WTF!?!? Tidbits In light of being cheated on, Kristin Stewart is apparently “inconsol-
able […] meanwhile, [she] has been reaching out via texts and phone calls.” In retaliation, Rob is allegedly seeking out Reese Witherspoon’s vag. I’m so tired of ‘eh’-looking people dominating the news. So basically, Robert Pattinson has transitioned from one ‘eh’ person to another. He definitely has a type.
The National Enquirer says Macaulay Culkin is allegedly hooked on heroin, oxycodone, Percocet, and Vicodin... so basically, the gay man’s diet.
Karl Lagerfeld has come out in opposition of Pippa Middleton ever showing her face. To quote him, “I don’t like [Kate Middleton’s] sister’s face. She should only show her back.” When you have an ass like that, it couldn’t hurt… Taylor Swift is dating a Kennedy, to which I can only say, you go, girl. Also, be careful, the family is kinda cursed. Henry Hopper, the 21-year-old son of the late Dennis Hopper, is being accused of rape and sodomy. Apparently he schmoozed some 15-year-old girl on Facebook, fed her drugs and booze (totally against her will *eye roll*), and then had sex with her. I don’t want to distract from the seriousness of forcible sodomy, but I’m just saying, he could have sodomized me and it wouldn’t have been a crime. Beyoncé is reportedly shopping around a biographical film... about Beyoncé... directed by Beyoncé... starring Beyoncé. Her ego knows no bounds. Your move, Gwyneth Paltrow.
In response to the theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado, Dane Cook made a
joke at the Laugh Factory in L.A., saying, “I’m pretty sure that somebody in that theater, about 25 minutes in realizing it was a piece of crap, probably was like, ‘Ugh, fucking shoot me.’” So I see he’s continuing his trend of being completely un-funny.
Katy Perry and John Mayer might be a thing. You’d think going from Russell
Brand, pretty much anyone would be an upgrade, but leave it to Katy to hook up with someone who looks even more in need of a bath.
Snoop Dogg has changed his name to Snoop Lion, proclaimed he’s the reincarnation of Bob Marley, and recorded a reggae album. Translation: he’s smoking some really good shit. by Lucas Witherspoon david atlanta | 11

community for Thai, Japanese, and Vietnamese food. Rain’s staff is predominantly Thai and the mantra they exhibit is “Sawaddika,” a Thai greeting with the underlying tone of respectful humility. But Rain is not your typical Thai restaurant; they offer some bold, unique flavors like rich Lobster sushi rolls, and Hawaiian Fried Rice that incorporates unexpected ingredients like raisins. For those of you who are already loyal followers of Rain, there are recent new additions to their already gracious tradition of starting each guest with a complimentary ginger salad and even creating their home-made desserts from scratch like their decadent Coconut Cake. They now sport 8-dollar Bento lunch specials and always host a plethora of 5-dollar cocktail specials from Monday to Thursday.
diabetes, chronic inflammatory problems, and others due to the disturbance of the immune system caused by the HIV virus. Thus, it is much more convenient and economical to utilize this Atlanta-based medical practice than running around town visiting different specialists. How do you suspect if you have been recently infected? Due to the inevitable process of acute seroconversion following infection, the virus commonly manifests itself through low-grade fevers, swollen lymph nodes, and visible rashes on portions of the body. But of course, for those hypochondriacs out there, sometimes a cold is just a cold. Give your anxiety a break, and just go for a routine test.
2 oz. Light Rum 2 oz. Dark Rum 4 oz. Pineapple Juice Splash of Grenadine Here is a refreshing drink recipe to spice up your next party’s bar menu with the tropical flavors of Thailand. Through the combination of contrasting rums, the result supports that old saying of, “opposites really do attract.” The light rum adds depth to the drink while the dark rum polishes it with a smooth spice. With such an unstoppable duo, adding pineapple juice will instantly take you back to Bangkok, sucking in delight.
But if your intuition and rationality gives you a roll of the eyes when you contemplate “a possible exposure,” there is the homosexual equivalence of the Plan-B treatment that you can obtain through any doctor that deals with HIV-related issues. It’s called the Post-Exposure Prophylaxis which highly reduces the risk of the virus’s integration into the body’s DNA. It typically works best within 72 hours after the time period of “possible exposure.” And yes, we all have heard the myth that bottoms are much more at risk than the top and we all think, “Well if I pull out before climaxing, there’s no way I can get infected.” Yes, there is truth that no infection will occur if there is no contact between the bodily fluids involved, but just like gambling at Vegas, sometimes you win some, and sometimes you lose some.

WTF!?!?
What I’ve Learned Since Becoming an Adult
V
apidity is not a desirable quality.
This is a notion I wish more people would realize. Remember when Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey had their own reality show, Newlyweds, where we first learned that the former is a complete moron? But then girls and gay guys basically aspired to be dumb because everyone thought it was a cute look on her? I’ll admit it was a cute look on her in my 14-year-old mind, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve found that it’s probably the single biggest turn-off a person could have. Looking back, it wasn’t an appealing quality in her, and it’s even less endearing when you’re not a stacked, blonde pop star with a hot husband. You would think this kind of illogic would wear away as people get older, but apparently it doesn’t in everyone. If that were the case, why don’t people worship thinkers like Christopher Hitchens or Søren Kierkegaard instead of glorified porn stars like Kim Kardashian? Hell, we’re even voting idiots who don’t believe in things like global warming into positions of power. Uncut penises are kind of neat. I might be alone on this one, but I used to be completely weirded out by uncut penises. I think part of it was that I had a friend as a teenager who was uncut and he could do this “trick” where he was pull his foreskin over the end of a straw, blow into the opposite end, and inflate it. Now, though, uncut penises are kind of a fetish. I think the transition came when I learned that every European boy has an uncut penis. I couldn’t salvage turning a sexy European trick just because of a little extra skin… so I basically got over my foreskin hang-up to enable me to be a bigger slut.
Money isn’t that important. In my twink days, my only requirements in guys were really good looks and a fat wallet. What my twink logic didn’t tell me is that all too often, these two qualities don’t come in the same package, at least not among those guys who would actually want a twinky boyfriend to pay for. Generally, in a partner, we want an equal, meaning financially prolific guys want a financially bountiful boyfriend. When you’re in a relationship where the money is basically one-sided, money becomes a source of control on the part of the person making the money, or at least that’s what I’ve experienced. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized a fun, fulfilling life filled with memorable experiences is much more valuable than tangible currency. Ignorance is bliss. As a Political Science major, I find myself constantly engrossed in national and world politics, not even as a part of my job, but even as a hobby. This pastime has taught me though that maybe it really is just best to be a complete moron. Cretins aren’t concerned with the world around them, because it barely exists in their own minds. I’d much rather be concerning myself with how my hair looked today or where my besties and I were going for the weekend than gay rights or foreign military intervention, but unfortunately I’m not the type of person who can be that selfinvolved (damn it!). My parents were right. About everything. by Lucas Witherspoon

For the Boy Next Door Exclusive Lines, Community Love
S
by Elijah Sarkesian
ince 1980, Boy Next Door Menswear has grown into one of the most notable clothing establishments in Atlanta. Providing a wide range of clothing from trendy designers and international brands, Boy Next Door is often Atlanta’s exclusive home for new men’s fashion. The locally owned business is still in its original location on Piedmont Avenue over thirty years after opening, though it’s taken up more space in the area since its early days. According to store manager Ray Dowis, “We’re one of the original gay establishments in Atlanta, just like Backstreet and some of the others that have long since closed, even though they were clubs. When it comes to original gay establishments from the very beginnings of gay culture in Atlanta, that’s where this store comes from. A lot of people, especially the younger generations, don’t know this.”
A Unique Market Presence Something else Atlantans might not know is how Boy Next Door selects their product line. Boy Next Door has a lengthy history of obtaining brands like Diesel before they’re widely known. Dowis cites the long-term success of the store, as well as its higher-end clientele, as reasons for Boy Next Door’s success in getting exclusive deals with various vendors. “When it comes to buying and competition, we work with the same people that Barneys New York and Neiman Marcus do. Because of [our]

long-term history and establishment in Atlanta …when we approach vendors to purchase merchandise …they treat us as if we have equal buying power with Neiman Marcus… They give us exclusivity of products that they will not even sell to Neiman Marcus or to companies like that because they realize that the niche that we have here is good for their company, good for their market. So for them to make us the only company that has this particular color, style, or fit in product, it works for them.” With exclusive products, though, comes a unique
set of issues. Many of the store’s items have limited production runs that may be exclusive to Boy Next Door and a handful of other stores across the country. “Customers will see that we have limited sizes. When we buy, we don’t buy items and products that are extremely readily available, even to places like Macy’s. We buy products [from vendors] that they will only give us exclusive rights for, whether it’s in the southeast or just for us, or we’ll buy ‘limited cuts.’ We’ll buy products that they don’t put in their normal collection. They’ve offered it as a design, and they’ll tell us, ‘We’ll make this product.’ So we’ll go in – say, us and a boutique in San Francisco or Boystown – we’ll all go in and order two or three sizes each of that particular product. They’ll make that item, and then they’ll never make it again. That’s why we can’t get more sizes of a medium or a large when people ask ‘Do you have more sizes in the back?’ We can’t just call them and say, ‘Hey, we want more mediums and smalls of this red,’ because it doesn’t exist. They won’t make it again. You can’t get it.” Their exclusivity also factors into the prices customers will find at Boy Next Door, which Dowis believes still offer a great value to his clientele. “The products we offer are very limited – you can’t go to Macy’s or Neiman and buy the product. You may be able to go online, but you’re going to spend more, even in that case. And it’s not going to be the same color, and that’s one of david atlanta | 23

the major differences in the product and what we offer in our store.
is Lost-n-Found Youth, through a number of methods.
“Because of those things, we actually pay more for the product. But when you work out the value equation of what you’re paying for exclusivity and the quality of the products we carry, you’re getting a much better deal here than you would get at a Macy’s or even a Neiman Marcus on some of the items.”
“Everything from the Big Gay Game Show to running sales in our store in which we donate to the charity,” says Dowis. “For instance, we’ll have a 30%-off sale in the store, and in order to get that 30% discount on products, you have to give a minimum $1 cash donation to the charity. And any time we get a donation like that, we have a donation box on the counters. We give that money – there’s no middleman. It goes directly to the charity that we support.”
The exclusivity also contributes to an issue Boy Next Door wants to resolve, such as offering products to a wider variety of customers – in some cases, literally. “We don’t have sizes to fit the bears. They might want to wear bigger sizes of clothing, and that’s one of the major reasons why, many of these vendors simply don’t make sizes. Even to get an extra-large is like pulling teeth. So we’ve really been reaching out to and challenging our vendors, to help us to accommodate this, so we can expand our sizes and produces sizes going all the way up to, say, 3XL. That’s also one of the things we’re working on as we go to market and challenging vendors to provide to us. “It’s been a challenge to us, because we could go out there and buy a whole bunch of dress shirts and things in big sizes that would be just as boring and lacking in quality as you’d find in local big and tall shops, or we can take our time and find vendors that will provide those sizes, but in current styles and trends that will make members of the bear community want to wear them even more. It’s a process, and it’s actually been more of a challenge than we realized, but it is on our priority list.”
Community Involvement On top of being a highly successful business, Boy Next Door is also known for being a prominent member of the community. Boy Next Door invests heavily in the community through participation in events like Atlanta Pride, various sponsorships and charitable contributions. Among the newer charities receiving support from Boy Next Door
Boy Next Door’s charitable reach extends beyond the gay community into the broader Atlanta community. One of the newest charities receiving support from the company focuses on Atlantaarea

children. The organization – Christmas, Cops and Kids – is an effort from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department and the Atlanta Police Department that collects money to purchase clothing and school supplies for local children living in shelters. Even events produced by Boy Next Door, such as their fashion shows, have a charitable aim. “We do fashion shows to try and add entertainment value to the community,” says Dowis. “A lot of these things that we do come out of the Boy Next Door’s pockets directly. We’re not getting any other support, and the boys who work here are often doing it on their own time. When we’re doing things like that, it’s all volunteer across the board, or it’s covered by the Boy Next Door itself.”
Planning for Expanding Even with over thirty years of success, Boy Next Door has no intention of resting on its laurels. The store is looking to expand its business footprint through a few different methods. The first priority is launching an all-new website, according to Dowis. “We’re very close to offering and flipping the switch on with a full-fledged e-commerce site, where customers will be able to ship anywhere in the United States. We’re trying to find a way to still keep our exclusivity in products and offer a great selection to the customers.” Once the website launches, which Dowis expects could happen within a few weeks, the store will turn its focus onto expanding its physical presence. Dowis admits, though, that the process of opening additional physical locations has its own challenges. “We’re looking at opening additional locations not only within our community, but we’re looking at communities surrounding us. We’ve actually been readily walking real estate, and we are looking for affordable real estate for growth. That’s one of the major issues the Boy Next Door has had; in spite of the empty real estate in many parts of many different communities, even though the pieces of
real estate may have been sitting there empty for years, the amount that they want for these spaces for a community-oriented company like us to go in there and be successful is just absurd.” Still, Dowis believes that the store’s current model is the way to go. “We could be stupid and go in there and blow all this money and get loans and be financially irresponsible, hoping that it’s going to be successful, or we could go the direction we’ve been going and give that money back to the community until we find the right fit.” david atlanta | 27

Baton Bob Twirls His Baton Again
B
by Joseph Brownell
ob Jamerson affectionately refers to his alter ego Baton Bob as The Ambassador of Mirth. Mirth may be an uncommon word in most of our vocabularies but anyone from St. Louis to Atlanta that’s had the pleasure of Baton Bob’s performances knows he’s an uncommon man. At an early age, Jamerson was enamored with the halftime shows of college football games. Forget the football players and cheerleaders, he loved watching a baton soar effortlessly through the air. Little did he know that his childhood fantasies would result in a lifelong reality that would bring joy to others. Jamerson taught himself how to twirl a baton through visualization and imitation. “It immediately became a favorite hobby,” Jamerson beamed. But like all hobbies real life must take precedence. Prior to becoming an Atlanta transplant, Jamerson called St. Louis, Missouri home. There he managed and owned a successful floral business that he was able to run in tandem with his work as a flight attendant for Trans World Airlines. For over a decade, Jamerson maintained his floral business and flight career, but like most
40 | davidatlanta
of America, Jamerson was affected by the 9/11 tragedy. Jamerson found himself laid off from TWA following 9/11 but instead of wallowing in depression, he reached back into his life for a golden nugget of advice. “In 1996, I reached out to a therapist to deal with some personal issues,” Jamerson confessed. “In one particular session with my therapist, he suggested an antidote for depression. He said ‘the next time you feel yourself slipping into a depressed state of mind, go do something you know for sure makes you feel good’.” What made Jamerson feel good? He mined his childhood ambition and reached back into the closet and pulled out his trusty baton. The baton that had never let him down as a child was sure to help him move past this stage of his adult life. When Jamerson tossed that baton into the air for the first time, he was not only trying to move past that stage of his life but create a new one. “Laughter is our natural universal healing gas,” Jamerson exclaimed. In order to induce laughter during a bleak period of time, Jamerson took his baton and in the winter of 2011 decided to costume himself in order to help himself and others make it through the holidays.
Baton Bob was born. A penchant for costumes (admittedly his favorite being wedding dresses), Baton Bob hit the streets in St. Louis. After a few years of performing in St. Louis, Jamerson was assaulted. After weighing his options in light of his newfound celebrity, Jamerson relocated to Atlanta in 2005. Jamerson took to the streets of Midtown, whistle in mouth, donning outrageous costumes, letting his baton soar through the sky and Atlanta welcomed him with open arms. He graced the cover of Atlanta publications including Creative Loafing and was named Best Street Character year after year in their annual Best-of issue. After years of performing, Baton Bob went missing from Atlanta’s streets. Jamerson underwent some family drama and “had to save his mother from the clutches of an evil heifer”. His father’s aversion to homosexuality resulted in his parents being moved without his knowledge. Jamerson fought tooth and nail to restore his parents to their home but his father passed away during the battle. With his mother back in her home, Jamerson undertook his persona once again, hitting the streets in full force. This Friday (August 10th), Jamerson brings his one-man show The Myrtle Hat Tour to Park Tavern. Despite a recent minor setback in which Jamerson was verbally threatened while performing as Baton Bob (he declined to comment on the issue due to his renewed fame and commitments), Jamerson is hoping to shed light on Bob Jamerson as a person and the birth of Baton Bob. One thing is for sure- whether you know the definition of mirth, Baton Bob’s show is guaranteed to leave a smile plastered across your face. Baton Bob is scheduled to perform the first show of his Myrtle Hat Tour Friday August 10th at the Park Tavern. You can purchase tickets online. Visit batonbob.weebly.com for more information and to purchase your tickets today.
Missy Higgins The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle
She almost walked away from music altogether, but good thing Missy Higgins changed her mind: The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle takes the Aussie out of her sad-girl-with-piano comfort zone and into newfound greatness. Releasing five years after her second album, On a Clear Night, spawned the heartbreaking hit “Where I Stood,” this one has Higgins stepping up her game, going jazzy on the whistle-worthy ear-magnet “Hello Hello,” her confrontation with a fair-weather friend, and taking the blues route for the sultry soul song “Watering Hole.” Country also runs through “If I’m Honest,” a cute little ditty about an inimitable lover; an instrumental smorgasbord is the foundation of “Set Me on Fire,” a piano-riffing pseudo-pop jingle that has her harmonizing with herself – proof that two Missy Higgins are better than one. “Everyone’s Waiting” is so good – an etherealized stunner about following your heart that reaches a lovely climax – it’s already being used in a Revenge promo. And the built-likeColdplay “Hidden Ones” is an underdog anthem that sticks with you. Higgins’ power on the soul is also in full effect: “Cooling of the Embers” is a profound look at death in its final moments, while “Sweet Arms of a Tune” cuts away from “razzledazzle” for a simple lovelorn downer. Higgins is back, and where she stood doesn’t matter. That she’s still standing does.

Hear Me Out
Marina & the Diamonds Electra Heart
Marina Diamandis made it clear she wasn’t pleased that her debut The Family Jewels, released to astounding buzz in early 2010, didn’t make her a pop star. That explains her latest LP, a deliberate balancing act that wants to impress radio programmers and emo hipsters – even flaunting her “big ego” and making it known on the swaggering opener, “Bubblegum Bitch”: “Here I come, straight to No. 1.” She may not get that far, but that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t. The Welsh-born songstress taps Dr. Luke and Greg Kurstin for Electra Heart and turns out songs that sometimes make her sound like the second coming of Katy Perry (their voices could seriously ghost each other). But as far as girl drama goes, both “Lies” and “Homewrecker” have more hook than Perry’s “Wide Awake.” Where Marina distinguishes herself is personality: She sarcastically – though perhaps somewhat earnestly – riffs on the dangerous fate of child stars with “Teen Idle,” easily the album’s standout (her muse, Marilyn Monroe, comes into clear focus). Here, her voice flutters into a high register that’s both haunting and tragically vulnerable. Between that and her feminist approach to the deluxe edition’s “Sex Yeah,” parts of the album’s last – and much better – half could almost be a response to pop stars like Perry. “No room for imagining,” she criticizes, “’cause everyone’s seen everything.” Take that, boob bazookas.

Starlet talks big gay following, slutty second self, and how Britney Spears inspired her new album
W
by Chris Azzopardi
ith that trademark heart on her cheek and songs that boom with chirpy beats, Marina Diamandis (aka Marina and the Diamonds) appears to have walked out of a Saturday morning cartoon. Except she’s not that innocent. The persona the Welsh-born Londoner presents with Electra Heart, the follow-up to her debut, The Family Jewels, is a prissy, sinfully sexual diva who aspires to be a “bottle blonde.” In our interview, Marina and the Diamonds chatted about how the character has more to do with her than you think, being the “only gay in the village” and not talking about the dirty title pun of her first album … until now.
I don’t know if you’ve heard, but some of your fans are gay. (Laughs) About 97 percent of my shows’ audience! It’s so fantastic. Truthfully, I’d say 60 percent gay, 40 percent teen girls. And 2 percent 50-year-old creepy man in the back!
When did your relationship start with gay fans? On the first album I definitely did have a gay fan
44 | davidatlanta
base, but it was much smaller, because I’m a very flamboyant character and the shows are really theatrical. But I don’t really talk about the whole gay community thing, because I don’t want to be a cliché pop star saying like, “I love my gays!” But the truth is it’s a really supportive fan base and they’re making this tour so special.
How about just going the bisexual route? That’s on the way! (Laughs)
What was the gay scene like where you’re from in Wales? Are you joking? I lived in a village of 200 people! (Laughs) I didn’t really see any kind of gay scene until I moved to London when I was 19. I was the only gay in the village!
You’ve said that you relate to your gay fans, and obviously they relate back to you. Can you talk about that? Again, I think it’s part of the camp nature of my first (album), but I think with this album in particular, it lends itself to that more. On a lyrical level, with the first album I wrote a lot about feeling like an outsider and like I wasn’t accepted for who I was, and that upset me very much – so perhaps that’s why. If you’ve dealt with discrimination in your life, you probably really connect to some of those feelings. Also, on this album, a lot of the humor has really caught the gay community’s attention. You’re very humorous.
As far as the whole cartoon persona goes, do you think your gay audience appreciates your
Photos by Caspar Balslev
flamboyant look and fashion more than your mainstream audience? No, but gay people pick up on things a little bit quicker and sense stuff that is potentially underground or quite cultish and is going to become bigger before a mainstream audience will. But everyone likes a pretty picture.
What was your reaction to seeing Cazwell and Amanda Lepore do a video for “Primadonna”? Oh my god, I died! I love Amanda Lepore so much. I was just like, “Is this real?” Because Amanda Lepore really isn’t real, obviously. I actually love Amanda Lepore so much. I listen to her quite a lot. There’s a song called “Cotton Candy” and it’s just fantastic.
Have you seen a drag queen do one of your songs before? I haven’t … yet.
What tips do you have for Marina drag queens? You have to have gigantic roots, paint the heart on your face with some eyeliner and then cut a strip of lashes from MAC and put four on each lower lash. Then use a nice bubblegum pink lipstick.
Tell me you named the first album The Family Jewels because of the pun. That was the sole reason for it. But I was so lilywhite skinned that when I began I absolutely couldn’t admit it to the press in case my family heard or my dad heard and thought, “How rude! You can’t be making those dirty puns.” So I never really explained the meaning of it, but I just quite liked that my album title was basically bollocks.
After the first album was released, you admitted to being bummed that it didn’t live up to your expectations commercially. What were your expectations with The Family Jewels, and are you feeling more positive about Electra Heart? Looking back on all of those interviews from that era, I look like I’m on the edge of a nervous breakdown. (Laughs) So I think that might have influenced my promotional duties at the time. I was really stuck in a rut, and I think I was ambitiously disappointed. 46 | davidatlanta
It wasn’t that it didn’t do well. Looking back, I can’t actually believe that I sold that many records on an album that was pretty alternative except for two of the songs. I guess I am really ambitious and I want to be one of the greats – and there’s nothing wrong with being honest about that. With this album, I didn’t really have any of those expectations. I’ve let go of a lot of that baggage while writing the album. I’ve just changed my perspective completely.
When did you realize that you wanted to be famous? I didn’t really interpret it in that way. At 9 or 10 years old, I knew from the bottom of my heart I was going to be an entertainer, in that I wanted to perform in some way – but I didn’t really know if I would be dancer or an actress. I definitely didn’t really think about being a singer until 15, and then I knew what I was going to do with my life.
Fame and the media’s effect on us come up a lot in your songs. Why are you so interested in exploring those topics? To be honest, it’s less about fame and more about praise and performance. If you look at all of the lyrical themes that are connected with that subject, it’s more about theatrical terms – like primadonna or the starring role in theater – so it’s not about being famous or being known. It’s more about feeling like you’re No. 1. I was in a relationship where I felt like I was second best and I just thought, ‘I’m not going to stick around.’ I was completely in love with him, but I just walked away. You’re the only person who can look out for you, and no one should really settle for second best. It almost seems like it’s an obnoxious thing to say for some reason. But I don’t think it is. (Laughs)
Who inspired “Teen Idle”? Did you have any one in mind for that song or the album? There’s a bit of Brit-Brit on the album. I mean, “Bubblegum Bitch” is basically Britney Spears peeled inside out. Britney is our teen idol, so that’s what we all relate that term with. It’s just so strange how everyone relates to that song
(“Teen Idle”) – that’s been the biggest shock of the album, and I’m so happy about that.
You didn’t expect that? No, I just thought the lyrics were too specific and obscure. But that’s the nicest surprise as a writer sometimes, when people come to you and you realize that everyone just goes through the same shit in one way or another.
You were looking to Marilyn Monroe and Marie Antoinette for this album, too. How did they work into it? That was more of a visual thing. I’ve been looking for people who have always been portrayed with a certain duality to them in public. I’m really interested in that for some reason. I think villains are interesting. I wanted Electra Heart to have a villainous side to her.
Electra Heart is an alter ego? I don’t know. I always think “alter ego” means something completely different. I think it’s a character that I formulated in order to be able to talk about things that I was too embarrassed to talk about.
How much of that character is actually you? Quite a lot. It has to be. If you made it, then it’s real. If you’ve created it, it has to come from somewhere. I think people make stories up, but it has to evolve from some truth somewhere along the lines. It’s just like “Primadonna” – there are parts of my personality that are like that. I am kind of precocious, but it’s not exactly something that you would market yourself as being, because it’s not a very likable character. Maybe Electra Heart allows me to act or to write in a certain way and to write about universal truths.
Without seeming too narcissistic? Exactly. Because “Primadonna” is a fun song, and people see the irony in it but also the truth: that we all know sometimes we can be like that or we know someone who can be.
Is Electra Heart more sexually adventurous than you? Would she have a lesbian encounter? (Laughs) No, I don’t think she would. But I do portray her as a bit slutty, and I don’t really know why! Maybe I’m trying to live through her because I’ve never been one-night stand-y… I’m a stage mom trying to live through her daughter. david atlanta | 47
What a Girl Wants
…To Party! by Rian Ashlei With summer pride festivals fizzling out, the hot line up for fall pride is coming underway. Atlanta has two sensational prides in the fall: Pure Heat Community Festival and Atlanta Pride.
Pure Heat Community Festival 2012: August 29- September 3 The Pure Heat Community Festival is an annual event put on by the premier party promotions company in the Southeast for the gays, Traxx Girls, Inc. I’ve been attending Traxx Girls parties since 2006. Now that’s loyalty! But it’s worth it. They have the largest lesbian Pride party in the country each year at their notorious Freight Depot party in Underground Atlanta. The entertainment line-ups are always extraordinary featuring the likes of Nicki Minaj and Brandy. This years’ big hitter has not been announced yet but my heart was still happy to hear that super sultry-voiced R&B singer Elle Varner and my most beloved reality star, Joseline Hernandez of Love and Hip Hop ATL will be amongst the Labor Day weekend celebs.
Just remember, the notoriety means things sell out fast. I learned that the hard way last year when I wanted to attend the Booze Cruise on Lake Lanier and couldn’t go. Sold out! The host hotel, Melia, has been sold out for weeks and now bookings for the Loews hotel are open. Their work with The Vision Community Foundation throughout the weekend promotes HIV/AIDS awareness in minority communities and during the festival, dozens of opportunities to learn, commune and get educated and tested are given to attendees.
Atlanta Pride Festival 2012: October 13-14, 2012 The more renowned Atlanta Pride Festival, which draws crowds of hundreds of thousands, was my first introduction into gay life. I can remember walking into the park and being overwhelmed by the energy and happiness of “my people.” That sensation has certainly not died down with each passing year, except when they were at the Civic Center. Lucky for us they have since returned home to Piedmont Park. Praise Jesus. The host hotel for Atlanta Pride is W Midtown, one of my favorite Starwood properties in Atlanta. With the sleek design and phenomenal location, you can be minutes away from all the action at Piedmont, the primary location for all festival happenings. There’s a kick off party at The Georgia Aquarium, a car and motorcycle show, the Dyke and Trans marches and of course the super thrilling, Delta sponsored, Pride Parade. I look forward to wandering around the Pride Marketplace and ogling all the hot young bunnies who have flown in to celebrate their colors in the south. For up-to-the-minute information on Pure Heat, visit www. atlantaprideweekend.com or follow @TraxxGirls on Twitter. ticking with your workouts and eating balanced meals during back-to-school chaos can seem impossible. Schedules are packed with homework and exams and you can now hide the extra poundage under cute jackets and sweaters. So what’s the point? “I would never recommend anyone to stop exercising,” says fitness guru Scott Herman. “There is no reason, even if your day is packed with classes, why you can’t stretch, eat correctly, and carve thirty or forty minutes out of your day to lift weights or go for a quick jog. You want to avoid the dreaded freshman fifteen at all costs. Also, exercise jumpstarts your day, makes you feel good and
helps you to focus and think clearly. It may even help you get that A in Algebra.” Learn your lesson before its too late. Continuing to move and eat right now will make it easier to keep slim and defined for the long term.
Fitness Plan
Herman offers his lesson plan to help you build muscle, lose fat, and reach your fitness goals this semester. LESSON #1: Don’t stop now. Reaching fitness goals requires determination and that determination quickly fades away if you are already looking for the first break. Stick to your routine. Period. LESSON #2: If your goal is to gain muscle, don’t worry so much about how much weight you are lifting. TUT (Time Under Tension) is the most important variable. Setting the right tempo will ensure that your muscles are under enough strain to spark growth. A tempo of 2-2-4 is a great place to start; ten reps per set; three sets per exercise.
david atlanta | 51
LESSON #3: You don’t have to crank up the MPH on the treadmill to achieve an amazing cardio session. You can also play with the incline to give yourself a more intense workout at a lower MPH. Try twenty minutes of cardio with 5% incline at around 3-6MPH. You won’t believe how great you feel after those twenty intense minutes. LESSON #4: If your goal is to lose fat, you need to focus on more than just cardio. You want to be total body training. Compound exercises like jump squats, burpees, and mountain climbing will engage multiple muscles at once for a higher calorie burn in a shorter amount of time. LESSON #5: Eating is super important when it comes to reaching a goal. You need to make sure that you are consuming the right amount of macronutrients (protein, carbs, and fat) a day so that your body can recover and grow. Even on rest days, you need to be eating all of your macros.

Nutrition Plan
Coach Marc Montemerlo stars on Dr. Drew’s daytime television show Lifechangers. He says, “if you want to achieve real, long lasting results, you need to tackle mental weakness as well.” That includes smoking, drinking, and overeating. Here is his lesson plan for achieving your goals through nutrition. LESSON #1: We need to move away from the 3 meals a day mentality. That’s old school thinking. Eat at least six quality small meals per day. Eating more meals per day increases the body’s metabolism, gives you a constant flow of energy and reduces the likelihood of your body storing food as fat. LESSON #2: Eat protein and complex carbohydrates in every meal. You don’t have to eat a lot, but try to get about thirty grams of protein and some quality carbs in each meal. Good carbs include whole grains, oats, brown rice and whole meal bread. Good sources of protein are chicken, egg whites, tuna, red meat and fish.
LESSON #3: Avoid simple carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are found in sugar, soft drinks and honey. Simple carbohydrates give you an instant pick-me-up but they will drop you right back where you came from after a few minutes. Excessive sugar plays havoc with insulin metabolism and leads to fatigue and fat storage. LESSON #4: Drink water, and loads of it! The most important nutrient in your body is water. The quality of your tissues, their performance and their resistance to injury is dependent on the amount of water you drink. Make it a habit to sip water constantly throughout the day, especially during a workout. LESSON #5: Avoid snacking by planning your meals the day before. Most snack foods are unhealthy and full of sugar, salt and other unnatural ingredients. If you plan your day’s diet, you will be less likely to cheat. FairyScopes
ARIES (March 20 – April 19): You can hardly help but to push too hard. Hitting a limit in your efforts with your partner (at home or at work) will help you clarify your capacities. It can also be a make-or-break time for the partnership.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20): The longer you keep smoothing things over at home, the bigger it will backfire. Resentments and anger will come out so face them squarely and deal with them. It’s not so bad. With forthright honesty it can actually work out very well. GEMINI (May 21- June 20): With your ruler Mercury turning direct, expect everything you’ve been wanting to say to be heard. So will a lot that you wanted to keep under wraps. You think you can handle the fall out yourself, but you really do want some help! CANCER (June 21- July 22): As much as your dreams do come true, resist the impulse to fret over those that don’t. Be mature and constructive with what you have. There’s a difference between dedication and stubbornness. Focus on your long-range goals. LEO (July 23 – August 22): Friends mean well with their promises. Try to be kind and forgiving when they don’t come through. Perhaps, just maybe you were expecting more than they were offering? Be careful not to reveal sexual secrets, unless you want to create some more. VIRGO (August 23 – September 22): Worries that have been lurking in the back of your mind are moving to your mouth. For your own sake, and everyone else’s, be careful who you share that with. Conversations with your partner can open up problems that need work. Roll up your sleeves!
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22): The velvet glove isn’t fooling anyone. Everyone sees your iron fist. Go easy on yourself and everyone around you. A long, deep heart-to-heart with a trusted friend, or even a therapist, can get you back in balance. SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21): Life feels like trying to win the Indy 500 with your parking brake on. If you let it, the tension will only get worse and worse. Consult with a spiritual (or psychological) authority. You really need to work hard on letting go. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20): There will always be a part of you that wants to be somewhere else. Don’t let that stop you from settling in with the one you love. Partnership is an adventure that will test you, push you and teach you more than world travel. CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19): You’re pushing ahead harder in your endeavors, but something’s holding you back. Distinguish between necessary structure and dead weight. Advice from your partner could make life easier. Don’t be too proud to listen! AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18): Don’t get ahead of yourself. You can master the great ideas, but you need to start from the basics. That might mean reviewing what you think you know and finding new approaches. PISCES (February 19 – March 19): Recent problems can feel overwhelming, but answers and order will come soon. Intuition is a better friend than logic, although you do need both. Just keep asking yourself: What’s the mature, responsible thing to do?

Love Boat: who is this salt and pepper gentleman with glasses behind the bar at the Vortex? (Hands off typical gay Atlanta!) $5 on a $92 tab is not a good tip, and your note about how excellent the service was makes you look like an even bigger douche.
You’re so full of yourself; you may as well have cum up your own ass. listen racist jerkwad, assuming that a picture of a Black guy means something is for Black guys only... makes about as much sense as assuming that a movie starring a white guy (wait isn’t that like 95% of them?) is for white men only. If you’re 36, then maybe you should consider changing your A4A screen name from “boy,” especially if you’re not into leather.
So lack of grammar is in this year? Example, me and my friend, k, sup, etc. WTF…crap, now I’m going it!
Saying that you’re not anti-gay just because you’re against gay marriage is like saying you’re not racist just because you’re against interracial marriage. My stance on homosexuality is bowlegged by morning.
I want the Olympics to be more like The Hunger Games + televised orgies. Hey Dan Cathy – Jesus never said anything about gays. You need to open your bible before you open your mouth.
I’m not sure what’s so Christian about standing up for homophobia. NOTE: Opinions expressed are those of the readers and do not reflect the opinions of David magazine.
