HINGE FALL 2022 Located in Frank Tejeda Park, this project aims at increasing neighborhood resilience by proposing a center that helps bring the community together. An aquaponics center is designed as a central heart for the complex surrounded by a distribution center, public learning center, outdoor art gallery, and 1 acre field where the community can grow food locally. The project brings the community together, acting as a hinge, by creating several connections that coincide with the site, all leading to the heart of the complex. The form of the project is a result of the 3 different connections on the site and is adjusted to create 3 different outdoor gathering areas, all tied together by a shading device that covers the entire project.

EVOLUTION INFILL SPRING 2022 Located just outside “The Pearl” in north central downtown San Antonio, this 2 part project consists of a 4 condo multi-use development and an urban infill development adjacent to a previously existing West Elm building. For the infill development, the West Elm building is repurposed into a museum that recounts the story of “The Pearl” and how it changed from the old brewery it used to be into the hotel it is now. The adjacent space is utilized as an extension to the museum and showcases future plans for the area. The museum begins on the first floor with a very orthogonal exhibitional setup similar to the common grids used for city planning. The setup evolves, however, into a more distorted, fluid arrangement on the second floor to show changes in history and the passage of time. As users enter the museum extension, the building shape physically changes and is wrapped in a perforateed screen serving as a final building packaging inspired by the pearl brewery logo and their famous 3 X’s, a symbol of high beer quality.

EVOLUTION CONDOS SPRING 2022 Located just outside “The Pearl” in north central downtown San Antonio, this 2 part project consists of an urban infill development and a 4 condo multi-use development. The 4 condo unit consists of 3 floors arranged from most public to most private. The 1st floor is made up of community amenities and public spaces. The 2nd floor is where each condo begins and is where the living room and dining area can be found. Finally, the 3rd floor consists of the master and guest bedrooms. The floors of this complex rotate 30 degrees each to physically show the change in privacy experienced by users as they ascend through the building. Changes in roof height also occur starting at 14 feet on the first floor and ending in 10 feet at the 3rd floor to further show the evolution of privacy throughout the condo unit.

VEIL SPRING 2022 CONTRIBUTERS: OSCAR CRUZ Located in downtown San Antonio, next to the riverwalk, this project aims at increasing student housing for university students providing them with a comfortable way of living close to the colleges they attend. The main focus of this project was to have the building react to its surroundings and tying it into the neighboring buildings to its sides. The building consists of 22 stories filled with housing along with recreational areas, dining spaces, gyms, etc. designed with intention for its student users. The project is fitted into a large elevation change from river level to street level and is adjusted with a grand central staircase allowing for a smooth transition between the 2. Outdoor space is made accessable to everyone in the building and is made plentyful with massive balconies overlooking the San Antonio riverwalk. Finally, to bring the whole building together, a massive shading device that acts as a veil wrapping around the entire glass facade is emplaced opening up for views of the water below and city skyline above.

CONVERGENCE FALL 2023 CONTRIBUTERS: OSCAR CRUZ | JAZMINE ESPINOZA Located in the southern part of San Antonio, adjacent to the existing Confluence Park, this project aims at challenging the future of a suburban lifestyle and how we can design for a better tommorrow. For this design a 15 minute city approach was taken and applied to the 80 acre site given. The site includes a green strip with landmarks, a commercial strip, and 2 housing types. To make everything reachable within 15 minutes bicycles were introduced having a designated bicycle lane on every street on site. To increase healthy living conditions and create a sense of community the previously existing horizontally crossing main street was closed off and Confluence Park was extended across the whole site. A massive landbridge was added to make this happen, connecting the 2 sides of the site into one cohesive community. Bicyclists as well as pedestrians were integrated into the park extension by designing paths with ramps to create safe spaces whenever paths would converge, creating a safe and enjoyable suburban community.
