hey come in all sizes and shapes.

Some are tall and some are short. Some have the body of an athlete and some do not.

They range in age from just out of high school to senior citizen.

But they all share the same passion.

On any given Friday night, there is nowhere they would rather be than at a packed stadium, ready to step out onto the field to officiate a high school football game.

This season marks the 30th year Steve Jensen has been a football official. Jensen, the past president and current game assignor of the Snohomish County Football Officials Association, started his officiating career in 1987 right after he graduated from Lakewood High School. Growing up, Jensen spent a lot of time with his father, who was an official for 20 years.

The Snohomish County Football Officials Association (SCFOA) has seen a boom in membership in the six years since Jensen became the assignor. When he started, the organization had 62 officials.

This year the association has 105 members.

The growth generally can be attributed to word of mouth.

“If you become an official and you like it, you’re going to tell your buddies,” Jensen said. “They’re going to come out. Those two people will tell a

couple of other people. It works out great.”

Brian Clute played football in high school when he lived in California. One of his children also played football in high school.

Even after his son graduated, Clute’s love of the sport never went away.

“After they were done playing, I wanted to get back into football,” the Edmonds resident said.

So last year, Clute signed up to be a football official. It turned out to be an eye-opening experience.

“It’s very intense. There’s a lot to learn, more than people realize,” said Clute, who is a physical therapist at Aurora Village Physical Therapy. “It takes a lot of study and dedication to the rule book.”

“Instead of putting your foot in the water, your toe in the water, it’s more like getting thrown into the deep end,” Clute said. “Football is very intense. People are yelling and screaming and here you are, barely knowing the rules and mechanics of the game. You’re just sure you’re going to screw up.”

Clute not only survived his debut as an official but flourished throughout his first year, moving on to middle school and high school junior varsity games. He even ended up working some varsity games late in the season, which few officials do in their first year.

The first varsity contest he worked brought back the same feelings as his debut at the youth game.

“It was like being at the first game again,” Clute said.

Rotary Club hosts golf tournament

Register for fall sports programs

The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club hosts its sixth annual golf fundraising tournament on Friday, Aug. 26, at the Harbour Pointe Golf Club in Mukilteo.

The shotgun start will be at 1:30 pm. The format is best ball/scramble. Entrance fee for golfers is $140 per player. The fee includes the round of golf, use of a cart, range balls, entry into several contests, and a dinner and awards presentation after the golf, also at Harbour Pointe.

A number of contests within the tournament are included in the entry fee, such as long drive for men and women, straightest drive, closest to the pin (including one for a new car from Brien Motors), and a putting contest.

Net proceeds from the event are expected to go to the YMCA in the Mukilteo/Casino Road area, the Boys & Girls Club on Casino Road and the Larry Busch Scholarship Fund.

The Run-A-Muk 5k/10k is accepting registration for the annual run/walk set for Aug. 27 throughout the city of Mukilteo.

Participants can run or walk individually or as a team. New this year is a virtual option.

A kids dash for youth 8 and younger is free and registration discounts are available for military and first responders.

Registration includes a finisher’s medal, free race photo, race goodie bag, pre/post event food and beverages and professionally chip timed results (optional 450 chips available).

On race day, participants are encouraged to arrive no later than 7:15 a.m. at the Rosehill Community Center. Surface roads and parking will close at that time.

The kids dash started at 7:45 a.m. Register your child at the late registration table on race day or during early packet pickup. Three waves of runners and walkers follow will run the course at 8, 8:05 and 8:10. Awards are set for 8:45 a.m. and 9:45 a.m.

The Mukilteo Boys & Girls Club is accepting regisration for its fall soccer, fall volleyball and flag football programs.

The club offers a 4 and 5 year old co-ed soccer clinic ($75), a kindergarten/first grade co-ed soccer league ($100) and second/third grade and fourth/ fifth grade separate boys and girls soccer league ($100).

Fall volleyball for grades 3 through high school and flag football for ages 5-14 also are available.

The programs start the week of Sept. 19 at either the Mukilteo Boys & Girls Club or at a Mukilteo school.

school and about 400 youth games. The SCFOA is so large now that other associations sometimes contact the organization for officials.

The first-year officials are assigned with the most experienced members. The association does not have set crews, so each week an official is assigned to a different game and will be working with different officials.

Officials come from all walks of life. Many are former players and former coaches. Some are former coaches of other sports. Others are retirees who are looking for ways to stay active and to stay involved in their community. While many officials work only during the football season, others also officiate other sports, such as

basketball, baseball, softball and wrestling. The association has had high school students, who officiate youth games on Saturdays, and its oldest member is in his mid-70s.

A common thread that Jensen sees in successful officials is confidence.

“Be strong. Look the part,” he said. “Act the part. Look like an official. Act like an official and they’ll think you are, even if you aren’t.”

Communication skills are critical, according to Clute.

“Your ability to relate to people also is very important,” he said.

Being a good listener also goes a long way toward instilling confidence, according to Jensen.

“I always have had the phi-

All the first-year officials are grouped together, which helps encourage questions.

“It’s nice to kind of be in a room with everyone else that’s new,” Flores said. “There’s no real bad question to ask because we’re all starting from the same point.”

First-year officials face the toughest crowds starting out – parents of youth players.

“Youth football can be challenging for new officials because they don’t know how to deal with them (parents),” Jensen said. “You get some parents who aren’t very nice to them.”

Jensen said that officials sometimes encounter parents who think their son is going to be the next Russell Wilson, when he probably is not.

The officials have enough on their minds when they are starting out.

“They’re worried about how to officiate, and they’re just learning,” Jensen said. “Then you have some parents screaming at them.”

Clute doesn’t like being yelled at but recognizes that means people are emotionally involved in the game.

“It’s also part of the allure – to be part of that intense situation,” Clute said.

The SCFOA provides officials for 22 high schools, mainly in Snohomish County, but also in Island and King counties. The association also works middle

Learn basics of golf at Harbour Pointe The Harbour Pointe Golf Club hosts Oki Golf ’s Junior Golf Camp Aug. 23-25. Junior golfers will learn and improve their golf game in a fun, friendly atmosphere. The camp will help introduce junior golfers to the importance of rules and etiquette, and build fundamentals and practice habits for lifelong improvement and enjoyment of the game. “It’s a very fun avocation,” Clute said.

Two more Lacrosse Fun Days coming

The Mukilteo Boys & Girls Club presents two more Lacrosse Sunday Fun Days in August.

Sunday Fun Days are for boys and girls in grade 1-8 and are scheduled for Aug. 21 and 28.

Sessions will be held from 5-7 p.m. at Harbour Pointe Middle School, which is located at 5000 Harbour Point Blvd.

Activities include box lacrosse (short field) and 6-on-6, with high school players as coaches and goalies. Each team will have a coach and the goalie to help them learn the game. Participants must have a U.S. Lacrosse Membership ($25) Visit uslacrosse.com and sign up. Players should bring mouth guard, cup and gear if they have it.

Family matters

Kamiak’s Dan and Johnny Mack share love of coaching

an and Johnny Mack share a lot in common.

The Macks, father and son, both teach.

Dan, the longtime head football coach at Kamiak High School, is at the high school, while Johnny, an assistant coach, teaches at Olympic View Middle School.

The two share a passion for coaching football.

“I love the sport. I love the game,” Johnny said. “It’s a great way to spend time with my dad, doing something that he loves and doing something that I love.”

The two also realize how fortunate they are to have been able to work together for the last five years.

Dan coached Johnny for three years at Kamiak before he left to continue his football career at Central Washington University. Dan didn’t think that football would bring the two back together again.

“I never imagined him coaching with me,” Dan said. “It just kind of happened. He was our ball boy here at Kamiak, and he ended up playing here as quarterback. And the next thing he ended up being a teacher. Somehow he ended up in the Mukilteo School District and coaching with me.”

After Johnny’s football career ended, he coached at Ellensburg High School and eventually came back to student teach at Olympic View. He also taught and coached at Lakewood High School for a year before returning to the Mukilteo School District and the Kamiak football program. Johnny has been officially on the football staff for five years, though he started volunteering when he moved back.

Johnny, 32, describes coaching as being in the family blood.

“I’ve always love coaching football,” he said. “It’s kind of a natural progression to start working your way up to the high school. … It was just kind of natu-

ral fit. He needed a coach, and I wanted to coach with him.”

Johnny currently is the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. His responsibilities have varied through the years, including different offensive duties. In addition to being on staff at two other high school football programs, Johnny coached football, boys and girls basketball, and track and field at Olympic View before coming to Kamiak.

Dan, 62, saw that Johnny, with his experience and knowledge of the game, could be an asset to the coaching staff.

“His knowledge, for his age, is remarkable,” Dan said. “He’s been around the game for so long. … He’s a bright guy and he sees things from another generation. I just love it. I’ve learned a lot from my son. I’ve picked up a lot, just his knowledge and his love from the game and how he deals with kids. It’s been humbling.”

Johnny didn’t have to look far for a role model and mentor. Dan coached Johnny in almost every sport when he was growing up.

“I’ve always had him as a coach,” Johnny said. “I always respected my father very much and thought he was a fantastic coach and a mentor. He inspired me to do my best and do what I love and I’m doing it.”

A quote of his father has stuck with Johnny throughout his life.

“One of his quotes that I always like to quote in my classroom and in my master’s thesis was ‘Inspired people inspire people,’” Johnny said. “He is an inspirer, a coach that inspires others.”

During his time at Kamiak as a player, Johnny remembers Dan as being a coach who trusted his players.

It’s the same now that he’s a coach on his father’s staff.

“We have trust in other each,” Johnny said. “He allows me to have the freedom to do what I need to, the same as a coach.”

The players respond to Johnny and they work hard for him, Dan said.

“I love listening to him,” Dan said. “I watch him speak to the team and I think about how he was just a little boy jumping on bags and running around and getting into things when I was a young coach.”

Last week, Johnny’s son Carter, Dan’s grandson, was out at practice.

“It just brings tears to my eyes when I see my son out here with my grandson,” Dan said. “It’s an indescribable joy when I’m here with them.

“It’s a complete blessing to be able to coach with my son. It’s such an honor.”

As with all coaching staffs, emotions can run high during games and differences of opinions surface even between father and son.

“One of the best things about being a son and assistant is the fact that at the end of the day, it’s just a game,” Johnny

said. “And as much as the sidelines can get heated or the sport brings out thec passion and intensity in people, at thel end, he’s still my father and I’m stillF his son and we still love each other. Weo might not agree on things. We mightp disagree, but it’s OK because ironf sharpens iron.”

In looking to the future, Johnny saidh his career goals have always been tot eventually become a head coach, thoughb he’s uncertain as to the timetable. With a 1-year-old son and another baby dueH in October, Johnny admits he’s prettyp busy and said that it’ll happen in God’s time.

For now, football practices are in full swing and the season is fast approaching. And for Johnny and Dan, it’s another year of creating memories that will last for a lifetime.

“I love coaching football, but I love being with my father more,” Johnny said.

f there is one thing you need to know about Meadowdale, it is that there is no quit in this team.

No matter what the odds.

Facing all but certain defeat in a first round 3A state playoff football game, the Mavericks pulled off the near impossible.

Meadowdale trailed Kelso 20-18 with 1:07 left in the fourth quarter. The Mavericks had moved the ball from deep in their own territory, but the drive stalled and Meadowdale was confronted by a fourthand-19 at the Hilander 48.

“It doesn’t matter what happens. It doesn’t matter when it happens,” Meadowdale coach Matt Leonard said. “Our kids just keep battling. They never give up. They always believe in each other.”

Leonard looked to senior quarterback Drew Tingstad and senior wide receiver Haelin Roberts. He told them, “It’s been you guys the whole time, all year long. For years, throwing the ball together. Go make a play.”

Tingstad dropped back to pass and feeling the pressure stepped up in the pocket. Running down the middle of the field, Roberts achieved separation from his defender.

Tingstad lofted a perfect pass to Roberts, who caught the ball in mid-stride around the 20 and raced to the corner of the end zone to score the go-ahead and ultimately winning touchdown with 57 seconds remaining, as the Mavericks pulled out a stunning 24-20 victory Friday night at Edmonds Stadium.

“It’s incredible,” Roberts said. “We never quit on each other. We never back down. …

We just know there’s nothing that can stop us, as long as we stick together.”

Tingstad and Roberts have grown up playing football together since they were little.

“I knew who the ball was going to before the ball was even snapped,” Tingstad said.

“I knew he would make a play and sure enough, he did. I just love that guy. I love this team so much.”

Roberts, who caught seven passes for 92 yards, had an idea of what route he wanted to run.

“We knew that if I sent them (defenders) to the outside and then cut back in, I’d be all by myself and then it was just get in,” Roberts said.

Meadowdale (9-2 overall), the Wesco 3A champion, hosts South Sound Conference champion Peninsula (10-1) in a state quarterfinal game at 7 p.m.

Friday, Nov. 18 at Edmonds Stadium.

It will be the Mavericks’ sixth appearance in the quarterfinals. Meadowdale has yet to advance to the semifinals.

“We’re really looking forward to it,” Tingstad said of Friday’s game. “Just like any other game, we like our guys. We’re looking forward to seeing the next challenge. We know we’re going to persevere through it like the last two weeks.”

The Mavericks’ resolve was put to the test by Kelso in the final 57 seconds of Friday’s game. The Hilanders moved the ball from their own 30 down to the Meadowdale 2. Kelso fumbled the ball on the final play of the game.

“They made the plays they needed to get themselves down the field,” Leonard said. “Those kids are tough.”

With seven seconds left in the game, the Hilanders completed a 29-yard pass down to the Maverick 2 and after consulting with each other, the officials put one second back on the clock after it appeared time had run out. Kelso fumbled the ball, but the officials apparently had not given the OK for the play to start and the Hilanders had another chance to win the game.

Roberts, who was part of the goal line defense, didn’t have much time to wonder what was going on with the officials.

To start the second half, Meadowdale came out with a different look on offense with senior running back Kela Marshall in the Wildcat offense.

The change helped spark the Mavericks. Marshall ran for 36 yards on the first play. Tingstad later scored on a 5-yard run to give Meadowdale a 10-3 lead.

them,” Leonard said. “They have a lot of guys that play both ways. We don’t.”

Kelso answered with a 21yard touchdown pass from AJ Hoggette to Riley Noah to tie the score at 10. The Hilanders then took a 17-10 lead on a 24yard pass from Hoggette to Emmett Hinch.

Early in the fourth quarter, Kelso lined up to punt, but the ball was snapped past the punter and into the end zone for a Meadowdale safety. Then on the first play from scrimmage, Marshall ran for a 50-yard touchdown to give the Mavericks an 18-17 lead with 9:41 left in the fourth quarter. Marshall finished with 131 yards.

“He’s a warrior,” Leonard said. “He’s so beat up right now and he just battles through it every week. … He’s kind of the heartbeat of our team. We rode him tonight. When we need plays, we got him the football.”

Kelso retook a 20-18 lead on a 35-yard field goal by Soto with 3:08 left in the game. The lead lasted just over two minutes before Tingstad found Roberts for the game-winning touchdown.

“I looked over right after I finished and I saw the other girl finish right behind, so I knew I won that one,” Morgan said of the 100 butterfly.

It took a few more seconds for Morgan to realize she placed first in the 200 freestyle, as she looked at the scoreboard to see her time and placement.

“I knew that it was going to be a close race,” she said. “It was down to the last five meters, five yards.”

Her two times in the finals were both faster than her seed and preliminary times.

At last year’s state meet in Virginia, Morgan took seventh place in the same events she swam in on Saturday. Morgan, however, was competing in a higher classification – 6A – in Virginia.

“It really was a great accomplishment for me last year,” she said.

Morgan is headed to Washington State next fall, where she will continue her swim career.

“I’m really excited to be there,” she said. “I’ll have some new teammates, new competition.”

Winning two state titles boosted Morgan’s confidence.

“It just means good things for club swimming this year and swimming next year for college,” she said.

Morgan, along with Lena Osterberg, Jersey Razzano and Elly Bray advanced to the 400 freestyle relay consolation finals, where they finished 15th overall.

Edmonds-Woodway’s Morgan Broadhead placed fifth in the 100 freestyle and 14th in the 100 breaststroke.

Kamiak, Mariner face off in Unified BasketballM Teams are composesd of Special Olympics athletes, student peers

The Unified Basketball teams from Kamiak and Mariner high schools are scheduled to play their first game of the season on Thursday, Jan. 26, at Kamiak High School.

Unified Sports is a relatively new program in the Mukilteo School District where Special Olympics athletes or students with special needs are paired up with Unified Partners or student peers.

Each Unified Basketball team consists of three Special Olympics athletes and two partners.

This is the first year Mariner is fielding a Unified Basketball team and the second season for Kamiak.

Last year, Kamiak hosted an intrasquad scrimmage for its team. Kamiak student Prabhnoor Bassi attended the event and it opened his eyes.

“I had never seen anything like it before,” Bassi said. “Just to see the smiles on these kids’ faces, not even from playing basketball but just to be there, and how much fun they were having, meant the world to me. It was super amazing.”

Bassi joined Kamiak Companions, an after-school club where he and others interacted with special needs students.

Bassi learned more about Unified Basketball and decided to join the team.

“It’s just really fun to come here and practice with them every day and see them grow as people,” Bassi said. “It’s really cool to interact with them and to watch them grow and grow along side them and learn new things.”

Mariner’s Makayla Pugmire previously was a peer tutor working with special needs students. She had friends on the Unified Basketball team, who encouraged her to come out for the team.

Pugmire, who had not played sports before, sees the program as way to become involved with the community and to learn skills that she will be able to take with her later in life. She has interests in social and behavioral studies.

“I thought getting different types of learning experiences was important,” Pugmire said.

Pugmire said that the Special Olympics athletes benefit in many ways by being a part of the Unified Basketball team.

“It creates a great place for involvement and helps them build communication skills for later in life,” she said.

“These kids are eventually going to be independent. It helps them learn how to make closer relationships with people and learn to communicate and stay motivated, which I think is really important for them.”

Margaret Depuy said her son Seijin, a junior at Mariner High School, has always been a shy child. Through his involvement with Unified Sports and the basketball team he’s opened up to others.

“He hates being labeled and this was the perfect opportunity to be able to say ‘I’m just with the regular kids, playing basketball,’” Margaret said. “He didn’t want to limit himself just being a Spe-

cial Olympic athlete or a special needs child.”

Seijin also participated in Unified Bowling and Track and Field. But basketball seems to be his first love.

“I’m kind of good at some moves and I’m good at jump shots and layups,” Seijin said. “I’ve done this since I was 12 or 13.”

Mariner edges Cascade Knights hold on to beat Wolfpack

A

fter shooting a dismal 2 for 15 in the third quarter, Mariner needed a spark on offense in order to pull out a victory over Cascade.

So the Marauders cranked up the defense, forcing turnovers that led to a strong offensive performance that enabled Mariner to defeat the Bruins 39-31 in a Wesco 4A girls basketball game Jan. 11 at Mariner High School.

The Marauders, trailing 2422 after three quarters of play, outscored Cascade 17-7 in the final period.

“The intensity level picked up,” said Mariner junior guard Denisa Grebovic, who scored 11 points. “We started playing some defense and pressuring them. … Our defense helped our offense.”

“All I see is improvement. We just keep fighting hard. I’m really proud of our team.”

Mariner (3-4 in the league 6-7 overall) shot 5 of 9 from the field in the fourth quarter and made 6 of 8 free throws.

“We’ll take those (numbers),” Mariner coach Corey Gibb said. “It was a completely different fourth quarter, a completely different tempo.”

Cascade’s Kharial Clark led all scorers with 17 points but the 6-foot-2 center was limited to only 2 points in the fourth quarter.

Mariner doesn’t back down from taller players, Gibb noted.

“We take the philosophy of attacking the bigs and we hope to get them in some foul trouble,” Gibb said. “She was aggressive on the rebounds and we did good job of blocking out, so she got a couple of fouls on that.

“They are held to the same standard as other athletes,” McClaskey said.

Richard, who coaches the team with his wife Nicole, admits that coaching Unified Basketball has been a change of pace from football and track and field.

The emphasis at practices is building relationships with each other, Richard said. Both Special Olympic athletes and Unified Partners learn a lot about each other.

“You have kids that may not normally interact with one another in the halls, working really closely together to achieve a common goal,” Richard said.

Kamiak senior Cesar Estrada worked with special needs students in art class and was encouraged to look into Unified Basketball by a teacher. He’s glad he joined the team.

“Every day after we finish up, I have this feeling that I’ve made new friends,” Estrada said. “I love to see these kids smiling. It’s amazing interacting with them, talking to them.

They always have a smile on their face.”

The opening tipoff for the Unified Basketball game is set for 7 p.m. Both teams are aiming to come out with a victory.

“I’m hoping the team will win,” Seijin said.

The Knights (5-2 in the league 10-4 overall) outscored the Wolfpack 18-5 in the fourth quarter.

Kamiak coach Cory West was impressed by his team’s resilience in facing a surging Jackson squad.

“I saw some kids that didn’t want to lose. A bunch of seniors who didn’t want to lose.

Captains who didn’t want to lose. A bench who didn’t want to lose,” West said. “I don’t talk wins and losses very much to my guys, but I saw a bunch of kid who didn’t want to lose.”

Tuttle liked the sense of urgency the Knights played with in the fourth quarter.

“We just need to work on sustaining that through the whole game,” he said. “We need to work on sustaining the tempo throughout the game – knowing when to push the ball, knowing when to slow it down.”

Kamiak came out strong, jumping all over the Wolfpack to take a 25-10 lead after the first eight minutes of action.

Parker Manalo started to get into a rhythm. Manalo finished with a team-high 26 points and helped the Timberwolves head into halftime with only a 40-34 deficit.

“Parker hit some nice shots.

He hit some really tough shots,” Tuttle said. “He’s one of the best shooters in the league.

So his spark quickly got their fans into the game.”

There seemed to be little that the Knights could do to halt Jackson in the second quarter.

“I don’t think it was a lack of execution. A couple of times it was not finding the shooters in transition and that started early in the second quarter,” West said. “Manalo just got hot and he started knocking down shots.”

Senior guard Jordan Brajcich scored 7 of his 10 points in the third quarter on back-

to-back jumpers, followed by a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 52-51 with 1:04 left.

“I thought we expended a ton of energy,” Jackson coach Steve Johnson said of players’ effort. “It’s hard to kind of take that next step and we had some pretty good looks to take the lead. We couldn’t hit them.”

Heading into the final period, Tuttle decided to be aggressive to the hoop.

“I tried to attack the basket and get layups,” he said. “Some of the jump shots weren’t falling, so we just really focused on attacking the paint, trying to get their foul numbers up and get us on the free throw line.”

Kamiak made 5 of 7 free throws in the final period. Danny Sharpe scored 16 points and Christian Clausen added 13 for the Knights. Landon Overtuff had 10 points.

Magnificent Mavericks win state championship

eadowdale had a secret.

If fans looked closely at the Mavericks, they could see the letters GBG written on the inside wrist of the players.

Up until last weekend, only the team knew what the letters meant.

But after Meadowdale defeated Enumclaw 10-0 in the 3A state softball championship game, the secret finally could be revealed to all.

“It meant ‘go beyond good,’ which was our goal for the season,” senior Kaitlyn Webster said. “Go beyond the norm and just be the best we can be, and if that means being great, then be great.”

The GBG rallying cry led the Mavericks to their first-ever softball title May 28 at the Regional Athletic Center in Lacey.

“One team. One heart. One mission, and they finished it,” Meadowdale coach Dennis Hopkins said.

The victory was an allaround team effort with sophomore Lauren Wallace belting a three-run home run in the first inning, Webster driving in two runs with a single in the same inning, and junior Emma Helm smacking a two-run home run in the fourth. As she did all tournament long, junior pitcher Lauren Dent dominated the opposition with a 3-hit, 6-inning complete-game shutout.

“It feels amazing,” said Wallace, minutes after she and her teammates hoisted the championship trophy at home

plate. “I’m just so proud of everybody.”

Helm hit a two-out double to enable senior Julia Reuble to score the team’s 10th run in the bottom of the sixth inning and secure the win due to the 10-run mercy rule.

“I can’t believe it,” Helm said.

“I thought she (outfielder) was going to catch it.”

But the ball dropped, Reuble slide home safely and bedlam reigned on the diamond.

Helm, who didn’t quite know what was happening, retreated to the base.

“I even went back to the base, because I didn’t know if it was over or not like, ‘What do I do?’”

After four straight trips to state and a third place finish last year, Meadowdale (24-3) finally experienced the ultimate success principally because of the team’s four seniors – Samantha Gregoryk, Reuble, Webster and Madison Buchea.

The four won district titles as freshmen and as seniors, four league championships and lost a total of five league games in four years.

“They came in telling all the younger players ‘we want to finish on top. Help us get there,’” Hopkins said. “Everybody bought in, and everybody wanted to help each other. This is the best team. They played like a team.”

All four years the players worked hard but came up short, Webster noted. “This was our last chance to really go out with a bang, and this was the last opportunity we were

We just wanted to play our best and if that results in the state championship, it would. But we were ultimately looking to play good games and that ultimately led us to winning.”

Webster helped to ignite the six-run first inning by drawing a walk against Enumclaw’s Quinn Breidenbach. Savanna Spratt then was hit by a pitch and after an out, Helm singled to left field to score Webster.

Wallace followed with her three-run round tripper to center field.

“I just had the mentality of just getting a base hit because that’s all we need to win is just a base hit and it just happened,” Wallace said.

Junior Kaylee Williams followed with a single and advanced to third on Dent’s double. Buchea then was hit by a pitch. Webster returned to the plate and drove in two runs with a single to right field.

“We wanted to jump on Quinn early just because she is a good pitcher,” Webster said.

“Our goal was to score first and then win every inning from there. That first inning, I don’t

think we were really expecting to score that many runs but we did and I think it was really important in hindsight because it put a lot of pressure on the other team.”

Other coaches have told Hopkins that they don’t like to

pitch to the Mavericks and that sentiment was felt throughout the two-day tournament. Meadowdale defeated Wesco North rival Marysville-Pilchuck 12-2 in the semifinals. The Maver see

King’s Schools Athlete of the Week Congratulations to Emily Burdett for being named King’s High School Athlete of the week. Emily was a key factor in the King’s Lady Knight’s golf team winning the 1A State Championship.

Teammate Hannah Roh shot a Liberty Lake GC record 69 and Emily shot a personal best placing 12th. Emily moved up from 20th place to 12 on the second day. The combination of 1st and 12th place finishes was enough to win the title. In matches leading up to state Emily placed 5th at the District 1 tournament, 8th at Bi-District.

ne of Yukino Parle’s goals was to win a state title.

The Edmonds-Woodway sophomore expected that she might contend for a championship during her senior season.

She was wrong.

Ahead of schedule, Parle took first place in the 3,200-meter race at the 3A state track and field championships May 28 at Mount Tahoma High School.

Parle finished in 10 minutes 49.05 seconds, just ahead of district rival Malia Pivec of Lynnwood, who was right behind her in 10:50.16.

“It’s cool to be able to do this much earlier than expected,” Parle said.

Coming into the season, Parle wasn’t thinking about a state title.

“My goal was mainly to qualify for state again and I achieved that goal,” she said.

“Once state came around, I didn’t plan on placing. I was going to run to the best of my ability and have fun.”

Parle said her strategy in the finals was to stick with the pack and have a strong kick at the end and see what happened.

“Yukino works very hard and incredibly driven and competitive,” Edmonds-Woodway coach Rick Fillman said. “She is very tough mentally and al-

“Last year, I was just a freshman and I really didn’t know what I was doing,” Parle said.

“I was really nervous. I never ran against so many fast runners. Having my teammate there gave me a lot of confidence. … We worked through things together. It was nice to have someone that could help me.”

Edmonds-Woodway junior Vernice Keyes took second place in the girls discus with a throw of 127-07. Teammate Allyson Ely finished eighth in the pole vault with a mark of 10-0. The Warriors’ 800 relay team of Morgan Davis Selina Ballard, Ella Spillane and Gaby Chappell took sixth overall.

Sophomore Hannah Hicks was ninth in the high jump.

Senior Grant Whitcutt took home a pair of medals in the boys meet, finishing fourth in the high jump and fifth in the pole vault. Junior Matthew Park placed seventh in the 3,200 and 11th in the 1,600. Junior Sam McCloughan took 10th in the 3,200 and senior Grady Okeson took 15th in the 1,600.

Meadowdale junior Cyrus Marshall was 12th in the pole vault. Teammate Harry White did not advance out of the 110 and 300 hurdle preliminaries.

King’s Perry captures 100 title at 1A meet King’s Caleb Perry finished

first in the boys 100-meter dash at the 1A state track and field championships.

Perry clocked in with a Caleb Perry time of 11.17 seconds. The King’s junior took second place in the 200 with a time of 22.23, just .01 seconds behind winner Keyhon Ross of Medical Lake, who finished in 22.22.

Perry, along with Connor McElmurry, Silas Newby and Matt Jackson placed second in the 1,600 relay. The 400 relay squad of Ben Hermes, Duncan Cull, Brennon Blevins and Perry was fifth.

Other top finishers for the Knights were junior Luke Wicks (fifth in pole vault), sophomore Peter Kulits (fifth in triple jump, sixth in 110 hurdles), sophomore Taylor Schoenfeld (eighth in discus) and senior Cull (10th in javelin, 13th in triple jump).

Junior Maddie Nielson finished third in the girls high jump and sixth in the triple jump. The 400 relay team of Sydney Jones, Nicole Jacobson, Mikayla Bryant and Anna Parker took fifth and the 800 relay squad of Jones, Bryant, Gillian Edgar and Jacobson also placed fifth.

Jacobson took fifth in the shot put and sophomore Sylvia Hendrix finished 14th in the shot put. Senior Rachel Mills was 10th in the pole vault.

“She’s just has been lights out,” Helm said. “It’s been so fun. We’ve grown as a pair.”

Dent’s strength is that she keeps batters off-balance, Webster said. “She doesn’t throw the same pitch twice. She works really hard. She’s our workhorse.”

Dent also has veteran poise.

“Fantastic job for her and to have that composure as a junior is tough,” Hopkins said.

From top to bottom, every player contributed to the win, Wallace said. “We all had a part to play.”

Hopkins echoes his shortstop’s sentiments.

“They earned it. They worked for it,” he said. “We just guide the ship. They’re the ones who have to do all the work and they put it together.”

The players were in it, not for themselves, but for their teammates, Webster said. “We were playing for each other more than we were playing for ourselves.”
