Welcome... Hello readers, And welcome to the Autumn / Winter edition of the town’s very own magazine. The nights are drawing in as I write, so please stay seen and stay safe during these dark evenings. Wear something bright if you venture out and carry a flashlight if possible. You can download a flashlight for your smartphone. For more tips on staying safe, see Becki’s corner on page 41. In this edition we celebrate a fabulous achievement from the Slimming World group, with one very impressive goal achieved by Enid Findon - see page 23 for the full story.

Never too old to learn, laugh and live S

KEGNESS U3A is up and running again. We provide social, recreational and educational activities for retired or semiretired people.

We meet at the Storehouse on North Parade on the third Wednesday of the month at 10 o’clock. The next meeting will be a members’ coffee morning on 20th October. On 17th November, New Voices presenter on Radio Lincolnshire, Karl Bird, will talk to us on Why the World needs Lincolnshire. We are part of a worldwide organisation, with each local U3A run independently. U3A means University of the Third Age, where every member has something to offer and every member has something to learn. Group activities are an important part of the U3A. We have all had interesting experiences and pastimes we can share with others. The groups meet regularly according to what suits the members. Our current activities include Book

Lovers, Card Craft, Curling, French, German, Knitting & Crochet, Local History, Walks and a Social Group. We also have a strong group which caters specifically for single members. All of these groups are now functioning. We had a number of other groups before Covid, but these need new volunteers to run them. This is also an exciting opportunity to

include new groups and interests. In the past we have had Musical Appreciation, Singing for Fun, Creative Writing, Discussion, Computer, Photography, Italian, Spanish and Theatre visits. We even had a Ukulele group for a while. Any group subject is possible when there are people willing to contribute and participate, including, for example, birdwatching and 10-pin bowling, though mountaineering might prove difficult in Skegness!

There is no lower (or upper!) age limit. If you have a skill or hobby you would like to share with others we would be pleased if you would come and join us. Equally, you would be welcome to come along to our monthly get-together or come to one of our groups, where you will make many new friends and enjoy new experiences. Further information can be found on the Skegness U3A website. Alternatively, you can contact our membership secretary on 01754 611542.

Volunteers needed in Skegness and Mablethorpe

to help visually impaired people get out now lockdown has eased

S

IGHT loss charity Guide Dogs has launched an appeal for volunteers in Skegness and Mablethorpe who could help local people with sight loss get back out into the community, now lockdown restrictions have eased.

The charity’s volunteer ‘sighted guides’ help people with a vision impairment by guiding them around their local area, for a couple of hours a week or a fortnight. Partnerships are matched based on common interests and the service helps people with sight loss build their confidence and do the things they enjoy. Elizabeth Felgate, My Sighted Guide Volunteering Manager for Skegness and Mablethorpe, said: “The pandemic has led to many people with sight loss feeling isolated and losing their confidence. “This has been made worse by many social distancing measures only being marked by visual cues. “We have an increasing number of people in Skegness and Mablethorpe waiting for support from a volunteer sighted guide, who are keen to build their confidence again and get back out now that lockdown has eased. “Volunteers can give as much or

as little time as they like - just a few hours a week can make all the difference to someone. “If you think you could help someone living with sight loss in your area, we’d urge you to get in touch.” Volunteers must be 18 or over and an Enhanced Disclosure check is required as part of the role.

Full sighted guide training will be provided for new volunteers by Guide Dogs.

To find out more, contact Elizabeth Felgate via Elizabeth. Felgate@guidedogs.org.uk, call 0800 781 1444 or visit: www.guidedogs.org.uk/ volunteering

About Guide Dogs Guide Dogs is here to help the two million people living with sight loss live the life they choose. Children and adults. Friends and family. Our expert staff, volunteers and life-changing dogs are here to help people affected by sight loss live actively, independently and well. Founded in 1934, following our first partnership in 1931, we are a charity that is almost entirely dependent on donations. Find out more at: guidedogs.org.uk

T

IDYING the garden in autumn keeps it looking neat in winter and means that you’ll get a head start next spring. Here are the areas to tackle. As well as clearing fallen leaves, there are lots of other simple tasks that will make a big difference to the look of your garden.

Tidy your borders Remove dying leaves and collapsed stems from herbaceous perennials, either pulling by hand or cutting at the base with secateurs. Leave any stems that have attractive seedheads for birds to enjoy. Remove weeds, then spread compost or well rotted manure over the soil to insulate plant roots - the worms will work it in over winter.

Collect autumn leaves OK, so your shed is treated, painted and in outstanding health and now it’s time for that big clear out. Over time we all tend to hoard and store things that we don’t actually need or want and the shed is a popular place to do that. Take some time to go through what’s in your shed and don’t be afraid to chuck out what you really don’t need! After having a good sort out, place

Tidying the garden in autumn everything outside the shed and then give the inside of the shed a thorough clean and sweep.

Collect autumn leaves A few piles of leaves in out-of-the-way places - under hedges, for example can provide shelter for overwintering wildlife. But remove leaves from your lawn, paths (which can be slippery) and borders. Use them to make leaf mould, a great soil improver. Autumn leaves fall in huge quantities during October and November, quickly covering lawns and borders. Left in place they can smother grass and fill the crowns of herbaceous perennials, sometimes killing them.

Clear away old crops Clear spent plants on the veg plot before they start to rot and become host to pests and diseases. Compost

Clearing away old crops

Collecting autumn leaves

everything unless it’s diseased. Chop beans and peas off at ground level, leaving their nitrogen-fixing roots in the soil to feed next year’s crops. You could also sow a green manure, a great soil improver.

Leave your lawn looking trim Nothing sets off borders better that a neatly cut and edged lawn, so mow for the final time. Set your mower blades higher than usual to leave the grass slightly longer over winter, then cut the edges with an edging tool or knife to redefine their pristine lines.

Make repairs Repair damage to raised beds, sheds and compost bins, and paint them with wood preservative. Replace any rotting fence posts, so they don’t get blown down in winter storms. Ensure shed roofs don’t leak, and replace any broken panes or faulty vents in greenhouses.

Sort out your pond Scoop out leaves that have blown into your pond, before they sink down and start to rot. Also cut back the foliage of marginal plants that have died down. Remove pond pumps and fountains that are no longer in use. Wash them out thoroughly, then store over winter.

Enid is a gem Woman celebrates sustaining 3 stone weight loss for 5 years!

A

to try increasing her activity levels. Enid began slowly by walking around her local area until being active was part of her routine. Now she regularly enjoys going for long walks everyday with her dog, which she believes has been important in helping her to maintain her weight loss.

super slimmer from Sutton-on-Sea shares her experience of Slimming World after setting a dazzling example of long-term weight loss.

Enid Findon joined the Sutton-n-Sea Slimming World group in February 2016 and lost 2 stone 2.5lbs in just 15 weeks. She then went on to lower her target weigh and achieved this in just 5 weeks. Even more impressively, she’s kept the weight off ever since proving she’s made lifelong changes to her eating and activity habits.

Slimming World members who achieve their target weight, which they set themselves, can continue to attend their local group every week for free as long as they stay within 3lbs either side of their target weight. Enid says: “I’ve made so many friends that I can’t imagine not going to the group each week - they have supported me with their knowledge and suggestions. Everyone inspired and supported me to achieve my target and now it’s my turn to do the same for other people, to show the same kindness, warmth and compassion that I was shown. Even when my group went virtual, the support from my Consultant Charlotte never wavered, so neither did I - and seeing those same friendly faces each week has really helped keep me focused on my goal, especially if I had a tough week.”

Enid decided to join Slimming World when her health took a turn for the worse. She wanted to get back to a healthy BMI range, knowing that this would help to improve her health. Enid has managed to lower her blood pressure and significantly reduce her medication. She says: “Like most people, I’d tried to lose weight countless times, yet nothing ever really seemed to stick. Slimming World was completely different because it was just so simple. I could still enjoy hearty, home-cooked meals with my family while losing weight, which seemed like a miracle at the time! Previous weight-loss attempts left me feeling hungry - nowadays I eat more than ever! Slimming World isn’t a diet, it’s a way of life. “With Slimming World, the support that I needed was there right from day one, both from my Consultant Charlotte Riley and the other members in the group. I picked up new ideas and recipes every week - I still do now, in fact - and I started to really believe that I could do it. And I did, because 5 years later I’m still at my target weight. I’ve even managed to hold on the changes I’ve made during lockdown, which has definitely been easier thanks to the ongoing support of Charlotte and Slimming World via our virtual group - it’s been so nice to continue to see friendly faces and get help and advice even though we couldn’t be together in person.” Back in February 2016, Enid began following Slimming World’s Food

Optimising eating plan, which encourages slimmers to fill up on healthy, satisfying foods like fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish so they lose weight without going hungry or feeling deprived. Enid says: “I’m really adventurous in the kitchen now and I’ve passed lots of healthy habits on to my family and friends too. And I’ve continued to pick up delicious recipes each week through my virtual group - it’s been especially helpful for food swaps when I couldn’t get certain ingredients at the start of lockdown, and I’ve loved swapping recipe ideas and trying out new dishes I wouldn’t typically make.” As the weight came off, she decided

Charlotte, who runs the Sutton-on-Sea which Enid attends, says: “At Slimming World we believe that losing weight and maintaining for the long term is the most underrecognised achievement in weight management - I’m so proud of Enid, she has proven just what incredible things you can achieve when you make that commitment to improve your health and truly believe in yourself. Even in the most recent months, when at times many of us have struggled to stay motivated, Enid has been amazing at keeping everyone’s spirits up. She is a real inspiration, not only to me but all the other members in the group, and it’s always great for new members to meet her and see just what’s possible at Slimming World.” To find out more about the Slimming World groups along the East Coast, which are held Monday - Friday at various times, call Jemma on 07947117601 or visit

Health

Five ways to avoid catching a cold HE temperature is dropping and the days are getting shorter. As we head into winter we’re all at a greater risk of catching colds or the flu, but there’s lots you can do to boost your immune system to help avoid the misery.

1. Know what to eat and drink We’ve all been told about increasing our vitamin C intake to boost our immune system, but the truth is there’s more to it than just nibbling on an orange or two. Your immune system relies on vitamins A, C and E to rebuild and repair it. Eating a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables should give you a good balance. Water also plays a very important part in immune function, particularly in flushing out toxins. You can find out more about how food can help support a healthy immune system here.

2. Vary your workouts Exercise is vital in boosting your immune system because it stimulates the production of white blood cells,

the cells that attack bacteria; and it also improves the circulation of your immune cells. However, it is important to vary your routine. Exercising at a high intensity every time can lead to elevated cortisol and adrenaline levels which is a sign that you are under too much stress. This can then lead to a weakened immune system and poor recovery. Try to vary your workout routines with a mixture of high and moderate intensity exercise. You could focus on cardio one day, resistance another and flexibility the next. Here's a great 7-day workout routine for good overall fitness and health.

3. Give yourself a break Equally as important as getting enough exercise is having a break from it. Give yourself at least two days a week rest from strenuous exercise to allow recovery and help avoid the effects of stress on your immune system. You should also avoid high intensity exercise when you’re ill and stop exercise entirely if you have a fever, fatigue or other acute symptoms. Sleep also plays an important part in avoiding illness and repairing

your body during illness. Sleep is an essential tool in recovering from the day’s wear and tear. You should aim for seven hours of sleep a night, and more if you have an infection.

4. Put the cigarette down It’s no surprise that cigarettes and their smoky relatives are bad for you, but it’s less well known that when it comes to catching colds, they are a major contributor. Smoking increases the production of a number of stress hormones that suppress immune function. It also increases the body’s exposure to harmful ‘free radicals’ that counter our antioxidant defences, thus increasing the likelihood of illness. Speak to your GP about the best ways for you to quit smoking.

5. Stay clean Lastly, the best way to avoid getting sick is to avoid the germs that cause sickness. Make sure you wash your hands regularly, especially after travelling on public transport, after going to the bathroom and before eating food. This will not only help you avoid illness, but it will help prevent the spread of illness for everyone else too.

How intelligent is your cat? O

UR cats seem extremely intelligent, they always seem to know exactly what we’re up to and when their dinner time should be, but how intelligent are they really?

Cats seem to be able to anticipate our every move and know what we’re thinking, but we never feel like we know what’s going on in their brains. So, the question still remains: how intelligent are cats? In this article we take a look at the current research surrounding cat intelligence as well as the age-old debate of if cats are smarter than dogs.

How intelligent are cats? It turns out that cats have a brain structure that’s similar to other intelligent animals, including humans. It may come as a surprise to learn that your little cat’s brain structure is about 90 percent similar to yours! A cat’s cerebral cortex - where rational decision making and complex problem solving takes place - has around 300 million neurons. The cerebral cortex is involved in the planning of action, overall interpretation of language and is also responsible for storing both short- and long-term memory, which is why your cat tends to learn by doing rather than seeing. Not only that, but cats also possess more nerve cells in the visual areas of their brain than humans and most other mammals.

Which are the smartest cat breeds? Most people claim that the top three smartest cat breeds are Abyssinians, Siamese and Bengals. But this is because cat intelligence is usually ranked on sociability and willingness to interact with owners. But it’s not all about breed when considering how smart cats are, as a little tabby cat named Nora can actually play the piano! Apparently, she was never actually taught how to play the piano as a trick and instead picked it up by herself because her owner teaches piano at their home, so she learned through imitating them.

She’s been playing the piano since she was a year old and was the only cat out of six in the home that decided to pick it up. How’s that for cat intelligence?

Are cats smarter than dogs? The question of whether cats or dogs are smarter is a never-ending debate between cat and dog owners. Both sides seem to have valid reasons for thinking their furry friend is the smartest, but what does the science actually say on the matter? According to research into animal intelligence, dogs are generally seen as the smarter of the two due to the fact that they’re much more trainable. Dogs have been domesticated for longer than cats and seem to be more sociable and willing to please humans, which is why they’ve been successful at various tasks such as guiding the blind, search and rescue and for police work. But that’s only one way to measure intelligence. Cats can be viewed as more intelligent due to their unwillingness to follow humans, as they have their own mind and refuse to participate in meaningless tasks simply to please their owners. Additionally, where many may believe that the reason cats ignore them is because they can’t understand you, it’s actually due to the fact that cats don’t feel the need to acknowledge you as much as dogs do. As thesaying goes, “Dogs come when they’re called; cats take a message and get back to you.” Apparently, cats are not be as good at counting or identifying quantities of things as dogs or fish are. Yet in another study, it was discovered that cats are able to follow puzzles, but unlike dogs who will seek help from their owners, cats will simply keep trying until they get it. So, where dogs are definitely the more social of the two and are more likely to want to please their owners, cats are much more independent and prefer to do things for themselves.

Winter in Paris

APPING out a whistle-stop tour of Paris’s unmissable sights is no easy task. Compact and criss-crossed by airy boulevards, the city is a joy to walk around. Forget ‘Paris in the springtime’ - visiting Paris in the chilly months is where it’s at. Crisp, frosty air which rolls in off the Seine, giving a cherry blush to the cheeks of Parisians, cheerfully preparing for Christmas. Decorations strung along handsome, snowy streets, sparkling like stars. Cozy cafes and restaurants, steam creeping up the windows, offering shelter from a sudden rainstorm. And most practically, less tourists and cheaper hotel rates!

Each neighbourhood has its fair share of a long and colourful history, lingering on in gardens, monuments and belfries. It pays to take time to explore - particularly when breezy terraces, inventive pastry shops and on-trend coffee shops await along the way.

Eiffel Tower She may need no introduction, but even hardened Parisians can be swayed by her charms - particularly at night, when her lights twinkle alluringly. Some 100 runners race to the top every spring, but an everyday visit to the Iron lady takes a little bit of planning. Book a spot online to avoid the interminable queues, and treat yourself to some bubbles at the top if

36

you choose to take the stairs.

The Louvre You could easily spend entire days exploring this sprawling museum’s Egyptian treasures, Renaissance masterpieces and gilded royal apartments. On a hot summer’s day, the photogenic courtyards, cool fountains and shaded archways outside are just as enticing. For the swiftest entry, avoid the pyramid’s main entrance and sneak in through the much quieter shopping centre instead.

Père Lachaise Cemetery Jim Morrison may be this cemetery’s most famous resident, but there’s a lot more to this leafy sanctuary than

his graffiti-strewn tomb. Walk around its cobbled avenuesand pay your respects at Balzac’s imposing bronze bust, Oscar Wilde’s stone sarcophagus or the surprisingly poignant Communards’ wall.

Sacré-Cœur It’s no surprise this pretty basilica has captured the hearts of die-hard romantics. Squint and you might just see echoes of the Taj Mahal in its whitewashed dome. The Byzantine interiors are certainly impressive, but a trip up the Butte Montmartre is just as much about the views from its terraced gardens. For a cinematic spin, hop on the traditional carousel made famous by Amélie.

chocolat chaud. Make long-lasting memories with your kids by taking them to Disneyland Paris to see its magic come alive or visit one of Paris’s major landmarks like the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre museum. The window displays at the big department stores Galeries Lafayette and Le Bon Marche are a must-see during Christmas for its animated figures, stunning decorations and extravagant tree.

Places to eat... cheaply

ChampsElysées

Pottoka

Bookended by the Arc de Triomphe and the Place de la Concorde, Paris’s grandest boulevard needs no introduction. A tree-lined avenue flanked by designer boutiques, iconic restaurants and tourist hotspots, it hosts the city’s biggest events, including the Bastille Day parade. On the first Sunday of every month, the street closes to cars and becomes a pedestrian promenade.

4 Rue de l’Exposition Hailing from Bayonne, chef Sébastien Gravé takes inspiration from the Basque region in this small, charming restaurant. Everything at Pottoka is fresh, made in-house and prettily plated. The lunch menu is great value.

Le Bellerive 71 Quai de la Seine This is a great spot on the canal for a coffee. The Bellerive has a great terrace with views of the canal boats and a pétanque pitch - it doesn’t feel like Paris at all. Office workers flock here for the lunch menu of bistro classics.

Centre Pompidou Spot the building that doesn’t quite fit in central Paris. Designed in the 1970s by Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano, this avant-garde structure with its exterior escalators famously houses the National Museum of Modern Art. Admire works by Picasso and Matisse, and consider pieces by Andy Warhol and Anish Kapoor in Europe’s largest modern and contemporary art collection.

Palais Garnier To step into this 19th-century opera house and ascend its grand staircase is to experience French culture’s love

Le Galopin

Things to do There are so many reasons to visit Paris in the winter: from snapping up a bargain in the winter sales to admiring the Christmas lights and enjoying some

34 Rue Sainte-Marthe Le Galopin is a bit more of a splurge, and nowgere else in Paris does a tasting menu for €55! Their three starters, three mains and three desserts are beautifully crafted.

Becki’s

Neighbourhood Corner

Dear Readers,

I hope you are all well as we move into the Autumn and Winter months. As the half term holidays approach and many youngsters (and some grown ups too) will be looking forward to Halloween, it is always worth remembering that not everyone likes unknown callers at their address after dark, especially those wearing frightening costumes. If you are planning to go Trick or Treating this Halloween, there are a few things to keep in mind, l Be Safe, Be Seen - when out after dark, make sure to wear something bright and take extra care when crossing roads, take a grown up along to help. l Look out for properties with Pumpkins outside or in the window and decorations, these are the houses that are most likely to welcome a knock at the door from scary little monsters. l Some properties may have a leaflet in the window ‘Sorry No Trick or Treat’ or a similar message, please do not knock at those doors, as it is likely to cause distress and annoyance to the occupants.

l Remember that behaving in an Anti-Social way will attract the attention of Police or the ELDC ASB team. It is also a good time to remind everyone that it is not just at Halloween when unexpected callers turn up on your doorstep. l Remember official visitors should always make an appointment beforehand. l Look through the door viewer or window to see who is outside. l If you do decide to open the door, put a chain or bar across first. l Check the caller’s details before you let them into your home. Telephone the relevant organisation to confirm the caller’s identity. l Do not rely on a phone number the caller gives you. l Do not feel pressurised into buying items on your doorstep and be wary of callers who may offer home repairs or gardening. If in doubt, keep them out. Report any crimes or suspicious incidents to the Police on 101 or dial 999 in an emergency. your vision in print Until next time - keep safe,

Style and substance The new Nissan Quashqai

Nissan calls its e-Power tech. This basically uses a 1.5-litre engine as a generator to charge a battery. This then feeds an electric motor, which is the only power source to physically drive the wheels.

T’S not every manufacturer that can claim it coined the crossover sector, let alone popularising the model niche like Nissan’s first and second generation Qashqais did. The original car captured the imagination of millions, while the second built on that with even more style to back up the substance, winning countless awards in the process.

The incorporation of its hybrid tech across all of the planned powertrains has been made possible thanks to a new CMF-C platform, which Nissan claims has brought big benefits when it comes to packaging. Take the rear doors, which now open up to 85 degrees. Compared with the

previous-generation Qashqai, whose rear doors swept through a 70-degree arc, it means strapping in kids should be much easier. There is now more legroom, while a redesigned rear suspension layout has allowed the boot floor to be lowered, serving up 74 litres more than the previous model. Despite big 19-inch alloy wheels on Tekna models, with up to 20-inch alloys possible if you go for Tekna+ trim, the style does compromise the ride slightly. Top-spec cars on 20-inch wheels use a multi-link rear suspension set-up, which is a little jittery over smaller bumps due to the size of those rims, albeit with better body control at higher speed. Nissan has redesigned the power steering set-up as well to help improve feel and response, offering plenty of stability and secure handling.

Nissan has ticked the first box as this family SUV is a striking-looking machine. Designed here in the UK, new interpretations of the Japanese brand’s V-Motion grille, cool LED running lights and strong surfacing with nice design touches mean it will certainly turn heads. The second box is checked too, because the Qashqai boasts what

Thanks to up to a 60kg weight saving for the body due to extensive use of aluminium for the bonnet, doors and front wings, plus a composite tailgate, the Qashqai feels more agile than its predecessor.

fresher, more premium look.

Talking of ease of use, we arrive at a key feature. Updated infotainment aims to address issues with the secondgeneration Qashqai, and the nine-inch touchscreen is an improvement. Wired Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay are included, and most owners might prefer to use one of these two systems.

The 12.3-inch digital dash offers a degree of configurability and is standard alongside the main nineinch unit from N-Connecta trim and above, but like its counterpart, the resolution could be higher. Still, wireless phone charging is included, and is the quickest we’ve used in any car.

All this tech is integrated into a cabin that does feel a step up when it comes to quality. There’s soft-touch doublestitched material on the dash and a

autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian, cyclist and junction assist, collision warning, lane departure warning and prevention, blind spot warning, adaptive cruise control and seven airbags. On top of this, Tekna models also feature a head-up display, Nissan’s Around View Monitor with moving object detection, all-round parking sensors and LED lights with high beam assist. Of course, more kit and a more premium look and feel means higher prices too, but PCP finance and Nissan’s deals seem reasonable. Put down a £3,500 deposit on the lower-powered 138bhp 1.3 Tekna car and on a three-year deal limited to 10,000 miles per year monthly payments stand at £400 - not too bad for a versatile high-spec car with plenty of kit.

Fitness

Four reasons to do Parkrun T

HE pandemic threw our fitness routines off-course in early 2020, when most gyms, fitness centres and exercise classes were forced to close their doors.

Fortunately, these measures are starting to ease, so you might have returned to the gym, rejoined in-person exercise classes, and got your fitness goals back on track. Now, there’s good news for runners as the community Parkrun events have returned in most locations. Parkrun is a free 5km run held each Saturday at locations around the world, including the UK, US, Europe, Russia, South Africa and Japan. There are more than 2,000 locations worldwide, so you should be able to find one nearby. So, set your alarm and lace up your running shoes, as here are four great reasons to give Parkrun a go this weekend.

1. You don’t have to be a pro runner If someone mentioned running a 5K race, you probably imagine elite runners, training regimes and a precision diet. Fortunately, Parkrun is different. The Saturday event is open to all levels of experience, whether you’re a seasoned runner or you’ve never gone out

for a jog before, with an estimated 350,000 people turning up across the globe each weekend.

So if you’ve been looking for how to get fit, the Parkrun community can help you stay motivated, and you might even make some new friends. You can complete the route with a pram, your dog or in a wheelchair.

2. It improves your health There’s no doubt that exercise is good for you. Regular physical activity improves your overall health, reduces the risk of disease, counters the effects of depression and anxiety, helps reduce stress and promotes weight loss, especially if you use the best exercises for weight loss. But you probably already knew that. So, what about Parkrun specifically? In 2019, the organization commissioned an independent survey of over 60,000 participants. An incredible 91% said they felt a sense of personal achievement, 89% saw improvements to their fitness, while an impressive 69% said attending Parkrun improved their mental health.

3. There’s no pressure to hit time targets To participate in Parkrun, you only need

to register on the website and keep your unique barcode with you. Volunteers scan your barcode at the start and end of the run to record your time. Some people attach it to their top or keep a printout in their wallet. You can even choose to get it printed on a wristband to wear each Saturday.

These results are later uploaded to the Parkrun website so you can monitor your performance over time. If you find this a bit overwhelming, you can still take part without a barcode, and you won’t have your time recorded. And, if the public results put you off, you could privately monitor your performance with one of the best running watches instead.

4. It’s free If you’ve ever taken out a membership to a fitness center, you’ll know that it can quickly become an expensive habit. Many outdoor running races even charge somewhere between $10 and $50 for entry. Parkrun, however, is entirely free; all you need to do is turn up. There’s no additional cost for the time tracking either, just register on the website and make sure you have your barcode with you each Saturday. Though, it’s always worth having one of the best water bottles handy to keep hydrated around the 5km route.

Ensuring a lasting memorial for your loved ones

W

ith 2020 proving to be a difficult year for many of us we have found that attitudes towards life and family have changed. Many customers have visited cemeteries and churchyards to tend to the graves of loved ones and noticed that they are in need of a little TLC, in our ordinarily busy lives there can be little time left to clean and maintain memorials. Alpha Memorials do not just provide new headstones but can clean and refurbish memorials which many

customers have thought to be beyond saving. There is a sense of achievement for us in restoring the memorials to their former glory, but it is also important to make sure that they are installed correctly to comply with current safety standards to ensure that they last for many more generations. From replacement vase inserts and simple levelling work to full refurbishments please contact us to see how we can help.

The pictures on this page show examples of our work, before and after.

HOROSCOPES

Aries

(March 21 - April 19)

Until Nov. 10th, Venus and Jupiter urge you to unite or formalise a new relationship. You are more demanding, and you do not hesitate to ask for more attention from those close to you. However, you’re not short of beautiful people around you. If you are single, you have plenty to choose from!

Taurus

(April 20 - May 20)

Mars carries you until Nov. 14th. You are willing and precise, especially when it comes to organising, putting things in order or managing. Then you continue in the same vein, but more focused on your possible benefits.

Gemini

(May 21 - June 20)

Until Nov. 15th, Mars and Neptune bring discouragement - you lack motivation. Then, you find some courage to face your responsibilities. You have a good capacity to assimilate, and you know how to go the essential extra mile. Financially, you should be careful throughout November.

Cancer

(June 21 - July 22)

Emotionally, you start November with dynamism and good will. Yet, in the second half of the month, you will be struggling to get the same results, with sweat on your face. Be logical in your schedule, avoid superfluous trips and energy-consuming leisure activities.

Leo

(July 23 - August 22)

Until Nov. 10th, Venus and Jupiter are whispering in your ear ideas of commitment or formalisation of your links in one way or another, as common projects bring you closer. Until the 26th, happiness knocks at your door. Take a good look around you; your soulmate is on their way!

Virgo

(August 23 - September 22)

Even if Saturn constantly reminds you that your body must regenerate itself regularly at the risk of getting tired, you are in excellent shape and have a strong will. So if you keep an eye on your lifestyle, you will maintain a good inner balance.

Libra (September 23 - October 22) You will experience ups and downs, even though Jupiter will support you in your morale. Around the Nov. 20th, you will go from deep excitement to moments of fragility. At least take a short weekend to recharge your batteries. This autumn, the beauty of nature will soothe you deeply!

Scorpio

(October 23 - November 21)

Mercury favours your practical life and, as the New Moon gives you a nice relational impulse, your steps are praised. Mars is an excellent fuel until Nov. 14th. Then, avoid becoming too incisive at work at the risk of alienating some colleagues.

Sagittarius

(November 22 - December 21)

Until Nov. 10th, Venus and Jupiter will give you ideas of marriage and will favour complicit moments. When you are alone, you have the chance to meet your ideal. However, from the 15th onwards, a conflict linked to frustrations may erupt.

Capricorn

(December 22 - January 19)

Mars enhances your talents, especially when it comes to organising, putting things in order and managing. Take advantage of this because afterwards you are much less efficient, the days seem too short to get everything done, and you lack enthusiasm.

Aquarius

(January 20 - February 18)

You are not lacking in positive energy, so take advantage of this opportunity to take up a hobby or sport

that you may have given up. You can also take a weekend off to relax. Summer is over, but you still need sunshine and light to nourish you with energy and vitamin D.

Pisces

(February 19 - March 20)

You’re glowing, radiating a beautiful light and moving forward with your head held high, feeling good about yourself and your body. You are starting a new hobby and your dynamic and willing

temperament stimulates those around you. Beware of a certain distraction from Nov. 14th.
