JUST ANOTHER NIGHT OF FISHNETS & ost people say I live a strange yet sometimes exciting life. Lately I have been living out of my comfort zone. A lot. I don’t know how I do it, but I end up in the most peculiar situations.

Both “Protect Your Monster” and “Protect Your Woo Woo” are fantastic and have a great message, by the way, and I was honestly happy to help a friend. Just a little freaked out.

Last week seemed ordinary with plenty of articles to write, violin lessons to teach, and hash to sling at my part-time restaurant job.

So I decided not do a half-ass job. I would embrace my inner vag and transform into Woo Woo. No one could see my face, anyway. The costume covers everything but my legs from the thighs down, so I decided to shave my legs, put on some fishnets and heels, and work it. Don’t ask why I had access to those items.

The week was going just fine but then started getting weird. First, I had a very unexpected celebrity interview, which will be revealed in an upcoming issue. It was with someone in music, film and TV who I have loved a long time. After driving almost two hours in the rain and traffic, I had a face-to-face interview, which only lasted about ten minutes and took place while she was getting her hair done in her trailer. That’s the way it goes sometimes. Celebs are busy, ya know. As the week went on, I received two unexpected and very exciting pieces of information that may change my life forever. No, I am not pregnant, haha. I can’t reveal what it is just yet, but this is totally unexpected and exactly what I need at this point in my life. So then the week got really weird. My co-workers were at an out-of-town Pride event, and my boss needed a favor. “I need you to dress up like a vagina and go party with lesbians Friday night when you get off your shift at the restaurant,” he said. “I was going to do it, but I won’t be in town. It’s just for 30-45 minutes. Do you mind?” Do I mind? Let’s see. Is that something I can put on my resume? Professional vagina impersonator? This opportunity came about because my friend Richard, the artist who draws “Protect Your Monster,” agreed to dress in a giant vagina costume but had other commitments and couldn’t make it. He recently launched “Protect Your Woo Woo” in David Magazine and agreed to make an appearance at an event to promote it. Woo Woo doesn’t look very much like a vagina, but she represents one. She is purple and looks like a giant pillow with big kissy lips and a bow in her hair, sort of like a purple Mrs. Pac Man. 8 davidatlanta

I planned to work my shift at the restaurant til 11:00, go home and shower and then get in costume. Unfortunately, I ended up working much later and didn’t get to the event until almost 1:00 a.m. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to put on the fishnets and heels, so I just went in my shorts and sneakers. Lame, I know. When I arrived, the party that had been in full force was starting to die down. The event emcee brought me up onstage dressed as Woo Woo during a booty shaking contest with six dancers from the crowd, who each took a turn shaking their thangs. “Shorty got them Apple Bottom jeans, boots with the fur . . .” As I stood there onstage I thought about how proud my mom would be to see her son dressed as a giant vagina, dancing on stage in front of a crowd of lesbians. There are some things she doesn’t really need to know, right? It was really an interesting night and experience. Although it was hot as hell in that costume, I told Richard I’d be happy to help him and dress as Woo Woo again sometime, and I will wear the fishnets next time. No, I will probably not put Woo Woo on my resume, and who knows what I’ll be asked to do next. Nevertheless, my legs are shaved and I’m ready.

Don Lemon

G

‘Transparent’

uess what, I got the chance to spend a couple of hours with cutie pie prime time anchor man from CNN, Mr. Don Lemon last week. Yep, he stopped by Outwrite Bookstore to promote his book, “Transparent”. Speaking of ‘transparent’, when I first saw him on the news, two things happened: 1. I couldn’t help but to notice how hot he was and 2. My gaydar would give me a signal….not a loud, definite one but a “hmmm?”. I’m not saying that this classic GQ brother is obvious, cause he’s not. But I was happy to hear that YEP, HE’S GAY, and elated when I found out that he was stopping by the cornerstone bookstore to chat with us. My short lived crush ended when the first thing he talked about was his boyfriend. But that’s ok because I enjoyed every bit of what he had to say (even though I didn’t get my damn book signed! Child that line was too long at the end, I was #156 and I got HONGREE!!!) The multiple Emmy-winner tells it all honey in his new riveting memoir that’s very inspiring. He reminds us through his own life story of how virtually rewarding it is when you put in the hard work, perseverance and determination to achieve your goals. He told the very attentive packed crowd that, initially, this book was supposed to be one of those ‘chicken soup’ type autobiography but by being an anchor man with integrity he felt compelled to not leave anything out including the part about him being gay. You can feel his energy of relief and freedom when he expressed to us how important and liberating it was for him to come out. One example he gave us of his new found liberation that I thought was adorable when he said now when you see him hanging out at a local gay bar like Blakes, he now doesn’t have to worry about it showing up on the internet somewhere in a negative light with someone trying to ‘destroy’ his reputation…in other words, what he really was saying was “Now bitch, I dare you to try it!”. He felt it was important for him to come out for plenty of reasons like to show or remind us that we’re all the same. ‘Gay’ should also be apart of the “normal” equation we call the human race. Yes we’re gay, but we’re also some of the top anchors in the news world, we’re doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs… you get my point, don’t get me started. Listening to him, I think he got a lot of inspiration from that tragic story of the gay student, Tyler Clementi, who committed suicide after his straight roommate outed him on the internet. Like I said in a couple columns back, these kids need to be reprogrammed and taught right. I love God and respect the different religions out there, but those religious leaders really need to be careful. Their ‘gay hate’ sermons are inspiring a lot of unnecessary (and contradictory) HATE crimes and suicides. I say ‘contradictory’ because..ah…isn’t God about LOVE? Ok, let’s get back to this book… so yea child, that Don really did it this time! Damn, I wish Oprah would have covered this before she retired

14 davidatlanta

because this man is also on his way to becoming a legend or as he and his friends would ‘jokingly’ say, as he tells the crowd, a ‘Gay Icon’. Let me tell you something honey, look at the whole picture. This ain’t just about coming out and clearing his name, but he’s creating history for being the first black anchor man to come out AND only the 2nd or 3rd only other gay anchors to come out (Anderson Cooper anyone?). Folks scared to loose their job if they come out, which is sad considering how all those str8 political figures (you know like Arnold and John and them) that’s been in the news honey and can’t even keep their marriages clean, but yet we have to go from state to state and constantly WAIT and WAIT and WAIT and WAIT for another state to become the “next” state to approve gay marriages. Oops, I got on my soap box again. So yea, you need to get you a copy of this man’s book. Well, that’s my time for this week folks, but Don’s heroism reminds me of Mariah Carey old lyrics, “There’s a HERO if you look inside your heart, you don’t have to be afraid of what you are. There’s an answer, if you reach into your soul. And the sorrow that you know will melt away.” Until next week, don’t read the girls, .instead, read The Brent Star Report!

La Majestuosa Dulce Maria

By Gorca Ramirez y Jesse A. Hancock

Dulce: Bueno fui a Colombia. Voy a Ecuador mañana.

Welcome to ‘Out Life’

C

ade Salon, where life and hair collide. “Out Life,” that is.

This is the fictional setting of a new “dramedy” being filmed in and around town. If all goes well, the show will be seen on a network very soon, and you may be tuning in regularly to watch what happens. The storyline has an appeal to wide audiences, gay and straight, according to the writers and actors. The story unfolds at Cade Salon. Led by Shawn, the manager, the staff strives to do the best they can. Unfortunately, they’re not quite hitting the mark, personally or professionally. “With this salon staff, not to mention insane clients with heavy demands, big attitudes and large scale events, it’s hard to not laugh, cry or throw a glass at your television,” says the show’s writers. As for the significance of the title, actor Cayce Guest, who plays Jay Wright, said it makes perfect sense. “It’s about living life ‘out,’ as you, not necessarily as a homosexual, heterosexual, or bisexual,” said Guest. “Being black, white, Hispanic, just being yourself.” 28 davidatlanta

David Magazine proudly introduces our readers to “Out Life” and the actors in this exclusive interview. Also, read our upcoming interview with ‘Out Life’ star Stacy Layne Matthews of RuPaul’s Drag Race: Season Three. Matthews plays Momma Monet, a drag queen diva and local club owner. David Magazine: How do you describe ‘Out Life?’ Catherine: It’s a very dynamic show. It is very funny but has a lot of seriousness to it that keeps it real. Sebastian: It’s a good portrayal of not only gay life, but also straight life and all the roller coasters and ups and downs that come with being in a salon. Heidi: The show is really about everyday life coming into one little area, and everybody’s personal issues coming out on someone else. Heidi: I think we are more forward than most shows with gay characters, but the show is for everyone because everyone has issues. Blue: It’s about people and relationships, gay and straight. It’s also about tolerance. Cayce: It’s also about relationships at work as well as outside work.

David Magazine: So many shows come and go. What sets this show apart from others? Cayce: Our show portrays good friendships but, more important, true love stories, gay and straight. There are also different issues that characters deal with in the show that a lot of people can relate to. Edward: There’s also the heartache that people go through. It deals with a lot of heartbreak and emotions. Heidi: I think we hit a lot of issues that everyone goes through. We are very blunt and kind of hardcore with our issues. Sharde’: It has everything you can think of, gay and straight. It’s all in there. Sebastian: There are several elements that we have that you don’t see often on television. We deal with abuse, relationships, everyday life and the mixture between gay and straight life. Jason: It’s all about the characters. I think the shows that don’t make it often fail because viewers can’t connect with characters. There are so many different kinds of characters: gay, straight, bi, older, younger, different ethnicities. There is something for every viewer to connect with. It will be interesting to see which characters viewers root for. David Magazine: What character do you play? Sebastian: I play Shawn, the manager, who is flaming gay. He is boisterous and very well-spoken. I can totally see myself letting someone like him into my inner circle of friends. Catherine: Becca is the receptionist in the salon. She is a Southern girl who is excited about moving to the big city. She loves her boyfriend but wants space with him. She is excited about being around gay people and is embracing it. She is a little bothered by the fact that her boyfriend isn’t enjoying the moment with her. She and Gabe have been together since elementary school. Jason: Gabe is Becca’s boyfriend. He’s a mechanic. He works across the street from the salon and gets to see her a lot. He brings her lunch. Gabe is a Southern boy. He loves routines and just having a beer. And he loves his girl, Becca, but he is not exactly comfortable around gay people. The show starts off with him having to move in with gay people. There is going to be a lot of growth for Gabe. Heidi: Lydia, an illegal immigrant, is the shampoo girl. Lydia is very quiet but knows everything going on. You don’t see much of my character at first, but Lydia has layers, and she is kind of motherly. She also isn’t completely innocent. Mai Lin is Heidi’s good friend on the show. Cayce: I play Jay, a stylist who is a pushover. He has been abused by different members of his family and in past relationships. He’s trying to find his selfworth and gets into a few relationships. Eva: Mai Lin Wong is the nail tech. She is a bitch. She is working there not because she wants to, but because her family expects her to be in that line of work. Mai Lin is bored with her life and kind of has an attitude. She is bored with her life. She also has a secret dream, which viewers will find out about later. She also likes to stir the pot and find out things and let other people know about it. Mai Lin also says things that everyone is thinking but would never say. They keep her around because she keeps it interesting. Even though she is a bitch, she has a soft side. Keep watching.

Sharde’: My character is a Sarah Montgomery, a stylist. She is a bitch with a very big heart. I think I can relate to that. She is loved by everyone to some degree, and she has a love me or hate me attitude. Blue: I play Nate, a homosexual man and UPS delivery man. He is very strong. He is not flamboyant. If you didn’t know him at all, you might not know he is gay. Edward: I play Eric, a nurse. He is not flamboyantly gay at all. He is coming to terms with being gay. He wants to come out but has had some minor bad experiences in the past. He is very professional at his job. When it comes to relationships, he just tries to avoid drama.

Your energy is extremely active right now, and you should find that almost anything is possible -- so make sure that you’ve got a full slate of activities to choose from. You want to try it all!

TAURUS It’s vital that you keep yourself from spending money this week -- at least on impulse purchases! Don’t even glance at the shelves next to the checkout counter, or you might end up spending twice as much as you want.

CAPRICORN

GEMINI Listen up -- someone is trying to get your attention and advise you about something that could be a very big deal in the long run. Good advice is surely coming your way, so make the most of it!

You’ve got to remember those who came before you this week -- you’re more in touch with your ancestors than a lot of other folks, and that gives you some serious power. Ponder what they’d think of this week’s big news. AQUARIUS Your big ideas are helping you see the truth behind the confusion. It’s one of those weeks when you are probably too far out there for most folks to understand, but take heart -they should catch up soon!

CANCER

PISCES

Your quick thinking saves everyone needless heartache this week, so see if you can stay in the center of things at work or at home. You may not be feeling all that cheerful, but once you pop up, it’s all good.

Your focus is so intense it gets a little scary this week, whether you’re working on a complicated project or watching a terrible old rom-com on television. You may learn quite a lot about yourself!

Leo Some wild new gossip comes your way -probably pretty early -- that sets you off on a wild chase for more. It’s a great time to get your people to check out what’s really going on out there. VIRGO Your ability to get through the week is depending on your sense of purpose -- so it’s a good thing that inspiration strikes early! You may not be totally enthused, but you can tell that it’s right. LIBRA Your relationships need maintenance -but you’re up for it! In fact, you feel more energized than ever when it comes to coworkers, romantic partners and family members, so start gabbing! SCORPIO You reach out without thinking to help a friend or coworker in need -- and score major points as a result! You may not feel that you’ve earned them, but karma doesn’t care what your intentions are. 38 davidatlanta

Bitch Session It’s 99 cents. You can’t tip on that? Cheap ass. Manhunt’s new site design is so slow, and Bear411 needs dusting off big time. StiffRichards.net has so much more stuff (videos!) and is freakin free! Word. This bar should hire less bitchy lesbian bartenders. You work at a bar. Expect drunken people ordering from you! No soy cotizado, soy selectivo. That bartender with the really nice eyebrows is really cute. Is he single? I’m a lesbian, and there are other lesbians who are regulars at this bar, so why do visiting lesbians act like such attention whores when they’re here? Time for a change. So very tired of the bullshit, lies and drama in ATL. Metro Nashville here I come! Flying winged with fleas please stay here! Luv and kisses!

You like throwing the bait out there and then pulling it back when someone shows interest. You are such a game-playing loser.

You taste like yesterday. Not everyone wants you. Really. As much as you may want to believe it. You may have tight skin, but can you offer anything else? I’m soon to be 40 and rarely do the bar scene, but I did recently and saw some old faces. Some of you who used to be sexy aren’t aging very well. Get off your fucking phone when I am trying to fucking dance with you or I WILL find someone who will!

You lied about your age, and you don’t look like the pics on your profile, but yeah, I’m the asshole for backing out of the date. I know you thought you insulted me by asking about my therapy, but you can’t even tell the people you work with that you’re gay or find a man that doesn’t already belong to someone else. Now who needs the therapy? Are flavored condoms a choking hazard? I don’t want gay or straight bars in my neighborhood. Vomit on sidewalks is equally disgusting no matter who hurls it. He’s a “Cragaysian,” that’s crazy gay Asian. It isn’t just bottoms who are bitchy. I’m a top, and I can be a real pain in the ass.

Gotta Bitch?
