A lot can change in just a few months
I can sincerely say that by the time this publication reaches you in your home, I hope that we are all well on our way to a full recovery from the pandemic. We here at Gasper have been more fortunate than most during the last few months. We were able to keep ourselves and our employees safe and employed. Our companies were able to stay open by quickly adapting to a completely new way to do business such as online remote landscape presentations and curbside pick-up. There are even a few things that we are happy to embrace as the ‘new normal’, like our online shopping services and social distancing guidelines. Another upside of the stay at home orders has been to give us all more time at home with our families, not to mention more time in our gardens. In fact, I dare say we are in the midst of a gardening boom, akin to the victory gardens planted in the 1940s. It has also given many of us the time to tackle some of the long put off home improvement projects that we never seemed to have time for before. Of course, this is something that we at Gasper excel at — giving people the tools they need to create amazing outdoor spaces. Spaces that make the thought of being stuck at home a restorative rather than a punitive experience. In this edition, we are featuring many of the outdoor fireplaces we have built over the years. (pages 11–15) I love fireplaces, in fact, my Bucks County farmhouse has four! Having a place in your yard to gather around a fire, whether it be a fireplace or fire pit (see page 39), continues to be one of the design elements that bring our homeowners the highest satisfaction. I don’t have a crystal ball, but moving forward it is probably safe to say that we will be eating out less and entertaining in smaller, more intimate gatherings. We will probably be opting for staycations, rather than vacations. Therefore, creating an outdoor space that you truly enjoy will become more important than ever. Let my team here at Gasper help. I
T WAS A ‘SHOULD I STAY OR GO’
decision for our homeowners, Stephen and Diana K. Of their three children, one was in college, and the other two were preparing to move out of the family home. The couple was contemplating reinvesting in their family home to make it their forever home — as many emptynesters do — or look to live elsewhere. When they decided to stay, they knew they needed to make some upgrades and repairs to the yard. The first project required removing their old, unattractive and structurally compromised wood deck and replace it with a bigger composite deck. They also knew they wanted to add patios off the deck and outside of the basement entrance

along with creating an area in the yard for a fire pit. When Stephen and Diana first met with Gasper Sales Designer Erik Freeman, they knew they had found someone they could trust. Erik would act as a trusted, experienced partner in the design process, helping make them comfortable with their decisions. “The initial design Erik presented to us was about 70 percent there, but then the design became what we wanted. It evolved.” Stephen recalled. “We asked a lot of questions of both Erik and ourselves. Questions like: How do you live with it? Am I going to use it? Is this something I want to pay for?” They felt Erik was helpful in informing their early decisions and worked hard to help them refine the design.
The 3-D model allowed the couple to visualize their project during the design process. For example, it helped Diana see that she didn’t want nine steps off the deck, so a decision was made to make a landing at the back door to reduce the height of the deck. “The model was very compelling to get to a ‘go’ decision,” said Stephen. Stephen can’t get over the improvement over the old deck. “My goodness — is it solid!” He jokes that they can now have a 50-person dance party without worry. The new, larger-sized deck is more practical and opens up the house. In addition, the composite decking reduces the amount of maintenance needed by eliminating the need to seal or stain the wood.

The dry-laid bluestone patio off the deck creates a comfortable and beautiful conversation space. Since it’s a little further out in the backyard, it gets more sun than the deck which is on the northern (shady) side of the house. A graceful, curved-stone seat wall helps to distinguish the patio area and offers the added advantage of acting as a retaining wall to the couples’ sloping yard. Moving from the dining and sitting areas, the design materials shift from the more symmetrical patterned bluestone to larger pieces of irregular bluestone and boulder retaining walls that provide a more natural and organic sensibility. The fire pit area enjoys more sun as it was placed in an area of the yard that had a few large and compromised mature trees. “We like the fire pit. My daughter practically lives in that area, always having friends over to hang out around a fire. We have even made it a Halloween tradition for the kids to stop by

This bird’s eye view (right) of the entire yard gives you a glimpse of each of the ‘OUTDOOR’ ROOMS that Gasper created for Stephen and Diana. Each area is separate and unique, but together they form a cohesive outdoor space. The use of different red elements in each area such as the red market umbrella, the red sectional and red Adirondack chairs also ties each area together using color. Artfully placed LOW-VOLTAGE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING (below) adds just the right amount of ‘Wow!’ factor to the night scene. Here CAST spot lights dramatically up light a mature multi-stemmed Crape Myrtle tree and path lights softly illuminate irregular bluestone pathways for safer and easier movement after dark.

. homeowners may be intimidated at the thought of reading and understanding architectural blueprints. Scaled blueprints are very important to us to accurately construct your project; but they are not always the best way to convey our design ideas to you. This is why for most project presentations we utilize a computerized 3-D model. The 3-D model allows you to take a virtual walk-through of your proposed landscape project. Want to know exactly what you see when you look out your back door? Or maybe you are having a hard time envisioning wall heights on a multi-level patio? In either case, using the model, we can easily show you. We can rotate views in real time, just as if you were standing there yourself. Our model will give you the confidence that what we are proposing is what you will be getting. In fact, the only thing our 3-D model will leave to your imagination is how much you are going to enjoy your new Gasper-built project!

Where Is Momma Cat During the Pandemic? This year has brought many changes for everyone, including Momma cat. For our new readers: Momma cat was a stray that was discovered in our barn with a litter of kittens. Various employees adopted the kittens, but Momma decided to stay and call Gasper her home. Most of the time, you can find her near a checkout register, napping in our Exterior Furnishings Gallery, or inspecting new arrivals in the nursery. Over the years, she’s become accustomed to our employees and loyal customers, stopping by to visit her while they’re working or shopping. When the stay-at-home order was put into place, Momma was saddened

when she was no longer seeing her regular, friendly faces. Like everyone else who was required to stay home, she had to find a way to keep herself occupied. While “working the registers,” she’ll take advantage of boxes and bags being opened and jump inside them. Despite the changes she and all of us have had to face, Momma has been able to bring joy into all of our lives. Her presence in the store brings a smile to those who meet her, and her unconditional love has helped us keep positive during such a difficult time.

Fighting the Spotted Lanternfly PROTECT YOUR TREES FROM THIS HARMFUL PEST
HE SPOTTED LANTERNFLY (SLF) is an
invasive species native to China, Bangladesh, and Vietnam. In 2014 it was found in Pennsylvania and had since spread to 14 counties, including Bucks, Montgomery, Philadelphia, Delaware, and Chester Counties. SLF is reproducing quickly in our southeastern Pennsylvania area, and SLF has the potential to become a major threat to Pennsylvania’s agriculture and forestry industries. The SLF adult is approximately 1” long and ½” wide at rest. The forewing is grey with black spots, and the wings tips are reticulated black blocks outlined in grey. The hind wings have contrasting patches of red and black with a white band. The legs and head are black; the abdomen is yellow with broad black bands. Immature stages are black with white spots, and they develop red patches as they grow. SLF is not known to bite or sting or attack people, pets, or Adult Spotted Lanternfly infestation on a red maple tree in Berks County, livestock. Although SLF will October 2019. feed on other trees and plants, all life stages strongly prefer the tree of heaven (Ailantus altissima). The PA Department of Agriculture’s recommended technique for controlling SLF is host tree removal and trap tree establishment. There are cases where there may not be Tree of Heaven on your property, but you are finding SFL. The best thing any property owner can do is become informed about SLF. remove and treat the Ailanthus trees on their properties. Property owners can also follow Penn State’s guidelines for using contact pesticides and treatments on a variety of trees and plants. What else? Kill it! Squash it, smash it, get rid of it. These are called bad bugs for a reason. Gasper offers two products for control of SLF, Sevin, a contact insecticide, and Bayer Tree & Shrub, a systemic insecticide. Contact insecticides kill the insect when it contacts the insect’s body. You can use a contact insecticide to kill clusters of SLF within a few hours or days. Systemic insecticides are absorbed into the roots or bark of the tree and move through the tree. When SLF feeds on a tree that contains a toxic level of systemic insecticide, they will die. You can use a systemic insecticide to provide weeks or months of protection for important trees. — EXPERT TIPS —
Eliminate the Spotted Lanternfly Stop the Spotted Lanternfly with Duct Tape Tightly wrap duct tape around your tree with the sticky side facing out. You can also wrap the tree with the sticky side in and cover the tape with vaseline. The lanternflies will not be able to cross the over the band of tape. Consider creating an extra-wide band of tape, and a second band for the lanternflies that might successfully cross over the first band by climbing over their stuck peers.

Choosing Shrubs Ilex (Hollies)
For the Birds
The Ilex family is a group of plants that ties in perfectly with attracting birds. Try one of the evergreen hollies like ‘Blue Princess.’ Birds love the protection that the foliage provides year-round and the red berries make a wonderful accent during the fall and winter months. Ilex verticillata, commonly known as Winterberry Holly, is a native shrub that loses its leaves each autumn. After the leaves have turned yellow and dropped, you are left with a breathtaking view of thousands of brightly-colored berries clinging to every stem. Varieties like ‘Winter Red’ or dwarf varieties like ‘Red Sprite’ are great for bird habitat and as a food supply. Plus, their brilliant red berries can be used to accent some evergreens during the Christmas season.

Viburnums
Viburnums are the stalwart of any good shrub border and not surprisingly they are also equally important plants for creating good bird habitat. Viburnums provide everything from the canopy that shelters the nests of smaller songbirds to a plethora of colored berries that birds love to feast upon. The fruit on Viburnum ranges in color from yellow, and pink, to red and blue with many aging to black. One of our favorites is the blue fruiting variety ‘Blue Muffin.’

Sambucus
Sambucus or Elderberries are a group of plants that are wonderful for birds. They flower in late spring and in summer are covered with large clusters of berries. Today, quality aluminum, iron, wicker, and teak pieces may be stored outdoors simply by covering with outdoor protective furniture covers, eliminating space-storage issues. Outdoor protective covers are machine washable and offer several sizes for all shapes and configurations of furniture pieces. To store a complete dining set you may simply purchase one cover to act as a sombrero, covering the dining table and tucked in chairs rather than cover individually. However, there are some mosaic glass table tops that should be sealed with a protective
paste wax before covering, or brought inside and stored flat in a dry area to avoid cracking due to extreme low temperatures. It is always best to ask your salesperson their recommendations. Outdoor cushions and toss pillows are always recommended to bring indoors and store in large plastic bags, even for Sunbrella fabric items, as squirrels and other critters like to make nests in the fiberfill of the cushions. If there is no room for cushion and toss pillow storage indoors, you would do well using an outdoor storage chest with an inner liner to help keep cushions dry and mildew-free. Make certain to buy one that is all-weather and UV resistant with an aluminum frame and pneumatic hinges to allow for smooth operation.

. to your landscaping, a well-protected pavement is essential. A beautiful pavement will enhance your overall outdoor area and allow these areas to last a lifetime. Pavement does not need a great deal of maintenance if properly protected. Periodically applying a quality sealant will make a significant difference in the overall beauty and quality of your landscape. Protect pavers used for patios, walkways, pool areas, driveways, garden paths and courtyards. There are also other paver materials on the market today that include brick pavers, natural stone pavers and concrete pavers. All of these options and materials will work best if they are properly sealed. Applying a sealer to your pavers will help keep down the build-up of stains including oils and grease. Once they are sealed, you will be able to remove stains easily. A sealer will penetrate below the paver surface so all you have to do is wipe off stains to remove them. If pavers are not protected, these stains will sink into paver surfaces and become almost impossible to get out. The outdoor elements and time will take a toll on unsealed pavers. Pavers need to be thoroughly cleaned and sealed to stop the build-up of dirt and prevent erosion. Applying a sealant to your pavers will preserve their color while increasing their lifetime. It will also keep down the build-up of dust that can be tracked into your home.
