he other day I was at Piedmont Park and noticed this guy walking his dog, “Trixie,” a fat, adorable bull dog. Trixie had evidently had enough walking. As if she were in charge, she plopped down at a shady spot in the grass.

She created quite a scene as sweaty joggers went by, giggling at her owner, who attempted to tug at her collar and even push her a little from behind. A moment of panic set in, and he was visibly embarrassed yet patient. After a few minutes he convinced her to get up and move along.

But I wanted to do it, too. There were, after all, no cameras around. I would probably never see these guys again anyway.

We sailed a while and anchored at a sandbar, out in the middle of the crystal blue water. Captain Steve and Mo instructed us to wade out to it while they fixed our lunch. So we did. We walked around picking up conch

I am a conservative risk taker. I don’t know about you, but I need to take more risks in my life. Why not? I’m not getting any younger. Neither are you. I may need a little push once in a while, but if I want to plop down in the grass in the park or walk naked on a sand bar, so be it.

Maybe you should, too.

According to a 2005 article by Jennifer Warner, “Are Risk Takers Happier?” on WebMD.com a study showed that people who enjoy taking risks may be more content and satisfied with their lives. The study also showed that willingness to take risks decreases dramatically with age.

After about an hour we all got back onboard and started rinsing off and drying off. The next thing I knew two guys were naked and sprawled on deck, all their business out in the open. These were the last guys anyone wanted to see naked, trust. I thought, oh shit, here it goes. Thankfully, no one else gave in to their premature peer pressure.

After a while we suited back up, waded back out to the boat, had lunch, sailed back to shore and went on with our day. Sunburned butts and all.

Still no one was naked. Whew, I thought.

You know what? It wasn’t so bad. It was one of the most liberating experiences I’ve had. If my friend had not encouraged me, I probably would have gone back to the boat. No one pointed or laughed or made anyone feel awkward. It was “Lord of the Flies,” and we were Ralph, Jack, Simon, Piggy and the boys, roaming the island without any parental supervision.

Only no one got killed.

It was so peaceful as we sipped wine, gossiped and listened to club music before we anchored at our first spot to go snorkeling. I’m not the best swimmer, but I gave it a try. I can’t snorkel in the city, now can I? I swallowed about two glasses of salt water, which doesn’t go well with wine, by the way.

So I did.

As I boarded and met Captain Steve and First Mate Mo, whose skin was a lovely shade of leather, I thought: there is no way my fat white ass is getting naked on this boat. After hearing all the rules, we set sail with a giant Gay Pride flag blowing in the wind.

“You know what, I may never get this chance again,” my friend said. “I’m doing it.” He dropped trow and said, “Come on, you should, too.”

There I was with a group of other gay media men, reporters and radio guys and such, and there were cameras aplenty. And of course, the most fabulous sunglasses, spray tans, pedicures and swimsuits. One guy was wearing a gorgeous flowery sarong.

Awkward silence.

I was in Key West this past week. While I was there I ended up on the Blu Q, a fabulous day cruise designed for gay men to hang out, snorkel, have lunch and cocktails, and get some sun. Oh, did I mention the cruise is “clothing optional?”

“Yea, haha,” I said. “Crazy, horny old men.”

It made me think about life and how we sometimes need someone to push us along. We get so caught up in our routines and get comfortable or lazy. Some of us let life pass us by and never take risks.

“Wow, look at everyone following the naked guys,” my friend from New York said.

“Come on girl, you can do it,” her owner begged.

“Pleeeease.”

Then it happened. Two gorgeous guys, a couple, were suddenly walking along the sandbar just as naked as could be. Then two more. Then a few old guys. Then a few more. Then another. Did I miss something?

Were we supposed to get naked on the sandbar? I didn’t see that in our itinerary.

Mr. Universe

T

he first warm day after that random cold front last that we had last week in the middle of May week, I stopped by Outwrite Bookstore to check out their event of the evening appropriately called “A sneak peak at Mr. Universe”. I guess I was on drag time when I walked in considering they had already started the presentation which was a scene from the new play, Mr. Universe, that opens May 26th at 7 Stages. Standing before the crowd, was this New Orleans jazz player looking brother as if we’re on some corner of the famous Bourbon Street---but of course, we’re constantly reminded of where we are as the life size windows surrounds the back of him and the familiar passerbyers are constantly ‘peeking’ in like the folks do when taping a segment of Good Morning America. The saxophonist paused, checked out the hottie that decided to stand next to him, took a quick swig from the metal liquor flask he pulled out from coat pocket (yea, at this point the audience were in a deep silence cause half of us were also checking out this hottie up and down and the other half wished they had a sip of whatever it was he was dranking).

Ok, next thing you know he started to take off his clothes down to his hot white tight briefs. His body was RIGHT!!!! Then this hottie, looking like a cross between Captain American and He Man started to apply body blood across his chest and stomach in a stabbing motion. Blood or not, the crowd on the inside AND the outside were frozen…stiff? (yes, pun for some I’m sure). So, I’m thinking apparently he must be Mr. Universe. Then this drunk ass lady came out of nowhere, sees the hottie and asks “what the hell happened here?”, then 2 drunk drag queens came out from the back of the store talking that drunk jargon and carrying ons before they notice Mr. Universe. One of them wanted to take him home to clean him up and take care of him (un huh, I bet she did), the lady was like “who would want to take THIS home with blood all over him? “, the other drag queen quickly yells out “I do!” then they proceeded with their scene. It was really good, but the scene was only a teaser. Plus I can’t tell you TOO MUCH about this dark comedy that also involves a murder mystery---In other words child, you’ll see me on the FRONT ROW when they open!

There was a brief chat with the crowd and director, Del somebody, Immediately afterwards, the actors playing the roles of those contrasting drag queens, Mr.

Universe and the director headed over to Blakes for a quick cocktail (oh, and of course I tagged along too to ask just a couple of questions and just ONE cocktail).

Brent: So tell us about your role (s).

Don Finney: Welllllll….(sip of her dirty martini, speaking in his well seasoned and sassy ‘theatre’ voice). I play a drug dealing drag queen with a bad drug habbit by the name of Judy. She’s very messed up and not a very nice person. She pretty much hates hers b/c of a lot of rejection in her life, but when she does drag…..she feels pretty.

Dolye Reynolds: I play Vic who is the nice drag queen although my character doesn’t live in drag like Judy.

My character is very nurturing, she was married to a woman and had a child. She’s now a waiter by day, and occasional drag by night. And I’m the one who first decided to take Mr. Universe home to care for him.

Brian Kirchner: According to the script, I play “the perfect man in the world—muscular, beautiful, half naked (plus a couple of nude scenes) and a mute”--the mute parts adds to the mystery of this. Oh, and he seduces all the characters AND the audience (don’t forget to put the dollar bill in my G string.

Del Hamilton: I’m the director, but I also played the role of Vic from the popular 1987 version that was done at 7 Stages. Would you like a cocktail Brent?

Brent: Hell yea. Ok so how long have you been in the theatre and what roles are you most proud of? .. Jack and coke please.

Jennifer Tilly:

The Exclusive David Magazine Interview

J

ennifer Tilly does what she wants. Being a Hollywood starlet for thirty years allows her that freedom. She has paid her dues.

“When I was younger I did a lot of roles because I had to pay the rent or needed new plumbing,” said Tilly.

“Now I don’t have to do things for money. So anything you see me do is because I think it is fun, or I just want to do it.”

Tilly, who now lives in Los Angeles and Las Vegas with her boyfriend Phil, is an Academy Awardnominee for her role as Olive in Woody Allen’s “Bullets Over Broadway” (1994). Her sister, Meg Tilly, is also an Academy Award-nominated actress for her role in “Agnes of God” (1985).

Starring in countless films such as “The Fabulous Baker Boys” (1989), “Liar Liar” (1997), and “Bride of Chucky” (1998) and as a guest star in numerous television shows, Jennifer Tilly is no stranger to the camera. Flirty, sassy, and confident, she really knows how to win over audiences.

In recent years she has also become an accomplished poker player, and she’s learned that happiness comes from doing things she likes to do.

David Magazine: How do you like Atlanta? Do you have any Atlanta connections?

Jennifer: Oh, I love Atlanta! A few of my good friends live here. I used to come out here a lot because my parents lived in Alpharetta, and I did an interview once with Jezebel Magazine.

David Magazine: What can you tell us about your role in the upcoming season of “Drop Dead Diva?” Will it be recurring?

Jennifer: I play Ginny in one episode. She’s an actress and a little kooky. I’m hired by Fred (Ben Feldman) to

play his mom. Fred is an angel who watches over the main character, Jane Bingum (Brooke Elliot). Fred’s girlfriend, Stacy (April Bowlby), who doesn’t know he is an angel, wants to meet his parents, so Fred gets roped into it. My character arrives and gets excited about the free alcohol. I drink a little too much white wine and start saying inappropriate things to Fred’s girlfriend like, ‘You’re a little old to be a model,’ or ‘You should really think about your future prospects.’

So basically I’m the mother from Hell. Then it works out because Stacy says to Fred, ‘We never need to see your mom again.’ So I doubt I’ll be in any future episodes as his mom. I wouldn’t mind doing more episodes. It’s such a fun show, and everyone is so cute and nice. Then when I was reading the script I realized it was filmed in Georgia, and my step-mom lives here.

She was like, ‘I want you to come out and see my house in Peachtree City.’ So it was very serendipitous.

It’s so beautiful here. Her son is an airline pilot based in Atlanta, so she moved out to be closer to him.

David Magazine: You’ve been acting in movies and television since 1983, and your breakthrough film role was in “The Fabulous Baker Boys” in 1989.

Do you prefer film or television?

Jennifer: I like film better. You’re in and out. I love low budget movies because I have such a short attention span. You can usually shoot those in ten to eighteen days. I’m used to trying to figure out a way to cheat. I’m always astounded when I do a major motion picture at how slow the pace is. It’s like, ‘Now let’s get a close-up of the cat and a close-up of the ceiling and a close-up of the fan.’ I’m like, ‘Oh my God, can we please move on to the next scene?’ With television, I’ve done two series: ‘Key West’ and davidatlanta 27

‘Out of Practice.’ I really felt trapped doing both of those. It’s funny because all an actor wants is to have a job and be adored, and with a series you have an ideal situation , but for me all I could think of is how I could get out. It’s like people who are in a relationship for a long time and decide to get married. All of a sudden they are like, ‘Oh my God I can’t breathe.’ It’s exactly the same as living with the person unmarried, but now it has a title. I do prefer doing movies, but it’s also fun to come be a guest on a television show.

David Magazine: You provide the voice of Bonnie Swanson in ‘Family Guy’ and a number of other voiceovers. When I searched Bonnie videos on YouTube, the famous lesbian kiss scene came up.

What’s it like playing Bonnie?

Jennifer: I started doing the voice of Bonnie in 1999, and then the show got cancelled. Then four or five years went by and people discovered the show again on DVD. That’s the great thing about doing voiceover work. With voiceovers you never get older, and it doesn’t matter what you look like. I just did a pilot for a nighttime cartoon at Fox by the guy who did ‘Space Ghost.’ I’ve been doing Bonnie, who was always pregnant in her scenes, a long time. I used to come in and do one or two lines, and one day I came in and asked Seth (MacFarlane) when there would be a

I usually play character parts, and I think that has played to the longevity in my career. If you’re just the pretty one, you can only do that for so long. whole episode about Bonnie. He said, ‘When Bonnie has the baby, we’ll do an episode about her.’ I said, ‘In other words, when the moon explodes.’ Then he said, ‘Haha, that’s right. Bonnie is never having that baby!’

Then one day I came in and it was time. I never read the script ahead of time because I’m not a dedicated professional. Bonnie was having the baby. It was so fun for a while playing Bonnie. Seth was going crazy with her. She was dabbling in lesbianism and had an affair with a French guy. She was reveling in her new body. Then I went back a few months later and he was like, ‘Here’s your one line.’ And I was like, ‘Thank God, things are back to normal.’

David Magazine: How do you like doing voiceover work?

Jennifer: I love it. I’ve been doing a lot of it, but about six years ago I got really obsessed with poker. My 28 davidatlanta

boyfriend is a professional poker player. Every time I get an offer for a role or voiceover, I always think about whether I’d rather play poker. I did an episode of ‘Family Guy’ a few weeks ago, and Seth (MacFarlane) put in a funny line for Bonnie. A character asks, ‘Hey, are we going to see you around?’ and Bonnie says, ‘Yea, probably. I have to go do this voiceover work to pay for my gambling addiction.’ I was like, ‘That’s really cute, Seth. Thanks a lot.’

David Magazine: Who have been some of your most memorable movie co-stars and/or directors?

Jennifer: ‘Bound’ and ‘Bullets over Broadway’ have been my very favorite movies that I’ve done. I love working with Joey Pantoliano and Gina Gershon, my costars in ‘Bound.’ Gina, Joey and me were like the gruesome threesome. We had the best time. I’ve actually worked with Joey on a bunch of other things since then, and I’m really good friends with Gina.

She comes over. I loved working on ‘Bullets Over Broadway.’ Even thought it was a high budget film, Woody Allen, our director, shot it like a low budget film. We never had to repeat anything. He just put the camera on these little tracks and went around and captured the scenes. He loved when things went wrong. If a chandelier broke, he’d never say ‘cut.’ He just wanted us to deal with it. A lot of the takes used in the films were scenes that were not working out. Like there was one scene where I could not get my cigarette lit, and I turned to John Cusack, who played my boyfriend, and said, ‘Would you mind?’ I also loved working with Chazz Palminteri because he was loose and improvised a lot. When you have good chemistry with people, it’s a lot of fun. I also loved working with Jim Carrey on ‘Liar Liar.’ He is so talented and so fun to work with. However, on a Jim Carrey movie the only one who is allowed to improvise is Jim. I think he’s a comic genius, and he’s very generous. He would give me things to do, like on our first scene when he was leaving the room he goes, ‘Jennifer, as I go out, grab my ass.’ So I did.

David Magazine: Your voice is so recognizable to horror fans as the ‘Bride of Chucky.’

What was that experience like for you?

Jennifer: I love those movies. Don Mancini created those characters, and he’s a good friend of mine. When we did ‘Bride of Chucky,’ he decided the reason it was so popular was because I was in it in the flesh, and of course my character, Tiffany, dies and turns into a doll. Don just wracked his brains thinking of a way to get me back into the film. He came up with this parody where I was playing Jennifer Tilly, the actress, who was playing Tiffany the doll. When I found out he was doing this I said to him, ‘You’ve got to make me the Hollywood bitch from Hell.’ When he turned in the first draft, Universal was not pleased. They thought it was too funny, too gay and had way too much Jennifer

He just decided to make it more campy. I think we’re getting ready to gear up and make another ‘Chucky’ movie.

David Magazine: Were you on set during the filming of ‘Bride of Chucky?’ How does that work?

Jennifer: No, what we did was go in and record all the voiceovers. Then the puppeteers went in and put

Now I’m really lucky because I’m in the position to only do the roles I want to do. I turn down a lot of roles because I’d rather play poker. Now if Scorsese calls, that’s different. I would miss the World Series of Poker to do something with him.

I used to eat Fritos and drink margaritas and not exercise. Now I’m reading all these articles on longevity and how to prevent Alzheimer’s, and they say one way is to do things that challenge you. I think poker stretches your mind. It encompasses everything.

It’s not just about cards. I’ve gotten into this whole metaphysical thing. There have been studies done that say people can influence the way dice fall. I don’t want to sound like a whack job, but I feel you can kind of influence the way the cards come up when you enter another dimension when you play poker. Sometimes when you are so in the zone, you can see other people’s cards and what they are thinking. I’ve been reading all these books about how to achieve peak performance or how to enhance your psychic power, as well as poker strategy. It’s like chess, which is also not an easy game either.

Jennifer Tilly will be appearing in an upcoming episode on Season Three of “Drop Dead Diva,” which premieres June 19 on Lifetime.

David Magazine: Do you regret turning down any parts?

Jennifer: Not really. If I like the way a part is written, I usually agree to do it. One time when I was first starting out, I went to audition in this guy’s basement.

I didn’t even have my Screen Actors’ Guild card at the time. I got an agent who said, ‘You don’t want to do this, they are just going to exploit you.’ The director kept calling me saying he wanted me in the movie. The more he called, the more I thought he was a weirdo, which he is, but I will always regret not doing it. The movie was ‘Repo Man,’ and the director was Alex Cox, who also went on to make ‘Sid and Nancy,’ which was an amazing film. As you can see by my resume, I’ve pretty much done everything I was offered.

David Magazine: You’ve done very well as a professional poker player. Why do you do it?
