WTF!?!? Tidbits In Christopher Anderson’s (noted biographer of Michael Jackson and Princess Diana) new unofficial biography, MICK: The Wild Life and Mad Genius of Jagger, he drudges up the long-held claim that Mick Jagger and David Bowie were hooking up with each other in the 70s, furthering the rumor by saying they were “really sexually obsessed with each other.” You mean to tell me that two men known for their glamour, love of sequins and rhinestones, and admitted bisexuality have possibly fooled around? Any other glaring signs I should know about (besides their 80s cover of “Dancing in the Street”)? Nicki Minaj allegedly demanded the grass outside her dressing room at a Scottish music festival be cut shorter, reportedly “[stropping], pouting and pointing” about while asking for someone who could cut it. A fellow performer at the festival, Frank Turner, tweeted: “You can (I suppose) be a d**k to your own crew, you’re paying them. But everyone else? Not to mention the people out front. Ugh. […] To clarify: Nicki Minaj has been a selfish s***head to all the hard-working crew backstage… Pathetic. F**k off.” You may be able to get away with this shit if you’re, say, Barbra Streisand, but when you’ve really only been known to the mainstream for two years… I think she should focus on not cutting her career short with her absurd behavior rather than a patch of grass. Just in case you were curious, Jane Fonda tells The Sun, “At 74, I
have never had such a fulfilling sex life.” To be fair, though, have you seen Jane Fonda lately? Even I would hit that. More power to you, girl.
Pauline Potter, officially the fattest woman in the world at 728 pounds, according
to the Guiness Book of World Records, a record she accepted in the hopes the public shame would convince her to lose weight. That didn’t work out so well, as Pauline—who eats 10,000+ calories a day and whose legs weigh more than 140 pounds each (EACH)—kept consuming typical meals of “four bowls of cereal for breakfast, half a box of cookies and a bag of crisps with cheese as a mid-morning snack, a Big Mac with chicken nuggets and fries [for lunch], then three portions of spaghetti Bolognese for dinner, followed by a pint of ice cream.” But Pauline found renewed hope when she reignited with her ex-husband of three years, Alex, and they began actively having sex, which she claims can happen as frequently as seven times per day burns up to 500 calories a session. Alex says it’s “hard to position her and find her pleasure spots as she has a lot of fat in the pelvic area. But it turns me on knowing she’s satisfied. Although once, when she got on top, I couldn’t breathe.” Not since Paris and Helena have I heard such a story of passion and romance. But seriously, when sex is becoming a death-bysuffocation hazard, it’s really time to reevaluate your life. — Lucas Witherspoon 8 | david atlanta

Joining Hearts celebrates 25 years of goodwill
Weekend includes Heretic Kickoff, Piedmont Pool Party, Jungle Closing Party
W
by Elijah Sarkesian
hat’s better than spending a warm summer day alongside a cool pool while surrounded by hot guys? How about if doing so also meant helping people living with HIV/AIDS? That’s exactly what Joining Hearts hopes to accomplish with their Main Event, an annual pool party that hits the 25-year mark with the organization’s July 21 event at Piedmont Park. After last year’s event raised over $180,000 – $30,000 above the fundraising goal – Joining Hearts is raising the bar with this year’s goal, a lofty $250,000. The organization is well on its way to meeting the goal. General admission tickets for the event have completely sold out, and while VIP tickets were still available at press time, those will likely be gone by the time of the event. So what can guests expect? For starters, attendees will experience music from two of Joining Hearts’ most popular DJs from prior years. Opening the day is Don Bishop, a mainstay of some of the earliest Joining Hearts pool parties. Bishop will be playing music ranging from the 80s to 2000. Current music hits will also be heard fall to the event’s other DJ, Roland Belmares. Belmares is also a prominent DJ from previous Joining Hearts events, as well as one of the favorites of attendees of years past. Additional sources of funding come from event sponsors and patrons. Among the corporate sponsors of Main Event is Delta Air Lines, which first connected with the organization last year. At this year’s event, Delta flight attendants will serve cocktails in the VIP lounge, with their tips going to Joining Hearts. The W Midtown is another corporate sponsor that will have a heightened presence. On July 20, the Spice Market in the W will have a special benefit going on during its dinner service. A donation of 50% of all proceeds from the evening will be
donated to Joining Hearts. A pair of parties bookend the Main Event. First up is the Official Kickoff Party at the Heretic Friday night. For this event, the Heretic is bringing back DJ Joe Gauthreaux, who also played the Heretic’s kickoff party last year. Gauthreaux makes multiple appearances at the Heretic throughout the year, and he’s excited to return. “The crowd there is so amazing!” says Gauthreaux. “It always feels like family when I walk in there – I think that’s what makes playing there so special.” A portion of the cover from the Heretic will go to Joining Hearts. Doors open at 9 p.m., with the opening set from DJ Lydia Prim kicking things off at 10 p.m. Following Joining Hearts 25 is the Closing Party at Jungle. The doors open at 10 p.m. with Tony Moran returning to Atlanta to DJ the event. Joining Hearts raises funds throughout the year to directly benefit two organizations, AID Atlanta and Jerusalem House. AID Atlanta is the largest organization that provides services relating to HIV/ AIDS in the Atlanta area, while Jerusalem House is the largest provider of housing for homeless and low-income persons affected by HIV/AIDS. AID Atlanta Development Director Jon Santos, who’s currently serving as the organization’s co-interim executive director, believes that Joining Hearts provides an unparalleled level of service to his organization and the Atlanta community at large. “For 25 years AID Atlanta has been truly honored to be a beneficiary of Joining Hearts efforts to create a home. It is so great for us to see large groups of the Atlanta community gather together at a Joining Hearts event, and know that all of these people are having a great time and supporting AID Atlanta and Jerusalem House,” says Santos. “No other organization provides the housing assistance that Joining Hearts provides, and their efforts over the past twenty-five years has helped thousands of people. All of us at AID Atlanta are proud to build this loving community with our friends and allies at Joining Hearts and we wish them much continued success.” david atlanta | 15
ATL Trout Swimmer Heidi Hatteberg Strives for an Olympic Spot by Joseph Brownell There’s a marked difference between dreaming big and having Olympic-sized dreams. Atlanta transplant Heidi Hatteberg is flying high having just competed in her second Olympic Trial, but Olympic-sized dreams don’t always start that big. Hatteberg began swimming when she was 3 years old. “In Texas we lived right next door to a pool and I just loved swimming and playing with my sisters,” she shared. “When I was 6, we moved to Kentucky and I jumped right into competitive swimming.” While Hatteberg admits she has a competitive streak, she wasn’t initially convinced that the pool provided her path for life. “It would be a dream to be an athlete, but my athletic ability wouldn’t always be there and is often much more short-lived than my mind,” she explained. So when people asked Hatteberg what she wanted to be when she grew up she replied “pilot.” After being recruited by Georgia Tech, Hatteberg pursued an aerospace engineering degree. By that time though the dream of becoming a pilot had been grounded and swimming became her direction. “When I was 16 my coach at the time presented the idea of Olympic Trials to me . . . from [that moment], I was hooked and turned all of my focus towards that, creating a vision and goal that I wanted,” she admitted. Hatterberg attended her first Olympic Trials in 2008, which she describes as “one of the most intense and exhilarating experiences ever.” “I was so awe-struck,” she beamed, “I felt so cool.” She may have found her first Olympic Trial somewhat daunting but while attending the Trials for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Hatteberg felt “more focused.” “[I] didn’t
compare myself as much to all of the big name swimmers.” Comparisons aside, Hatteberg’s journey to the Olympic Trials was a result of more than just her competitive streak. Hatteberg is dedicated to a rigorous training schedule that includes 9 swimming practices a week that are “specifically designed to work a different part of [her] stroke.” She also lifts weights 3 times a week. Hatteberg reserves Sundays for rest but admits that she has a problem sitting still. Often she’ll go running. She hopes that running will translate into another athletic endeavor. “I would really like to get into triathlons but I don’t know the first thing about cycling,” she joked, “so maybe I will learn to love it soon!” While Hatteberg won’t be swimming this year for Team USA, you can be sure she’s rooting for the home team all the way. In addition to watching the swimming events, Hatteberg says she has her DVR set up so she can catch all of the Track & Field and Gymnastic competitions. Hatteberg feels “incredibly lucky and blessed” to have gotten to the Olympic Trials this year. “I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for my family and their support,” she acknowledged, “or my coaches and teammates that have challenged me to reach my goals.” In addition to her record-holding GA Tech swimming, Hatteberg also swims locally with The Atlanta Rainbow Trout. While her eligibility at Tech has ended and Hatteberg is flying high athletically, don’t be surprised if you catch Hatteberg taking off in another direction. “I love planes,” she reminded, “it’s still my dream.”

Gay Athletes Fumble in

hat might have been the dawn of a new era in the Olympics has ended before it ever began.
Out gymnast Josh Dixon had hoped for a spot on the U.S. men’s gymnastics team at this month’s Summer Olympics in London. The San Jose, California, native competed in the Visa Championships in late June and the ensuing two-day Olympic trials in his hometown. Ultimately finishing 13th out of 15, however, extinguished any chance for Dixon to take his place under the glow of the Olympic torch. He was not chosen for the eight-man U.S. team, which consists of five main contenders and three alternates. If he had been selected, he would have been the first openly gay American gymnast in Olympics history. It was a disappointing coda to an otherwise promising upward swing. Dixon had bounded into the championships and trials fresh from a triumphant second-place showing at the U.S. Men’s Qualifier in early May in Colorado Springs. Gymnastics has been a lifelong passion for the

Stanford University graduate, from training to competing. For Dixon, who is half-black and halfJapanese and was adopted by a white father and a Japanese mother, his single-minded devotion to his sport precluded any exploration of the same-sex feelings he had felt from an early age. “Eat, sleep, train and do homework,” said Dixon in a May 6 interview with Outsports.com’s Cyd Zeigler, Jr. “Gymnastics was my number one priority, and if something got in the way of that I had to push it aside.” However, as Outsports.com reports, when Dixon was a junior at Stanford, the time was right for him to become what he was. At the university, he found a welcoming circle of friends, fellow athletes (some of them also gay), and other students to whom his coming out process was matter-of-fact. With Dixon’s coming out on the road to what would have been a spot on the U.S. Men’s Gymnastics team at the Olympics, he may not have achieved one goal, but he has instead lowered the bar for visibility and inclusiveness of other openly gay athletes in competitive sports to come.
2012 Summer Olympics Kicked Out for Lighting Up
A
by Van Gower
n openly gay Olympic hopeful has been booted from this summer’s London games after recently testing positive for marijuana. Wrestler Stephany Lee, a lesbian, had qualified for the 2012 London Olympics and married her longtime partner, Brigg McDonald, just one day later. It was surely a heady and joyful time for the athlete. But when test results came back showing marijuana in her system, she was disqualified. I’ve never been a marijuana user, but I firmly believe it should be legalized. Its outlawed status doesn’t make logical sense to me. I’ve known enough people in my life who’ve smoked pot, and they were always intelligent, functional, active individuals who didn’t turn into crazed and kooky fiends they moment they inhaled. Granted, there’s a lot of popular culture out there that paints a portrait of marijuana users that way; in movies, for example, we get everything from the early campy scare-tactic melodramatics of Reefer Madness to doofus, sexy stoner James Franco in Pineapple Express. Hell, somewhere in between, we even had Scooby-Doo and Shaggy Rogers in the original Scooby Doo, Where Are You? cartoon series and its myriad follow-ups. If those two, with their constant jaw-stretcher munchies, weren’t taking tokes in the back of the Mystery Machine, I’d eat my shoes. My guess, though, is that the average recreational marijuana user simply smokes it to relax and unwind – whether it’s after a long hard
day at work or kicking back with a few friends on Saturday night. But while I recognize that smoking pot doesn’t seem to pose a threat to the casual-yet-ongoing user, I imagine its effects probably do linger well enough in more hardcore users that their demeanors may actually draw comparisons to Franco’s character or some other comedic caricature. I don’t know which of those categories of pot smoker Stephany Lee falls into, but from all appearances she’s an accomplished, hard-working woman who has achieved great things and reached admirable goals. I’m also not an athlete, so I don’t have a personal frame of reference for the types of substances and habits that driven athletes must abstain from in order to reach and maintain peak performance levels. However, I do know enough that if an athlete is training for any sort of team or competition – in this case, the Olympics – there are very specific rules, regulations, and codes of conduct that are required of each athlete in order to maintain the fairness and integrity of the competitions. This is something that every athlete is fully aware of going in, and to blatantly disregard that integrity but not putting one’s predilections for indulgence on the back burner while training or competing is a foolish personal choice. It’s the same reason why you wouldn’t want to be sparking doobies or putting coke up your nose while you’re in the middle of a job search: there’s a strong likelihood that it’ll come back to bite you in the ass.

Freedom Reigns Sportswear Celebrates 2012 Summer Games by Ben Coleman
F
reedom Reigns celebrates the summer Olympics this season with its all-new World Champion Collection. Inspired by the flags of leading nations, the line features an assortment of briefs, tanks, tees, jackets and shorts, all coordinating with uniquely bold color combinations set against its patented multistripe red, white and blue elastic waist band. “Like the athletes we design for, Freedom Reigns is a leader in its playing field”, says Curtis Stallard, who runs the

label with his husband Sael Castro. “Our use of asymmetrical color combinations, unique construction and trim is what sets us apart from our competitors. It has become something of an identifying brand in itself.” Sael Castro and Curtis Stallard launched Freedom Reigns in 2010 as a tee-shirt shop in California. On a whim, they tested a playful graphic brief on the sales floor. It was a hit with customers
and within a few months, Freedom Reigns began unveiling several styles of briefs, trunks, and jockstraps. Seeing potential to expand their briefs internationally – and with the guidance of Nir Zilberman of the US-based Man Trends Agency - the pair closed their shop and began distributing their collections (which now included an entire sports range) through boutiques around the world.

The idea of freedom holds unique significance to both Castro and Stallard. Sael Castro grew up in Mexico where citizens are not free to live or love freely. He became a legal resident of the United States in 2006. During the short period when gay marriage was legal in California, he and Stallard married. In July, they will celebrate their fourth year anniversary. They say their collection reflects the Freedom Reigns customer: gear is playful and sports minded with a variety of sport stripes, woven stripes and intricate insets on underwear, tee’s, tanks, shorts, long johns and jackets. Red, white and blue were a main theme for this Olympic season but the designers also incorporated many of the colors seen on the summer fashion runways including bright canary yellow, fuchsia pink, Ferrari red and charcoal grey. “When designing our summer collections, we felt it was important to remember the spirit of the games,” concludes Stallard. “It’s a spirit that aligns perfectly with our own brand ideology. Freedom Reigns represents

freedom in every aspect of life. We encourage men to live, love and play freely and let freedom reign wherever they are.” Freedom Reigns’ World Champion Collection and the entire Summer 2012 line are available now at select retail stores and online at LAJock.com.
What A Girl Wants
Anything but Chardonnay!
I
by Rian Ashlei
n America, Chardonnay is King, King Kong to be specific; as in too big and clunky for its own good. Often times the beautiful manifestations of the Chardonnay grape are stifled for the sake of oaky flavored syrup that sells better in American sugar addicted markets. So I will not talk about Chardonnay. You’ve seen it before. Let me show you what you have not seen. Weingut Pfeffingen | Dry Riesling 2011 | $18.99 Some would call Riesling the noble white grape for its diversity and remarkable ability to age. Unfortunately for Riesling, it’s German and American consumers don’t know what the hell Spätlese or Kabinett means, which usually results in a missed opportunity to try this light, palette pleasing varietal. I love pairing chilled Rieslings with spicy Thai cuisine. Pfeffigen has the florality and high acidity that makes Riesling heavenly to smell and even more heavenly to pair with spicy foods that need a hint of delicate sweetness to simmer down their power.
Le Rocher des Violettes | Touche-Mitane Sec | Montlouis-sur-Loire | $23.99 Chenin Blanc is my most beloved white varietal. It can be fresh and fruity, oaky like Chardonnay or even sweet and sometimes sparkling. South Africa makes some stunning Chenin Blancs but my favorites come from the Loire, specifically Vouvray, because of the honeyed expression the varietal tends to take. Chenin Blanc in general reminds me
of an elegant version of all of my favorite childhood tart, fruity candies with the alcohol pay off. This baby is ready for drinking now and goes great with veggie dishes and white meats. Domaine du Tariquet Classic Ugni | Blanc-Colombard | Cotes de Gascogne | $9.99 I love this little oddball cheapy. It’s a French white made from grapes you’ve likely never heard of: Ugni Blanc and Colombard and honestly, it’s just a delicious, uncomplicated porch pounder. I like to break it out for friends who’d like to try a new varietal but still prefer nice, sweet fruit flavors. It has enough apple fruit on the palette to make it a great summer sipper or aperitif and enough tang and minerality to pair it with shellfish. Bodegas Dinastia Vivanco | Vivanco Rioja Blanco | $13.99 When people think of Rioja, they generally think of the reds and the delicious expression of the Tempranillo grape, the old style and chew of the wine and its outstanding capacity to age. But what of the whites? Well two types can emerge. One made for easy drinking alongside shellfish and starch dishes and one made for double decade long aging. But no matter which one you select, the price for the quality will always leave you in awe. This white is made predominantly of the Viura varietal, the same grape used to make Cava, or the Spanish version of Champagne. Its got grass and tropical fruit all over and around it. Bodega Luigi Bosca | Finca La Linda | Torrontes | $11.99 La Linda Torrontes from Argentina is so yummy! It’s not complex, it doesn’t inspire, it just goes down amazingly well. Just think of it as a wonderful ball of peaches and oranges with pretty floral aromas. I’d drink this by itself. No meat, no cheese, no fruit, just a glass and a sundress. david atlanta | 49
Is ‘Sharing Needles’ Okay?
O
f course not! But what about Sharon Needles? Don’t get me lying. Now what had happened was…it was AFTER I went inside the Jungle to see the RuPaul’s Drag Races current winner that I heard the news that Sharon signed a Black fan’s photo of her using the “N” word (insert short HORROR music). Hell, I knew SOMETHING was wrong, with all those protestors outside. I was shocked. I mean, during her show, she carefully referred to Black folks as “African Americans” (well HELLO… this IS Atlanta). But I wasn’t worried about no Sharon Needles child, I was wowed out and impressed at how fiercely the ATLANTA girls Envy Van Michaels turned that show OUT!!! Sharon was only a guest, this was more about the monthly FANTASY GIRLS show that Phoenix puts on. First they had a hot Rocky Horror themed opening…. okay, because you know Ms. Needles like spooky stuff. Next, Ms. Savannah Leigh came out as CHER. I’ve seen some pretty good Cher impressions in this town, but right before our eyes, Ms. Leigh ‘turned back time’ for real right quick with her Cher realness. She moved, act, dressed, and looked (and probably smelled) JUST like the famous tongue singing superstar. The crowd went up. It was a great crowd actually, owner Richard told me the number of people that showed up was “somewhere around 700” …okay for the 700 Club. Yeah it felt like everybody and their mama’dem were there. Phoenix, also show director, bedazzled us with her Katy Perry ‘get up’ as if she was her Doppelganger. The loud mouth on the microphone all night was birthday girl Nicole Paige Brooks who gets points for doing a great hosting job all damn night wearing that satin black cloak carrying that dangerous Grim Reaper’s cane. Alissah Brooks and Star Sanchez Sherrington were also on their A game for the very mix crowd (mixed with straight girls, older and younger menses, black and white). But the entertainer who really stood out for me was multiple pageant winner Envy Van Michaels. She came bursting out doing a Rihanna song as if her LIFE was depending on it! She came out like she was trying to get REVENGE on someone. She came out like a freed caged animal let loose in the jungle… in other words, she let ALL the kids have it! Next month, they’re bringing none other than Ms. LATRICE ROYALE! I can’t WAIT for that one! I don’t know… it’s something about Latrice, she has that respectable mixed aura like one minute she seem sweet as pie and so fun to hang out with, but on the other hand… um… let me just say, I dare you to call HER the “N” word.
UNTIL next week, DON’T read the girls, instead read The Brent Star Report! 52 | davidatlanta

Protect Your Monster

FairyScopes
ARIES (March 20 – April 19): What you have to say is too important to go off half-cocked. Bombastic challenges usually get shut down. Listen to others and think about how to express yourself so that they will appreciate what you have to say.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20): Don’t worry about the global economy. Everyone’s in trouble, but relative to it all, you’re going to be OK. Your hard work is appreciated and valued, and some meditation will take the edge off. Keep those two in balance and you’re fine. GEMINI (May 21- June 20): Efforts to defend your pals may be ill-considered. Listen to them about what they need and be clear, but adaptable, on long-term strategies. Reconsider your own plans for the future. Let go of some old ideas; identify problems now, solve them later. CANCER (June 21- July 22): Feeling alone and disconnected can be a lesson in standing on your own. When you feel negative and self-critical focus on ways to improve yourself. Decide on some positive habits to develop and stick with them. LEO (July 23 – August 22): Some time alone to look after yourself will do you good. When the Sun enters Leo on the 22nd you’ll feel stronger and more certain, perhaps too much so. Approach others with modesty and sensitivity. VIRGO (August 23 – September 22): Asserting your sexuality, whether as an individual or as part of your LGBT community, requires insight and sensitivity. Reconsider your place in your community and your own deepest truths. Maturity and growth require adaptivity.
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22): Feeling lost and disconnected can be a good thing. Take yourself on an intellectual adventure, preferably an artistic one. You won’t find yourself in a museum, but you could find yourself open to brilliant new ideas. SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21): Sex can offer distraction from or insight to your problems. Talk with an intimate partner (sexually or not) about whatever’s bothering you. Without that clarity you can get crankier, undermining your work and your health. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20): Making plans with your partner may push you to reevaluate your own priorities, to look harder at your responsibilities. Some creative thinking can get you through this, but you won’t manage it on your own. Keep talking with your mate. CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19): Don’t take anything for granted with your health. Bad news now can be dealt with better than worse news later. Change your habits: quit smoking, revise (or start) your exercise routine, improve your diet. It’s not too late – yet. AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18): Trying to be fun and witty, you’re sure to upset someone. Maybe they need or deserve a kick, but think ahead about consequences. Also remember the difference between justice and vengeance. Are you speaking up for noble purposes or from resentment? PISCES (February 19 – March 19): Refinancing a mortgage now could work out very well, but do your homework, be very clear on details and fight for better terms. Domestic problems can be assuaged in the bedroom, but tough issues and decisions still need to be dealt with.

Bitch! Session
To the straight men that have to work in gay bars: get a life! We don’t need you. You have a whole straight world to work in.
If I like ya tonight, will I love ya in the morning?
Britney Spears was just played on the old people station. I feel depressed now. Is this particularly hot weather causing bar customers to become complete idiots? Don’t walk up and ask me to “make something delicious.” You’re adults who clearly drink at bars often, so stop acting like underage college freshmen at their first frat party. I hope that me and my coworkers win the lottery, so I never have to speak to any of them again.
I love Honey Badger. Every bad ass bone in his body!

No wonder it’s the summer of the tank top. It’s too hot to wear anything else!
I’m sorry that sexy Russian prostitutes make more than you. Bastille Day is JUST like July 4th, except it takes place in France and nobody cares about it.
Um…we haven’t dated long enough for breakup sex. Why are there SO many butt-ugly bartenders these days? A few years back, men would flock to bars with HOT bartenders. I may be a few years older, yet I still go out quite a bit…just don’t get it!
Guys – grow a pair! If you see a hot guy at the gym, talk to him! Don’t be so damn hard to get because you ain’t all that!
Now you’re just somebody that I used to blow. Can we bring back the Love Boat section? There’s a Starbucks barista I’ve had a crush on for quite some time!
