Fighting Temptation “Pardon me! Sorry! Excuse me sir!” said my girlfriend Chase as we pushed our way through the crowded restaurant. Publik on Peachtree - our favorite new dinner and cocktails spot in Midtown - has become a regular hangout for my circle of friends mainly because the food is great and the wait is typically non-existent.

Apparently this is not the case when a huge pay-per-view boxing match is being broadcast free of charge on all their plasma TV screens.

Instead of the quiet little table in the back we normally camp out at, we were crammed in along with every male sports enthusiast within a two mile radius.

“Jackpot!” said Shawn and he touched down to our table located conveniently in the center of all the chaos. “There is enough testosterone in this place to fuel my car for the next week. I love fight night! Can we come back next week?”

“Unfortunately, I doubt there’s a fight party every week babe,” I said, though even as I spoke my eyes were torn between our neighbors juicy Kobe Beef burger and all beefcakes in the crowd.

“That burger looks amazing!” Chase said, clearly reading my mind.

“No way, don’t even think about it,” chimed in Shawn staring straight in my direction. “You and I are going on a ten city gay pride tour this summer and there better be abs instead of flab under that t-shirt when it comes off.”

Coming from anyone else I might have thrown not only a drink in their face, but an entire place setting along with it. But this was Shawn, my bestie, my workout partner, and most importantly my binge diet brother. He more than anyone understands the unhealthy obsession I’m possessed with every summer to look more like an action figure than a human being.

“You guys are insane!” said Chase. “I’m the bitch who just had a baby and you two want to sit around and talk about watching your figure.”

“It’s different for us though,” argued Shawn in 14 davidatlanta

protest. “We’re gay! Look at all these straight men around here. They’re drinking beer and gobbling chicken wings. They don’t give a damn that you just had a baby.”

“So you’re saying no one eats at your parties?” said Chase.

“Not three weeks before Memorial Day weekend they don’t.”

Sad as it sounds, it’s true. If this were any other springtime party the buffet would go practically untouched. It seems Body Dysmorphic Disorder and the gays are a match made in heaven. We count calories, try every diet, and while everyone else rushes to the gym after the holidays, it’s a second home to us year round.

Once the fight was over we all hung out for a few minutes longer before finally saying our goodbyes. After I got home I felt proud of myself for not going back on my diet even with all the temptation around me. Shawn was right. I would have regretted it in a few weeks.

Since I knew he would still be up I decided to give him a call and thank him for helping me make the right decision.

“Uh, Hello?” said Shawn in a low muffled voice.

“Hey babe, just wanted to thank you for helping me not pig out tonight.”

“Sure, sure, no problem. Can I call you right back?”

“Is everything okay?” I asked.

There was long awkward pause before I finally heard the oddly familiar voice of the cashier at JR Crickets in the background say, “Sir! Sir! That’ll be $10.72. Do you want extra sauce on your wings as well as your fries?”

“You know what Shawn,” I said before hanging up the telephone. “Tell her make that two orders and I’ll see you at my place in a few minutes.”

Chandler Bearden Heads to Chicago, representing Atlanta in the 32nd annual IML competition

Chandler Bearden, who recently won the Mr. Atlanta Eagle contest a few weeks ago is getting ready to go to Chicago to represent Atlanta in the 32nd annual IML (internationalMister Leather) competition.

MIMI SIMONE

Having lived all over the city, Mimi Simone is a native of Atlanta. Performing for 4 years, she began in 2006 as part of a burlesque show. “I had never done anything like that before. I had a lot of help and a lot of support to put my first performance together and it was an amazing moment.” Mimi was hooked.

She says she couldn’t wait to do it again.

“This past year has been incredible. Chynna Fox believed in me and gave me a chance.

My drag career is starting to take off now and it feels really good.” Mimi admits to getting her inspiration from many things in her life.

She has had the opportunity to work with so many artistic people, “not only in the drag community but in theater, dance and music as well. One entertainer that I look up to is Gigi Monroe—she is great!”

When not performing on stage, Mimi loves being outdoors with her dogs, Fantasia and Fitzgerald. You may also see her at the park flying kites with friends.

She even volunteers her time at a charity called Coats Of Love, which provides coats for those who can’t afford one.

You will be seeing more of Mimi, as she is part of a group called the MiMettes. The two other girls in the group, Cherry Del Rosario and Esther K., and Mimi do productions all over the city. She has had guest spots at Blake’s, Amsterdam. However, you can always see her Saturday nights at Tijuana Garage in Little 5 Points as part of Chynna Fox’s Glamazons. “Thank you to all of the people that come out and support me…I love you!”

Fly Girl

Veronica doesn’t mind that most people think she’s a man.

“I get mistaken for a drag queen all the time,” admits the singer, commonly referred to as the modern day Betty Grable. The US Marines voted her their favorite pin-up girl.

“I think it’s flattering. It means I got style.”

She also has curves that helped her land recent covers of Maxim Magazine and - in conjunction with the announcement of her first English language music album, Saint nor Sinner - Billboard Magazine. The first release,”If You Wanna Fly”, is an infectious dance anthem that is already heating up gay dancefloors.

“I think we all wanna fly,” said Veronica at the album’s announcement in New York. “We all wanna leave inhibitions behind. We wanna say ‘stop limiting me’.

“Growing up, there was always someone trying to cut my wings,” she remembers.

“People called me crazy for wanting more. ‘If You Wanna Fly’ is about disregarding everyone who says you can’t and taking the plunge into the unknown to find new beginnings.”

Veronica was four when her mother decided to take the plunge into the unknown, leaving Havana, Cuba for the United States. They made a home in Miami where at 19, Veronica gained fame as an entertainment reporter on a local television show. The Spanish language channel Univision then offered her a co-hosting gig on their popular program, “Don Francisco Presenta”. The opportunity came with the caveat that Veronica bare her backside at the closing of every show. She agreed, confident that once people looked beyond her derrière, they would be impressed with the talent underneath.

That talent included singing.

Veronica is already regarded as the next Shakira in South America where she has had three Spanish-

language hits. “Vengo Con To” was released in 2008 and ascended the charts along with the rise of the Raggaeton movement. “Mamma Mia” broke in 2009 followed by “Es Tan Dificil Olvidarte”, a song Veronica dedicated to the fallen US troops in Iraq. It climbed to the top 10 on Billboard’s Pop Contemporary chart.

Like Shakira did, Veronica now has her sights on conquering the USA. She has enlisted the help of gay fave DJ/remixers Mike Rizzo and DJ Escape to help penetrate the gay community.

“It is so important to me that I reach out to my gay fans,” says Veronica, a strong supporter of gay rights. Her beloved gay cousin passed away from AIDS. “I’ve taken a bit of heat in my career, from conventionalists who oppose my pin-up girl past and even recently from the Latino community for recording an English album.

It’s my gay fans who understand that sometimes you have to fight to get respect.”

In addition to gay rights, Veronica is a strong supporter of the troops. She counts hugging over seven thousand soldiers at war in Iraq and Afghanistan as her proudest life achievement. When Veronica was asked by the New York Stock Exchange to ring the NASDAQ bell in Time Square last year, she invited The USO and UNICEF along with her, to help bring awareness to both important organizations.

She dreams of a day when both of her life causes can unite in harmony. “It can only be done with the doing away of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” she says.

In the meantime, she looks to her LGBT fans for encouragement while on stage.

“Whenever I perform, I always scan the crowd to find that queen. If he’s waving his arms and shaking his booty, I know I’m doing something right.”
