Eight awe-inspiring 9 1 0 2 s y a d Holi USA road trips

T

he mythology of the American highway is as deep and long as the Grand Canyon - which you can, incidentally, drive along. Books, music and films have added glamour, ghosts and grit to what in other countries would be merely a long, even boring, drive.

The ideal American driving holiday will involve at least some quieter state routes and back roads. Those with time to spare can try one of the long-distance epics, but even if you have only a week or less you can do some very photogenic shorter routes.

The following are our favourites - though tweaking them and inventing your own routes is all part of the fun.

California State Route 1 The route along the Pacific coast between Dana Point, north of San Diego, and Leggett, in the heart of northern California’s redwood country, is an easy but exciting introduction to American road culture. Do the drive in summer and you’ll be sun-blessed all the way; in winter, do it north to south and chase the light and heat.

Though the road skirts Greater Los Angeles and its legendary gridlocks, it does pass through Long Beach, Santa Monica, Malibu, Santa Barbara’s wine country, Santa Cruz, Big Sur, San Francisco and the Point Reyes National Seashore. Route 101, with which Route 1 occasionally merges on its 745-mile coast-hugging journey, finally takes over completely near Leggett.

According to legend, the great blues guitarist Robert Johnson met the devil at the crossroads of Highways 61 and 49.

Route 66

Crossing Route 20, this runs from Oregon to Atlantic City, New Jersey, and incorporates large sections of the Lincoln Highway - a sort of national “Main Street” that passes the National Automobile Museum in Reno, Nevada, Lincoln’s cabin in Illinois, and the Big Mac Museum and giant Coffee Pot in Pennsylvania. The southernmost route is Interstate 10, from Santa Monica to Jacksonville, Florida.

One highway that ends in California is the most famous of all - Route 66.

Before its creation in 1926, American roads were recognised by coloured bands on telegraph poles and were often maintained by private individuals.

Originally stretching 2,451 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica, some stretches remain open, most notably the 320-mile south-western Arizona section from the Petrified Forest to Kingman, via Winslow and Flagstaff - stay en route at the atmospheric La Posada hotel, where the 66 meets the equally celebrated Santa Fe railroad.

Highway 61 Highway 61, officially US Route 61, connects New Orleans and the city of Wyoming in Minnesota, and runs clean south-north for 1,400 miles. It’s often nicknamed the “Blues Highway” in recognition of the region’s musical

Monument Valley Use Route 17 out of Phoenix, visit Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon and then head up the 160 to the cowboy film-scape of buttes and tabletops on the Arizona/Utah border. Then come down the 191 and across Interstate 40 to enter Winslow on Route 66.

Combine with a Jeep drive along Diamond Creek Road, which goes along the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

Florida Keys The 150-mile US 1 from Miami to Key West skirts the Everglades and takes the “Ocean Highway” linking a series of keys (from Spanish cayo for “islet”), with the Gulf of Mexico on the right and the Atlantic on the left; the most spectacular section is the Seven Mile Bridge.

US Route 20 For those who want to live out an ‘On the Road’ fantasy and travel coast to coast, there are several options.

US Route 20, the longest road in the country, runs for 3,365 miles between Newport in Oregon and Boston, but is broken at Yellowstone National Park.

Running parallel to the north is the 3,101-mile Interstate 90. To the south is Route 6, at 3,205 miles the longest continuous route. All these are fast, easy to drive and useful for those aiming to cross the US in two or three weeks without overdoing the driving.

Legendary landscapes: The Grand Canyon.

Blue Ridge Parkway For a leaf-themed drive, choose between the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway (blueridgeparkway.org) in southern Appalachia and the 138-mile Scenic Route 100 Byway along the edge of Vermont’s Green Mountains.

How to book it...

Who doesn’t dream of hitting the highway in a classic car? Ride Free (ridefree.com/classic_car_tours_ rentals) offers guided tours (in Sixties Mustang convertibles or a vintage 1932 Ford Roadster) along Route 66, California’s Route 1 or from LA to Vegas, as well as guided and selfguided motorcycle tours across the US. The company also rents cars to people who want to drive alone - prices on request.

If you prefer to book through a British-based firm, see the American Road Trip Company

(theamericanroadtripcompany.co.uk), Bon Voyage (bon-voyage.co.uk) or Just America ( justamerica.co.uk). All offer Route 66 as well as shorter drives across the US. All the usual suspects rent cars in the US, and websites such as kayak. co.uk and vroomvroomvroom.com are handy for comparing deals. Rates vary greatly depending on the season, model and pick-up point; circular drives are always cheaper than “oneway” routes involving a (sometimes exorbitant) drop-off fee. Driveaways driving someone else’s car from A to B and paying for the fuel - are an option: visit the main website autodriveaway. com for a quote.

You might even get lucky and be asked to take a vintage sports car from Arizona to Niagara Falls.

If you want to avoid the hassle of planning hotels and motels, a motorhome or RV is an option; Cruise America (cruiseamerica.com) is the market leader.

Prepare your lawn for summer in five easy steps As summer approaches we can look forward to longer, hotter days filled with sunshine and warmth. Whilst this change in the weather is an improvement for ourselves, the changing conditions can wreak havoc on your lawn, resulting in sparse, unhealthy and patchy grass.

Follow these 5 easy steps to prepare your lawn for summer so that it remains green and luscious whatever the weather.

Step 1: Dust off the lawnmower Whilst the wet and frosty weather over winter is a great excuse to skip the mowing, as the sun dries up the ground it’s time to awaken the mower from its hibernation and prepare your lawn for summer. For a pristine lawn it’s ideal to trim grass once a week in spring and twice a week in summer, this will keep your lawn tidy, clear of pests and clutter-free.

Regular low level maintenance is the key to maintaining an attractive lawn throughout the summer and the best way to avoid requiring any timeconsuming overhauls when things get out of control.

Step 2: Remove moss & weeds Moss thrives in wet, shaded conditions which makes spring the perfect time for clearing moss infestations

Gardening through scarification (vigorous raking) and chemical treatments. Long sunny days provide excellent conditions for blooming summer bulbs, but those extra rays also benefit pesky weed infestations so during late spring it’s vital you keep on top of these invaders to avoid spread.

Step 3: Be generous with feed During spring and summer your lawn is actively growing and so requires feeding, so when you prepare your lawn for summer try using a proprietary spring or summer fertiliser to encourage vigour and reduce the growth of moss and weeds.

Step 4: Over-seed to patch up gaps Poor drainage can cause lawns to become patchy and sparse over the winter months and if you’ve removed a large amount of moss and weeds it’s likely there’ll be a few gaps in need

of filling in. To patch up these areas simply break up the bare surface soil and then rake to make a reasonably even surface before sowing the seeds, then lightly rake to incorporate the seeds into the surface. If the weather remains reasonably dry 2-3 days after sowing then water gently with a sprinkler and the grass should appear after around 10 days.

Step 5: Water responsibly In the UK we are blessed with frequent rainfall meaning watering lawns is rarely necessary. Even those lawns which turn brown and dry during the hotter months can quickly recover after the first rainfall. However if you want to prepare your lawn for summer so that the grass remains green and luscious all year round then some maintenance can be required. Generally speaking, watering every 7-10 days should be sufficient during the hotter months, only watering your lawn once the ground has become dry but before the grass turn yellow. If the ground is hard you can aerate it by spiking it with a garden fork before watering.

With these five simple tips you can prepare your lawn for summer so that even with just a small amount of regular maintenance it will remain healthy and vibrant even on the hottest of days.

Health Can vaping help kick the smoking habit?

I

f you’ve thought about trying to kick a smoking habit, you’re not alone. Nearly seven out of 10 smokers say they want to stop. Kicking the habit is one of the best things you can do for your health - smoking harms nearly every organ in your body, including your heart. Nearly onethird of deaths from heart disease are the result of smoking and secondhand smoke.

You might be tempted to turn to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) as a way to ease the transition from traditional cigarettes to not smoking at all. But is smoking e-cigarettes (also called vaping) better for you than using tobacco products? Can e-cigarettes help you to stop smoking once and for all? Read on...

Vaping is less harmful than traditional smoking E-cigarettes heat nicotine (extracted from tobacco), flavorings and other chemicals to create a water vapor that you inhale. Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7,000 chemicals, many of which are toxic. While we don’t know exactly what chemicals are in e-cigarettes, there’s almost no doubt that they expose you to fewer toxic chemicals than traditional cigarettes.

Vaping is still bad for your health Nicotine is the primary agent in both regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes, and it is highly addictive. It causes you to crave a smoke and suffer withdrawal symptoms if you ignore the craving.

Nicotine is also a toxic substance. It raises your blood pressure and spikes your adrenaline, which increases your heart rate and the likelihood of having a heart attack.

There are many unknowns about vaping, including what chemicals make up the vapor and how they affect physical health over the long term.

E-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health, exposing you to all

kinds of chemicals that we don’t yet understand and that are probably not safe.

E-cigarettes are just as addictive as traditional ones Both e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes contain nicotine, which research suggests may be as addictive as heroin and cocaine. What’s worse, many e-cigarette users get even more nicotine than they would from a tobacco product - you can buy extra-strength cartridges, which have a higher concentration of nicotine, or you can increase the e-cigarette’s voltage to get a greater hit of the substance.

E-cigarettes aren’t the best smoking cessation tool Although they’ve been marketed as an aid to help you quit smoking, e-cigarettes have not received Food and Drug Administration approval as smoking cessation devices. A recent study found that most people who intended to use e-cigarettes to kick the nicotine habit ended up continuing to smoke both traditional and e-cigarettes.

A new generation is getting hooked on nicotine Among youth, e-cigarettes are more popular than any traditional tobacco product. A 2015 study reported that e-cigarette use among young people had increased by 900 percent, and that 40 percent of young e-cigarette users had never smoked regular tobacco.

There are three reasons e-cigarettes may be particularly enticing to young people. First, many teens believe that vaping is less harmful than smoking.

Secondly, e-cigarettes have a lower per-use cost than traditional cigarettes.

Finally, vape cartridges are often formulated with flavorings such as apple pie and watermelon that appeal to younger users.

What is most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would’ve never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit. It’s one thing if you convert from cigarette smoking to vaping. It’s quite another thing to start up nicotine use with vaping, which often leads to using traditional tobacco products down the road.

Workout myths to watch out for

or every two fitness truths, there’s a lie, and sometimes it’s hard to determine which is which (especially when it’s something many of us have just assumed for as long as we can remember). Recognising these fitness misconceptions will help you get better, faster, stronger, and more powerful.

Strength training will make you bulk up It’s pretty hard for women to bulk up from a normal strength-training routine because they don’t have as much testosterone as men (the difference in this hormone level makes men more prone to bulking up). In fact, if weight loss is your goal, strength training can actually help you get lean, but you

have to keep your nutrition in check, too. Muscle is metabolically active, so the more lean muscle you have, the more calories your body will burn at rest.

You can focus on losing fat from certain body parts Fat cells are distributed across your entire body, so if you want to lose fat from a specific spot, you need to lose

overall body fat. High-intensity interval training can work wonders after an intense workout, your body needs to take in oxygen at a higher rate to help it return to its natural resting state. This process requires the body to work harder, burning more calories in the process. Incorporating strength training can help you hit your goals too, since having more lean muscle will help your body burn more calories at rest.

Doing lots of cardio is the best way to lose weight If your goal is weight loss, logging endless miles on the treadmill isn’t always the best approach.

Yes, traditional cardio workouts will help create a day-to-day calorie deficit (in addition to a healthy diet), which is essential for losing weight.

But in the long-term,

since having more lean muscle mass helps your body burn more calories at rest, you’ll be adding to this deficit without doing a thing. A combination of both high-intensity cardio and strength training is a good idea. And don’t forget, when it comes to weight loss, having a smart nutrition plan is key.

Strength training means using machines and heavy weights Strength training means using resistance to work your muscles - and that resistance doesn’t necessarily have to come from a machine or a heavy weight. Aside from your own bodyweight, you can also use tools like kettlebells, medicine balls, and resistance bands to add resistance.

Crunches are a great exercise for your abs Crunches probably aren’t going to hurt your core strength, but they’re not the most efficient exercise you can do to strengthen your midsection. Your ab muscles are designed to work most effectively when you’re standing upright.

You should attempt to work out every day Definitely not true! When you work out, you’re breaking down muscle fibres so they can rebuild stronger.

However, to do this, you need to give your body time to recover from working out.

Aim for one to two days per week of active recovery rest days - that means doing something that doesn’t put stress on your body, such as a bit of gentle stretching or a walk to help keep your muscles loose.

JTRS Engineering to the rescue..!

How to keep your dog cool this summer As temperatures rise, follow our guide to keeping your dog safe and having fun in the summer sun…

How to keep a dog cool and prevent heatstroke Make sure your dog has access to clean water at all times, ideally a large bowl filled to the brim. Carry water and a bowl with you on walks.

On hot days, walk your dog during the cooler parts of the day, in the early morning and late evening Watch your pet for signs of overheating, including heavy panting and loss of energy. If you recognise these signs when on a walk, stop, find a shady spot and give your dog water.

Swimming

Monitor your dog carefully while they’re playing in the water. If they look like they are swallowing a lot of water, take them out and allow them to relax.

Swimming is excellent exercise for dogs and a great exercise alternative to walking in the summer heat. But remember that not all dogs like to swim, so if yours doesn’t then don’t force them and never throw a dog into water.

Drinking salt water is likely to make your dog sick and isn’t very good for them. Bring fresh water with you to the beach.

Wash salt and sand off your dog’s coat after swimming to prevent it drying and irritating their skin.

Be careful to avoid heatstroke on the beach.

Never leave your dog (or any pet) alone in a car, even with the windows open.

Sadly, each year dog owners drown trying to rescue their pets. Don’t risk dangerous situations.

Be particularly careful with short nosed dogs such as bull breeds, boxers, pugs, older dogs, and those that are overweight. These dogs can get heatstroke simply by running around.

Water intoxication is when dogs swallow too much water in a short space of time. It’s rare, but this condition can lead to brain damage and, in extreme circumstances, can be fatal.

Limit the amount of time dogs spend playing in the water to 10 minutes, allowing them to go to the toilet in between swimming sessions and catch their breath.

Always carry fresh drinking water with you when at the beach. Swallowing a lot of salt water can lead to salt poisoning which has the same symptoms as water intoxication.

Summer skin and coat Pale-coloured dogs are vulnerable to sunburn, particularly on their ears, noses and sparsely haired areas. Sun damage can lead to skin cancer which may require extensive surgery - even amputation in severe cases. Sunlight can also make existing skin conditions worse, particularly if your dog has allergies.

If your dog swims or paddles in the sea to keep cool, remember to rinse the salt water and sand from your dog’s coat after to avoid drying out and irritating their skin.

The new BMW 1 Series: in a class of its own I

n the family car class the BMW 1 Series is unique. In a sea of front and four-wheel-drive rivals, including everything from the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf at the more common or garden end of the market to the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Audi A3 at the swankier end, the 1 Series is available with rear-wheel drive. That makes it genuinely one of a kind.

The hype says that it should be sportier to drive as a result. But is it? That’s what we’re here for, so keep clicking through our review to find out everything about driving and owning a 1 Series, which is the best engine and trim to buy and how it stacks up against its rivals.

Performance The range kicks off with a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol.

This has longer gearing than many of its rivals that blunts acceleration, and the sluggish accelerator response doesn’t help matters, but ultimately

it provides perfectly adequate pace, especially if most of your journeys are local.

But we’d suggest stepping up to the 120i if you can, because it is much more flexible and rivals many hot hatches for pace, while the 2.0-litre turbocharged 125i is seriously rapid.

Finally, the M140i totes a prodigious 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged motor that’s just plain fast.

Suspension and ride The M Sport suspension takes out a little of that bounce, but makes things firmer elsewhere. We’d suggest going for the adaptive M Sport option if you can stretch to it because it offers the best compromise, along with larger wheels and tyres.

While it certainly adds to the playfulness of models such as the M140i, the lower-powered versions, such as the 118i and 116d, don’t have enough power to provoke any enthusiastic tail-out antics if that’s what you’re searching for.

Noise and vibration The 1 Series’ petrol engines are some of the more refined in this class.

Meanwhile, the diesels are harsher and more intrusive than many fitted to competitors, transmitting vibrations through the pedals and gearknob as you rev them. They settle down at a steady cruise, though.

As with other models in the BMW range, the six-speed manual gearbox has a springy action and there’s a heavier clutch than in most rivals. The optional eight-speed automatic is impressively smooth and one of the best auto gearboxes you can buy in this segment.

Interior The driver’s seat is mounted low, so tall drivers will have plenty of head room and the standard seats have a reasonable amount of adjustment.

However, the 1 Series is not the easiest family hatch to get comfortable in. You have to pull a plastic lever to shift the backrest and the clunky movement can make small adjustments quite tricky. More frustrating is the height adjustment, which requires you to pull a lever and either lift your weight off the seat to allow it to rise or put more pressure on it to drop it. The pedals are offset to the right, too, forcing you to sit at an awkward angle. It’s also frustrating that adjustable lumbar costs extra on most models. A Ford Focus and Audi A3 offer a more natural seating position.

Still, the centre console is tilted towards the driver, making the minimal array of buttons easier to reach, and the iDrive controller is next to the gearlever, where your hand naturally rests.

The 1 Series’ boot is okay rather than great for a family hatch. It’s smaller than that in an A3 and A-Class; a point proved by the fact that we fitted six carry-on suitcases in those two rivals and only five in the 1 Series.

Fit and finish in the 1 Series is decent considering this class spans such a varied price spectrum. There’s a nice mixture of brushed metal and gloss black surfaces in higher-spec cars, and the plastics on the upper surfaces in all versions look and feel good.

There’s a small loading lip to lift luggage over and into the boot, and no option of a height-adjustable boot floor that you get in an A3 or Volkswagen Golf. But if you drop the rear seats, you get a flat, uninterrupted load bay right the way to the front seats.

Passenger and boot space Two average-sized passengers will be relatively comfortable, although anyone approaching six feet will struggle – especially if there’s someone tall in the front. They will find their knees touching the front

However, the 1 Series doesn’t get automatic emergency braking or lane-keeping assistance as standard; these are part of the relatively inexpensive Driver Assistant Pack. Terraclean: how it works I took my Honda Cr-v diesel over to the guys at All Terrain after reading up on the benefits of such a treatment. Andrew, the owner, talked me through the process and I happily left my car with them for the morning and picked it up that afternoon.

After clocking up some 2,000 miles since, I can feel the difference in throttle response, a notable improvement in fuel economy and a host of other improvements. It has definitely made a difference so I have published the official report on the technology for you.

TerraClean is a patented technology which cleans the inside of your vehicle’s fuel system. By removing carbon it can improve engine performance, reduce emissions, and reduce costs by increasing component lifespan.

Stage 2 The second stage of the process uses only aliphatic fuel and is where the strength of the patented TerraClean technology comes into play.

Extra aliphatic fuel. These are necessary to allow the fuel to achieve an optimum combustion rate and achieve optimum power.

Aliphatic fuel burns very easily and combusts almost completely, leaving little or no carbon deposits in the combustion chambers. However, it creates very little power, so it is blended with powerful aromatic fuel.

Unfortunately, aromatic fuel does not combust completely, leaving a high concentration of hydrocarbons after combustion which are then transformed to hard carbon deposits within the engine system.

This highly-refined fuel passes through the TerraClean machine and goes through a process called “coulombic fractionation”.

It is given a passive negative electrical charge which breaks down the molecular structure of the fuel even further, turning it from a liquid to a vapour.

As the carbon found in the combustion chambers, exhaust, cat and lambda sensors has a natural positive electrical charge, the fuel and subsequent exhaust gases are attracted to it.

This then turns the carbon into carbon dioxide, which exits through the exhaust tail pipe.

The TerraClean end result The end result of a TerraClean is cleaner combustion chambers, exhaust, cats and lambda sensors.

This allows the ECU (the vehicle’s central processing unit) to react faster to fuel mixture changes and adjust fuel and ignition timing to suit.

TerraClean differs from alternative carbon cleaning solutions because it uses a very highly-refined fuel on which the vehicle being cleaned is run.

All petrol engines build up unwanted deposits in key areas over time.

Carbon will build up around the combustion chambers, exhaust ports, catalytic converters (cat) and lambda sensors, while gums, tars and varnishes will build up on the injection systems.

These contaminants have a negative effect on your engine’s efficiency, reducing MPG and power, and increasing emissions.

The TerraClean system will also clean through both Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems and Diesel Particle Filters (DPFs), where fitted, providing there is adequate air flow.

Where there is severely restricted flow (ie if a DPF is blocked - an increasingly common problem) there are DPF cleaning services available within the TerraClean family of solutions to address those problems.

A stitch in time...

After taking delivery of a new logo’d jacket and slipping it on for size I realised it was far too big. It appears the online site I purchased from had sent out an XL by mistake.

How to make the perfect burger The six commandments The barbecue season is upon us again... but before you serve up any burgers to your guests, commit these BBQ sins to memory.

1. Your meat matters Choose wisely. If you want a really juicy hamburger, use ground beef that’s a combination of 80% meat to 20% fat.

The less fat, the drier the burger.

2. Handle with care Throw out the hamburger press. The best burgers are hand formed using just enough pressure and taking no longer than necessary to form a patty.

Don’t press, mold, and over work. In your efforts to get a perfect-looking burger, you’ll wind up with a toughtasting one.

3. Don’t turn them too soon Let your burger get good and crusty before you flip it. You’ll know it’s ready to be turned when it releases easily from the grill grates or pan. If it doesn’t, don’t force the issue.

4. No squashing please Nothing’s more luscious than a fat, juicy burger that dribbles down your chin.

Avoid the urge to press down on your burger while it cooks as you’ll force out the juices - and the flavour along with them.

5. Take its temperature Don’t risk putting a damper on your cookout with food poisoning. Make sure you’ve killed any disease-causing bugs by cooking your meat until an instant-read thermometer says 160°F.

And no, the colour of the beef is not a good way to judge ‘doneness’.

6. Cook on cast iron - not a regular skillet If you can’t grill it, that is. A cast iron skillet is a good go-to when you have run out of gas, or just don’t want to face the hot, cold, or rainy conditions in the garden. Avoid the temptation to cook in a grill pan. While its ridges will give your patties grill marks, the space into between the marks will be gray and spongy. Cook in a flat-bottomed cast iron pan and both sides will come out browned and crusty, contrasting nicely with the juicy inside.

Get this right, and your neighbours will be queueing around the block - if you’re sure that’s what you want!
