The benefits of yoga With Christine from Harmony Yoga
Hello, I hope that you are keeping well and have had a chance to practice the sitting in a chair pose that we discussed last month. This time we will look at another simple but effective posture which is relaxing - the forward bend.
sustainable. Many of us have started a class or home exercise
The forward bend
regime in this way but it's often the case that life overtakes our good intentions and time for exercise goes out of the window. Yoga is a lifestyle and not just another form of exercise. Once this is adopted our physical and mental health can change dramatically. Through deep relaxation, adopting a mindful attitude and daily yoga practice, negative thoughts and ways of thinking will change into positive thoughts and a positive mindset. Positivity attracts positivity. Negative thoughts are our own worst enemy, controlling our actions and lives and affecting our physicality. By taking control of our thoughts we take back control of our lives in a positive way and our mental and physical health can and will improve dramatically. We will look into this further into this in the coming months, but for now let’s end this one with a relaxing technique called palming. Start by sitting at a table and rubbing the hands together so that heat builds up between the palms. Place your elbows on the table with your hands palms up and rest your head onto the table with your palms over your closed eyes. Be aware of any sensations within your body, allowing thoughts to come and go
Start by sitting on a chair (a firm seat chair is best) and place your feet firmly on the floor body width apart. Fold forward from the hips, keeping the back as flat as possible and lay the torso on your thighs. Let your arms flop to the floor, placing the backs of the hands face down and let your fingers curl naturally. Allow the head and shoulders to completely relax towards the floor and let any tension float away. Try to be mindful of how each area of the body is feeling - you will surprised how much tension we hold in so many areas of the body, and by being mindful when doing yoga practice we can develop an awareness of where this is and then allow it to float away . Inhale deeply and allow the torso to expand and stretch sideways and forward then exhale slowly. Repeat this breath 5-10 times - whichever feels right for you. Practice this pose, along with the sitting in a chair pose that we talked about last time, as often as you wish throughout the day. The more we practice the more an activity becomes part of our daily routine without having to think about it too much. These postures can be done anywhere and only take a short time, but the benefits of daily yoga practice - even if its only a few minutes a day - is ten fold. Too much attention is placed on formal exercise that can last for an hour or more which is time consuming and often not
without giving them any fuel (this can take practice as the human mind is a busy place - but you will get there). Go within and begin to tune into to your instincts concentrating on breathing deeply though the nose and out through the nose for as long as you feel is right for you. I hope you have enjoyed this lesson and will practice the techniques and postures we have touched upon. Please feel free to contact me for further advice or to book a 1-1 personal yoga session at
harmonyyoga@protonmail.com.
Until next time, Namaste - I salute you. x

Health
How to relieve stress-related health problems n our last issue, we described the effects on our health of stress.Buy why would stress make us sick? Why would an emotional feeling wreck havoc on our bodies? Stress isn't only a feeling. It's a built-in physiologic response to a threat. When you're stressed, your body responds. Your blood vessels constrict. Your blood pressure and pulse rise. You breathe faster. Your bloodstream is flooded with hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. While the number of health problems related to stress might be alarming, don't despair. Studies suggest that stress management techniques will not only make you feel better, but they might have concrete health benefits. The next time you feel stressed, here are four stress relief tips you can try.
1 Breathe deeply Just a few minutes of deep breathing can calm you and tame the physiologic stress response. While building in a specific time to relax each day is a good idea, one advantage to deep breathing for stress relief is that you can do it anywhere - at your desk or in your (parked) car, for instance. It is recommended that as you breathe out, you relax a specific muscle group. Start with
the muscles in your jaw. On the next breath out, relax your shoulders. Move through the different areas of your body until you're feeling calm.
2 Focus on the moment. When you're stressed, you're probably living in the future or the past. You're worried about what to do next or regretful about
something you've already done. To get some stress relief, instead try focusing on what you're doing right now. You can calm yourself by bringing yourself back to the present moment. If you're walking, feel the sensation of your legs moving. If you're eating, focus on the taste and the sensation of the food."
3 Reframe the situation So you're already running late and then find yourself stuck in terrible traffic. Getting worked up is a natural reaction, but it won't help you at all. Rather than swearing and pounding the steering wheel, get a different perspective. Look at that time as an opportunity - a few minutes to yourself where you don't have any other obligations.
4 Keep your problems in perspective It might seem facile to think this way, but the next time you're feeling stressed out, think about the things for which you're grateful. We get stressed when we focus so much on a specific problem that we lose perspective. You need to remind yourself of the basic ways in which you're lucky - that you have family and friends, that you can see, that you can walk. It can be a surprisingly effective method for stress relief.

Gardening tips for December
Many of us do more shopping and planning for our gardens during the winter months than actual gardening, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. In the warmer zones, December is the start of pleasant weather and a chance to enjoy planting cool season vegetables and flowers that don’t tolerate our summers.
Lawns
Avoid walking on lawns on frosty mornings when it is blanketed by heavy frost or snow, as this will damage the grass beneath. If it’s a mild winter, continue to cut the lawn if it’s growing, but raise the height of the mower blades. Spike lawns with a garden fork to improve drainage and aeration. Keep clearing leaves off the lawn to let the light in and prevent dead patches appearing. Send your lawnmower and shears to be serviced and sharpened while they are in less demand.
Gardening tip
Trees and shrubs
This is the ideal time to clean the greenhouse, pots using a pot brush and trays in readiness for plant raising. Wash down all of your garden tools and give them a wipe of linseed oil on the wooden and metal areas to help prevent rusting.
Protect newly planted trees, hedges and shrubs from cold winds and frosts, which can loosen and lift the roots. Gently re-firm them in if you notice this problem, and erect a temporary netting windbreak if there is no natural shelter. Thick dry mulches will protect the roots from cold, and branches can be covered with fleece, or even packed with dry straw and then covered with fleece, for tender plants. A wooden frame with clear polythene stretched over it does a similar job for evergreens without blocking the light, but don’t let the polythene touch the leaves, as condensation could freeze or cause rots.
Plant some shrubs for winter interest. If you still haven’t planted your tulip bulbs there is still time, provided the ground isn’t frozen.
Flowers & Plants
Should you have a few spare hours available, pruning dormant plants quite severely will prove beneficial for their growth next season. Gather up fallen leaves from around the base of rose bushes which suffered from blackspot or rust this summer, to reduce the chance of infection next year. Move containers of shrubs or bedding plants to a sheltered spot; clustering them together helps protect the root systems from suffering frost damage. Sowings can be made of coleus, cyclamen and geranium provided suitable temperatures can be maintained. Taller growing bush roses can be pruned down by about half which will prevent the wind from causing them to become loose through swaying and in turn damaging the roots. The branches of standard roses should also be shortened. Bare-rooted rose bushes can be planted this month.
Winter pond care
Use pond heaters to keep ponds from freezing over, as this can be fatal for fish and other pond life. There are other precautions you can take to prevent your pond freezing over, if you do not have a heater. To make a hole in frozen ponds, hold a saucepan of hot water on the surface until melted through. Do not crack the ice, as this is harmful to fish.
Wild Birds
Wash and disinfect bird feeders and bird tables. Clean out bird baths too. Hang fat balls and keep bird feeders topped up to attract birds, who will in turn eat pests in your garden. Please remember to hang bird feeders at a height so that they will be beyond the reach of cats. To advertise text advert to 07868 433 225

5 Easy & Simple ways to lose your Christmas weight With Christmas just around the corner, you’re probably sitting on the sofa right now, dreaming of leftover’s, turkey sandwiches and even more alcohol, pondering on the thought of what you’re going to change next year. Most of you will be thinking about the weight you’re going to lose, the muscle you’re going to gain and general improvement everyone will see in your fitness. If you’re planning to keep on over indulging until at least New Years eve), then forget about joining the gym and start with these five very simple steps to a better body.
1. Water, water, water So many people don’t drink enough. You know that you’re meant to drink around 1.5 litres a day (8 glasses), which really isn’t hard - get a water bottle to monitor how much drinking. Start your day with cup of hot water and a slice of lemon to detox the body as soon as you wake up and drink two glasses of water before each meal you’ll think you’re fuller than you are and eat less.
2. Snack on harder foods
3. Get up, stand up
Whenever you find yourdelf walking across the room to yet another box of Christmas chocolates, stop - and go for a bag of unsalted, unshelled pistachios or even oranges instead. Simple as it sounds, foods that require a little more effort to eat forces you to slow down and make you more aware of your calories.
Apparently the average person now sits down for around 8 - 10 hours a day. This kind of sedentary lifestyle unsurprisingly leads to bad health and weight gain. Whether you are at work or still on holiday for the next few days then be sure to make a few simple changes, from getting off the train or bus a few stops earlier or walking around the block on your lunch break.
4. Choose your seat wisely You have family dinner parties to come in the final days of December (Covid prevailing) and one small change you can make is choosing where you sit - it might sounds odd, but since most food congregates in the middle of the table, be sure to place yourself at the end instead, where you’re less likely to eat seconds or start picking once the wine has started to flow.
5. Swap drinks Obviously we are not going to tell you to stop drinking (although come January we might just do that), but we are going to suggest that you make a couple of small swaps. Try changing that glass of red for a Gin & Tonic, or even the usual tonic water for a slim-line equivalent. ... But the best advice of all, as obvious as it seems, is to avoid over-indulging at all over the festive period! To advertise text advert to 07868 433 225

How to hibernate your tortoise Tortoises are not native to the UK and they have very specific needs if they’re to keep healthy. As the British weather is not suitable for tortoises to live outside all year round, owners need to provide them with the right temperature and humidity. One of the main causes of health problems and death in pet tortoises is inadequate hibernation, so it’s really important to get it right.
stomachs during hibernation and make them very unwell, so this is important. Bathing your pet regularly in shallow, lukewarm water will help digestion, and help also keep them hydrated.
Using a new refrigerator with thermometers and a container with substrate is the best way to monitor a tortoise. Although more expensive, it will help you to make sure your pet stays happy, healthy and safe.
l
Once your tortoise has digested their food, you can drop the
Does my tortoise need to hibernate? l Not all species of tortoise hibernate, so find out whether your tortoise is a hibernating or nonhibernating species. l Even some hibernating species of tortoise should not be hibernated for a variety of reasons, such as if your tortoise is underweight or has an illness. l Take your tortoise to the vet for a health check before you decide if your pet should hibernate particularly if you’ve recently got your tortoise. l Begin to prepare your tortoise for hibernation in autumn in the UK.
Preparing your tortoise for hibernation Good preparation is essential. You must have the correct equipment and help your tortoise to prepare. Before hibernating, tortoises should not be fed for a period of time. This depends on your tortoise’s size - ask your vet for guidance. Before beginning hibernation, tortoises should be kept in an ambient temperature of 13C to make sure their food is properly digested. Undigested food can ferment in their
temperature to their hibernation temperatures of around 5C +/two degrees.
During hibernation Weigh your tortoise at least monthly and wake them up early if they’re losing more than one per cent of their body weight monthly.
Gradually reduce your pet’s daylight hours throughout the preparation period.
Hibernation housing dos and don’ts l It’s really important to make sure your tortoise has a suitable environment to hibernate in. l If you can’t accurately control the temperature of your tortoise’s hibernation housing then you could be putting your pet at serious risk.
Near-freezing temperatures can cause serious health problems and even death, and a temperature that is too high will wake your tortoise early. l It is also not unheard of for rats to breach the boxes and eat the tortoises, so it’s essential that you make their housing secure.
The time a tortoise should be hibernated for depends on their size. Small tortoises should be hibernated for around eight to 10 weeks, and even the tortoises should for for more than 16 weeks.
After hibernation Spring temperatures in the UK are not high enough for a tortoise to live outside while recovering from hibernation,, your tortoise will need to live indoors for a while Immediately after hibernation your tortoise should be warmed to the appropriate temperature, bathed regularly and offered food. If a tortoise does not eat after a week, you must contact a vet who has experience with tortoises.

Motoring Services Guide
O
N the face of it, the Ford Kuga is bang on trend. Not only is it a large SUV with a hint of sportiness, it’s also available in plug-in hybrid (PHEV) form to keep your running costs low and your green credentials high.
Performance and drive The 2.5 Duratec 225PS PHEV, which is the plug-in hybrid, is our favourite version. It pairs a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined power output of 222bhp, and it’s a pretty nippy combo; during our testing, it managed 0-60mph in a very respectable 8.6sec. That sort of pace puts it towards the sharp end of the performance spectrum in the large SUV class, and makes it quicker than the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
stiffer setup, the Kuga follows the contours of the road more closely, which leads to a busier ride.
Handling The steering is very quick and precise, which makes the Kuga feel eager to turn in to corners, and has a consistent desire to self-centre. It’s a gentle sensation but an unusual one. The Kuga is a tall car, and, in PHEV form - with its extra battery pack - quite heavy. As a result, it suffers from a certain amount of body lean through corners, but that’s not unusual for an SUV of this size.
Sat nav and infotainment You get an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system on all models, and the Kuga’s touchscreen is easier to use than the Peugeot 5008’s or Mitsubishi Outlander’s, as well as being far superior to the Honda CR-V’s Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone mirroring are included with all Kugas, allowing you to operate certain phone apps (i.e. for music or sat-nav) through the car’s touchscreen, plus you get a wireless charging pad for compatible phones.
Officially, the PHEV has an electric-only range of up to 35 miles. We managed 31 miles during our real-world testing, while most of its rivals will do more like 20 miles on a full charge. The electric motor is powerful enough to get you up to motorway speeds on its own, and, if you need more power, the petrol engine will automatically cut in when required. Two regular petrol engines are also available - the 118bhp 1.5 Ecoboost 120 and 148bhp 1.5 Ecoboost 150.
At the sharp end The new Ford Kuga The 1.5 Ecoblue 120 and 2.0 Ecoblue 150 diesels mirror the power outputs of the two petrols, plus there’s a 187bhp Ecoblue 190 diesel.
Suspension and ride comfort The best ride comes with the softer suspension setup that’s fitted to Zetec, Titanium and Vignale trim. It’s a little bouncy compared with the Peugeot 5008 or Honda CR-V, but otherwise it’s pretty comfortable. ST-Line trim comes with a stiffer sports suspension setup - except if you order the 2.0 Ecoblue 190 engine. With the
52
Interior Driving position and dashboard The good news for lovers of tall SUVs is that the Kuga has a relatively lofty driving position. The seat is supportive and there’s plenty of adjustment, including for lumbar support on all trims. Go for ST-Line trim or above and you’ll get a 12.3in digital instrument display (in lieu of conventional analogue dials). The graphics are sharp and it shows clearly important driving information, including battery charge on the PHEV. Its contents can be customised to your preference.

Motoring Services Guide Passenger and boot space Front The Kuga’s high SUV roofline gives it a decent amount of front head room, and its interior is wide enough to ensure that you won’t be clashing elbows with your passenger. Front leg room is fine for six-footers.
Boot Although it’s less spacious than the Honda CR-V or Peugeot 5008, the boot has its strong points. There’s no lip at the entrance to cause nuisance when lifting heavy items in
Rear Space in the back is generous - in fact, it takes the expansive Honda CR-V or Hyundai Santa Fe to rival the Kuga for rear space at this price.
Safety and security The Kuga is well provisioned with safety kit. Lane-keeping assistance comes as standard, as does automatic emergency braking (AEB), which can stop the car automatically if it senses an imminent crash. Blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition and adaptive cruise control are available as part of the pricey Driver’s Assistance Pack.
Costs
As such, a pair of tall adults will have no problem getting comfortable, and even a third, middle-seat occupant will find enough head and leg room, despite the fact that the middle seat is slightly raised. and out, and the boot floor is a square shape, unhindered by wheelarch intrusion.
Cheaper, petrol-powered Kugas are competitively priced against many large SUV rivals, such as the Peugeot 5008. The PHEV model, meanwhile, substantially undercuts other plug-in hybrid SUVs, such as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. The Kuga is cheaper than many of its rivals on a monthly PCP deal, too, whether in petrol, diesel or electrified guise.
Verdict The Kuga is a decent large SUV in any guise but really makes sense if you opt for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model. It’s one of the best plug-in hybrid large SUVs there is, providing a decent electric-only range, good fuel economy, tidy enough handling - and all for a sensible price.

HOROSCOPES Aries
(March 21 - April 19)
If you are tempted to overspend, try to resist the urge. This is likely to be a very social period in your calendar and you may need to watch any potential strain on your finances over the festive period. You will be in great demand and others will seek out your company.
Taurus
(April 20 - May 20)
Your patience could well be put to the test. There could be a situation where you will need to forgive and forget, rather than harping on about something that has irritated you. Your emotions may be up and down but mentally you will remain strong and able to deal with whatever may happen.
Gemini
(May 21 - June 20)
This could be a profitable period for those born under the sign of the twins. You will be confident enough to take risks, and if you make investments this month, they may prove profitable in the future. An approach to your bosses about a pay rise may prove more successful than it has previously.
Cancer
(June 21 - July 22)
Cancer charts show you may need to slow down and take more care of your health. You may also need time to de-stress and get away from the workplace. A few hours of relaxation, especially at weekends, could be of great benefit to you.
Leo
(July 23 - August 22)
You are going to experience a certain amount of fulfillment where your career is concerned and much satisfaction will be gained from doing well and achieving your goals. Others will seek you out for advice which they will follow and you could find yourself in demand.
Virgo
(August 23 - September 22)
You will be dealing with a lot of money-related issues during this period and your horoscope predictions suggest that any financial speculations you make will be fruitful, though you will not indulge in impulsive spending; rather, you will be taking a more measured and careful approach.
Libra (September 23 - October 22) Life may slow down for Librans, offering some welcome rest from the recent whirl of activity, giving you time to spend with family. It is a time for quiet reflection, recovery and an ideal time to re-charge your batteries.
Scorpio
(October 23 - November 21)
This is likely to be a spiritual phase for Scorpions, where you will be in a reflective and contemplative mood. It is entirely likely that stepping back from the business in your life will make you spiritually stronger. Don’t feel guilty about taking time out to relax.
Sagittarius
(November 22 - December 21)
Sagittarians may see the need to sort out minor issues in personal relationships. It would be beneficial to all concerned if both parties could listen to the other and act directly and quickly upon what has been said. You may need to curb their idealism and teach them to be more practical.
Capricorn
(December 22 - January 19)
You may feel a bit fragile - whether this is due to stress at work, family problems or simply that your work/life balance is off-kilter. In any case, Capricorns could find alternative therapies very helpful, especially when symptoms like tiredness, headaches and indigestion are vague annoyances.
Aquarius
(January 20 - February 18)
Your finances will be in great shape during this phase and there could be an influx of money which you didn’t know was coming. This will mean that you can fulfill some of your wishes or desires. It could be a lucky time for you in all aspects of your financial dealings, so don’t hold back!
Pisces
(February 19 - March 20)
You could find yourself in a quiet and reflective mood and feel a bit down and dejected. It may be that you are struggling with the pace of your life at the moment so be mindful that life doesn’t always have to go at a hundred miles an hour.
