WTF!?!?

8 Hidden Gems from Mainstream Artists by Lucas Witherspoon

1. Toni Braxton – “Stay” Even though Toni’s most recent album, Pulse, received rave reviews, it only performed moderately well commercially (though it did mark her fifth U.S. top-ten album). Now, I’m not a big Toni Braxton fan, but I do like the album, but I absolutely love this iTunes deluxe edition bonus track. I don’t know if it’s that I can personally relate to song or that the song is just badass, but either way, it’s worth the listen, Toni fan or not.

2. Little Boots – “Catch 22” I’ve known of and been obsessed with Little Boots for a long time, but this Hands Japanese bonus track really sealed the deal. As the song’s title suggests, it’s about being in a sort of paradoxical relationship that part of you wants to leave, while another part of you knows love is going to keep you in the relationship. It sounds a bit heavy, but I promise the song is of a lighter fare.

3. Kylie Minogue – “Burning Up” Kylie’s album, Fever, is generally associated with “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”, Kylie’s most successful single to date, and, while a good song, it overshadows tracks worthy of more recognition, like “Burning Up”. The album was meant to be an dance-pop fusion, but “Burning Up”, the album’s closing track, is more of a

disco-dance fusion. Lyrically, not her best song, but musically, it’s brilliant.

4. Tove Styrke – “Call My Name” Okay, Tove Styrke isn’t really a well-known artist, but I couldn’t resist including this song. Tove came in third place on Swedish Idol in 2009 and released her self-titled debut album in 2010, which is still one of my all-time favorite albums, but this song is supposedly from her second studio album (though I haven’t heard much else about a second album since this single was released). The lyrical content is a bit nonsensical, but it’s nonetheless a really fun, upbeat pop song.

5. Ke$ha – “Shots on the Hood of My Car” You know how doomsday preppers build underground bunkers and load up on guns in expectation of a zombie apocalypse? Well, Ke$ha has the same plan most of us do if the world ever comes to an end: gathering up all of your friends and getting shitfaced. That’s basically what the song’s about, and though that sounds pretty lame, the song is actually a fun, airy ditty. I can only assume this song didn’t make it to Ke$ha second studio album— when it was recorded—because it didn’t fit with the theme of album, but unreleased tracks are sometimes an artist’s best work.

6. Kandi – “I Want You” Let me start by saying that Kandi Koated by Kandi Burruss is one of the most underrated albums of all time. With that being said, “I Want You” is definitely one of the standout tracks on the album. Why it was never released as a single I’ll never know, because the other singles from the album were basically flops, and “I Want You” is arguably the most commercially friendly track on the album.

7. Monrose – “Catwalk V-O-G-U-E” I’m actually shocked more queens don’t know about this song. Yes, Monrose was the result of a cheesy television talent show, but it doesn’t discount the fact that they had some amazing tracks, “Catwalk V-O-G-U-E” being one of them. It’s guaranteed to make you feel like throwing on an LBD and stilettos, and strutting a runway, which was presumably the song’s intent. Mission: accomplished.

8. Hilary Duff – “Dreamer” Bear with me on this one. I still thought of Hilary Duff as Lizzie McGuire until she released her last album, Dignity. Her musical inspiration for the album was, per her own proclamation, The Faint and Depeche Mode, which is where “Dreamer” comes into play, as it samples Depeche Mode’s “Just Can’t Get Enough”. The difference is that the song isn’t a generic sample where an artist just rips and updates a Depeche Mode beat, and then sings over it. The subject matter also makes it an interesting song: she wrote the song in response to a stalker, which makes for a few humorous lines. (P.S. Download “Gypsy Woman” as well—it’s a darker song written about her dad’s infidelity, but it’s still amazing).

WTF!?!? Tidbits

A holographic Tupac performed at Coachella. I hope Tupac’s grave doesn’t include the phrase “R.I.P.” because he hasn’t been allowed to rest in peace since 1997. According to a new report by Matthew Winslow, an Eastern

Kentucky University psychologist, most people opposed to gay marriage don’t feel personally threatened by marriage equality, but rather attribute it to a “’thirdperson perception,’ a term for those who believe others will be more influenced by outside sources than themselves.” Was a study really necessary in this instance? Basically, they just unknowingly undermined practically their entire argument against marriage equality.

57-year-old Kelsey Grammer had his wife’s name tattooed on his hip,

showing he has the judgment of a drunk sorority girl on Spring Break.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie got engaged (reportedly

for the sake of their kids), which makes them only slightly more interesting because now pretty jewelry is involved.

The new fad among NRA members who are subsequently doomsday preppers is shooting zombies. Okay, is it just me, or should anyone who actually believes a zombie apocalypse is possible be banned from ever owning a firearm? Monster Smash T

By Elijah Sarkesian

hese days, a certain one-eyed monster is getting more and more attention.

For the record, that would be Harry the Monster, the central character in the comic Protect Your Monster. After a few years of appearing in David Magazine and impacting the Atlanta community, Protect Your Monsteris entering into some new arenas. Most notably, the recent publication of Covered: A Protect Your Monster Comic Collection is giving Protect Your Monster the chance to reach a broader audience. Shepherding the project is Protect Your Monster creator Richard Marshall. Marshall, who also works as a bartender at Jungle, was inspired to use Harry the Monster as a way to promote safe sex. With a combination of puns and creative images, Protect Your Monster has found a number of ways of relaying a promotion of safe sex. Protect Your Monster’s impact has also gone beyond the pages of David. Proceeds from the project, including book sales and other assorted products, benefit a number of Atlanta organizations that deal with HIV/AIDS, including AID Atlanta, Positive Impact, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and the Armorettes. I sat down with Marshall to discuss the origins of the series, the impact of the project on the community, and more.

What led you to start Protect Your Monster? It started in February of 2009 and they mainly started as icebreakers. Hopefully people get the message [from the drawings of the monster]. That’s how I led off into it. So I had that and I created the Woo-Woo, the female persona, and mainly just because working with Joey Johnson [a.k.a. Knomie Moore] of the Armorettes, who’s barbacking over at Jungle. When I started doodling these, he was the one who suggested I make a project out of it. I created it to have people jump into the conversation about safe sex. A lot of people are hesitant to bring up protection, status, testing because they feel it kills the 24 | davidatlanta

mood. And, you know, a certain percentage of people are a little shy about sex anyway. So, just as a way to springboard into that, pretty much if you see a one-eyed monster with a raincoat on…

How often are you creating comics at this point? I’ll have a new comic come out every week in David. If inspiration hits me, I’ll produce… seven in one week, because it keeps on coming to me. The puns will flow. When I first started off, David wanted to do the four-panels just to keep the reader’s attention a little bit more. But I’ve always tried to simplify the message. HIV/AIDS seems to be a very heavy topic. I grew up on Calvin & Hobbes and The Far Side, so I felt a little bit of humor put in with a heavy topic would be a good approach to [talking about] it. Boxes and packages are a frequent theme. After a year of doing the four-panel comics, I was able to bring a little bit of humor into social situations. After that first year, I wanted to go back to my original approach, which was hitting people with a simple message, grabbing their attention and putting it out there. It’s definitely been a lot of fun. One of the things that’s really interesting is before I started working with David Magazine, and continuing through the whole relationship, I’ve been able to partner up with a number of people in the community. Steven Igarashi from AID Atlanta has been invaluable. He’s invited me to… as you can see on the website, I had a costume. It has since been retired, because I was tired of losing 30 pounds of water weight.

I noticed that on the website. I thought that the costume was cool, but it had to be very hot. Yes. The costume was pretty much shag carpet. It was cool, though. I was a mascot during college. I was Pounce the Panther at Georgia State, but that was enough for me, and I wouldn’t subject

anybody else to being inside that costume. Febreze is your best friend when you’re inside that costume.

effort they put out there.

But I was able to get the costume and participate with AID Atlanta and a couple of different Atlanta Prides. I eventually walked in the AIDS Walk twice. Darie, one of my friends, actually donned the Woo-Woo costume. That one’s even hotter, so bless her for that.

Amazon has the digital book, and people can order the physical book from there as well. It’s for people outside the Atlanta region, but also it helps to have the physical book in Atlanta, and Brushstrokes has been so fantastic with community involvement anyway, with their orders, it actually allows me to do a bigger donation per book. E s s e n t i a l l y, Brushstrokes is $4 – a dollar going to each organization – per book.

So what led you to come out with the book? Well, the whole thing with me. When I first started Protect Your Monster, I wanted it to be an opportunity to come up with approaching a heavy topic as well as fundraising. And of course, Joey Johnson with the Armorettes and all of the other organizations I’ve been able to come in contact with over the years, I’ve seen all of the work that they do and it’s really impressive. I always wanted to make sure that if I got anything, I give it back. With the comics, I try to put it out there as much as possible. I did some t-shirts for a while, and anything that was gained from that went back to…pretty much half of it went to a non-profit organization. But I’d much rather focus on getting done with the comics. Hitting the two-year mark, I just figured it was time to compile it, and people who were interested in the book, they wanted to have the collection available to be able to enjoy it and share it with their friends. It would be a way to emphasize the message I’m trying to get out there. Also a majority of anything that comes as a profit from the book goes directly to organizations. I see all of the important things they do, and if anything, I’m just trying to bring a little more attention to something they live and breathe on a daily basis, so definitely all the credit goes to them for the

Where is the book available?

How did you choose which comics ended up in the book? There are about 120 of them that made the digital cut. There was a lot of self- editing. Some of them weren’t that funny. Sometimes I just had a deadline to meet. I had a few that just needed to go away. But the ones that I was able to get the biggest response out of made it. I have the Facebook page. I’ve had a lot of friends jump on that, and a lot of people that I don’t know, which is kind of fun for me. I’ve been able to get a pretty steady stream of feedback.

So what are some of your future plans or ideas for Protect Your Monster? Pipe dream: essentially, my main goal has always been to focus on the topic, so exposing my monster is the main thing that I’m looking for, if that would be…you know. I would hate to give myself one direction and have other options open up. I think doing something with the CDC would be fantastic. Anything that gives me a large impact. A cartoon would be a lot of fun. If you have any connections at Cartoon Network, we’ll talk. davidatlanta | 25

Community Spotlight

Bikram Yoga Marietta

T

by Joseph Brownell

he sweat poured from my body as my legs and arms found themselves in unfamiliar positions. Looking around I noticed people removing their shirts, figuring it was okay to do so I peeled my shirt from my sweat soaked torso and let it hit the floor. Blood was pulsing through my veins as I inhaled and exhaled the energy that surrounded me. No, this wasn’t my experience on the dance floor at Jungle last weekend. I was taking my first Bikram Yoga class at LGBT-owned Bikram Yoga Marietta. 2012 has been tough for LGBT-owned businesses. The community has lamented the loss of Outwrite and Poster Hut. Since we tend to have more disposable income, it’s important that we are conscious of our community and where we choose to spend our money. In an effort to find more LGBT- owned businesses in Atlanta, I was introduced to Naedra Fox, owner of Bikram Yoga Marietta. Naedra answered a few questions for us and extended an exclusive offer to David Magazine readers.

How has yoga benefited your life? How long have you been doing yoga? Naedra: I’ve been practicing Bikram Yoga for 10 years. From my earliest days practicing this yoga, I’ve been impressed not only with how the series makes my body feel cleansed and toned after every class, but also how it clears and calms the mind. Before I started teaching yoga, I worked in a busy office, and I used to come to yoga with my mind tied up in knots. But somehow through those 90 minutes of postures and sweat, not only did my body get stretched, but the mental knots stretched out, too. I would walk into class one person and walk out another. 34 | davidatlanta

This yoga has taught me patience and perseverance. It’s humbled me and at the same time made me stronger. I’ve gained in flexibility, strength, endurance and balance.

Tell us a little bit about why you went into the yoga business? I practiced yoga for several years before deciding to go to Teacher Training. I know what it is to struggle and come through on the other side, and it was yoga that helped give me strength and direction. I became an instructor because I wanted to share this lifechanging practice with others. I started teaching at Bikram Yoga Marietta in 2004. I’ve been teaching there since that time. When the studio became available for sale in 2011, I decided to purchase it, because I wanted to take part in the continuation of the BYM family after being a member of it for so long.

What do you say to people who are afraid to try yoga because they don’t think they can do it? The #1 reason I’ve heard people give as to why they think they can’t do yoga is that they think they have to be flexible. The good news is that yoga is not about turning yourself into a human pretzel, rather it is about bringing the body back into proper alignment, increasing postural integrity, clearing the mind, stimulating the organs and systems, improving lung capacity, detoxing, and so much more. In other words, it’s not about pretty poses – it’s about creating a healthier body and mind and increasing your quality of life. This means that if you are inflexible, out of shape, suffering with injuries, have back problems or misalignment, are mentally bogged down, stressed, overweight, depressed, etc. those are all good reasons to start Bikram yoga. It’s also helpful to know that Bikram Yoga was

designed with beginners in mind, and beginners are welcome to all classes. Every posture starts with a set-up of precise instructions. Then more steps are added on. Everyone starts with the first step and only goes as far as they can that particular day while maintaining proper alignment and breathing to the best of their ability. So beginners and experienced practitioners can take the same class together.

Tell us about Bikram Yoga Marietta? How long have you owned it? Bikram Yoga Marietta opened in 2003. Its original owners, a gracious lesbian couple, always sought to create a friendly, warm and even family-like environment. I purchased the studio in 2011 and am continuing to promote these same values. Regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, fitness level, religion, beliefs, age, or ability, everyone is welcome at Bikram Yoga Marietta. There is even babysitting available to help parents get to class! New students will find caring and knowledgeable instructors and a non-judgmental space to learn and grow in.

Is there a difference between Bikram Yoga and other hot yoga classes? Hot yoga means yoga practiced in a heated room. Any style of yoga could be practiced in the heat and called a “hot yoga” class. There are different sequences offered at Hot Yoga studios, and the rise in Hot Yoga has been growing over the past decade. Bikram was the first to have his series practiced in a heated room, thus Bikram Yoga is referred to as the original hot yoga. It is practiced in a room heated of 105 degrees and 40% humidity, which makes the body more malleable and less prone to injury. It also causes perspiration for detoxification and increases calories burned. Every time you go to a Bikram class, it is the same yoga prescription of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises that has stood the test of time since the 1970’s. Classes are taught according to Bikram’s specific guidelines, and all instructors at Bikram studios have completed an intensive teacher training and been personally certified by Bikram himself. To read more visit www.davidatlanta.com about Bikram Yoga Marietta, 80 Powers Ferry Road SE. David Readers are offered an introductory choice of 10 consecutive classes for $30, 10-class card for $50 (valid for 30 days) or a 10-class couples’ card for $70. “Stars of the Century” is Flawless!

T

he show is every Monday night at the Jungle, and there I was sucking on the ice through the straw because I was too distracted with the entertainer on stage to go get my drink refreshed. I was too caught up right quick at the fact that aside from the flawless female impersonators, this was the only show in town that have males portraying male singers. It’s not ‘drag king’ drag, but simply ‘male drag’. I say ‘drag’ because those men in this show are DONE. Their hair and face, DONE. Their outfits and bling, DONE. Their presentation, DONE. They give me GQ meets Vibe magazine with just a few pages of VOGUE, again, DONE! (Their secret: STYLE and CONFIDENCE). By the way, just to name a few: Archie Bonet, R’Darius Black, the dancing talents of Christopher Iman, Al Milan Dupree and don’t forget Joe Jackson (no, not Michael’s father… although… well nevermind, JK Joe). Oh, and another thing I like about these guys, they keep R&B alive in the clubs! After refilling my cocktail, I also marveled at the comedic mic skill of emcee Miss Sophia. She never fails to entertain the crowd in between being entertained. Tonight she put a ‘stud’ in the spotlight so that Floyd (not the stud’s real name) could demonstrate his raw dancing talent skills. (NOTE: “Stud” is pretty much a lesbian who gives MAN. She walks like a MAN, acts and dresses like a MAN, and when you see her…

MAN!). And of course, Miss Sophia can get 20 laughs out of the crowd just by singing one birthday song… her way. Speaking of, “Stud” from RuPaul drag races being all “boy” tonight, walking past me, is none other than Mariah Paris Balenciaga. Work Miss Mariah! I see you giving us “man” tonight, un huh! Ms. Sophia has just introduced the next entertainer, Miss Nichelle Paris (who’s always in some damn pageant! Gotta love her!) Um, Miss Nichelle decided she was going to own this crowd tonight because she came out wearing this yellow swim suit-ish number showcasing legs and booty cheeks for days, representing a burst of hot energy to some fast song, child. I mean, she was killing it tonight for points! I couldn’t help but have these words constantly rotating in my head: YES! WORK! TWIRL! I only have time to talk about one more entertainer… so that means I’ll have to do a Part 2 at some point. It’s the ultimate entertainment diva of the show AND the show director, Miss Niesha Dupree. Her super-sized hair was once again flawless, just like her stage presence. And as usual she knows how to work a crowd! Ms. Dupree and the rest of the cast are always on point… perhaps, there’s a reason this show is called THE STARS OF THE CENTURY. Stay tune for more… UNTIL next week, DON’T read the girls, instead read The Brent Star Report!

FairyScopes

ARIES (March 20 – April 19): As your sense of direction is getting clearer, you may realize a bit late that you’ve been overly emphatic about petty issues with your partner. The biggest problem is disagreeing on the real problem. Listen more; argue less.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20): Your financial luck is getting a brief uptick that will require a bit of effort, but a little initiative can go a long way. Ask for that raise, put out some résumés. When to buy lottery tickets? Check with your astrologer!

GEMINI (May 21- June 20): Expectations exploding into arguments can trigger a sharp reassessment of who your friends really are – who you can count on in a pinch or for a pinch. “Friends with benefits” are likeliest to get problematic. CANCER (June 21- July 22): As the future is looking a little rosier than usual find ways to invest your time and energy in things that matter. Financial investments are less reliable, but with a shrewd, critical eye you may find something worth the risk. LEO (July 23 – August 22): For your own sake and those you love set some rules and limits. Some people will be shocked, but they’ll manage. Hold your ground. There may be a cost, but demanding some basic respect will increase your confidence and your authority. VIRGO (August 23 – September 22): Playing tough is OK if everyone is on the same wavelength. It’s all good fun until someone gets hurt. If it’s consensual that could be when the real fun begins. Challenging your own creative efforts can open a good catharsis. LIBRA (September 23 – October 22): A little flirting can lead to some eye-opening adventures. A hot fling can offer new insights; it probably won’t last, but enjoy and learn what you can. Your age is an asset, not an obstacle. SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21): If you see as an argument as an opportunity to learn rather than an exercise in intellectual bulldozing, what you learn can open job opportunities and help you start or deepen an important relationship. Ask hard questions and accept hard answers.

Scopes brought to you by Jack Fertig, professional astrologer since 1977. Visit his website at www.starjack.com. 60 | davidatlanta

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20): Every partnership needs a bit of work. Dealing with problems now should yield happy results. That could lead to exuberant fun and risk-taking. Go for the fun. Pass on the risks. Think ahead and use good sense. CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19): Winning the battle at home can cost you the war. Be open to changing your mind and even yourself. It’s called “growth.” Openness and adaptability are the keys to success. Taking on the hard challenges will pay off quickly. AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18): You need a good intellectual challenge. Don’t settle for a mere argument. Talk with a sibling offers can terrific insight on your family and how you carry those patterns into your relationships. PISCES (February 19 – March 19): Every relationship hits bumps and needs work. Problems with your partner gain clarity but still need some work. Some expert advice could help. Having a little fun and affirming your commitment can also do wonders.

Dear Twink: you over extended your credit to buy your $50k car which has put you into financial hock. MY $70k car was paid in full when I bought the car. Now get over yourself. Love Daddy

I’m SO EXCITED for May 1st, I can’t wait to see what global shenanigans Occupy has planned! It’s Labor Day everywhere else in the world but duh here they changed it because of the “red scare” in the 50s
