Films Venom

They simply remove the green, but in the case of the weeds it leaves the roots intact and with the moss, spores are left behind and fed with there favourite food - water!

Pressure washing can remove the sand which the blocks are laid on, making your block drop and causing untold damage to your driveway which, in turn, could lead to having it relaid.

Top winter cruise destinations

inter is upon us. Morning and evening commutes with the faint sight of the sun as little more than a distant memory and icy patches are on the horizon.

Whether you want to get away from the cold, take advantage of low offseason pricing or visit the Southern Hemisphere during their summer, there are a number of destinations that shine during the winter months.

Here are our picks for the six best winter cruise destinations.

Caribbean & Bahamas

Why: In a word: warmth. If you need a second: sunlight.

Months of grey, cold days get tiresome but the Caribbean and Bahamas offer the perfect antidote. Forget all about snow and sleet as you snorkel past bright fish or steer your 4x4 over sand dunes in the bright sun. Multiple itineraries of varying lengths are available, so you can take as few or as many days as you want.

December through February are also mating season for turtles, tortoises and sea lions, so lots of opportunities for wildlife spotting. You’ve got a few options when it comes to Galapagos cruises, from tiny 16-passenger boats to the 98-passenger Celebrity Xpedition cruise ship.

Europe

Why: For lower prices and smaller crowds, Europe can’t be beaten - it also means a convenient no-fly cruise option or, at most, a short flight to your destination. Winter cruising in Europe is mainly confined to the Mediterranean, where you’ll be able to visit Rome, Venice, Barcelona and other iconic Med cities. Another winter option in Europe are the coastal Norwegian cruises offered by Hurtigruten, which guarantees sightings of the Northern Lights on any classic round trip 12-night sailing between October 1 and March 31(If you don’t see the Lights, you’ll get a free cruise).

Galapagos

Why: The Galapagos cruise season runs year-round, but if you’re looking to escape the cold weather at home, why not tick off this bucket list destination at the same time?

Other reasons the Galapagos is a great winter cruise destination (it’s actually summer in the Galapagos) are the calmer seas and excellent underwater visibility you find during these months, which make for great snorkelling.

Australia & New Zealand

Why: It’s summer Down Under, and while certain parts of Australia might be too hot for an extended visit (namely the country’s centre and north), its high tourist season in both countries, with cities on New Zealand’s South Island and along Australia’s eastern and southern edges featuring some of the best weather of the year. Whether you’re checking out the stunning natural beauty of New Zealand or taking in the culture of Australia’s major cities like Sydney or Melbourne, there’s no shortage of sights to see and activities to participate in during a shore excursion in either country.

Middle East

Why: Some cruise destinations are just too hot to visit in the summer. The Middle East is one such region, with average temperatures in Dubai in July hovering near 105 degrees. And while the height of the Middle East cruise season is in late autumn (mostly November), cruisers can still find plenty of sailings from December through March

(and even into April) visiting ports in Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Most cruises to the Middle East are one week in length and operated by European lines like MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises, although you can usually also find sailings from Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity and Crystal’s yacht division. The Nile River cruising season is also at its peak in the winter.

Southeast Asia

Why: Like the Middle East, Southeast Asia (comprising countries such as Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam) is hot, humid and downright uncomfortable to visit in the summer. Cruise lines know this and time many of their sailings in the region for the late autumn and winter months. Both ocean and river cruises spend time during the winter in Southeast Asia with ocean lines like Royal Caribbean and Princess visiting Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore, among others and river cruises plying the Mekong in Vietnam and the Irrawaddy in Myanmar (Burma).

Late Autumn gardening tasks The leaves are falling, as well as the temperatures, and the rain has started to come more often. Yes, winter is definitely on its way. But, that doesn’t mean there are no jobs to be done in your garden in November – definitely not! You will have done a lot to prepare your garden for the winter back in October, but there are still tasks to tick off your to-do list this month. And, we’re here to help with expert gardening tips and advice to get you through this period.

Autumn is often treated as a time to hack everything back for a big tidy up before winter really sets in. However it’s actually not a good time to prune many trees and shrubs – you are better to do this late in winter, or in early spring.

Cherries, if pruned, are very vulnerable to silver leaf disease.

And evergreens are usually tackled in early spring, or after flowering.

Saying this, there are some plants that should be pruned in the autumn – these include beech, hawthorn and hazel trees. As well as climbing and shrub roses. Vigorous growers like buddleja, dogwoods and lavatera can be reduced by half to lessen problems of wind rock over the winter. The most important part of autumn pruning is removing dead, diseased, or misplaced branches. Always aim to make a clean cut, either back to a bud on living wood, or back to the stem it’s growing from. After pruning, scatter a few handfuls of bonemeal around the root area of shrubs to stimulate root growth over winter, and mulch with garden compost.

If you have grapevines in your garden, then you will also need to prune these in November. Cut back all fruited shoots to one or two buds from the main stem. This can be carried out between November and late winter. If your grapevines under glass are then it’s best to prune them sooner, rather than later, so that winter sunlight coming into

the greenhouse is not blocked out.

As long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged, keep planting out pot-grown hardy climbers, shrubs and trees – and, you must remember to water them through the winter.

It’s also a good time to plant bare root specimens which are usually cheaper to buy.

Sow some broad beans! These beans, which are also known as ‘fava’ beans are a cool weather crop and can be sown in autumn/early spring to give a succession of pods to pick from early, to mid, summer – delicious! They like a deep, rich, moist but free draining soil and plenty of sunlight. Some varieties can grow to around 90cm high, so make sure you prepare for this when choosing a spot to plant them. If your garden gets a lot of wind, then you may be better to grow a dwarf variety – such as ‘The Sutton’.

Once they’re planted you can look forward to harvesting them come summer – make sure you pick them before the beans grow huge (beans should be about the size of a thumbnail when popped from their pod).

Keep on top of leaves that are falling on the lawn, beds and in your pond. Rake them up regularly to keep on top of this task.

It’s your last chance to plant some tulip bulbs! By planting them this late in the year you’ll have a much better chance of preventing the bulbs being infected with the fungal disease, tulip fire. Just don’t leave it too late – if you can get them planted right at the start of the month. They’ll be best to plant in a lightly shaded spot that gets more sun as spring progresses.

If you gave your lawnmower some care last month before thinking about packing it away, then you must remember to drain out any petrol. Unleaded petrol does not keep, and may cause you issues come spring when you try to start it up again. This also applies for hedge-trimmers and any other machinery requiring petrol.

The new Focus has all the bases covered

T

he Ford Focus has become such a staple of the British car landscape that you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who has never owned, test-driven or got a lift in one of these enormously popular hatchbacks. In the UK we love it so much, in fact, that we’ve parked more than two million on our driveways since it was launched in 1998.

Tastes have changed significantly since then, of course. Not only have SUVs arrived on the scene, but even small family cars have become relatively plush. Just take a look at the latest Mercedes A-Class - once an ungainly mini-MPV, this entry-level offering now comes with slick styling and a high-tech cabin that wouldn’t look out of place on the set of a sci-fi blockbuster.

The last thing Ford can afford to do with the new Focus, then, is rest on its laurels. Thankfully, first impressions are

good. The new car’s swoopy bodywork looks much sportier than the car it replaces and each version - from the offroad-y Active to the posh Vignale – gets unique bumpers to help it stand out.

The version we spent most time in was the ST-Line X - a sporty mid-range model that mimics the look of a full-blown high-performance ST version, but without the hefty price tag or teeth-rattling ride.

That doesn’t mean Ford’s scrimped on equipment, however - inside you get leather seats with flashy red stitching, lots of soft materials and a touchscreen infotainment system with sat nav and smartphone mirroring features.

There’s enough space in the boot for a baby buggy or a few suitcases, but the VW Golf and Vauxhall Astra are roomier still Thankfully, all the extra creature comforts don’t encroach into passenger space. The new Focus is roomier than ever and even tall adults have space to stretch out in the back.

Unfortunately, the same can’t be said of its boot. Sure, there’s enough space for a baby buggy or a few suitcases, but the VW Golf and Vauxhall Astra are roomier still.

The Focus creeps ahead of these rivals as soon as you hit the road - especially in sporty ST-Line guise. It grips keenly and barely leans in tight corners so you have plenty of confidence when hurtling down a twisty country road.

This is partly thanks to our ST-Line car’s fancy independent rear suspension - something you don’t get on entry-level cars. Still, even with the standard set-up the Focus sneaks a grin onto your face much more readily than the Golf and Astra.

Go for a 180bhp ST-Line model and it feels much perkier than the figures suggest. Accelerating from 0-62mph in just under nine seconds might not set your world alight, but the buzzy three-cylinder growl this 1.5-litre petrol engine produces makes it feel a whole lot faster.

When you’ve finished having fun, Ford claims this engine returns 51mpg – not bad for a reasonably sporty hatchback - and it cruises along relatively quietly, too.

The manual gearbox is a little notchy but the automatic is smooth and finds the right gears at the right time, which helps take the sting out of seemingly endless inner-city jams.

Also helping to make rush hour a little less stressful is the Focus’ raft of driver-assistance systems. You can get it with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and even a feature that’ll stamp on the brakes and steer for you to try and avoid obstacles in the road ahead.

The Focus, then, has almost everything you could want from an affordable hatchback and makes a worthy successor to the outgoing family favourite.

Neneh Cherry Broken Politics October 19 - Awal Neneh Cherry’s fifth solo album‘Broken Politics’ is preceded by the hushed, tense ‘Shot Gun Shack’, which alludes to cycles of fear and violence. “Pick up the gun, you know you gonna use it,” she sings over a trip-hop-styled beat. “You know that gun is gonna get loaded/ Say my name before you pull it.” Cherry said the song title was inspired by a

Fitness Matters Best exercises for a flat stomach H

ands up if you want a toned stomach?

Well, with a little hard work you can get the stomach of your dreams by doing these exercises.

1 The plank

To complete this exercise lie flat on your stomach and place your forearms on the floor. Then, press down with your forearms and push your self up – using your toes as support - until your head, neck, back and legs are all in a straight line.

This is an excellent flat stomach exercise because it strengthens your inner core muscles, upper and lower abdominal muscles and burns more calories in comparison to other abs exercises, such as sit ups. This is because to do the plank you have to engage the muscles in your legs, arms and back too.

2 Boat pose

If you want to try a challenging flat stomach exercise you should introduce the boat pose to your workout. Doing this yoga pose regularly will quickly help you reach your goal of a flat stomach. To begin, sit on the floor with bent knees.

Lean back slightly and then bring your legs up and straighten them until your body forms a V shape. Your arms should be stretched out and parallel to one another. Keep your palms facing inwards. Remember to engage your abs muscles whilst doing this exercise and keep your stomach relaxed and flat.

This is a fantastic abs exercise because it targets and strengthens your core muscles and improves balance.

3 Bicycle crunch

This exercise is a must if you want a flat stomach. To begin the Bicycle crunch, lie on your back. Place your palms beneath your head and lift your legs until they are positioned at a 90-degree angle. Keeping your right hand on your head, twist your body, bringing your right elbow towards

your left knee. Alternate your limbs, bringing your left elbow toward your right knee. To get maximum results this exercise should be executed slowly.

The bicycle crunch is a great exercise to include in your flat stomach workout as research has shown that the exercise works all of the major abdominal muscles.

4 Skipping

As well as doing abs exercises, if you want a flat stomach you should try to incorporate some cardiovascular exercises into your workout. Although running, cycling and swimming are all excellent forms of cardiovascular training, skipping is useful in this instance because it can be performed indoors with your other abs exercises.

Skipping for fitness requires the correct technique: you only need to lift your feet a few centimetres off the ground each time the rope passes and ensure your heels don’t touch the floor. Also, make sure you turn the rope with your wrists, rather than using your whole arms.

Skipping works your transverse abdominis, rectus abdominis and your inner and outer obliques. It is essential to include cardiovascular training in your flat stomach workout, as it will help you burn calories and lose weight alongside helping you to tone your abs.

5 Medicine ball slam

For this exercise, you will need a non-bouncing medicine ball. Using both hands, lift your medicine ball above your head and place your feet shoulder-width apart. Your knees should be slightly bent. Now, explosively bring the ball down, bending at the waist and throw it at the floor. Try to get into a rhythm so that you can catch the ball once it has hit the floor. During this exercise you should not lose your balance or posture. If you do, it might be because the medicine ball you are using is too heavy.

The medicine ball slam is a total body exercise that strengthens your core stability and will help you to tone up your stomach.

aving a well-balanced diet is a vital part in getting rid of any fat around your stomach, and introducing new food groups into your everyday life is simpler than you think. Here are five key foods that you should include in your flat belly diet.

1 Whole grains

Introducing more whole grains into your diet is an effective way of dropping those unwanted pounds.

Whole grains are a fantastic lowfat source of slow-release energy, keeping you going throughout the day. And, thanks to their high levels of fibre, your digestive system will become healthier and more regulated. Whole grains also have the added benefit of stopping fat from being stored around the stomach, by lowering the insulin and cortisol (the stress hormone) within your body.

To stick to a flat stomach diet, opt for grains that are still in their natural form, such as oats, spelt, brown rice and buckwheat.

One of the major elements that could be hampering your efforts in achieving that flat belly could be a lack of water in your diet. Keep your pet safe this Autumn The arrival of autumn brings a new set of challenges to pet owners, especially when the clocks go back, so here are some tips for keeping you and your pet safe and well as the nights draw in.

Dogs

l Look out for frostbite. It is most common on the ears, the tail and footpads and looks pale, glossy or white. Take them to the vet if you feel this is developing.

l Even with the darker mornings and nights and the worsening weather, your dog still needs regular exercise.

Your dog is unlikely to get the same level of exercise and access to the outdoors that he had during the summer, but it can lead to behavioural problems if your dog does not have enough activity and mental stimulation. l If your dog is getting less exercise during the week, his fitness levels will not be as high as in the summer, so don’t overdo his exercise at the weekends as he could experience health problems. l If you are walking your dog early in the morning or after work, invest in a reflective vest or jacket for yourself and even a reflective collar and lead for your dog. If you take your dog to a safe area where he can run free, you can purchase small flashing lights that are attached to the dog’s collar so you can see where he is and when he stops for a poo! The blinkers come in different colours which is useful if you have more than one dog. l If the weather prevents you walking your dog, you can play scent games in the house or garden by hiding treats or toys and letting him search for them. Make it very easy and obvious to start with and gradually build up the level of difficulty. If you feed dry food you can even scatter his meal over the lawn and let him forage for it. l Remember that if your dog is getting less overall exercise, make sure you adjust his food intake accordingly so he doesn’t gain weight. The same applies if you are doing more training with treats as a reward.

Cats

l Some cats get a lot less exercise in these colder months as they don’t go outside so much. Make sure you

l If your cat does continue to go outdoors during the colder months, make sure they don’t stay out for too long especially when temperature is below freezing.

l Prevent potential burns by protecting your cat from open fires and heaters. l Sound your horn or bang the bonnet before starting your car as cats do have a tendency to curl up on the tyre or near the engine. l Cats are the most inclined to eat anti-freeze so keep it locked away. l Make a cosy place for your cat to sleep with some warm bedding, free from draughts. You could even raise the bed off the floor as they love that.

Rabbits and guinea pigs

l If your rabbits or guinea pigs are kept outside, now is the time to start planning their location for the colder months ahead. If you have a garage or shed you can move them into there for the winter. If you don’t, their hutch will need to be protected from the weather to keep them warm, spare blankets or off cuts of carpet can be used as insulation. l Hang something from the front of the hutch to protect them from the elements. l Do not use hot water bottles or electric blankets as they can burn your small furry pet. Instead add extra bedding to keep them warm and more cosy. l Rabbits and guinea pigs can have a little extra hay in addition to their usual feed to increase their calorie intake, they don’t hibernate like other animals so they need the little extra. l To stop their water bottles freezing you can try wrapping them in bubble wrap.

I often get asked the question ‘What is Medical Negligence or what is it that you do’?

Put simply, I help injured patients receive compensation when they have received a substandard level of care by their treating health professional. That health professional could be a Doctor, Consultant, Surgeon, Nurse or even a Dentist.

Common cases of negligence include failure to diagnose, delays in treatment, failure to treat, birth injuries, surgical injuries and prescription errors.
