The Brent Star Report Oh Lawd,

RUBY REDD is back!

A

ccording to the GPS on my phone, this must be Ruby Redd’s house. It’s huge… even though it’s all boarded up with the exception of one room on the top floor.

The outdoor pool doesn’t have a drop of water in it, instead it’s filled with trash and graffiti paint sprayed on it’s walls spelling out Redd Jew! Yep, I’m at the right house. Right as I began to ‘knock’ (because the doorbell was broken), I heard an argument, then glass breaking followed by a black midget wearing a tutu running out the house. Um…this is going to be interesting. After convincing myself to walk up the squeaky set of stairs decorated with empty beer bottles, I went into the only room with sunlight and with the sound of someone talking. It was Ruby Redd practicing for her new weekly BINGO show that’s held every Wednesday night at Midtown’s Mellow Mushroom.

Me: It’s Ruby Redd!!!

I heard you were making a comeback!

Ruby: It’s NOT a comeback, it’s a RETURN!!!

Brent: Um. Sure. Weren’t you BIG in the drag scene?

Ruby: I AM Big…it’s the SCENE that got small!

Actually my cheap opening you’re reading is borrowed from one of my favorite films, Sunset Boulevard…oh and let me explain the reads. Ruby Red is one of the rare comedians who gets away with telling racial jokes (thus explains the pool writing and black midget), she has been doing drag in the ATL for 12 years. Child, the real story is I had the munchies and wanted something to eat and just happened to stumbled into Mellow Mushrooms. There she was on that stage wearing this huge blue ‘Happy Hanukkah” dress, over the top silver glittery pumps and of course, her signature bigger than life red wig. When I walked in, the Don Rickles of the drag scene started, “Oh look everybody, now we have FOUR black people in the house” as the happy go lucky mixed crowd filled the room with laughter. You may remember her as head manger of Blakes where she also ran her popular BRAIN FREEZE show for four years...not to mention her face enlarged to 100 million megabytes on the back of a bus that was used to transport customers from Blakes to Wetbar. One thing is for sure, she made a name for herself in this city. Tonight, it’s blatantly obvious that’s she’s on fire

and happy to be back! I decided to chat after the show.

Brent: So what you brought you back?

Ruby: I missed it all. I missed being silly and entertaining the customers. Plus I’m using this opportunity for Chris Kids which is like the only organization to bring me out of retirement.

Brent: Oh really now?

Ruby; Yes, tonight is THE first night and already we raised a $100. So I’m hoping to match that or higher each week.

Brent: So what was your last gig before this one and WHAT were you doing during your hiatus?

Ruby: Cypress. Just kidding. I’ve been doing other charity events here and there like for the local charity softball team, the Atlanta Bucks, to name a few. My last gig was at Amsterdam.

Brent: I noticed you have a sidekick this time around. She’s like the cheese to your Whopper.

Ruby: lol! Exactly! But her name is Ms. Vicious, from the Flaming Sugar Baker Sisters..

Brent: Well you two were very entertaining together and congrats on your show!

Ruby: Thanks girl and please tell your readers the show starts 8pm every Wednesday.

Ok I will. Folks, it was a fun bingo, but now I’m in the mood to watch the rest of Sunset Boulevard to see Norma Desmond say another famous quote, “Alright Mr. Demille, I’m ready for my close up”. One thing I notice about the human spirit, when it’s something inside you that you love to do or have a passion for, I don’t care how long of a hiatus you take, trust and believe it simply can’t STAY inside you. You are who you were created to be!

“B is for

Bully”

Once upon a time Luke went to a palm reader in Gwinnett County.

The palm reader told him, “You must move to Atlanta, Luke, for you will find love there.”

The palm reader told him, “You must move to Atlanta, Luke, for you will find love there.”

On a rainy night in Georgia, Luke signed on to Facebook to look for friends he had lost touch with over the years. Luke clicked here and clicked there and, lo and behold, he found the profile for his junior high school bully. Luke had long ago suppressed the memory of this school bully but, on this rainy night, Luke located Betty Bixley, the girl that had bullied Luke during the seventh and eighth grades. Back in the day she had been tall, thin and blond but now, a mere decade later, she appeared fat, barefoot and pregnant and, judging by the background in her Facebook photo, she now lived in a swampy trailer park on the outskirts of Ocala, Florida.

On Monday, Luke sent Betty Bixley a very simple message: “Hey Betty! Do you remember me?”

On Tuesday, Betty Bixley replied, she wrote: “Of course! How are you?”

Luke thought long and hard about how to answer that question. Luke knew he could insult her; she had terrorized him for years and all he really wanted was to slap that skinny blond bitch upside the head, but Luke moved away and wound up in a different high school.

Now, through the advent of Facebook, he had the chance to comment on her obesity, to poke fun at her poverty; he felt he wielded the blunt tool of retaliation and he wanted to rub his relative success in her face. Luke wanted to get back at Betty Bixley and he obsessed about what he should write to his former junior high 60 davidatlanta

school bully.

On Wednesday, Luke wrote the following message:

“Hey Betty!

“It is quite possible that I have thought about you nearly every day since the last time I saw you years ago and I can tell you why, as I think my timing is oh-so-appropriate given recent news in America.

“For the better part of junior high school, you gave me a lot of shit for being gay. At the time I was still pretty far back in the closet and boy-oh-boy you giving me shit really upset me and, evidently, upset me for very many years. At one point during my eighth grade school year I got so depressed because you and a whole lot of other people just kept making fun of me and calling me names and picking on me. I was depressed and suicidal for most of that year and, in the many years since then, just to put it in to context, I have never been as upset or as depressed about anything since that school year.

“I remember you unlike I have remembered anyone else. I remember you sitting in the cafeteria eating one of those nasty pizzas, and they were pretty rancid as I recollect, and, in front of all those people, you said: ‘You’re obviously a faggot. Why don’t you just admit it already?’

“OK,” Luke wrote, “so maybe I was an annoying person, but in hindsight, at the very best those words were unkind and they’ve haunted me for years since then. My inability to come out of the closet in the years after that was really due to people like you who, I’m just guessing, thought it was ‘cute’ or ‘smart’ or ‘cheeky’ or ‘fun’ to say things like that to me at all, especially in front of all those people.

“I hope, in all sincerity, that we’re all older and wiser, but when I saw you on Facebook, and in light of the recent suicides, I felt I should say something. I also hope that if you are someone who disagrees with people because of their sexuality, and might even condemn them, I really hope I was the weakest person you ever humiliated, someone not as strong as me might’ve gone and shot himself or jumped off a bridge.

“We’re coming up to the holiday season soon, and that’s a time when we reflect on life. It’s a time of year when we seek forgiveness and seek to forgive so, in that vein, I forgive you for your comments back during junior high school. Now that we ‘encounter’ each other again, albeit electronically, I say this to you even though a huge part of me does not want to forgive you, but I do it anyway.

“Consider your comments forgiven and your slate with me wiped clean.

“I hope all is with you where ever you are.”

Luke signed his name and clicked to send this message to his former school bully.

On Thursday, Betty Bixley replied to Luke’s message, she wrote: “Luke, I am so sorry for everything that I did or the harassment I encouraged. All I can say is that I was fourteen or fifteen at the time. In no way am I excusing my actions at that time, but I am so sorry for any and every hardship that I have added to you and your life. We were living in such a closed environment and, at that time in my life, I was very much a follower but today I am not that person. I do thank you that you are willing to possibly see me for me and not what I was as a stupid teenager. I am a single mom of two kids. I have a ten year old and a one year old. My one year old was in ICU for nine months and he just recently came home and…”

Luke lost interest in the tales of trouble and woe in the life of Betty Bixley. However, she did end her message with this: “Luke, I am so sorry. I wish I could say I remember all the things I said to you and apologize.

I am so sorry. If you could call me, I would love to talk to you and tell you personally how sorry I am and how negatively I represented myself. I am truly sorry and I can’t tell you that enough.” Betty then gave Luke her cell phone number down in Florida.

“She wants me to call her?” Luke scoffed, he said, “I’m not going to call her. Not unless Oprah is involved and I can fly up to Chicago.”
