community, whether it is a community based on where you live, your beliefs, or one that is based on something you like to do, like gardening. We always love when people join our Gasper community. I hope and dream that the Gasper community Paula and I have built will be a part of the greater Northampton community for generations to come.

Tree form varieties that we carry are
hile most trees put on their floral display in springtime, some trees bloom in the summer months, and the most popular is the crape myrtle. Usually associated with more southern states, there are a few crape myrtle varieties that are winter hardy in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Tree form crape myrtles are usually multistemmed and grow to be small trees, typically 15–20 feet tall in our area. In addition to a long season of flowers during the summer months, crape myrtles have good fall foliage color. Some varieties like ‘Natchez’ have colorful exfoliating bark that can look almost sculptural in the winter.

A
hen I’m working with customers on selecting cushion colors, I W always recommend they go with neutral colors such as greys and beiges and then work with other accessories such as colorful accent pillows to add the pops of style and personality to the arrangement. I do this for a couple of reasons. The first is I know that neutral colors are easy to match. They go with everything, and it gives my clients a wider range of accent fabrics and colors to choose from. The second reason is that inevitably after a few years, people often want to change up their furniture look. The easiest and most cost-effective way to give your outdoor space a new look is to change the pillows rather than reupholster the cushions, which can be very costly.
Pillows
The look and quality of outdoor pillows have gotten so good in recent years. One of our brands that I love to design with is Elaine Smith pillows. Elaine Smith is a line of luxurious indoor/outdoor pillows that resist rain, sun, and stains. They are often described as ‘runway-inspired’ because they are so unique, combining exciting patterns, colors, and textures, like one of my favorite Elaine Smith pillows we are carrying this year that is banded with knotted ropes.
