lready proven as a talented, sought after songwriter and revered platinumselling artist, Marsha Ambrosius is meeting the next challenge in her already impressive musical career by reinventing herself as a solo artist with her J Records debut disc LATE NIGHTS & EARLY MORNINGS.

Hailing from Liverpool, England, fans first got a taste of Marsha’s talent as the singing half of the duo Floetry. Their 2000 debut Floetic produced signature singles like “Say Yes” and “Getting Late” as well as four Grammy nods. Following the 2005 release of their second studio album, Flo’Ology, the ladies veered creatively and personally. While the split was difficult, Marsha continued to build a name for herself as a songwriter and producer, creating “Butterflies” for the late Michael Jackson and other hits for artists such as Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Jamie Foxx and Nas. She’s been nominated for a total of six Grammys and has been honored by BMI as their Songwriter of the Year.

Over the years, Marsha has stayed relevant as an artist via touring, writing/producing and mixtapes like 2007’s Neo Soul is Dead, 2008’s Yours Truly and 2010’s Yours Sincerely. She also appeared as a featured artist on projects from Patti Labelle, The Game, Busta Rhymes, Jamie Foxx and Earth, Wind & Fire, among others. Eventually, Marsha signed with Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Records however a much-buzzed about solo debut never materialized due to creative glitches. Equipped with plenty of her own talent, she found herself being given songs from producers that were “great but not songs that made sense in relation to each other.” Marsha calls her sound “honest and consistent” and it was important for her to make an album with an overall cohesive sound. She explains, “I think with an album everything has to make sense, like ‘Where is this story going?’”

But that wasn’t the only situation posing a challenge for Marsha. A basketball player since childhood, when her music career took off, her diet remained the same as when she was regularly active.

Constantly on the road touring and promoting wasn’t conducive to a healthy diet and resulted in her gaining 70 pounds in just one year. She finally got serious about her health and lost the weight safely and slowly over about a two-year period.

Now at a strong place mentally and physically, Marsha’s ready to present her sound to the world. The first single, “Hope She Cheats on You (With a Basketball Player),” is an anthem that women and men can relate to. Marsha explains, “It’s the reality of a bad break up. We wanna be decent human beings and say the right thing, you know, ‘I wish you well.’ But this is ‘Everything that could go wrong for him I want it to because my ego is bruised and I’m acting out.’”

There’ve been many songs written about heartbreak, but Marsha’s approach to “Hope She Cheats on You” gets in your face rather than plays the victim.

LATE NIGHTS & EARLY MORNINGS is destined to be a classic, as Marsha offers a candid glimpse of her life and perspectives as a woman.

Inspired by musical icons like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Prince, she concedes there is an overall male influence in her songwriting, such as the assertive sentiments heard on hits like “Say Yes.” She explains, “My pen and my point of view has a certain aggression to it because I’ve listened to a lot of male influenced music, which I think makes me one of the most outspoken writers out here. Sometimes as a woman you don’t wanna say what’s on your mind for fear of being judged. But why wouldn’t I say it like that if that’s how I felt?” Musical peers recruited to contribute to the project include Alicia Keys, a reunion with Dre and Vidal (producers of “Say Yes”), Just Blaze and Focus.

While her success in the industry is already solidified, Marsha knows it’s never easy to win over fans as a solo artist. Fortunately, she says, “It’s like being thrown in the deep end. ‘Okay I have to swim?

ow that the evil Snow Queen and her evil spell is gone (atleast for now I hear), it’s time for Mayhem in Midtown! But like a scene from Alice in Wonderland, I decided it’s time for a smoke break. The Caterpillar, played by legendary Chynna Fox, willed me to stop by as she gets dressed for the All American Goddess Pageant. She knew I was about to get ready for a show too (for Princess Charles’ Fashionista show at Burkharts)...but Alice always made time to go and see the damn Caterpillar for a smoke break right quick. “So, who are you rooting for to win the pageant” I politely ask as the room fills with blue and pink smoke. “Honey Envy Van Michaels of course!

She’s a Glamazon!” she says. “Oh yea, that makes sense (cough cough)” I said allowing blue smoke to be released through my nostrils as I decided to sit on a giant mushroom. There on that shroom I begin to reflect on how every since I’ve known Chynna Fox, she’s been getting ready for a show! Miss Fox is the creator of the show that I do every Saturday in Little 5 Points at a place called Tijuana Garage. She did a great job creating this show because it’s been going on for 4 years now and trust me honey, that’s a LONG time for a drag show with a growing crowd! She’ll be in Atlanta to host the show for 6 more weeks before she returns back to her new home in Canada. Multiple title holder Envy Van Michaels is also on the show and…wait…

THIS JUST IN!!!...She DID win! She’s now the new Southeast All American Goddess at Large! And also on the cast is the OTHER winner, Cartier Paris. Ms Paris is now Miss Georgia All American Goddess. Envy is also a former Miss Georgia All American Goddess (Whew! I need a drink of water after pronouncing all these TITLES!!!). Legendary Lauren LeMasters, Latin Diva Alexia Markova and newcomer Tanyla Cassadine are the other whores in the show!

But like I said, I had to perform at Burkharts that night. I always have a lot of fun backstage when I’m there. I love to hear the Black Barbie of Atlanta Destiny Brooks and the sexy glamazon Shavonna B. Brooks kee kee while CONSTANTLY reminding each other that the other is a man! Princess just sit in her royal chair as the “face painter” comes in and does his masterpiece on miss thing’s mug! Angelica D’ Paige is always pretty but tonight she looked SICKNANG! And I think she had a ‘glow’ about her… probably because her inner emcee skills have been 14 davidatlanta

released to the universe as butterflies as she spread her wings with hosting duties on Tuesdays AND Fridays. ..in other words, she thank she allllllllll that now! Lol! I’m teasing. LOVE you Angelica! Oh and I’m sure Princess Charles is really feeling her royal oats now that she also has two shows (Thursdays and Saturdays).

Now sometimes I, a special guest, like to join in on all the mayhem and I…wait… Oh shiiit!... Wtf is that?!!!

Oh, that’s just Shavonna walking around naked. Ok so what I was saying, backstage is fun even though the other guest Isabella Diamante was stressing me out about some damn duck tape! (check out my interview with her btw--- 2 previous article ago). I love how cutie pie bartenders Alex, James and Chris are ALWAYS fighting over me (shut up Charles!).

Speaking of cutie, local singer Kirk Kyland is hosting karaoke on Mondays while another former contestant Ms. Darlene host Wednesdays. Burkharts is doing even more this year besides giving away free popcorn, they’re bringing in other polished performers and other popular gals like Miss Tyra Sanchez, 2nd Winner of the RuPaul Drag Races Show.

Speaking of RuPaul’s Season 3 Drag Races show and “Mayhem”…guess where YOU need to be on Monday night? Child at Einsteins in Midtown off Juniper every Monday for the Monday Mayhem viewing show with three hosts; Season 3 Contestant from Atlanta, Ms Mariah Paris Balenciaga (another glass of water please someone), Season’s 2 contestant from ATlanTA GEOrgiA, Nicole Paige Brooks, AND somehow, they managed to throw ME in the damn mix. Oh Lawd this will be fun. Plus it’s an early show (8pm…ish). This announcement is also a warning just in case you were planning on dinning there on Monday…you might not want to bring little Jimmy (but by all means, bring BIG Jimmy). Get ready Einsteins, it’s going to be Mayhem on Mondays!

I was fascinated to read about others experiences in coming out to their families a few months back and have thought about since. It’s not really a topic of conversation with others, yet it does have a profound impact for the rest of a person’s life. Accolades to you! It is always joyful to hear of easier coming out transitions and loving outcomes. Coming out to self and others is oftentimes a very tumultuous process that can take several years and sometimes never. There are many, many variables that impact the people involved such as the

I think how a person treats his family is a reflection of how he or she would treat you. If you can’t treat family with respect, how can you treat others any better? Any thoughts here?

others, you are correct in that our families are our first teachers of how to socialize with others. However, some families do not have the qualities and abilities to socialize their children 100% well. I’m being extremely diplomatic here. Therefore, there is great variance for any single LGBT child to first process for self his or her sexual orientation, and then to choose whether coming out to family is in his or her best interests, and sometimes the interests of his or her parents.

There are way too many underlying variables that impact ones decision-making abilities when it comes to families.

Does this impact relationships with other? Certainly. Does it mean that everyone who has a poor relationship with their families will not be capable of deep and meaningful relationships with others? Absolutely not. We are incredibly pliable beings, continually learning and growing. Some people are most fortunate to be able to say that their families are the backbone of their lives, whereas others may refer to friends or another social support network.

The saying “don’t throw the baby out with the wash water” comes to mind here because it points out the importance of the baby over the surrounding circumstances. It is how one overcomes and grows from all these circumstances that will define him or her.

Politics of Porn

denying that Michael Lucas is a dominant force in gay porn today.

He is the

president of New York’s largest gay-adultfilm company, Lucas Entertainment, and its biggest star.

But arguably, it

isn’t his films that are getting the most ink in media these days.

Michael’s

controversial commentary on everything from pedophilia, bare-backing and antiSemitism in the gay community are what seem to grabbing the most headlines. We spoke with Michael to discuss why he has chosen to be so vocal about his views and how mixing politics with porn is affecting his porn empire.

What is rattling your cage? Is there an issue that you feel particularly adamant about today?

I define myself as a Jewish atheist so no religious issues bother me. Politically, I am deeply worried about the situation in the Middle East, the increasingly aggressive posture of Iran and the growing worldwide hostility towards Israel. Here in America, my main concern is the stalemate of vitally important issues that comes from the absolute polarization between the two political blocks.

It’s rare for an adult film star to use his celebrity as a platform to express his thoughts and opinions.

Why have you chosen to be so open?

I have always been vocal in expressing my opinions on issues I care about deeply, even opinions which are not so popular. If my popularity as a porn star gives my opinions additional resonance, then all the better.

What has influenced your activism?

Life. Growing up in communist class rooms in my native Russia, I directly experienced anti-Semitic discrimination and the hurt and the shame that comes from it. The security of a Jewish homeland where none of this will ever happen again has become deeply important to me. I also read history and follow current events and travel a lot.

Did being gay in communist Russia add to your struggle?

Yes. Russia is both anti-Semitic and homophobic, so I got it from both sides. Such discrimination will either break you or make you a fighter. Fortunately, I became a fighter.

Has being so vocal hurt or helped your porn business?

I actually don’t care. I speak out on certain issues because I feel strongly about them and that’s quite apart from my work as a businessman.

Does it upset you to read the negative comments that are rampant all over the web?

Some negative responses do upset me, some amuse me.

The many positive responses encourage me.

What do you think is the biggest misperception about you?

That I am a cold and distant person. I am actually very warm, funny and sensitive. I care deeply about my friends and family.

Michael, are you anti-Muslim?

Yes. I believe all organized religion throughout history has been a force for the bad. I believe that whenever

religion has influenced politics, the world has become a worse place. Most Muslim countries prove this point. Their leaders are hypocritical and corrupt and its the people who suffer, especially the women and minorities. Is it a coincidence that the ten countries that still impose the death penalty for same sex relationships are all Muslim? Even in the worst days of the old Soviet Union, gay people were not sentenced to death. And, of course, I get personally mad at them whenever I have to take off my shoes at airport security.

Do you truly believe the gay community is increasingly anti-Israel and anti-Semitic?

In my mind, being anti Israel is just a new way of being anti- Semitic. And yes, the gay community does sometimes make unthinking alliances with supposedly progressive forces who think Muslim countries are nuts just because Israel exists.

In today’s world, where naked pictures are all over the web for free, is porn still profitable?

Most free porn (except what is stolen) is actually crap. That’s good enough for some people but there are still plenty who enjoy really good porn made by professionals.

Is that why Lucas Entertainment is now sponsoring gay tours of Israel?

I sponsor gay tours to Israel because Israel is a beautiful country and gays and lesbians have a wonderful time there. Everybody who traveled with me last year loved it. My next tour leaves May 11th.

Queerty labeled your political opinions on Israel as virulent, frightening Islamophobia. Your reaction?

I think if Queerty calls you names, its sort of a compliment.

Do you support pedophilia?

Of course not. This question probably comes from a column I wrote in The Advocate, which was misunderstood by some. In it, I made a clear distinction between pedophiles and child molesters. Pedophile inclinations are much more widespread than we realize but most pedophiles are in control of their feelings and never touch a child. I also made it quite clear I firmly believe that child molestation is a crime.

What are your feelings about President Obama?

I think he was a much better campaigner then a president. As a President, he appears weak and indecisive. Decisiveness is a very important quality in a President.

What government leader has come closest to meeting your ideal?

Winston Churchill; for his bravery when all Europe surrendered to the Nazis. I admire his perseverance because he didn’t let his country fall while the rest of Europe submitted. He united his country and was a real fighter. And he was one of the few people who knew Hitler’s true nature form the very beginning.

How did your colleagues in porn react to your opposition to bareback films?

I chose early on to follow my ethics and always promote safe sex in my films. Those who produce bareback movies don’t like that I so vocally condemn what they do. I actually think that their argument that bareback movies don’t do harm because “porn is just

What bothers you most about the current state of the adult film business?

People who are illegally downloading my films. I consider it stealing. There is no difference between shoplifting clothing from a store and downloading an adult film for free. It costs a lot of time, hard work, and money to produce these films.

When will you turn 40?

Next year. March 10th, 2012. I think I am the only person in the industry who doesn’t lie about his age.

How much longer do you plan to remain in the business?

I have no plans to retire anytime soon. I actually consider 40 to be quite young. I also consider 50 to be young. It’s all about how you feel and how you make other people feel about yourself.

Can you see any of today’s young stars following your footsteps and launching their own porn business?

I am sure some will try, but I don’t see other companies opening. It’s very hard to build a brand in today’s environment.

How has porn changed since you launched Lucas Entertainment?

It’s become a complicated business. There is much more competition and many more different ways to reach the customer. It took forty years to go from 8mm reels to VHS tapes to dvd. Today, there are dozens of ways to deliver the product and new ones pop up regularly. You really need to stay on top of it.

If you were elected President of Porn, what’s the first action you would take to clean up the biz?

I would outlaw barebacking.

What would your detractors be most surprised to learn about you?

I don’t want to surprise them, so let me skip this question.

Where would you like to see yourself in five years?

Where I am now: in New York, with my friends, running my business. I’m a very happy person.

a degenerada ‘Proposición 8’ ha traído de cabeza a la comunidad LGBT de California desde que se aprobó su admisión en la papeleta electoral un mes de Noviembre. Luego, el voto de minorías, inclinó la balanza en nuestra contra. Desde entonces, la batalla por diversos frentes para la anulación legal de semejante aberración ha supuesto uno de los momentos más trascendentales de la historia de los derechos civiles en Estados Unidos.

Semanas antes de que la Corte Suprema de California emita su veredicto, después de haber estado escuchando a ambas partes, la agredida y la discrimante, digámoslo de una vez, un par de profesores de la Universidad Pepperdine, Douglas W. Kmiec y Shelley Ross Saxer, se han atrevido a lanzar una propuesta que no puede dejar a nadie indiferente, que no satisface a nadie en teoría, pero que en teoría a nadie ofende. Ustedes juzguen Lo que ambos profesores proponen es que el Matrimonio sencillamente deje de existir como figura legal. Cada Iglesia, según sus usos, costumbres y evoluciones casaría a parejas de sexo opuesto o del mismo sexo, pero esto no tendría efecto legal alguno, mientras que tanto parejas gay, como parejas heterosexuales tendrían idénticos derechos y obligaciones ante la ley, dentro del ámbito de cada estado, y supuestamente a nivel federal.

Francamente, a mí no me disgusta, pero tampoco me hace ninguna gracia. ¿No sería esto otra forma de discriminación? Acompañadme en la duda...

I found a little bit of heaven on a plate.

ast Sunday I woke up with a hangover the size of a Macy’s Day balloon and a phone call from a friend who apparently forgot that I do not rise from my crypt before the crack of noon. The night before I went to a Luau going away party, drank waaaay too many Pooka Pooka’s and the pounding in my skull rang to the beat of Pearly Shells sung quite well by Don Ho. But then I digress, I picked up the phone and my dear friend who DID NOT drink Saturday night wanted to have brunch at Rosebud, always wanted to go to Rosebud, had made reservations at Rosebud and I needed to get dressed.

Now I have been to this wonderful Morningside establishment on many occasions, so I knew my way around the menu and decided on several dishes and some (fix me the hell up cocktails) before we arrived. At 2 O’Clock the place was jamming with the locals and our hostess said it would be just a few minutes before our table was ready, at that point two seats opened up at the bar which as you may know by now is the perfect place to sit and people watch. Jeff who is the resident Maestro of Cocktail concoctions made my favorite, aptly titled ”The Orange Thing,” Vodka, fresh squeezed orange juice, orange Pellegrino, and a splash of Gran Marnier, these drinks gone down as fast as Pooka Pooka’s so please drive responsibly. My companion opted for the “Bloody Bart”, house made Bloody mix

with a spicy shot of Srirachi that gives it quite the kick needed.

After our second round we felt it was time to put the feedbag on as it were so I proceeded to order the perfect breakfast for us. First and foremost in my opinion what you should have if never eaten here is The Big Nasty, A sandwich with Fried Chicken, Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, and smoked Cheddar, it takes three people to bang this out but I managed without too much assistance, my partner had for starters the Brunch Corn Dogs, made with link sausages and served with house made pickles and truffle mustard, plus (and I’m quoting from the menu) “Those Fries are Ridiculous”……..Bacon, Jalapeno, Marrow Gravy, topped with a fried egg. Dear God, I found a little bit of heaven on a plate. For her main course she opted for the Kobe Burger, which is important on any Brunch menu and believe me you don’t have to go to any of those “hip” burger joints to get a good sandwich. You come right here to Rosebud for that simply because you have far more options than “those” places.

Chef and Owner Ron Eyester took over Rosebud a year ago and turned this restaurant into a neighbor hood favorite. Ron has embraced the concept of locally grown foods and we like that! Also keep in mind that Brunch here is not just for Sunday’s anymore. You can get served Brunch on Saturday’s, Mondays, and Fridays. So you never have to worry about hangovers again!

grew up surrounded by extremely closed-minded people. In my hometown, if you were dating someone slightly older than you it was taboo, let alone someone from a different race. And the gays? Honey, there weren’t any. It isn’t that they didn’t exist, it just wasn’t safe. It wasn’t an option.

I remember meeting someone very beautiful my first day of high school. He was new in town. His father had relocated the family for a job, and he was like nobody I had ever seen before. He was over six feet tall, with a set of perfect legs, gorgeous heels, an extensive collection of wigs, false eye lashes, and glitter, glitter, glitter. The day I met him, he was in the woman’s restroom changing from his cargo pants, skate shoes, and hooded sweatshirt, into a hot pink, pleather miniskirt, lime-green fishnet stockings, black six-inch platforms, and a mid-drift t-shirt that said, “I love NYC” in red rhinestones.

I walked in the restroom and was shocked to see him changing in there, just out in the open. He looked up at me and said, “Hey girl, do you think you could give me a hand?” He held up a choker necklace. “Sure,” I said.

I walked over to him, grabbed the choker, and put it on for him. “Thanks!” he said. Then he reached deep down into his book bag and pulled out some hot pink lip gloss. He grabbed my cheeks, told me to “pucker”, and applied a generous amount of his strawberry flavored lipgloss to my lips. “Perfect,” he said. The bell rang, he gathered up all of his things in lightning speed, threw them into his book bag and ran out the door to class. I looked in the mirror at my lips, smiled, and went to class.

When I arrived to my first class, I was happy to see him. We had first block together. I sat down beside him.

He grabbed my hand, and said, “I could paint your nails sometime you know.” My teacher yelled at him to be quiet and to stop disturbing the class. I looked up and everyone was starring at him. They were whispering, exchanging notes, laughing... Before I knew it, the teacher had lost control of the class and told my new

friend to go to the principal’s office.

The next day I rushed to class, excited to see my new friend and anxious to hear about his trip to the principal’s office. He wasn’t there. I waited for him in the woman’s restroom every morning for the rest of the week. He never showed.

The following week, he finally came back. He was quiet. I was asking him a million questions while he put on his dress and makeup. He said nothing. “You could paint my nails after school if you want.” He said, “I’m busy.” We walked quietly to class together, sat down beside each other, and did that same routine for the rest of the week.

That Friday morning I was walking to the woman’s restroom, when I heard a screaming coming from across the hall from the men’s restroom. I heard banging. Everyone started accumulating outside of the men’s restroom. Teachers started sprinting down the hall to see what all of the commotion was about. The principal and a few teachers went into the restroom, while three boys ran out. I heard one of the teachers yell, “Call 911!”

I stood there, for what seemed like hours. The ambulance arrived, and the paramedics rushed in. Out from the bathroom, soaked in blood, and covered in bruises, was my new friend. Unconscious. Not moving.

I never saw him again.

He wanted to change in the woman’s restroom because he felt safe. The day he was asked to leave class, the principal told him that he had to dress like a “man”, and could no longer use the woman’s restroom. Apparently, some parents, teachers, and students felt that his wardrobe was too much of a distraction and prevented students from learning. The morning the ambulance came, he was changing in the men’s restroom. Some boys didn’t like what they saw, so they beat him up.

They never got sent to the principal’s office. That year

my beautiful friend committed suicide.

After that, I was terrified to explore my sexuality, or be “different”. I kept my sexuality to myself for a while, and I tried to appear as “normal” as possible. I did really well in school, I had tons of friends, I was the captain of the basketball team, editor of the newspaper, and a member of the french and art club. I had a steady boyfriend-- but then one day I decided that I was sick of hiding.

I graduated from high school, broke up with my boyfriend, went to art school, and got myself a girlfriend.

I think about that boy often... about how beautiful he was, and how much I admired his confidence. I promised myself a long time ago that I would never judge anyone based on their race, sexuality, or gender identity. Lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, black, white, brown, purple, blue, or yellow-- we are all beautiful.

Here in Atlanta, one of the gayest cities in the United States, you would think that our community would not judge individuals based on their sexuality-- that is not the case. In a city that has twenty-nine gay bars, and the fourth largest Pride celebration (after New York City, Amsterdam, and San Francisco), it is a mystery why the presence of overall unity within the community is no where to be found.

When I think about pride, specifically gay pride, I think of a utopia (perfection in law, politics, etc.).

Most utopias fail to deal with a number of issues in the contemporary, globalized, multicultural society in which we live. For example, there are very few comprehensive responses to discrimination or oppression of subordinate cultural groups. Pride is based on three premises: individuals should be proud of their sexual orientation and gender identity, diversity is a gift, and our sexual orientation and gender identity are inherent and will not be intentionally altered. Pride

may look great on paper, but I am a firm believer in the saying, “actions speak louder than words”. Pride may suggest that we want to embrace what the movement was founded on and create a system where perfection in law and politics exists, but we will never see or achieve any of those things without one very crucial element; acceptance.

As a bisexual woman living in Atlanta, I can tell you that I have not been accepted by the LBGT community.

When I first arrived in Atlanta, two years ago, I was dating a woman. People assumed that I was a lesbian and they were very accepting. Sure, there was the occasional “carpet-muncher” joke, but I really felt welcome and I was honestly very proud to be in a relationship with a woman who I cared a lot for.

We broke up a year later, and I started dating again.

When people would see me out with a woman, they wouldn’t think twice, but when they saw me out with a man they would say things like “trader”, “fake”, or they would come up to me in the middle of my date and say, “So you like cock now, eh?” or “You’re just like all those other straight girls...” What does it matter? Since when does the level of respect that we receive have anything to do with who we are sleeping with? I am Katie. I am not defined by my gender or my sexuality.

How can we ask the rest of the world to accept our community and support us in the fight for equality, if we can’t even love and accept each other within our own community?

Don’t waste your time trying to hide or defend yourself.

Instead of wasting our time worrying about who likes cock and who eats pussy, we should be investing that energy into coming together. For those of you who feel like you are judged, know that you are not alone.

Whoever you are, whatever you are, know that there are people out there who will love and accept you just because you are-- you.

EPISODE THIRTY-THREE:

“I’m Just Not That Into You” Once upon a time Luke went to a palm reader in Gwinnett County.

The palm reader told him, “You must move to Atlanta, Luke, for you will find love there.”

Last week, an old man threw a drink in Luke’s face. As a result, Luke had dropped his new line: “I’m just not that into you.”

This week on Friday, Luke left his fantastic, high-ceilinged apartment in a large erection of glass on the corner of Peachtree and he drove up the Buford Highway to Chapparal. Luke arrived just in time for ‘Got Leche’ with Luis Chiruco. Luke was in a festive mood and he went right up to the bar to order Jose Cuervo Tequila and a Dos Equis. He propped himself up at the bar and looked out over the throngs of men that filled the nightclub. Luke licked his lips, the Latino men were sumptuous and delicious, especially Luis Chiruco but, ten minutes, four shots and two beers later, Luke was approached by a short rotund man he did not find attractive.

This little fat man said, “Hola!” He asked Luke, “You’re cute. What’s your name? May I buy you a drink?”

Luke tossed another thimble of tequila down the back of his throat, “No thank you.”

“Oh?” This little fat man asked, “Why not?”

“Dude,” said Luke. “I’m just not that into you.”

The next day on Saturday, Luke walked up the steep driveway that lead to Tripp’s Bar. At the entrance, Kevin Gray; the man in charge of the popular bar and grill; graciously welcomed Luke with a warm handshake and a smile.

Kevin Gray said, “Good afternoon.

Welcome to the Italian Party.”

Tripp’s Bar; they had put up decorations that evoked the charm and elegance of Venice, Milan and Rome.

Kevin knew his customers well and he guided Luke to the bar. Luke found the service at Tripp’s sublime and succinct, he ordered a martini and, as he nibbled on the olive, he was approached by a tall, skinny man dressed in a pink shirt with an orange bowtie.

This emaciation said, “Buon Pomeriggio.”

He asked Luke, “You’re are just fabulous. May I call you Marco?”

Luke shook his head, “That’s not my name.”

“Dude,” said Luke. “I’m just not that into you.”

Later that same night, Luke journeyed to Jungle. He parallel parked illegally somewhere along Faulkner Road and he marched into the club in search of a cocktail and a German guy called DJ Mickey Friedman. Years earlier at some club not in Atlanta, Luke saw this Israeli-reared DJ spinning records on a turntable and said: “My God! That Mickey Friedman is HOT and I want to touch him inappropriately in all the right places.”

At the bar, Luke ordered several tall glasses of Scotch with ice he then downed in less than sixty seconds. Loaded and lit, Luke marched across the dance floor and stumbled upon the DJ booth.

“Hey Mickey,” Luke slurred like a drunkard.

“Do you remember me? We met at that club way back when that time in I don’t remember what it was called.”

DJ Mickey Friedman wore thick headphones; he did not hear Luke at all but Luke, in his inebriated libation, felt the Berlin-based DJ was intentionally ignoring him.

Jerusalemite and said, “I’m just not that into you, either.”

Luke was a big fan of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” on Logo, especially the second season of the show and, on Sunday, he went to Burkhart’s to see that new show “EXTRAVAGANZA” starring Tyra Sanchez. As noted before, our hapless hero is a big fan of the food served at Burkhart’s and he ordered two sample platters, a cheeseburger, fried shrimp, cheesecake and three vodka-Red Bulls. Later Luke was gassy but, nevertheless he enjoyed the visual sight that was Tyra Sanchez, a true beauty of drag performance and a celebrated artist. Tyra Sanchez was stately and statuesque, her eyes were seductive and her breasts perky. It was deceiving for Luke to comprehend that this ravishing goddess of the night was, in fact, a man.

During her act, however, a happy little gay twink with blonde hair and tight jeans popped up next to Luke and smiled, “Hi there. My name is ‘Peppy Kitten’ and I think you’re cute. Plus,” he raised his eyebrows twice and winked, “I like older guys like you. Do you have a cigarette?”

“What?” Luke winced, “Are you on crack?

I’m not old. What the hell is wrong with you?”

This little twink giggled like a spark plug, “I just love Tyra Sanchez. So,” he asked Luke, “do you live near here?”

Luke downed a shot of Absolut mixed with Tanqueray, “What’s it to you?”

“In case I get too drunk.” The twink giggled again, “I thought maybe you might want to, you know, fuck me later tonight after the show.”

Luke almost spit out his drink in shock and surprise. He said, “Dude,” and shook his head. “I’m just not that into you.”

And then on Monday Luke wandered over to Blake’s on the Park for yet another drag show. Luke wanted to kick off his week with one of Atlanta’s most infamous drag shows. This show featured several drag queens: Lady Shabazz, Shawnna Brooks, Nikki Simone and Phoenix, among others, (so many beautiful drag queens in Atlanta!) and, while the show plowed on into the night, Luke went to the bar to order and then drink three shots of Jagermeister followed by Goldschlager chasers. He felt a tap on his shoulder and he turned around on his heel.

Luke gasped, he said, “Greg? What on earth are you doing here?”

“Your drunk, Luke.” Greg was Luke’s best friend, he lived in Grant Park and said, “Let me take you home and put you to bed. I heard you’ve been out drinking all weekend.”

“Dude,” Luke said, “How many times do I have to tell you, Greg? I’m just not that into you.”

“Well,” Greg dragged Luke out the back into the parking, “we’ll just see about that.”

Does Manhunt take credit for changing the way gay men date in America?

The internet changed the way gay men date in America.

Manhunt was a part of that. Now the internet is migrating to applications on the mobile phone platform. Manhunt is keeping up with the times.

What does Manhunt mobile offer that the other mobile apps do not?

Manhunt offers its number one strength: detailed profiles of more than four million local guys with over 60,000 online at any given moment. Our profiles include multiple pictures, likes and dislikes, lists of guys who’ve checked you out, and location and availability, to mention a few.

The original Manhunt wasn’t very flashy. It was pretty low-tech and yet hugely successful.

We’ve made Manhunt better with more features as time has gone by.

Do gay men need the bells and whistles in their hook-up sites and apps?

Our members want new features. There are other sites out there that offer less, and guys use those, too. If you want a bare-bones service, Craigslist works for some.

Why has no other website been able to beat Manhunt?

Our goal has been to offer the most to our members. My business partner, Larry Basile, likes to call our site the Sears Catalog for gay men. Everything you want should be there.

how of hands -- how many people knew Manhunt started on the phone?

In 1987, Larry Basile created Dial Information Services Corporation, a telephone chat line for gay men in the Boston area. Back then, customers paid ten cents a minute to chat on party lines with local guys. Fees were applied to their phone bills.

One of the chat line’s best customers was Jonathan Crutchley who eventually joined Basile as a partner in the business. Then in 2001, the pair launched their chat line nationally on the web.

Manhunt was born, growing into a phenomenon that would forever change the way gay men met other gay men.

Ten years later, Basile and Crutchley are making their grand return to phones with Manhunt apps for Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android. Manhunt is the first gay site to offer apps for both platforms, allowing users mobile access to more than four million Manhunters around the world.

It’s funny how history repeats itself. But only history will tell if Manhunt can remain on top of the gay hook-up and compete against the already established and formidable leaders of mobile, Grindr and DList. Has the final shot been blown in the hunt? We spoke with Manhunt co-founder Jonathan Crutchley.

Why has Manhunt been so slow to the mobile market?

Jonathan Crutchley: Slow? Better to get it right than rush out a bad product. Manhunt’s technical team has been busy developing at least six mobile products during the past year.

The first releases last spring were for Dlist.com, our social networking site for younger gay guys. The final release was for Manhunt iPhone, which require integration of our online data base of millions of guys’ profiles, more than twelve million pictures, and the editing of content to meet Apple’s standards.

That could not be done at internet speed.

Part of the original success of Manhunt was that it was first on the market. Do you fear the delay in launching the app may cost Manhunt?

Manhunt was not first on the market. We started in 2001, several years after Gay.com and a few others you won’t remember. We built a better product that guys found easier to use, and it surpassed the competition. Who uses Gay.com now?

Until recently, Adam4Adam was your biggest competitor.

They are a free site, yet they still haven’t managed to topple the big guy.

Our market research shows that guys who are active users of Manhunt also have accounts with maybe four or five of our competitors as well, whether those sites charge subscriptions or not. Adam4Adam is mostly supported by advertising. When they launch an app on the mobile phone, there will be a lot less space for ads. They may be between a rock and a hard place.

When did you first learn about Grindr?

I was riding in a taxi to an event in San Francisco in 2009 with another Manhunt employee when he took out his iPhone and showed me the new Grindr app. As we drove through the city the phone showed one guy two blocks this way and someone else three blocks that way. It was a clever gimmick based on location, but who knew if these guys were what you were looking for?

Did you know right away that it would be a viable competitor?

No, I didn’t, and we still don’t know. My first question about Grindr was “How does this make money?” From what I hear their revenue from $2.99 download fees and ad clicks barely covers expenses. If they were not profitable during the first year when they had no competition, how will they do when everyone else has an iPhone app going up against them?

Why do you think gay men have taken such an interest in mobile dating?

Gay men are the first to try new things, and for some time now gay men have been leading their lives around mobile phone usage. It had to happen.

What’s Grindr’s biggest weakness and how will Manhunt use it to its advantage?

Grindr shows you a picture and a location. Other than that, not much else. Manhunt, Gay.com and other major hookup sites have large data bases than can be searched for exactly the guy you’d like to meet, not just someone around the corner.

Is it true the Manhunt app is sexier on the Android?

I don’t think it is. Any way you access Manhunt is sexy!

What do you hope to be remembered for?

Hopefully I have started a business that will last 100 years, even if I don’t last that long myself. It’s an interesting question and makes me think back to when Johnny Carson was asked what would be on his epitaph. He said “I’ll be right back.” I’d like to borrow that line if I may. “I’ll be right back.”
