City butts Welcome back, Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival heads with T Ivar’s, Muk Landing Two fences are up on prime waterfront property BY DAVID PAN REPORTER @ YOURBEACON . NET
V
isitors to the Mukilteo waterfront may have noticed new fences on two prime pieces of property. The tenant and owner of the properties – the waterfront parklet and the lot opposite Ivar’s – put up both fences after what they view as unsatisfactory dealings with the City. The initial plans for the parklet included a space for outdoor dining for Ivar’s, as well as a portion of the park for the public. The parklet, situated where the approach ramp to the former ferry terminal was located, is owned by the Port of Everett. The parklet opened Aug. 5 and closed the next day after a visit from the Mukilteo fire marshal. Ivar’s subsequently was told it needed to apply for additional permits. Ivar’s withdrew its requests because the delays in approving the permits would have pushed outdoor dining into September, past what it considers to be the optimal time. Ivar’s President Bob Donegan said last week the company is now waiting to hear back from the City on how to resolve a parking issue. One of the City’s requirements is for Ivar’s to provide parking if it adds outdoor see

ake a bow, Mukilteo. The return of the Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival was a rousing success. Aside from a little rain Friday evening and Sunday morning, Mother Nature provided picture-perfect late summer weather for residents and out-of-town guests at the three-day festival at Lighthouse Park. The highlight of Friday was the arrival of the Mukilteo MukFest Pirates of the Salish Sea, who made a grand entrance on the waterfront from a pirate boat. The pirates mingled with children and adults and even shot off a cannon to wake up the neighborhood. Saturday offered a full array of fun ranging from the return of the Lighthouse Parade with bands and dancers, delectable treats on the Avenue of Food, superb musical performances in the Mukilteo Chamber of Commerce’s beer garden, and of course, a spectacular fireworks show to close out the night. Many runners of all ages and abilities set their alarm clocks early for an 8 a.m. start for the Run-A-Muk 5K/10K races. The rest of the day offered more of a leisurely pace as festival-goers enjoyed shopping at the various Marketplace booths, and children learned about parrots from the Parrot Lady and enjoyed entertainment from the Vibe and Allegro dance teams. The only thing to say after months of tireless work by a dedicated group of volunteers: Let’s do it again next year.
Harbour Pointe Middle School reports confirmed case of COVID-19 District says only close contacts will be notified in the future BY DAVID PAN REPORTER @ YOURBEACON . NET
A
confirmed case of COVID-19 meant some students at Harbour Pointe Middle School had to stay home for one day last week. Harbour Pointe Middle School principal Steve Coram said in a letter to families that a person at the school tested positive for COVID-19, and that person was last on campus on Thursday, Sept. 9. Families who had children determined to be close contacts were asked to keep their children home on Friday, Sept. 10. Students’ absences were excused and Friday
was considered a non-school day. “All students were asked to stay home Friday to give staff time to investigate potential close contacts,” Mukilteo School District communications and public relations director Diane Bradford said. The district sent out additional emails Saturday morning. Some students were able to return to school this week, while others had to stay away. “There were 72 nonvaccinated students at Harbour Pointe Middle School who will need to quarantine for 14 days, and 70 vaccinated see
