GASPER FAMILY TRADITIONS
We’re growing A few years ago we celebrated the 30th anniversary of Gasper Landscape Design & Construction. From the humble beginnings of designing and planting my own backyard, to a family of companies that include Gasper Home & Garden Showplace and Bucks County Hardscape & Building Supply, I am extremely proud of what Gasper has become and what the Gasper name stands for. As the head of the company, I have always taken the lead in the steering of the ship so to speak, but I would not be giving you the full story if I did not give credit to the very talented and dedicated group of people that have helped me get to where we are today—my family and my employees. When you run any business, some employee turnover is to be expected, but I was not surprised to learn recently just how many of my employees have been with the company for the long haul. A few such as Michael Mauri, my Head of Operations and this issue’s featured project homeowner (page 8) has been a part of the Gasper team from the inception of the company. There is also a strong contingency of people that have been working for our Company for 10–20+ years. We were so proud of our team, we put together a timeline (page 4) featuring our long-term employees and some of the Gasper company milestones. My bet is that there will be a lot of faces that you might recognize if you are a Gasper regular. It is these long term employees that give Gasper the depth of experience and consistency that is needed to continue to deliver such a high level of quality to everything we do: design, construction, products and services. a Staged Renovation Create a phased plan to divide large projects into much more manageable-sized steps

hen Gasper Operations Manager Michael Mauri and his wife, Gloria, were ready to start phase two of their backyard renovations, they quickly took advantage of having immediate access to a few of Michael’s co-workers: Landscape Designer Nick Luppinacci and Exterior Furnishings Designer Eli Hymer, two of the region’s top outdoor designers. 8

T
he area under the roof (left) is quite spacious with room for dining, casual seating and a small bar set. It is also the perfect spot for a trophy blue marlin that Michael caught on their honeymoon. The blue of the marlin was Eli’s inspiration for the furniture color palette.
A
carefully trained branch (above) of a weeping blue atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica ‘Glauca Pendula’) creates a dramatic archway under which visitors enter the deck from the driveway walkway. It was planted almost 20 years ago, and the archway was a happy accident that occurred as the cedar outgrew its original location.

he pool patio (left) was renovated with a beautiful silver travertine paving and coping. With room for chaise lounges and a large sectional with fire table, there is plenty of space for hanging out with family and friends around the pool.
It may surprise you to hear that Michael and Gloria went through the same Gasper design process that any prospective homeowner would. They started with a site meeting at their home with Nick to outline their project’s scope—upgrading an existing pool with an aging concrete patio and adding a cook station with grill and bar seating. Nick created a design layout that was also rendered in a 3D model (models are created by John Gleason, another talented staff landscape designer). The 3D model was a tool that allowed Michael and Gloria to be able to envision what the
proposed design would look like when constructed and to give feedback to Nick about the design. As Michael and Gloria did, creating a phased plan is a common approach to dividing large projects into much more manageable-sized projects. Dividing up into phases can be done for many reasons, including budget and time considerations. Sometimes, it is preferable because it gives the homeowners time to understand better how they will use their spaces. Phased projects often flow best when there is an overall plan done first to help with each CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

a Staged Renovation CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9 project’s planning so that all the construction is done with the end goal fully taken into consideration. In this way, executing phases of an overall plan can save time, headaches, and ultimately money. In the Mauri’s case, phase one was completed almost ten years prior and involved Gasper carpentry crews upgrading an existing wood deck to the current Timbertech composite deck. The new deck was also covered with a large roof to provide protection from the sun and rain. At that time, the existing pool decking was still in reasonably good shape, and they were not 100% sure that they needed more than their stand-alone grill for entertaining purposes. When they were finally ready to proceed with phase two, both their girls were in their teens, and Michael and Gloria knew that they liked to entertain friends and family at the house, so a larger cook station and bar made sense. In addition, at that point, the concrete pool patio required repair, and it became a no-brainer for Michael and Gloria to upgrade to beautiful silver-colored travertine. Travertine is a natural stone paver that is perfect for pool patios because it stays much cooler in full sun and, despite being very smooth, is not slippery when wet. So it not only looks great, it is ideal for bare feet. After phase two construction was complete, Gloria reached out and made an appointment with Eli Hymer in the Exterior Furnishings Gallery to upgrade their old furniture to new outdoor sets. Eli suggested some fun design choices, such as including a large upholstered pouf stool instead of a coffee table and outdoor drapery—which not only helped with late day sun in the eyes of diners on the deck but helped create that feeling of an outdoor room. Michael was familiar with being on the giving side of Gasper services for so many years, so it was a nice feeling for him to receive the same five-star treatment that all of our Gasper clients receive. Crape myrtles are great to use when landscaping around pools because they bloom during the hot summer months when pools are open.

rom the cook station (left), you can see the backside of the outdoor drapery on the deck. When choosing fabric for outdoor drapery, it is important to pick a fabric that looks good on both sides because outdoor drapery is typically viewed from the front and back. The drapes here not only helped with late day sun in the eyes of diners on the deck but helped create that feeling of an outdoor room. HEN YOU SAY GERANIUM most people
think of the bright red flower on the stiff stem, but geraniums or Pelargonium—if you want to be botanically correct, are anything but boring. Geraniums first appeared in America in the late 18th century when Thomas Jefferson sent a plant from France to Philadelphia. Since then they have been hybrized into many different cultivars. Four Common Types of Geraniums Zonal – Zonal geraniums are the most commonly seen. They have
large rounded leaves, sometimes with a dark band. Look for erect stems with large clusters of flowers held above the foliage. Ivy Leaved – These are the trailing type, perfect for spilling over the edge of a container or in a hanging baskets. These tolerate dry

conditions a bit more than other geraniums. Scented leaf – These come in an amazing variety of scents; some of which are lemon, mint and rose. Their leaves are much less showy then the other types, but still nice in any container. Regal – these are also known as Martha Washington geraniums and have larger flowers. They do not like the hot weather, and may drop flower production a bit if it is too hot. Most of us probably can remember seeing geraniums in our grandmother’s garden every summer, or buying them for our mother as a gift for Mother’s Day. Geranimuns are perfect additions for summer containers as they provide colorful blooms throughout the season. So whether you are new to geraniums or buying them again this year, these ladies will make a home in your container or garden this year and maybe for many years to come.

Philodendron Care Tips Philodendron is an easy-to-care-for houseplant that offers something for everyone. The two main types of philodendron are vines and non-climbers. They are not all your typical heart-leaf philodendron that your mom had. Many have beautiful large leaves like the split-leaf, elephant-ear or fiddle-leaf.
Split Leaf Philodendron
• If you’re growing a vining philodendron, give it something, like a trellis or post, on which to grow. • Plant a larger philodendron in a pot on the floor or a sill—or grow smaller varieties, such as heart-leaf, in a basket and hang from a ceiling or beam. • Use a damp cloth to clean philodendron leaves of dust and to maintain the plant’s shine. • Set a potted philodendron near a sunny window, but make sure the rays don’t shine directly on the leaves. Watch your plant for signs: If several leaves turn yellow, the plant is getting too much sun; if the stems grow long with large gaps between the leaves, the plant needs more light. • Allow the top inch of soil to dry out completely before watering the plant. • Even indoor philodendrons appreciate a jaunt outdoors every once in a while. Set the pot outside in a shady spot for some fresh air.

Growing Orchids Orchids are epiphytes, and in their native tropical environments, they grow on trees (not in soil). Plant orchids in an orchid potting mix which contains wood chips or bark and they will be happy. SuperMoss Orchid Bark is natural Douglas fir tree bark. Its pH makes it an ideal potting medium for orchids. It allows for great oxygenation and drainage of water so that the orchid’s roots have constant access to both water and oxygen. Caring for Air Plants Air plants should be kept where they’ll receive bright, indirect sunlight or under fluorescent home/office lighting. Periods of direct sunlight are fine, but more than a few hours of hot sun will deplete the plants of moisture. If your plant will be in a spot with direct sunlight, mist them every couple of days to keep them hydrated.

While air plants don’t grow in soil, they definitely need to be watered. Air plants should be watered at least once per week, and 2–3 times is recommended for optimal care. EONIES ARE DEPENDABLE,
incredibly long-lived plants and will bloom for a generation or more with little or no attention. As cut flowers, peonies have no rivals. Alone or in mixed bouquets, they have an elegant natural beauty and a delicate, unforgettable perfume. Let’s start with the classic spring blooming favorite, herbaceous peonies. With their large blooms that are often fragrant, it is common to see peony plants that have been in the same location for 75 or more years. First, they are called herbaceous peonies because their leaves and stems are herbaceous—meaning they die back to the ground in the winter months. Herbaceous peonies are best suited to gardeners in northern and central states. Herbaceous peonies will start blooming in late April through mid-June depending on the cultivar, location, and weather in that location. Herbaceous peonies typically reach a maximum height of 2–3' with a similar

spread, making them a great perennial for the back of a perennial border. Itoh peonies are a cross between herbaceous peonies and tree peonies. Itoh peonies have many of the same qualities as herbaceous peonies like large, showy and fragrant blooms. Like herbaceous peonies, Itoh hybrid peonies go dormant during the winter months, where the leaves and stems will die back to the ground. The characteristics Itoh peonies get from their other parent, the tree peony, include their sturdy stems which prevent them from being droopy after heavy rain. Itoh hybrid peonies also bloom later in the season and typically start to bloom when the herbaceous peonies are finishing their blooms for the season. The bloom time of Itoh hybrid peonies is also a bit longer than that of herbaceous peonies. Growing 2–3' tall with a similar spread, Itoh peonies will take up about the same amount of space in your garden as herbaceous peonies. SUN AND SHADE Peonies are sun-lovers and will perform best when they get at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. The more sun they get, the better they'll bloom, so it's best to plant your peonies in the sunniest location possible.

Summer Lawn Care A Beneficial Plan for

Heat and drought stress that comes on quickly can be quite shocking to your lawn.
VEN THOUGH THERE MAY BE a lot of
. moisture in the ground after a week of no rain and high temperatures, your lawn can start to show signs of stress. Lawns need about one inch of water weekly to thrive, and during periods of drought the lawn requires more water. It is best to irrigate in the early morning to avoid too much water evaporating. Watering 2–3 times a week usually will be sufficient. Do not wait until your lawn starts to show signs of heat and drought stress to cure the problem.
Seed
Be sure you do not have a build-up of thatch on your lawn. Some thatch is okay but a thatch layer of no more than ½ inch is best. Proper lawn care techniques and feeding and occasional dethatching with a rake or machine helps to reduce thatch. Thatch tends to thrive when your lawn is over-fertilized. Using organic lawn products can be helpful to reduce thatch possibilities. Organics promote soil microbial activity and can help to create a balance in the soil which is not favorable for thatch growth.

I am so glad you asked this question, Mary! Any type of outdoor performance fabric (think Sunbrella) can be used to create exterior curtains or drapery. Unlike upholstery or interior curtains, it is important to have a fabric that is visually appealing on its front AND back sides because exterior curtains and drapery are often seen from both sides. I like to suggest the use of drapery on structures such as pavilions, porches and pergolas. Visually they add to the ambiance and help to create the feeling of an outdoor room. They can be very practical as well, providing shade and privacy.
