In the past 12 months, Paula and I were blessed to welcome not one but two new grandchildren into our growing family, and I have truly cherished taking on my greatest role yet, that of ‘Grand-Bob,’ which is what my eldest granddaughter, Lucy, has taken to calling me. We have been equally blessed that our Gasper family business has also continued to grow. In 1994, we opened our first garden center. It was located on Second Street Pike in Richboro, and it was very well received by the community. But if you know me, you know I am never satisfied with the status quo — I am always working hard to not only grow our business but to keep improving the Gasper Garden Center experience for our visitors. So in 2006, we moved the Garden Center to our current, larger, Tanyard Road location in Richboro and built the Landscape Design Center. But again, we didn’t stop there. Almost every single year since we have opened, we have tackled a new project (or two) to ensure that we continue to be able to offer more and more products and services to our customers. I dare say that there has not been a single year that we have not made some improvement: The Exterior Furnishing Gallery in 2012, the Pond & Fountain Department in 2013, Bucks County Hardscape & Building Supply in 2014, Santa’s workshop in 2019, and outdoor registers in 2021, just to name a few. That brings me to our latest venture, opening our newest store, The Exterior Furnishings Studio @ Furlong. This new Gasper location triples our furniture display floor space and allows us to bring you the largest selection of the finest quality exterior furniture available in the tri-state area. In addition to casual furniture, the Gasper Exterior Furnishings Studio @ Furlong will offer a curated selection of luxury home and garden décor and accessories, including frost-resistant pottery and cast stone statuary and fountains. I am so excited for you to visit us at our new location since we have worked so hard to create the best outdoor living shopping experience around, and I think you will love what you find!

ou planted your annuals in the early morning or early evening — as we discussed in our Spring edition — and you planted them in soil mixed with a nice blend of organic soil builder and fertilizer. After that you watered them in with a gentle spray of water, and continued watering them daily until they were nicely established. Now for the next stage in their growth. Flowering plants have a special need for phosphorus and potassium to realize their blooming potential. To keep them steadily growing and blooming throughout the summer you should remember to keep feeding
them — Dr. Earth Bud & Bloom Fertilizer or Dr. Earth Life Fertilizer will work well for this. Watering regularly and deadheading blooms when needed will also help your plants look good and keep blooming all season long. Deadheading (right) is just simply cutting off or pinching off the flower stem just below the spent flower blossom before the plant begins seed formation.

Herbs and flowers to deter pests in your vegetable garden
A
more organic and chemical-free way to deter pests from your vegetable garden is to use companion plants. Many annual flowers and herbs have scents that will help with those pesky little critters that like to munch on your plants and you. Basil Mosquitos, moths, and flies do not like the smell of basil. Crush a few leaves and rub on your skin when working in the garden can help deter the mosquitos from bugging you! Chives Are great to pair with your tomatoes, as well as carrots and roses. They help deter Japanese beetles, and help prevent black spot on your roses. Geraniums Repel leafhoppers and other types of insects. Lavender Repels mosquitos, fleas, flies and moths. Lemongrass Repels mosquitos, which makes working in the garden much nicer. Marigolds Are great for repelling aphids and mosquitos. Also works for small animals like rabbits. Why are fragrant perennials important?
W

Yellow jackets, wasps and honeybees: What’s the difference?
W
hile everyone calls wasps and yellow jackets ‘bees’ this is only giving the poor honeybee and bumblebees a bad rap. Honeybees are naturally non-aggressive and only attack when provoked. They are only capable of stinging once, and then they die. They are happy to fly from flower to flower seeking out only pollen and nectar. Wasps and yellow jackets are more aggressive predators; a single wasp is capable of stinging multiple times. It is the wasps and yellow jackets that are landing on your food and drinks at your picnics and outdoor events — not the honeybees! Adult yellow jackets and wasps subsist on sources of sugars and will raid and dart in to places to grab their share of whatever is available. This raiding maneuverability is reflected in their fighter-jet shaped bodies, while the honeybee, in contrast with its fuzzcovered rounded bodies are not capable of this type

Here are just a few fun facts: I n order to produce 2 lbs. of honey, about 4 million flowers must be visited. he term chaise lounge comes from the French words for a ‘long chair’, chaise longue (shez – lawng). oe and Julia S. built their family home in 1985 and raised five children there. Like many parents with young children, their back yard became a place for their children to play. First, there were playsets, then soccer and basketball nets. Soon an above-ground pool became an in-ground pool. Fast forward 20+ years. The kids are grown up and out of the house, some with children of their own; Joe and Julia have become empty-nesters and need to decide whether or not to renovate the house or move. *Spoiler alert: they decided to stay -- but with a few caveats.
One caveat was that they wanted to transform the backyard from a ‘playground’ into a more sophisticated ‘adult’ space that could accommodate both grandchildren and grown children alike. Plus, in the 20 years since they installed the existing in-ground pool, it had become dated and desperately needed repairs. N OPEN AIR PERGOLA creates the feeling of an outdoor room while providing light shade. It is the perfect design element to break up the large patio and give a sense of intimacy to the dining area. In addition the pergola frames the view to the pool and the existing brick Pool House (by other) from the house and table.
The Family Backyard VERSION 2.0 Landscape sales designer Bob Gasper met with Joe and Julia, and they immediately felt they were in the right hands. “I found Bob Gasper to be very down to earth. Bob was interested in finding out what would work for us,” shared Julia. “He showed up looking very professional — but like he was ready to get his hands dirty,” added Joe. Bob and the Gasper design team later returned to them with a new vision for their backyard space, complete with a 3-D model that allowed them to ‘see’ exactly what Gasper proposed. “I was happy with all the choices Gasper presented,” said Julia of the new design. The plan included a complete renovation of the existing concrete pool decking, a masonry cooking station, a dining area under a pergola, and a gathering area around a large gas fire pit. The cook station was an essential addition to the backyard because, as Joe describes it, “food is our life.” You only have to venture inside to see his 800-plus cookbook collection to agree. “All of our kids like to cook, and we like to have food competitions in our

family. The outside cook station is sure to bring new competitions,” explained Joe. The new cooking station features a professional-style grill and power burner plus an outdoor oven, all by Lynx. “The pizza oven is a new thing for us … It’s going to up our game,” states Joe, somewhat competitively. Julia agreed and added, “Everyone congregates wherever we are cooking, so having the cooking station gives us more room to do that outside.” “Plus,” Joe adds, “There is always something special about cooking outdoors. It always adds another dimension to the meal.” “This project wasn’t just about Julia and me alone; it was about our family,” smiles Joe, “We are thrilled with the end product. Polysand One of the biggest timesavers for owners of paver patio and walkways is the application of polymeric sand or ‘polysand’ in the paver joints. Unlike traditional sand, polysand has integrated polymers which cause the joint sand to harden and bind together. This not only holds the joint sand in place, but significantly reduces weeds and ants from nesting in the joints. HOSE BIB IRRIGATION

Hose Bib Drip Irrigation System
H
and watering is one of the most timeconsuming aspects of garden maintenance. Instead, save time and money with a simple hose bib drip irrigation system that you can install yourself.
Why use Drip Irrigation? Drip irrigation is a very efficient method of watering. It saves water because it applies water directly to the root zone around each plant, eliminates overspray, and reduces evaporation. Drip irrigation also keeps water off of the plant’s foliage, which can contribute to fungal diseases and leaves being ‘burned’ by water droplets acting as magnifying glasses. Unlike soaker hoses, the ½-inch poly tubing used in simple drip irrigation systems are clog-resistant and can water evenly at distances up to 300 feet. Also, you can install a drip irrigation system without digging. Tubing is laid directly on the topsoil under the layer of mulch.

Timing Components
Connected to the Y-SPLITTER is the timer. The TIMER acts as a shutoff valve and regulates at what time and for how long the system will run. Because the timer controls the flow of water, the hose bib will need to remain open while the irrigation system is running. The timers are the only part of the simple hose bib drip irrigation system that cannot stay outside in freezing temperatures because the timer will be damaged. Attached to the timer is the PRESSURE REGULATOR. The pressure regulators contain a backflow preventer that prevents any water from the irrigation system backing up into the house water supply. It also ensures full and even flows throughout the poly tubing. Teflon thread seal tape can be used on the connection threads to ensure a tight fit that does not leak. The pressure regulator can remain outdoors in the winter.
