Welcome to the first edition of the Back Yard Bar magazine and thankyou for taking the time to have a look at our compilation.

As you might expect the Backyard Bar was borne from an interest in Home bars and the variation that makes everybody’s totally unique and a representation of the owners personality.

Socially we know that the prices drinking out all of the time have risen extraordinarily and people’s inspiration to do ‘something different’ has been driven by programmes like ‘Small spaces and Grand Designs’, 12 years of competitions sponsored by Cuprinol have seen more and more individual outbuildings be created and enjoyed. www.etchers.co.uk have spent the last year making bespoke products for people and have specifically looked directly at the spirit market with their laser etched decanter and glass sets and now looking at personalised products for the Backyard Bar. With an average of almost one new gin being created per month, spirits like rum and gin have never been more trendy - more and more people are interested and keen to share their own passions with their friends and family.

The Backyard Bar magazine over the coming year will try to introduce new products. celebrate others designs and show a little more inspiration - we hope to have sponsors provide prizes for competitions and importantly get feedback from you the users to share your ideas to develop the magazine.

So what’s the difference between beer and craft beer?

Usually craft breweries are usually defined as small, traditional, independent breweries, but I thought a better way to define craft beer is to examine the differences between beer and craft beer. …

Beer is made by large corporations named Anheuser-Busch, InBev and South African Breweries (SAB). Craft beer is brewed by people, like Sam Calagione, Linus Hall, Douglas Booth and Daniel Kahn, craftsmen who now run successful breweries because they loved beer and wanted to share it with others.

Beer tastes like….well, beer. Craft beer tastes, at various times, like chocolate, coffee, oak, caramel, molasses, grass, floral hops, dark fruit, smoke, grapefruit, oranges, lemon, coriander, pumpkin, hazelnut, and any number of other ingredients.

Beer is usually served ice cold from the can or bottle (to numb the tastebuds and make it palatable) and in massive quantities, in the hopes of getting drunk. Craft beer is lovingly poured into a special glass, at just the right temperature, and given the chance to warm and release its flavors as the color and thickness of the head, the color and clarity and the nose of the beer are all examined, analyzed and appreciated, before the beer itself is savored on the palate and the various flavors are allowed to arise and intermingle.

Beer is marketed, on television and in print, by making you think you’ll be cool or get the girl with their product. Craft beer is marketed, mostly not on television, on its merits as a beer, with emphasis on flavor and the ingredients that went into making the product.

Beer is usually yellow or brown. Craft beer can be anything from a hazy golden straw color to a coppery orange to a ruby brown to an inky black and everything in between.

Beer is made with cheap ingredients and adjuncts such as rice, to make the beer more bland and inexpensive, with the end result being a beer that makes you feel bloated and full. Craft beer is brewed using hand selected ingredients, specifically picked with certain flavor characteristics in mind and brewed with the end goal of flavorful, quality beer. It is more expensive but a much better value for the money.

Beer is sometimes “shotgunned” or used for a keg stand.

Craft beer is sometimes selected and served as an integral accompaniment to a fine meal.

Beer is designed to take the consumer’s money.

Craft beer is designed to make the consumer happy.

BEER lovers celebrated the launch of a beer in homage to Portsmouth soldiers who served in the First World War. Brewers came together at Fratton Park yesterday to promote Pompey Pals’ ale, created in tribute to the Pompey Pals battalions ahead of the centenary of the conflict.

The English pale ale, produced by Cerne Abbas Brewery in partnership with Pompey and the Pompey Pals’ project. For each bottle sold, 50p will be donated to the Pompey Pals’ charity Chris Pennycook, who helped the brewery produce the beer, said: ‘It’s been brilliant taking part in this. The project is all about remembering those from Portsmouth who served in the Great War.’

In 2016 after over 130 years brewing returned to Cerne Abbas.

The brewery is now nestled into the Cerne Valley, our barley is grown by Dorset’s longest standing organic farmer Will Best at his Manor Farm in Godmanstone. Once spent, the barley returns to Manor Farm and Pound Farm in Nether Cerne to feed the dairy herds minimising waste and food miles. We use exceptional ingredients to recreate the beer Cerne Abbas was once so famous for and exported to New York and London. The green sand geology of the area makes the water supremely ideal for beer making.

The brewing history of Cerne Abbas, along with its notorious chalk giant provides the brewery with a strong pedigree and instantly identifiable product. Seasonal beers which celebrate past brewers, village characters and the exceptional local landscape are building the brewery’s reputation in Dorset and beyond. It is these elements which combine with local accommodation, tea houses and pubs promote and bolster rural tourism and employment in the Cerne Valley.

Like fashion, gin is fickle. In just 10 years, the spirit has been transformed from one made by a handful of large distillers to a category now represented by producers of all shapes and sizes. In key markets such as the UK, gin remains buoyant. According to the latest figures published by the Wine and Spirit Trade Association, sales of gin in the UK rose by 28% in volume and by 33% in value to reach £1.5 billion in the year ending 31 March 2018. This means that gin sales have more than doubled in value in five years (from £696m in the year ending March 2013). While the volume of gin sold has increased, this does not necessarily mean that the products themselves are completely new.

Take the recent craze for coloured and savoury gins. Founded in 1740 and latterly owned by Diageo until production ceased in 2017, Booth’s gin was famously pale yellow in colour. Pre-Prohibition America was also responsible for a series of weird and wacky ‘medicinal gins’, including Buchu Gin (a herb used in perfume and medicine) made by the likes of The Bouvier Speciality Company and Friedenwald, or asparagus gin, by the Rothenburg Company and the Folsom Company.

Many modern gin producers take inspiration from what has been done before. Tanqueray, founded in 1732, used recipes from founder Charles Tanqueray from the 1830s and the 1860s respectively to influence its new Flor de Sevilla orange and limited-edition lovage gins. For its pink gin, Beefeater’s master distiller, Desmond Payne MBE, trawled through the inventions of the distillery’s pharmacist founder James Borrough, which included raspberry gin and cherry brandy, while Whitley Neill and J.J. Whitley both benefit from the records kept by the Whitley family distillers.

Over the past eight to 10 months, the gin category has seen high-profile big-brand launches, kicking off with Gordon’s Pink in September 2017. This was followed by Beefeater Pink in February 2018, Tanqueray’s Flor de Sevilla in April and its Lovage gin in May, basil-flavoured O’ndina gin from Campari in April and a sour cherry gin from Italian liqueur giant Luxardo, which is due to be released in the UK this summer.

With increasing numbers of established brands in the pink, coloured and savoury categories, including Pinkster, Edgerton and Warner Edwards, along with Boudier’s vermillion-hued Saffron Gin and Spain’s olive-and-rosemary infused Gin Mare, what has prompted the big players to follow suit?

Nick Williamson, marketing director of Campari UK, points to the growth of the cocktail market and the growing appreciation for bitter, savoury serves, such as the Negroni. “The broader rise of savoury gins should be looked at within the context of the general consumer appetite for more bitter drinks, so it makes good business sense for gin distillers to capitalise on this trend. That savoury gins are enjoying a surge in popularity is certainly in part thanks to the increasing need for new gins entering the marketplace to stand out from the crowd, with a distinct USP,” he says.

Last year Pernod Ricard, the owner of Beefeater Gin, launched the Gin Hub, an independent arm tasked with developing and innovating within the company’s portfolio of strategic gin brands to drive further growth in the category. Eric Sampers, global brand director of the Gin Hub, believes that to attract newcomers to gin, brands must abide by three rules that now influence product development at Beefeater and have helped shape its new pink gin. These factors are essential in attracting what the company refers to as the ‘new generation of younger gin drinkers’, an area where previously, Sampers admits, “we weren’t performing as well as we would have liked”.

‘Since the Cuprinol Shed of the Year competition started 12 years ago we’ve seen some amazing and inventive uses of sheds from all over the UK,’ says Andrew Wilcox, founder of Cuprinol’s Shed of the Year competition.

‘We’ve always had a lot of hobbyists and workshops shed entries, but in the last few years there has been so many more start-ups and small businesses using their sheds to make a little extra money or start a new career.’
