Becki’s

Neighbourhood Corner

Dear Readers,

I hope you are all well and have been enjoying the warmer weather. Here in the Neighbourhood Policing Team, we have been busy with lots of Community Engagements from Sandi Starfish wrist bands to speeding initiatives and enforcement. Our neighbourhood priorities for Skegness for the next quarter will see our team focusing on the following areas; 1 - Speeding along Drummond Road: There have been numerous reports to Police regarding the excess speed some drivers are using. Our team will be visiting the area at various times of the day, carrying out speed checks, educating road users and taking enforcement action. 2 - Shoplifting: This continues to be an area of focus for the Neighbourhood Team. Shoplifting can have a significant impact upon businesses within the community and where a pattern of offending emerges at a particular store, the Neighbourhood Team will be carrying out targeted patrols hoping to deter Offenders, offer reassurance to members of the public and ensuring that Offenders are dealt with. 3 - Youth Anti Social Behaviour: The warmer weather, combined with more of the town open for business to welcome the holiday makers, traditionally sees a rise in

the number of reports that the Police receive of Anti Social Behaviour involving groups of youths. The areas for these reports are most typically along the seafront, the arcades, food outlets, parks and open spaces. To address the issue, the Neighbourhood Team will be actively engaging with groups of youths in the local area. Although many are simply meeting friends and spending time out doors, sadly there have been reports of damage being caused to property and annoyance to residents or business owners by some. Of these reports some are crimes of criminal damage which have been investigated by officers, others have resulted in youths being issued with written warnings issued by ELDC regarding their behaviours.

It is always worth a gentle reminder to any youngsters you know, who like to frequent the town or seafront, to just stop and think of the consequences of their actions that could lead to trouble. This will help to make Skegness a safe, welcoming place for residents and visitors alike and might just stop their names ending up on Police systems. There’s lots of really useful information on the Lincolnshire Police website and as always to report something to the Police: l Visit www.lincs.police.uk l Call 101 l Visit CrimeStoppers UK to give information anonymously l IN AN EMERGENCY ALWAYS CALL 999

Gardening Services Guide OR lazy afternoons in the sun and long evenings socialising, there is no better time to enjoy your garden than the summer months. Make the most of the warm weather by creating a beautiful space to relax in and be the envy of friends and family, whether that’s with blankets of vibrant flowers or an impressive focal point.

1. Think big One large shrub or tree (main pic) can instantly make your garden feel more settled and mature. Go for the biggest you can afford - reputable nurseries will offer a guarantee. If there’s a wholesale nursery in your area, you may be able to grab yourself a bargain by buying a large shrub in full flower.

2. Add structure When planning a garden, begin with evergreens - these will be the backbone, creating structure throughout the year. Repeating the same plant, such as box balls or columns of yew, makes a pleasing framework so showier plants can strut their stuff. Evergreens can be showstoppers, too - let’s not forget the glossy, plate-like leaves of Fatsia japonica, the gorgeous blooms of camellias or the striking silvery spears of Astelia chathamica. And they needn’t even be green: the hugely versatile pittosporums are available in a range of gold and silver, creamy or purple shades.

3. Create a focal point A strong feature will add impact and draw the eye away from any less-perfect areas of your garden. A dramatically planted container works well - especially in a small garden - and the

To advertise, text advert to 07868 433 225

Six easy summer garden ideas larger the container, the less often you’ll have to water it. As an alternative, try grouping your containers, always remembering that less is more. If they are different sizes, or you’re using a variety of plants, make sure they’re all made of the same material - coloured resin or galvanised steel for a modern, urban look, or weathered terracotta for a more traditional garden. To make a bold statement, plant up three identical containers with the same plants - you can change them with the seasons. It’s a trick often used in show gardens, and it works just as well at home.

4. High living Turn a dreary balcony or roof terrace into a joyous up-in-the-air allotment, choosing plants like tomatoes and chillies that enjoy a hot, sunny spot and won’t be too upset by windy conditions. Try sweet cherry tomatoes like ‘Sungold’, ‘Sweet Aperitif’ or trusty ‘Gardener’s Delight’ for a steady supply of fruit.

Juicy plum tomatoes are always worth a try, and there are many good varieties bred specially for hanging baskets, such as ‘Tumbler’ or goldenfruited ‘Balconi Yellow’, while vigorous, cascading ‘Hundreds and Thousands’ makes a pretty show. They are really easy to grow - just pop one plant into each basket, remember to water it (ideally adding a splash of tomato food) and that’s it.

5. Instant meadow Here’s the ultimate in labour-saving gardening: you can now create a beautiful wildflower meadow as simply as rolling out a carpet. Instead of waiting to sow seed in Spring or Autumn, simply peg down a mat of biodegradable felt, studded with seeds of some 20 different flowers. The felt acts as a barrier to competing weeds, especially thuggish grasses, allowing the flowers to get a head start. You do, alas, still have to prepare the ground: the simplest way is to weed-kill where you wish to lay your mat, then rake off the dead vegetation, leaving a fine tilth.

6. Quick colour Pelargoniums are the instant gardener’s best friend, bulking up quickly to fill the garden with colour all Summer long. In a new garden, concentrate them in key spots to give a ‘full garden’ feel while the rest of your planting catches up. They’re easy to find in garden centres, but a specialist nursery will offer a much more exciting range of colours and forms. It’s hard to beat Lord Bute for sumptuous colour, and don’t forget the scented leaf varieties, with aromas of cut grass or lemons, peppermint or cinnamon

Health

Coping with an asthma condition OPING with asthma, which is a chronic illness, can be difficult and can cause pain, fatigue, stress and disruption to daily life. In extreme cases, physical limitations - such as the shortness of breath that frequently accompanies asthma - may make it necessary to change work, school or recreational activities. Despite the challenges of coping with chronic asthma, there are effective ways to manage your symptoms, prevent complications and enjoy your everyday routines and activities.

Managing your asthma condition Consistent treatment can help you avoid uncontrolled symptoms and reduce your asthma attacks and complications. The following steps can help you manage your asthma: Work with a medical professional: From medications to lifestyle and environmental changes, your healthcare provider will work with you to monitor and treat your condition. Use asthma medications correctly: This includes taking your medication on schedule and using inhalers correctly.

26

Ask for instructions, a demonstration, and feedback on your technique. Be aware of the symptoms of an asthma attack: Symptoms may include coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and difficulty breathing. Use a peak flow meter to monitor your asthma: This lets you measure how quickly you can exhale air from your lungs - a sign of how well your asthma is controlled. Control allergens at home: Certain environmental triggers - such as tobacco smoke and furry pets - can aggravate asthma. Try to create an asthma-friendly home. Get regular exercise: If asthma attacks are limiting your physical activity, ask your doctor about appropriate exercises. Research has shown that people with lung diseases benefit physically and emotionally from physical activity.

Other strategies Put your creative energies into finding a way to reach your goals. Here are some more asthma coping tips: Learn to cope with the stress of having a chronic illness: Living with chronic asthma may lead to feelings of uncertainty, frustration, anger and

depression. Seek help by joining a support group to share experiences with others who also are living with this chronic illness. Adopt a problem-solving attitude and control negative thoughts: See the condition as a challenge to be met, not as a problem that can't be solved. Become an expert on the illness: The more you and your loved ones know about asthma, the easier it is to manage. Ask a medical professional to provide as much information as they can, including trusted sources on the Internet. Educate family members and friends: Your loved ones can provide you with emotional support and should also be alert to the warning signals of an asthma attack. Offer books or pamphlets for them to read, or ask them to visit your doctor with you. Slow down: Use relaxation and meditation to fully focus on being in the present, as stress and anxiety can trigger an asthma attack. Relaxation techniques may also help. Finally, don't ignore all the help that is available, whether from healthcare providers, family, and friends, community resources or support groups.

Travelling with dogs: a checklist

There’s no need for your dog to stay at home if you’re going on holiday - in fact, your dog can make a great travel companion. Travelling with dogs is easier if you prepare everything well in advance accommodation, travel arrangements and paperwork can all be organised months before you go, which means less stress and more fun for both of you.

Have the basics covered No matter how you choose to travel, there are a few essential things to keep in mind. Your dog can lose a considerable amount of body water through panting, so take a bowl and lots of bottles of water help them stay completely hydrated - and pack plenty of plastic bags for when your dog goes to the toilet.

Of course, you might not be planning on travelling abroad with your dog, but staying somewhere close to home, in which case things are even easier. Just keeping a few simple things in mind will really increase the ease of taking dogs on holiday.

This scheme lets people take their cats and dogs on holiday to a number of other countries, then return them to the UK, all without the need for quarantine. All owners have to do is make sure that certain conditions are met!

Go to your vet a few months before travelling with your dog Vaccinations will need to be up to date and there can also be specific vaccination requirements for the country you are visiting. Keep in mind that certificates might also need to be issued, depending on where you are travelling with your dog.

These conditions include booking your trip with an approved transport company, using an approved route and making sure your pet fulfils health criteria - like having a recent blood test and up-to-date vaccinations.

Dog insurance can be a life-saver

A nearby vet can help with many health enquiries, both big and small. Make sure you jot down any addresses and contact details before taking your dog abroad.

Make sure your accommodation is dog-friendly and, if you are staying at someone else’s home, check ahead about toilet facilities for your dog. Remember to think about the presence of other pets (either during travel or at your destination).

To make things easier for your dog to travel abroad with you, the British government have set up The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS for short), which is administered by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

The first thing to keep in mind when travelling with your dog to a new place is your pet’s health and safety. This task alone can make many dog owners reconsider their travelling plans, but it’s actually quite a simple process.

Look for the nearest vet office to your holiday stay

Accommodation tips

Schemes for travelling abroad with your dog

Health and safety

Look for policies that cover emergencies in the likelihood that your dog will need vet care on your trip abroad. Some policies might even contribute to the cost of cancelled holidays or kennel fees if it’s you needing a hospital stay.

pets to get distracted and dash for something! In fact, if you’re going overseas under the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS), it’s compulsory that your dog is microchipped.

Microchipping Microchipping your dog is important - many pets go on an unexpected adventure every now and then, and if your dog were to get lost whilst on holiday you’d want the best chance of seeing them returned. This is even more important if you’re going abroad with your dog, as unfamiliar sights and sounds might prompt more excitable

The list of everything you need for the scheme, including approved countries, companies and routes, is updated quite frequently, so check the DEFRA website or call the PETS Helpline on: 0870 241 1710. Remember, however, that when you go on holiday with your dog some countries still have special conditions or require particular documents. Also, some countries still require a period of quarantine on arrival.

Five great Portugese destinations P

ORTUGAL is a small country with much to see and do, making it relatively easy to explore. From the cosmopolitan city of Lisbon to the traditional villages, visitors will find a diverse range of travel options.

If you are traveling in the summer there are many beaches to enjoy, but the cultural and architectural attractions are a draw for tourists all year round.

Lisbon Lisbon is a colorful and vibrant destination. Renowned for its warm and sunny disposition, the city is blessed with a wealth of historic monuments, world-class museums, and a host of other fabulous things to do that can easily be worked into a single or multi-day itinerary. The most recognised of Lisbon’s major attractions, St. George’s Castle commands a glorious position on a hill overlooking the Portuguese capital. Another highlight is the 16th-century Jerónimos monastery, one of the great landmarks of Portugal, while the The Lisbon Oceanarium is one of Europe’s finest aquariums, and one of the largest in the world. Arguably the most emblematic of all Lisbon’s historical monuments, the Belém Tower squats in the shallows near the mouth of the River Tagus as a

38

symbol of Portugal’s extraordinary Age of Discovery during the 16th century.

Sintra Lying just 30 km northwest of Lisbon, but a world away from the clamor of city life, Sintra nestles at the foot of the wooded Serra de Sintra, dramatic mountains that define the landscape of this enchanting destination. The verdant surroundings and cooler air made Sintra a favorite summer sojourn for the Kings of Portugal. Sintra’s scenic old town, Sintra Vila, is centered on the Palácio Nacional de Sintra. The cobbled square in front of the palace is lined with shops, cafés, and colorful townhouses and is a good place to begin exploring. Those with stout legs will enjoy the climb to the Castelo dos Mouros; alternatively, sightseers can take a bus, which also stops at Palácio da Pena. Sintra is a popular day trip destination from Lisbon, and taking an organised tour is an easy and relaxing way to see the top sights.

and seek out some of the city’s most cherished architectural treasures. Another landmark structure is the iconic Ponte Dom Luís I, the spectacular double-decked iron bridge that spans the Douro and connects the city with Vila Nova de Gaia. A leisurely stroll along the Ribeira delivers a tangible sense of history, where you can breath in the briny atmosphere of the place. The river provides a scenic route to the Douro Valley, a verdant landscape of terraced hillsides dotted with hamlets and villages. A popular sightseeing option is to join one of the many cruises that ply the meandering waterway.

Tavira Cited by many a guidebook as the most captivating town in the Algarve, Tavira does indeed tick all the scenic boxes. The Rio Gilão cuts a smile through

Porto Seemingly hewn out of granite near the mouth of the River Douro, Portugal’s second city, known locally as Porto, dazzles with a rich collection of cultural attractions. Porto’s historical heart is the Ribeira. This waterfront bairro positively insists you lose yourself among the maze of narrow streets

Please mention Inside Skegness Magazine when responding to advertisements

Tavira

Porto this pleasantly laid-back town, with a Roman footbridge connecting one side with the other. The waterfront makes for a wonderful walk, before or after you’ve uncovered the rest of Tavira’s historic treasures. The castle walls provide glorious views across the old town and the nearby coast. You can also explore the Igreja de Santa do Castelo, the grandiose church where warrior knights are entombed. An appealing option, especially during the hot summer months, is to visit the offshore Ilha de Tavira, an enormous beach that, even in high season, has plenty of room to spare. It’s reached by

passenger ferry from a jetty at Quatro Águas.

Guimarães It’s fitting that the old center of Guimarães is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, given that this noble city was once the capital of Portugal. That was during the 12th century, when the country’s first king, Afonso Henriques, proclaimed this northern city the birthplace of the nation. A hugely evocative place, Guimarães is the location of a number of important historic monuments, not least the castle, where Afonso was reputedly baptised. The equally significant Paço

Guimarães

dos Duques, the royal palace, houses an engaging museum, although the Museu de Alberto Sampaio, which is in the Romanesque cloister of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, on Largo da Oliveira, has a no less outstanding collection of artifacts. Actually, Guimarães’s famous main square appears straight out of the Middle Ages, with its elaborately carved granite facades; ornate statuary; and the Padrão do Salado, a 14th-century shrine standing in front of the monastery.

Five pool exercises for a full-body workout If you’re looking for a break from your usual fitness routine, why not dive into aquatic exercise? Exercising in water can provide a great full-body workout without some of the drawbacks of land-based exercises. Here’s a look at the benefits of water workouts, along with five pool exercises that can work the major muscle groups in your body.

The benefits of pool exercises Because water offers heavier resistance than air, working out in the pool can make the same exercises that you’d do on land more challenging. The heavier resistance can engage your muscles more fully and also help you burn more calories in a shorter amount of time, helping you increase your strength, endurance and flexibility.

Do you need any special equipment? If you attend an aquatic class at a fitness center, the facility will likely provide any equipment that you need. If you’re working out on your own, you may need: Wrist or ankle weights: These strap-on weights can increase the resistance of your arm and leg movements in water. Foam dumbbells: Lightweight when dry, heavy in water.

Hand paddles or resistance gloves: To boost your strength training in water. Kickboard: This allows you to hold on and stay afloat while doing workouts. Buoyancy belt: Keeps your head above water so you can do arm exercises without treading water.

Pool exercises for a full body workout 1. Walk in water Walking in water can target your arms, core, and lower body. Increase intensity by using hand or ankle weights. l Start off walking in shallow water, around waist height. l Lengthen your spine and walk by putting pressure on your heel first and then your toes. l Keep your arms at your side, in the water, and move them as you walk. l Continue walking for 5-10 minutes. 2. Water arm lifts 1-3 sets, 10-15 reps This exercise will help strengthen the muscles in your arms. Using foam dumbbells will help add more resistance. l Stand in water up to your shoulders. l Hold the dumbbells at your side, with your palms facing up. l Draw your elbows in close to your torso as you lift your forearms to the height of the water. l Rotate your wrists to turn your palms facedown. l Lower your arms back to the starting position.

3. Jumping jacks 1-3 sets, 8-12 reps Jumping jacks work the muscles in both your upper and lower body. You can add resistance with wrist and ankle weights. l Stand in water at chest level. l Start with your feet together and your arms at your side. l Jump by moving your legs outward and, at the same time, bringing your arms over your head. l Jump again to return to the starting position with your feet together and your arms at your side. 4. Leg shoots 1-3 sets, 8-12 reps This dynamic exercise works your core, low back, and legs. l Keep your feet off the bottom of the pool during this exercise. l Tuck your knees into your chest. l Explosively press your feet and legs out in front and float flat on your back. l Draw your knees back into your chest. l Press your legs out behind you so you’re floating on your stomach.

5. Leg kicks 1-3 minutes ech kick This exercise works the muscles in your core and legs. Use ankle weights to make it more challenging. l Hold onto the pool ledge or hold a kickboard. l Flutter-kick your legs. l Scissor-kick your legs open and closed. l Breaststroke kick with your legs. l Follow with dolphin kicks.

Citroen C5 X Big, bold and unashamedly luxurious

petrol. If you want truly punchy performance, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has a 0-62mph time of 7.8 seconds and is the quickest model in the range. When the 178bhp petrol engine and 109bhp motor work in unison, the C5X feels genuinely sprightly, although there is often a delay between putting your foot down and both systems waking up.

Suspension and ride comfort ITROEN’S C5 X is a lot like the Palace of Versailles. Both are big and unashamedly luxurious, and both are designed to provide those who spend time inside them with an experience to remember. Indeed, the C5 Xstands proud as the largest and most luxurious car Citroën makes. How big? Well, the C5 X is longer than most conventional large SUVs, and it’s impressively imposing in the metal.

Citroën makes some bold claims about comfort in the C5 X, and the good news is that there’s substance to go with them. All models get the French manufacturer’s Progressive Hydraulic Cushions - in effect, hydraulic bump stops - and PHEV models adds active dampers. Sitting on relatively small standard-fit 19in wheels, the C5X glides over minor road imperfections and does a good job of cushioning you from ruts and potholes.

Handling While Citroën is obsessed with comfort, it doesn’t care much about sportiness, and the C5 X exhibits plenty of body lean if you turn into a bend at speed. It’s quite pleasant to steer though, responding fairly faithfully to your inputs and letting go gradually when it starts to wash wide in a corner. If you want more steering feel and entertaining handling, you’d be better off looking at the Ford Kuga..

Interior You sit lower down in the Citroën C5 X than in most large SUVs but higher than you would in a raised estate car. We actually found the driving position more natural than the sit-up-and-beg type in the closely related Citroën C5 Aircross. The car’s Advanced Comfort Seats are lined with memory foam to make them soft but still supportive, and they can be adjusted for height and lumbar support on all trims.

Performance and drive We test drove the Citroën C5 X with a 128bhp 1.2-litre PureTech 130 engine. You might imagine that such a small unit would struggle to pull this large SUV along, but acceleration is more than respectable. It’s certainly more tractable than the Mazda CX-5 Skyactiv

The C5 X has physical knobs and buttons for controlling its air conditioning. That makes it much easier and less distracting to adjust the temperature on the move.

Visibility, parking sensors and cameras The C5 X’s thick windscreen pillars can cause visibility problems at junctions. To help mitigate this, all models get front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. A high-definition 360-degree camera comes as standard on Shine Plus models. All trim levels get automatic wipers and bright automatic LED headlights to increase visibility at night.

Sat nav and infotainment In higher-spec versions of the C5 X, you get a large 12.0in landscapeoriented touchscreen (you get an 8.0in one with Pure trim) mounted high up on the dashboard. It’s not as user-friendly as the

infotainment systems in the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento but the graphics are pleasingly crisp and the screen responds fairly quickly to inputs. You also get wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring. The standard eight-speaker stereo sounds punchy, but if you select the Shine Plus trim, you can upgrade to a more powerful system with a subwoofer and dashboard speaker for a reasonable sum.

Passenger & boot space Leg room is plentiful in the front of the Citroën C5 X, and headroom is acceptable for those over six feet tall, even with the optional panoramic sunroof fitted (available with Shine Plus trim). The C5 X has a long wheelbase so you won’t be surprised to learn that there’s a lot of legroom in the rear - certainly enough to compete with the limo-like Skoda Superb Estate.

The C5 X’s rear seatbacks can be lowered by either pulling a lever on the top of each backrest or using levers in the boot. The large tailgate - which is powered if you go for the top-spec Shine Plus trim - means you get a large boot aperture and low loading height, making getting bulky items in and out easy.

Extras Along with infotainment gadgets and visibility aids, it comes with dual-zone climate control, 19in alloy wheels, cruise control and automatic lights and wipers. The Shine Plus version adds heated ‘Paloma’ leather seats, acoustically insulated windows,, blind-spot detection and a 360-degree reversing camera.

Safety and security Active safety features include a driver attention alert system, lane-departure warning and automatic emergency braking (AEB). There’s also an SOS call function that can contact the emergency services if you’re involved in an accident.

Costs and verdict A base model will cost cash buyers less than the equivalent Ford Kuga, Mazda CX-5 and Skoda Kodiaq. It’s a bargain compared with the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento and Peugeot 5008. The PHEV model is competitively priced among plug-in hybrids too.

HOROSCOPES

Aries

(March 21 - April 19)

You’ll find it easy to get along with people - you’ll be feeling congenial and generous to friends as well as close partners. In fact, you could be taking a partnership to the next level. Whatever your relationship status, the month promises luck where others are involved.

Taurus

(April 20 - May 20)

Gemini

(May 21 - June 20)

Cancer

(June 21 - July 22)

You will be taking stock of what you most want to achieve regarding your main aims and career goals. Expressing yourself at work will give you an enormous sense of wellbeing and following your gut instincts will give you a better guide than merely using logical thought. Your naturally inquisitive mind is searching for greater stimulation and it may be time to consider taking up some kind of serious study. As longas you feel challenged you should get a lot from it. There may even be a link with travel abroad. You may be experiencing some tension with your work colleagues which might have spilled out into open arguments, whether you are directly involved or not. Don’t let work pressures get you down and try not to take any frustrations out on loved ones at home.

Leo

(July 23 - August 22)

Love is tinged with romance as you find yourself drawn irresistably to people who give off an air of mystery. This is great if you’re in a relationship, beacuse it will add a touch of glamour to all your interactions, showing off that sparkle that initially brought you together.

Virgo

(August 23 - September 22)

Creative and unusual ideas will provide the best solutions to dealing with all those little tasks. Embrace the latest technology, because you could find that you have a knack for it and having new skills will make your work life easier. There could also be financial dividends.

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

Lady Luck is with you now and you’re positively bursting with energy! What better way of using it up than embarking on a new romance. Keep it light and fun and you’ll find yourself enrapt by the object of your affection.

Scorpio

(October 23 - November 21)

You’re keen to develop a sense of security, and the best way of doing this is by either visiting family or spending quality time relaxing in your own home. You’ll have an eye for attractive items of decor this month and you may be splashing out on luxury items you don’t need.

Sagittarius

(November 22 - December 21)

You may be experiencing quite a stressful period that’s seeing you get quite angry and frustrated. Power struggles with people will set tempers flaring. The best way to expel excess energy is a rigorous exercise regime, which will result in a much calmer and relaxed you.

Capricorn

(‘ 22 - January 19)

Keep a sharp eye on your money or you may find it slipping through your fingers rather too easily. Frittering away your hard-earned cash on fun, frivolous things is fine if you can afford it however, you may soon find that retail therapy isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Aquarius

(January 20 - February 18)

You’re in your element! With your innate quirkiness bubbling to the surface, you can’t wait to make your presence felt at both work and play. There’s an aura of unusual glamour about you that will be quite irresistable to a lot of people.

Pisces

(February 19 - March 20)

Your genuine selfless nature is in full force and you could find that you’re called on to act in a caring and compassionate way. This could see you being of service to someone close to you, or you may get more directly involved in a charitable organisation of some kind.
