Consider a life without music... Music is not just sound or even just notes. Imagine listening to the morning radio with just words. How about walking around the local shops in silence. Just think of birthdays, you can have your cake but no one will sing to you. What about on your wedding day, just you walking down the aisle to hundreds of pairs of eyes staring at you in anticipation. Consider watching a movie with just dialogue, I know for sure it would be a bland couple of hours for me, and I have to mention Christmas! No Carols, No Slade, No Mr. Bublé! it’s just unimaginable.

We would all lose a universal language. Music helps us express emotion like nothing else can. For some people, there would be no other way to get through the morning, to finish strong on that last gruelling set of reps, to calm

pitches, arranged in various orders for various durations; nothing more. Right? But don’t under estimate its power and importance to us all. I have been fascinated by the language of music for many years now, how “dots and sticks on a page” can come to life and say so much more than words. Plus the possibilities of these “dots and sticks” are just endless and they just keep giving.

down after a difficult day. Music can express in the most personal way to someone how much you love them.

Whether we are listeners, learners or performers, let’s all love and treasure the music we have, and embrace and encourage the music learning and performance of the future.

And all music is just 12 distinct

I vote for a life “with” music.

Two-hour Christmas dinner

his roast turkey recipe is served with shortcut sides to make your life so much easier. You will need to buy some ready-made cheats, but the payoff is that the whole delicious Christmas dinner is done in less than two hours!

Ingredients For the turkey and stuffing l 2.5kg/5lb 8oz turkey crown (fully thawed if frozen) l 6 rashers smoked streaky bacon l sunflower oil, for greasing l large knob of butter l 2 medium leeks, trimmed l 5 thick slices white bread l 1 x 120g pack mixed nuts and dried fruit l 1 small bunch fresh thyme, finely chopped l 1 large unwaxed lemon, finely grated zest only l 450g/1lb pork sausagemeat l salt and freshly ground black pepper For the roast potatoes l 1.2kg/2lb 12oz potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks l 4 tbsp sunflower oil or melted goose fat For the pigs in blankets l 8–12 chipolata sausages, wrapped in bacon l a few sprigs fresh rosemary (optional) l 2 tbsp honey For the hassle-free Christmas gravy l 750–900ml/1⅓–1⅔ pint readymade chicken gravy l 2 rashers smoked streaky or back bacon, roughly chopped l 4 tbsp ruby port or red wine

l2

tbsp cranberry sauce For the microwave glazed carrots l 600g/1lb 5oz ready-prepared carrot sticks l 2 tbsp orange juice (fresh or from a carton) l knob of butter l 2 tbsp chopped frozen parsley or 3 tbsp freshly chopped parsley l 2 good pinches caster sugar For the one-pot sprouts with bacon and chestnuts l 25g/1oz butter l 4 rashers rindless smoked streaky bacon, cut into 2cm/¾in pieces l 300g/10½oz ready-trimmed baby Brussels sprouts, halved l 200g/7oz cooked and peeled chestnuts, vacuum-packed or frozen and thawed, halved l sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method 1 Preheat the oven to 220C/200C Fan/ Gas 7. 2 For the turkey and stuffing, put the turkey crown on a lightly oiled baking tray. Season with coarsely ground black pepper. Cover breast with bacon rashers, then cover with foil and roast for 1 hour. 3 While the turkey is roasting, prepare the stuffing. Melt the butter. Thinly slice the leeks. Add to the pan and cook over low heat for 3-4 minutes. 4 Tip the leeks into a large, shallow ovenproof dish. Tear the bread into small cubes. Tip the nuts and fruit onto a board, then add to the bread and leeks. Add roughly three-quarters of the thyme and sprinkle lemon zest on top. Add sausagemeat and season

with a salt and black pepper. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly, spread loosely and set aside. 5 After 1 hour, take the turkey out of the oven and reduce temperature to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 7. Take the turkey crown off the tray and place on top of the stuffing. Place in the oven and roast for 30 minutes, then remove foil and cook for a further 15 minutes. 6 Meanwhile, put the potatoes in a large saucepan and cover with cold water. Place over a high heat and bring to the boil. Drain in a large colander and return to the saucepan. 7 Pour the oil over and toss together well. Scatter onto a baking tray and roast for an hour. 8 Meanwhile, for the pigs in blankets, place on a lightly oiled baking tray with the potatoes and drizzle with honey. Roast for 15–20 minutes. 9 Remove turkey from the oven, cover with kitchen foil and leave for 15 minutes. 10 Put the carrots in a microwave-proof serving dish and pour over the orange juice, dot with butter, add sugar and season with salt and black pepper. Cover with cling film and cook on HIGH for 8 minutes. 11 For the sprouts, put the butter, bacon, sprouts and chestnuts in a large non-stick saucepan and season well with black pepper. Add 200ml/7fl oz water and bring to the boil. Cook for about 5 minutes, until the liquid has evaporated. 12 Meanwhile, put the gravy, bacon, port and cranberry sauce in a medium saucepan and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat and cook gently for 5 minutes. Season with black pepper and salt. Keep warm until ready to serve.

Eight of the cosiest Winter lidays 2019 Ho getaways W

inter can be bleak. The days are short, the evenings are dark and the rain often lashes down. There’s no better way to get through January and February than with a cosy weekend away in the countryside - whether it’s a boutique hotel not too far from London or a foodie break further afield. From new lakeshore hotels to country house getaways, these are some of britain’s best staycation venues.

Another Place, The Lake District After UNESCO awarded it World Heritage status in 2017 a gamechanging boutique hotel opened near Ullswater in August. Another Place, The Lake, is set within 18 acres of lakeside landscape, with 40 stylish bedrooms and lots of contemporary

features – most notably, the swimming pool with floor to ceiling glass windows. Guests can hike, swim, paddle board and sail, too. Rooms from £160 / night; another.place

Pool House, Inverness This family-owned boutique retreat will suit anyone looking to fulfill their Scottish Highlands dream. Fly into Inverness (or take the sleeper train) and then it’s an hour and a half’s drive to Gairloch, the hotel’s stunning loch-side location. You can go whisky tasting, eat fantastic seafood, hike around the Highlands or just cosy up in the hotel. For a real treat ask for Campania, a suite bigger than most London flats with its own fireplace and outdoor decking. Rooms from £225 / night; mrandmrssmith.com

The Scarlet, Cornwall This is a luxury eco hotel for just for grown-ups on the North Cornish Coast with views over Mawgan Porth Beach

- in other words, the dream. Rooms have vast glass windows allowing you to drink in the magnificent views of the cliffs, sea and sky from the moment you wake up. The spa is one of the main attractions - you can slather yourself in a mud treatment or stargaze from one of the cliff top hot tubs. Its Relaxation Room even has cocoon-like hanging pods for the ultimate nap. Rooms from £330; scarlethotel.co.uk

Moat Cottage, Suffolk Part of the Wilderness Reserve near Southwold in Suffolk, Moat Cottage is possibly the most Instagrammable of the bunch: the entire Tudor farmhouse is painted in a bold millennial pink. As well as six bedrooms (with Hypnos beds), roll-top baths and a contemporary open-plan living space, it has a hot tub perched over the moat for autumn frolics. There are Pashley bicycles for exploring the area. From £995 per night; wildernessreserve.com

Beaverbrook, Surrey Beaverbrook will make you re-think the country house hotel. After a £90 million makeover, this new property in Surrey comes complete with Hollywood-worthy interiors - bedrooms are named after illustrious guests such as Ian Fleming - and a chic Japanese restaurant.

Rooms from £280 per night; beaverbrook.co.uk.

Thyme Hotel, Cotswolds A trip to the Cotswolds is always a good idea, especially when Thyme hotel is your destination. During your stay, relax in the meadow spa, take a cooking lesson at their cookery school or pull up a chair at their village pub - all will make for a quintessential English countryside escape. Rooms from £300 per night; thyme. co.uk/

The Scarlet, Cornwall

The Pig at Combe, Devon

Skye Window House, Scotland

The Pig near Honiton needs to be on your hitlist. The house is an Elizabethan masterpiece that sits snugly in the Otter Valley, just 8 miles from the sea if you fancy a blast of salty air and a bracing swim. Two potting sheds have become treatment rooms, if cosying in one of the luxe bedrooms, or sipping on cocktails in the bar gets all too much. As ever at The Pigs, food is taken very seriously with everything sourced from a 25-mile radius, including its three walled gardens.

You can enjoy the beautifully remote Isle of Skye from this Scandi-style three bedroom house. It has floor-toceiling windows (hence the name) with knock-out views of Mount Bay and the Sound of Sleat, which means you can be mesmerised by the sunset without leaving your chair and the warmth of the fire. The master bedroom has its own sun terrace too, where you can snuggle up in blankets to drink in the magnificent landscape. As this beautiful spot is very secluded, it’s wise to rent a car for this one.

Top ten tips to prepare your garden for winter a garden fork before a sandy top dressing is added to improve soil structure and drainage. The emphasis in autumn is to provide nutrients for strong root development so choosing a specialist autumn feed is essential.

As the days get shorter and the temperature drops, it’s important to prepare your garden for the winter months and all that the season has to throw at it. Here are some of our top tips.

1. Rake up fallen leaves to prevent slippery paths Once you’ve raked up your leaves, don’t throw them away. Leaf matter can be composted before being used back on your borders. You can put out hessian sacks and rakes so that visitors can help collect them.

2. Cover tender, newly planted woodland plants with fleece or enviromesh Create a wigwam out of canes and tie on the material, embedding the bottom in the soil to anchor it down. This keeps the rooting zone drier than if left uncovered and it is this which greatly influences these young plants’ chances of survival. In mild weather, when you remember, lift up the covers periodically and check the rooting zone is not too dry. If it is, water the plants and re-cover.

Gardens 3. Wrap up any pots which contain shrubs as their roots are at risk of cold damage Protect any shrubs growing in containers from winter frost by wrapping the pots in bubble wrap. For appearance’s sake, and to give a double insulation layer, you can cover this with hessian sacking. As well as protecting the roots, it will also help prevent the pots from cracking.

4. Leave some herbaceous perennials to create a winter habitat for your garden’s wildlife Instead of cutting back all of your herbaceous perennials, leave a selection as a winter habitat for insects, such as ladybirds. You can, however, cut back any tall herbaceous plants to stop wind rock.

5. Prune your roses In November, cut back stems by a third to prevent wind rock over the winter, then in January or February they are winter pruned. This involves cutting back the plant to about half to create an even, rounded shape, and removing any dead, damaged or diseased stems.

6. Look after your lawns Start by removing thatch and moss using a motored scarifier, although a springbok rake is equally as effective for a small lawn. The lawn is then aerated which can be done using

16

7. Look after your garden’s wildlife It’s important to feed the birds as they need all the help they can get from us over winter. Leave out feeders and water baths (break the ice on ponds and water features if temperatures get down to freezing, so they can get a drink). If you’re having garden fires over winter make sure there are no hedgehogs or other hibernating creatures nesting in there. A healthy garden ecosystem also needs insects, which enrich the soil and pollinate plants, so why not make a bug hotel where they can make their winter home.

8. Treat your garden furniture Clean, repair, sand down and treat about a third of our garden furniture each year with a good quality wood preservative. Once you’ve cleaned them up it’s a good idea to make sure you store them undercover over the winter months.

9. Take stock of your garden A simple task that many of us wouldn’t think to do is to grab a notebook and walk around the garden. It’s the ideal time of year to reflect on what didn’t work as well as expected throughout the year and any new ideas you might have for the garden.

10. Protect outside taps from frosty weather If you have outside taps which can be isolated from a stop tap, turn off the stop tap and drain the tap. This will prevent burst pipes and a damaged tap in frosty weather. If you’re not able to isolate the taps, simply insulate exposed pipes and cover the tap with a tap cover.

Health

How to get a good night’s sleep

W

hether you’re a full eight hours person or can get by on a mean lean four, quality sleep time is the key to a productive and happy day. We spend about a third of our lives asleep. Up to one third of the population suffers from insomnia, with common mental health problems such as stress, anxiety and depression often underpinning sleep problems, and likewise, poor sleep often leading to poor mental health.’ So put a spring in your step with our top tips for restful snoozing. Read on to discover how to sleep better.

Invest in blackout blinds Black-out blinds or curtains will limit light at night time. This is crucial, as

light interferes with melatonin production. Melatonin, incidentally, is the hormone that encourages us to go to sleep.

Put away your phone It’s useful to avoid looking at phones/ screens/TVs for at least half an hour before you’re due for some shut eye. Try to avoid having electronic devices in the bedroom, full stop - or use a blue-light filtering app or mode.’ Again, this is because that blue light will stop your body from producing melatonin, the hormone that induces sleep.

Stick to a routine This one might be easier said than done, but try your best to stick to a similar bedtime routine - this means going to bed at the same time each evening and getting up at the same time each morning. Try to keep to a similar wind-down routine before you go to sleep so your body and mind knows when its time for shut eye.

Get the right amount of sleep You need to know how much sleep you need to feel good. It’s likely to be seven to eight hours, but it could be as little as four. Try keeping a sleep diary or tracking your sleep with a wearable device (ideally not your phone). If you have a good idea of how much sleep you need to feel good and what affects your sleep, you can make sure you establish good habits, or pinpoint issues.

Watch what and when you eat and drink As a rule, eating less than two hours before bed means that food hasn’t had time to digest before we try

and sleep. This can lead to discomfort and indigestion. Fatty or spicy foods can take longer to process and stimulants like caffeine or sugar can give us a boost of energy when we want to be winding down. Rice, oats and dairy products can encourage us to feel sleepy.

Avoid alcohol We like to think that alcohol makes us sleep better. It may help us nod off, but the quality of the sleep you get may be poor, and dehydration or a late-night takeaway can further impair our sleep.

Don’t exercise in the evening Exercise is great for mental health and regular light exercise is a good way to improve sleep. Exercise floods the body with feel-good hormones that stimulate our minds and bodies, so beware of exercising late at night as it can actually keep us awake.

Don’t take a nap Sometimes it’s easy to give in to sleep on the train or bus home after a busy day. And a short nap can gee you up. But that’s just it …they have literally stolen some of your sleep ‘fuel’. If you nod off, even for a short time, you can short circuit the natural hormone surges that set us up for our main sleep. Therefore you need to regain it again if you still expect to sleep a solid 8 hours of quality sleep.

Find ways to address anxiety and worry Health is one of our biggest worries. If you lie awake mulling over concerns about your health, or the health of a loved one, you could try meditation or a mindfulness technique to help settle your internal worries. They won’t necessarily make you sleep instantly, but they will help you avoid stress, and therefore prevent sleep problems in the future.

Fitness How to get fit on a budget W ant to get in shape? Don’t worry - it doesn’t have to cost you half your month’s wages. Despite what all of the ads are telling you, you don’t need deluxe yoga mats or pricey protein powders in order to get physically fit. Here are some effective tips for getting fit on a budget:

Get outdoors Spent one too many nights or weekends on your couch bingewatching your favorite TV show? By exercising outside, you can get some fresh air and learn how to get fit on a budget at the same time. Walking and running outdoors are free and a good way to get into aerobic shape. Other tips include running up and down stairs, chopping wood or, if you’re in for the extreme, hit an old tyre with a sledge hammer - anything that gets your heart rate up and works your muscles.

Use the internet Dreams of a six-pack? You don’t need to shell out for a fancy contraption you saw advertised on TV, promising you a washboard stomach by yesterday. YouTube and Pinterest provide some really valuable tools for getting in shape. Just type in the type of workout you want and the time you have

available to work out, such as ’30 minute barre workout,’ and you have your choice of hundreds of workouts.

Visit your library

If you can’t find the fitness resources you want online without forking over some cash - maybe you have to pay to download your preferred exercise programmes, for example - consider looking on the shelves at your public library. A great trick for how to get fit on a budget is to check out videos and books from your trusty local library at no cost. You can also check out a handful of health cookbooks to gather nutritious recipes. If you’re interested in learning more about anatomy or a particular method of exercise, such as Pilates, you can check out books about that too.

Create a home gym You might not think that creating a home gym belongs on a list of tips for getting fit on a budget, and you may be right if the home gym is equipped with expensive dumbbells and a brand new treadmill. But there is a way to get fit on a budget and get top-of-theline workouts without all of that pricey equipment. You can put together a good fitness programme with some inexpensive resistance bands and a jump rope, especially when combined with body weight exercises. You can also fill

bottles of different sizes with water and use them like dumbbells or kettlebells.

Look great for less It’s true that exercising requires the proper gear. Whether your focus is going to be on running, yoga or biking, it’s important to wear clothing suited to your task - think stretchy materials or protective gear like helmets. While athletic wear can be costly, it doesn’t have to be. Head straight to the clearance shelf at your local store. You can also find really great workout clothes at cheap prices in stores such as T.J. Maxx. Another good tip is to stay clear of well-known brand names. For the gym, just wear a simple t-shirt and shorts.

Don’t give up Despite the fact that fitness can sometimes be expensive and trying to figure out how to get fit on a budget may seem tricky, it doesn’t have to be and it shouldn’t keep you from getting in shape. Being in shape is priceless, but it does not have to be expensive. With some ingenuity, creativity and drive you can get there on a budget and then maybe even have some money left over to enjoy being in shape on holiday. If you want to get fit, don’t let anything stop you, especially not money. You don’t need anything other than your own body to get in shape.

Why solar power makes sense Solar Panels - we’ve all seen them adorning the roofs of homes and industrial premises. People often ask themselves ‘Why is solar energy good?’ and, as a result, fail to realise the importance of solar technology. Solar power has evidently become the trend in renewable energy. Homeowners around the UK installed solar panels on their roof, managing accordingly to reap all the solar energy advantages. Apart from the obvious financial benefits, there are other pertinent reasons why you should convert to using solar power instead of fossil fuels. What other reasons should you consider when going solar? Here are two compelling reasons. 1. Solar Power Is Good for the Environment The most commonly known fact about solar energy is that it represents a clean, green source of energy. Solar

power is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. There’s nothing about solar power that pollutes mother nature. Solar power doesn’t release any greenhouse gasses, and except for needing a source of clean water to function, it uses absolutely no other resources. Hence, it’s safe and environmentally-friendly. Yet, people are still in doubt why solar energy is good. Solar power is self-sufficient and installing solar panels on your roof is a safe and easy path to contribute to a sustainable future. Starting on your home is a great way to show you care about the environment.

2. Solar Electricity Makes Your Home Go Off-the-Grid The decrease in the cost of solar panels serves as a great example of why there should be an increase in the use of solar energy. Traditional electricity relies heavily on fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas. Not only are they bad for the environment, but they are also limited resources. This translates into a volatile market, in which energy prices alter throughout the day. Solar electricity boosts your electricity independence! By investing in a 4kW solar system, which is the most common domestic size, you can easily protect yourself against unpredictable increases in utility prices, and enjoy cheap electricitythroughout the entire day - the sun will never increase its rates and it gives you energy security. Once you have solar panels up on your roof, you’ve technically reached an energy-independent status. Solar battery storage systems can also help store electricity for nighttime and rainy days.

TRJ Electric & PV Solar are the only Qualified MCS Approved PV Solar installer in the Skegness Area. All PV Solar Systems that we install are covered by an insurance backed warranty. Pets

How to train your kitten or cat Part two Last time out, we showed you the basics of how to train your kitten or cat. Now we move onto how to teach them specific tasks. Let the fun begin!

Teaching your cat to recognise their name Naming your cat is a really exciting experience for all the family, so once you’ve chosen a name that you’re all happy with, you will want to say it as much as possible! This is great news for your cat, as the more you use their name, the more quickly they will learn that it belongs to them. Say your kitten or cat’s name repeatedly during enjoyable experiences, such as when they are eating or when you pet or play with them. If your cat has been naughty, never shout their name. This will make your cat associate their name with negativity, so they might not come running as fast as you’d like when you next call them. This is especially important for outdoor cats.

Toilet training your cat Although a cat’s natural instincts naturally lead them to go to the toilet outside, they can easily adapt to use a litter tray, especially if taught from a young age. Older cats may also find a litter tray useful, even if they haven’t used one before, as their joints start to get stiff and they don’t have the same energy to get outside. There are several stages to follow to help your cat learn how to use a litter tray.

How to spot when nature calls Some kittens may be litter-trained by the time you take them home, but if not, you can show them the ropes. To litter train your kitten, try gently placing them in the tray after they eat, when they wake up and if you see

them sniffing, scratching or crouching on the floor – this can be a sign that they’re ready to go! Cat toilet training can sometimes take a little time, so be patient and stick with it.

Teaching your cat to use a scratching post A vital part of training kittens is showing them when and where they should scratch, so that your sofa doesn’t suffer! A scratching post can be a good surface for any urges your cat may have, but you may need to show them how to use it. Start but showing your kitten or cat the post, and dangling a toy along/around it to encourage them to play – when their claws hit the post, they should soon get the idea. You can also try gently lifting your pet’s front paws and make downward, scratching motions on the post. This should show them how to use a scratch post, and they should try it for themselves soon. Adding a little catnip on the post can also help to

make it more attractive for your pet to approach! When your cat uses the post, praise them with lots of encouragement. The scent left on the post from your cat’s previous scratching should also attract them back to the post in future.

Encouraging your cat to cuddle Like young children, kittens are filled with curiosity, excitement and energy! This means that they might not want to stay still in one place, or they might get restless when you cuddle them, no matter how much they adore you. The same is for older cats that you have perhaps rescued, as they are getting used to new surroundings and a new family before falling asleep on your lap. Give your cat time to grow or adjust, and don’t force them to stay still or be picked up if they don’t want to be. With a little time, understanding and compromise, your cat will soon be as keen to cuddle as you are!

Factory work: The Main Cause of Noise Induced Hearing Loss By Sam Sleight

Did you know that 8 out of 10 people in the Manufacturing Industry alone have Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)? Working conditions and environments which consist of noisy machinery, such as Manufacturing, Carpentry, Joinery and Building, can often cause serious health issues to arise in workers. NIHL is one of the most common work-related illnesses, with over 23,000 workers in the UK suffering from this condition. When someone develops NIHL they may experience difficulties in sound related activities such as having conversations. The condition can also cause ringing in the ears, which is a further medical condition known as Tinnitus. It is not uncommon for such health issues to affect everyday life and the ability to work, which brings financial consequences. The recommended noise limit should not exceed 85 decibels (dB). Working with machinery such as CNC Routers, Spindle Moulding Machines and Thicknessers can create noise levels of up to 105dB. This significant level of noise can cause serious damage in just 1 hour of exposure. Whilst at first, the noise may not appear to be a problem, as time progresses, it is likely that your hearing will gradually deteriorate. In cases of NIHL, the affects may take many years to become apparent, therefore, those suffering may not be aware that their hearing has been damaged for some time after exposure occurred. Workers who develop NIHL have usually not been given the correct protective equipment or health and safety training from their employers to help prevent the illness from developing. NIHL is very preventable, however, once hearing is lost, it cannot be restored without the help of equipment such as hearing aids. Health and safety should be taken seriously by employers as they have a professional duty to protect their employees from harm. Regulations state that employers are required to provide employees with protective equipment and the appropriate training for working environments where the noise levels exceed 85dB. In such cases your employer is also required to monitor for hearing damage. If your employer did not take the appropriate steps to protect your hearing by failing to put basic health and safety training in place, failing to provide the correct protective equipment, or failing to provide sufficient training on how to use such equipment, you may have a claim for NIHL. If your employer no longer exists, your Solicitor can still pursue your compensation claim via the insurance company that insured your employer at that time. If you are unsure whether your hearing loss was caused through work, we recommend that you contact our Solicitors for a free assessment. Due to strict time limits we urge that you contact our Solicitors as soon as you discover that your hearing loss may be the result of your employment. Our Team of Industrial Disease Specialists will assist you with your claim on a no win no fee basis and help you to obtain compensation to aid your pain, suffering and financial losses. To get in touch call Hodgkinsons Solicitors on 01754 897150.

Six of the best new cars for 2020

F

rom high-performance estates to all-electric city runarounds, we take a look at six of the best new cars due to arrive in 2020.

Audi RS 6 Avant Price: From £85,000 (est) On sale: Early 2020 The next generation of Audi’s flagship high-performance estate has arrived in the shape of the new RS 6 Avant, which combines 190mph potential with fuel-saving technology. The RS 6 has a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine at its heart, delivering 592bhp and 800Nm of torque, but also offers mildhybrid tech and cylinder deactivation to boost fuel economy.

Italian icon turns all-electric and moves further upmarket. Our exclusive image shows how the next-generation car will stay faithful to the much-loved retro design but, under-neath, the new model will abandon com-bustion engines and be redesigned to accommodate EV powertrains. The 500 is likely toshare its architecture with the next-generation Panda, with both riding on an all-new platform designed specifically for electrification.

A variety of electric powertrains may be offered, with a range of up to 300 miles for the most expensive version.

Dramatic exterior changes include a body that is 40mm wider than the previous model’s, with flared wheelarches covering 21-inch alloys, while standard models are fitted with air suspension. Opt for the Dynamic Package Plus and you get steel springs, adjustable dampers and four-wheel steering, while the limited top speed rises from the standard 155mph to a supercarrivalling 190mph.

Fiat 500 Electric Price: From £25,000 (est) On sale: Summer 2020 A bold reinvention is scheduled for the Fiat 500 in 2020, as the diminutive

Honda Jazz Price: £16,000 (est) On sale: Spring 2020 Honda is raising its supermini game in 2020 with the introduction of the fourth-generation Jazz, which is set to take on a tough new look. This exclusive Auto Express image shows how the new car will have a mini-SUV style, taking some influences from its CR-V sibling. The new Jazz’s SUV flavour comes thanks to a bolder grille with larger headlights, roof rails and darkcoloured trim low down on the body. Underneath, meanwhile, the Jazz will

ride on a new platform designed specifically to accept alternative powertrains; the new model will be hybrid-only, using a multi-mode system similar to that seen on the CR-V. Inside, early glimpses have revealed a large infotainment screen sitting proud of the dashboard - a significant leap forward.

Peugeot 2008 Price: From £19,000 (est) On sale: Early 2020 Peugeot’s popular 2008 crossover has been given a fresh new look inspired by its 3008 sibling, with some new hardware underneath to keep pace with an increased number of competitors. Riding on the latest CMP small-car platform means the new 2008 will be available with petrol, diesel and all-electric powertrains, regardless of trim level. Peugeot claims the pure-electric e-2008 will be able to cover 193 miles on a single charge. The switch to this platform also allows the 2008 to grow in size. Its wheelbase has increased by 60mm and the new car itself is 140mm longer. This contributes not only to increased passenger space in the cabin, but also to a boot that can carry an extra 10 litres of luggage.

Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet Price: From £25,000 (est) On sale: Spring 2020 Volkswagen is plugging a significant gap in its model range with the introduction of this: the new T-Roc Cabriolet. Taking over from the Beetle Cabriolet that went off sale at the beginning of this year, the T-Roc is something of a rarity, with only the Range Rover Evoque Convertible also offering SUV looks with a folding roof. Switching to an electrically folding fabric hood means the T-Roc Convertible comes in two-door format only, while the absence of a B-pillar gives the new model a clean look. The roof can be raised or lowered in just nine seconds, although the mechanism means the drop-top T-Roc is a strict four-seater. UK buyers can choose from Design or R-Line trims, as well as 1.0-litre three-cylinder or 1.5-litre fourcylinder turbocharged petrol engines.

Ford Puma Price: From £20,000 (est) On sale: Early 2020 Ford’s SUV range is growing thanks to the introduction of this, the compact Puma, designed to sit between the EcoSport and Kuga in the firm’s range. Although the new Puma shares its platform with the current Fiesta, it has a wheelbase 95mm longer than the supermini’s, as well as a body that is taller, longer and wider to increase passenger space. Inside, the Puma mixes Fiesta switchgear with some bespoke elements such as a digital instrument panel and zip-off seat covers, while boot capacity is a generous 456 litres. The new car will use Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost engines, with mild-hybrid and diesel versions of the model arriving later in the year.

Heading your way in the new year: (from left to right) Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet; Audi RS 6 Avant; Fiat 500 Electric; Honda Jazz: Ford Puma.

Films

The pick of the new movies

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker The third installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, following The Force Awakens (2015) and The Last Jedi (2017), and the final episode of the nine-part Skywalker saga, 'The Rise of Skywalker' will see the Resistance face the First Order once more, and the end of the ancient conflict between the Jedi and the Sith. The film features a previously-filmed appearance by the late Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia.

Aries

Horoscopes

(March 21 - April 19)

The Aries Horoscope indicates that you could be faced with some misunderstandings which could cause you sleepless nights. At work, you might feel unsettled. In your relationships, you could feel that the flow of communication is not forthcoming.

Taurus

(April 20 - May 20)

Relationships will be uppermost in your mind. A younger person in the family may need your help and support. It is possible that you may have to make some important financial decisions which will require a step-by-step approach involving detailed planning and considerable forethought.

Gemini

(May 21 - June 20)

This is an extremely happy Horoscope time and you will enjoy being with your loved ones, family and friends. You will have a very busy social life with lots of engagements. For those in established partnerships, there will be intense intimacy and special shared moments.

Cancer

(June 21 - July 22)

Watch out for health issues, your Horoscope interpretation suggests. Don’t ignore any pain related to your shoulder, liver/kidneys or intestines. If you suffer pain or discomfort in any of these areas, don’t suffer in silence or be afraid to consult a doctor.

Leo

(July 23 - August 22)

You may need to use your diplomatic skills in family matters, your Leo indicators tell you. There could be some issues which can only be sorted out by opening up the channels of communication. As a result, you may not like what you hear.

Virgo

(August 23 - September 22)

You may overspend in this period without realising it. It could be an expensive splurge which you will regret in the cold light of day. Your love-life may seem erratic if you are single. If you are in a partnership, you may fall out over a minor issue that causes hurtful words or arguments.

Libra (September 23 - October 22) Watch your finances - you may well have to tighten your belt. There could be an unexpected bill that needs immediate payment, making you shudder because you will feel as though you have been ripped off. You may feel wary of spending money and you will be very careful, checking and double-checking invoices.

Scorpio

(October 23 - November 21)

Try not to make any foolhardy financial decisions. You might be attracted to an investment proposition, but be sure to do your research before you sign anything. Think twice before you part with any of your hardearned cash. The Horoscope for Scorpio warns that extreme caution is needed.

Sagittarius

(November 22 - December 21)

You are likely to be tuned into your inner self and personal aspirations. If you are spiritually inclined, this period could be very significant for you. You will have a sense of knowingness and you will trust your intuition.

Capricorn

(December 22 - January 19)

You may feel down in the mouth at the start of this period, but by the end of it you will be smiling again because there will be good news on the job front. It could be a promotion or a raise in salary, but whatever it is there will be cause to celebrate and enjoy the moment.

Aquarius

(January 20 - February 18)

You will be engaged in some sort of charity work that allows you to help others through a hobby, the arts or a group situation where you will prove to be a good role model. People will rally to the cause and you will do a lot of useful work for which you will receive considerable public recognition.

Pisces

(February 19 - March 20)

There could be some fretful times at work for Pisceans, though there’s nothing that you won’t be able to take in your stride. You’ll have a little more money to play with, but take care not to buy things you don’t really need or want. Try to learn from past mistakes and, if possible, save more than you spend.
