Vehicles in Art Form

Y name is Richard Knowles and, first and foremost, I am an artist working primarily in the medium of watercolour, specialising in the painting and drawing of motor vehicles such as cars, vans, motorcycles, planes and the like.

any painting or drawing is always the most difficult, being faced with a large blank sheet of paper or canvas. This can be likened to an author about to begin the first page of a new book. My own preference is to be provided with a choice of two or three really clear photographs of the vehicle I am about to create a painting of.

I do love to reproduce the light and reflections affecting the panels of glass and metal in a vehicle as it does give depth to a painting.

The art experience for me began at a very early age; I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. It has become a way of life, relaxation and earning a living; and one thing is for sure, it has been and always is enjoyable. I have been trained as a Technical Illustrator, working for the Ministry of Defence in this capacity, and then within various technical publication agencies. Although I assist my wife, Glyn Plumb (artist and art tutor), in the day to day practicalities of her business, "Glyn's Art for Life", a lot of my time is spent concentrating on producing my own commissions. As far as these commissions are concerned, making the first marks of

Main pic (top): Peugeot Vintage Car Above: Yamaha Racer

After studying the photographs and receiving ideas from a client to ascertain exactly what they require, the task of producing a detailed drawing begins. It is most important that the painting truly portrays the subject and that it incorporates all necessary aspects requested, then the vision in my head begins to come to life.

However, if there is also a possibility of viewing the vehicle itself first hand, then that is always a bonus as it gives me more of a sense of size and presence.

Paintings can create a lasting visual reminder, making an ideal gift for a special occasion or just to keep for yourself. Tastefully mounted and framed, a painting can grace any room. Paintings can have an enormous advantage in comparison to a framed photograph, in that it gives life to a subject due to the artist putting their heart and soul into its creation. l If you would like to view some of my selected artwork or require further information please go to the "Meet Richard" page on www.glynsartforlife. com or contact me on 07767 135243.

Skegness College of Vocational Training is ready to accept new students for a September 2020 start SCVT is a compact, local

education provider offering a range of vocational and practical qualifications that could help you with your next step and move in the right direction, whether that’s further education, employment or into an apprenticeship, we can help. Our credentials speak for themselves, as we successfully proved during an Ofsted inspection in February. Among the many positive reflections in the Ofsted report, we were credited with being approachable, friendly and incredibly supportive of a range of learning and behavioural needs. We pride ourselves on getting to know students well, to then be able to help further their ambitions.

Unfortunately, COVID and lockdown then happened. Not that it affected us. We maintained close contact with our students since the beginning and have continued to support learning using Google Classroom, ‘Zoom’ based tutorials, emails and even hand delivering paper-based work to learner’s homes for those that preferred it. Our priority is the education and welfare of each and every student, and that will continue in any situation. We would like to thank our current students for maintaining skills and who have continued to show improvements and enthusiasm throughout a difficult and uncertain period. We have had and continue to maintain, currently a 95% engagement with student responses, which is amazing. To the future; We are already

processing applications for the new academic year in September. We will be enabling a much varied teaching style for the new term and will continue to provide opportunities for remote and online learning, however our expertise is face-to-face teaching and we have invested huge amounts of time and effort into being able to offer safe and supportive environments for you to learn in. We are very excited about the new academic year and look forward to meeting you, safely of course. For applications and more information then get in touch with SCVT now. All the details are in the advert, but spaces are limited, so don’t leave it too late.

Your future can be better… so, learn with us at SCVT.

MOVE MORE IN 2020 Being active and moving more can improve your mental health and overall wellbeing, as well as reducing your risk of many health conditions. You can meet new people and enjoy life more. Becoming more active doesn’t mean spending a lot of money or taking up any kind of exercise that you don’t enjoy. Whenever you move in any way (even doing the housework or gardening) this counts as being active. Reduce sitting or lying down time Reducing long periods of sitting or lying down is a great way to increase your activity levels. Remember all movement matters. Here are a few ideas to make those day to day activities more active: • • • • •

Stand or march on the spot or go to make a cuppa during the TV adverts After every chapter of reading a book make a conscious effort to stretch your legs and go for a walk Stand up at work Set time limits on sitting or lying down If getting up and about is difficult, march or move your arms in a circular motion whilst sat down

Increase movement in leisure activities This can be a fun and simple way of increasing activity levels. Here are a few examples: gardening, using the car or bus less; walk or cycle instead, taking the stairs instead of the lift, home decoration or repairs, going bowling, or taking a walk on the beach. A first step with exercise you enjoy Moderate exercise is recommended to be best for improving our health. Guidelines suggest you work towards 150 minutes per week (which can be in short sessions). This will make you breathe faster and your heart rate increase. One way to tell if you’re exercising at a moderate intensity level is if you can still talk, but not sing during the activity. You should include both a warm up and cool down into your routine. It is important to include both aerobic exercise (which work our heart and lungs) and strength exercise (which strengths and builds muscles and bone strength). Some examples are: Aerobic: brisk walking, riding a bike, dancing, doubles tennis, pushing a lawn mower Strength: water aerobics, carrying heavy shopping bags, yoga / pilates, lifting weights / doing exercises such as sit-ups and pressups, heavy gardening Most importantly, get moving more! Whether standing during TV adverts, walking on the beach or bowling with friends. ALL movement matters and we all have different starting points!

Best European 0 2 0 2 s y Autumn/Winter a d i l sunshine breaks Ho T he Coronavirus may have put an end to everyone’s summer travel plans, but, if the easing of restrictions continues, European travel (in some form) may be possible towards the end of the year. For an autumn or winter beach break under blue skies, southern Europe is always a popular destination. Here we look at some of the best places to visit in Spain, Italy, Greece and Malta.

Symi, Greece ‘The sea is so warm you can swim until Christmas’ Symi’s amphitheatre-like harbour is a sun-trap, with its own microclimate. The sea is so warm you can swim until Christmas. Guaranteed sunshine isn’t the only reason this quietly glamorous Dodecanese island enjoys an unusually long season: the Archangel Michael Festival on 8 November each year attracts Orthodox Christian pilgrims from all over Greece to Panormitis monastery in the uninhabited south-

west of the island, which is such an important religious site that the ferry also stops there.

Symi is famous for its seafood, especially the tiny local shrimps, flash-fried and eaten whole. The best place to try them is Tholos (about €30 a head, +30 22460 72033) at the tip of the horseshoe harbour. Tuck into unctuous octopus and fabulous taramasalata with a panorama of the prettiest port in Greece.

Most of Symi’s beaches are equally spectacular - and tantalisingly hard to reach, at least by car. Craggy footpaths and chugging water taxis take you to Nanou, a pebble beach with a tamarisk-shaded shack serving grilled just-caught fish, and Marathounta, where plucky goats will steal your leftovers at the excellent farm-to-table Taverna Marathounta (about €25 a head). Cliff-backed Agios Georgios Disalonas on the east coast is accessible only by boat, and the beach is in deep shade by mid-afternoon. It’s a shorter, gentler walk from the harbour to the waterfront hamlets of Nimborio to the west, and Pedi to the east.

Polignano a Mare, Italy

‘Cannier tourists wait for late summer and autumn’

For a city-based holiday, Lecce is a good choice, with its baroque architecture and Roman ruins, as is Foggia, if palaces and churches are your thing. Lecce’s historic Palazzo Gorgoni (doubles from €90 B&B) is right in the centre. The famous medieval città bianche (white towns) of Ostuni, Locorotondo, Cisternino, Martina Franca and Ceglie Messapica offer a refreshing slice of Italy: they get busy, but mostly with Italian visitors.

However, first choice would be the little seaside town of Polignano a Mare, a prepossessing place just made for quiet ambling and much-loved by Pugliesi themselves. Its beach in a narrow cove, with limestone cliffs topped by a jumble of ancient buildings. Searching for shade, you can stroll the quiet stone-flagged back streets, where quotations from the great and the good have been daubed on sun-bleached doors. Grab an ice-cream or a crepe at Joya Canti di Stagione on the corner of Via

Gelso and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, or have a healthy blow-out at Mint, where seasonal ingredients come from local farmers and fishermen. Afterwards, hit the sack at Malù (doubles from €70, bebmalu.it) or a little way out of town at the glorious pile that is San Tommaso (doubles from €75 B&B).

Tarifa, Spain ‘A funky party town with stylish accommodation and great eating’ Southern Spain’s city beaches are year-round urban playgrounds, but despite 300 days of sun and daytime temperatures around 20C into December, vast swathes of the coast are deserted out of summer. Tarifa, however - continental Europe’s most southerly town - is always lively because it’s windy: kitesurfers and windsurfers blow in all year round. In recent years, Tarifa has morphed from a funky party town to a funky party town with stylish accommodation and great eating, too. West from Tarifa’s ancient gates lies a stretch of fabulous beaches. Los Lances and Valdequeros are good for seeing kitesurfers in action, and several companies offer half-day tasters or all-inclusive packages, plus equipment to hire or buy. Continue west to Bolonia, and explore its seaside Roman ruin, Baelo Claudia. These waters are packed with dolphins and whales and, until the end of October, there’s a fairly good chance of spotting them on a two-hour boat trip (adult €30, firmm.org).

Gozo, Malta ‘The Calypso Caves, immortalised in Homer’s Odyssey, are adjacent to Ramla Bay, one of the finest beaches in the world’ Gozo’s arresting greenery - relative to Malta’s dustier palette - is best surveyed from the lofty citadel in Victoria, its dinky capital. It’s easily reached by taxi (a sedate experience by Mediterranean standards, most rides around €10). For seaside lovers, Marsalforn on the north coast packs a lot in, with excellent restaurants - notably Il-Kartell (mains €15). On its eastern edge, the beach at Ghar Qawqla is perfect for swimming into October. A good bet for accommodation is Murella Living

(doubles from €70 B&B), an artsy new joint with colourful rooms themed around the sights and culture of the island. Gozo is rightly famed for its year-round diving: the Inland Sea is a crystal-clear lagoon on the west coast, connected to the sea by a narrow, divable crevasse and teeming with marine life. Divers can inspect the roomy MV Karwela, which was deliberately scuttled in 2006 to create a reef. For Neolithic spectacle the Ggantika Temple is unbeatable: it’s 1,000 years older than Stonehenge and every bit as breathtaking. On the north coast, the Calypso Caves, immortalised in Homer’s Odyssey, are handily adjacent to Ramla Bay, consistently rated one of the finest beaches in the world.

Tarifa: Unspoilt beaches

Symi: Greece’s prettiest port

How gardening can help your mental health

S

TAYING at home during the coronavirus outbreak might be challenging, especially for people who live on their own. Gardening can help turn this situation into a positive - we can sow seeds or plant seedlings now and watch them develop and bloom over the coming weeks and months. And the well-documented benefits of gardening to our mental health and physical wellbeing are more important now than ever.

Sow seeds Sowing seeds and watching the plants grow is a great way to relieve stress and remain mindful of your

surroundings. You could sow anything you fancy - annual herbs to use in cooking, flowers such as cosmos and sunflowers to brighten up the garden, or vegetables to use later in the season. Use a seed tray and propagator if you have one, or pots filled with peat-free compost and covered with a clear plastic bag.

Plant up a container display A pretty container display can really lift the spirits. Consider asking someone to go to the garden centre for you, or buy mail-order plants or seeds. Why not phone your local garden centre to see if they’ll deliver? Choose from perennial plants that are in flower now, which you can transplant into the garden when they’re past their best, or annuals for a quick, seasonal display.

deliver. If not, there are plenty of online retailers that sell pond plants. Choose a mix of oxygenating, floating and submerged plants, to provide the best variety of habitats.

Gardens Clean the greenhouse For many people, there’s never a good time to clean the greenhouse. But doing so will bring more light to tender seedlings growing inside, as well as removing harmful pests which could be lingering on from last year. So get your scrubbing brush, sponge and hosepipe ready for a mini workout.

Install a water butt If you’ve been meaning to install a water butt for a while then now’s the time to do it. You can buy whole kits online and simply follow instructions on installing it. Wall-mounted water butts are a great way to save space. It’s fairly straightforward to connect them to a downpipe from your house, shed or greenhouse.

Build a garden pond A pond is one of the best garden habitats you can create for wildlife, attracting birds, amphibians, mammals and aquatic insects. Digging a pond is labour intensive but extremely rewarding - if you’re missing your gym then this is the job for you. Buy pond liner online and see if you can source plants from your local garden centre - again, see if they will

Build a raised bed A raised bed makes growing vegetables easier, particularly if you have heavy soil. It can also be useful if you have a disability or mobility issues. You can buy raised bed kits or make your own using old scaffolding planks. Then simply fill with topsoil and start planting.

Make a bee hotel A bee hotel provides nesting habitat for solitary bees such as red mason bees, which are on the wing from April to June, and leafcutter bees, which are

From left: A water butt, raised bed and bee hotel. flying from June to August. Rather than forming large nests like bumblebees and honeybees, solitary bees lay individual eggs in cells, stocked with nectar and pollen for the grubs to eat when they hatch. They don’t sting!

Grow houseplants If you don’t have a garden, or can’t get into the garden, you can bring a touch of the outdoors, in. Houseplants have been shown to clean the air in our homes, as well as lift our spirits. Planting up a few containers of choice houseplants will not only keep you occupied, but will provide you with a long season of interest. There are plenty of online houseplant retailers, and you can buy pots, compost and decorative pebbles online, too.

Three ways to stay active while still at home

A

LTHOUGH many of the Coronavirus restrictions are slowly being relaxed, many people people are still spending long periods confined to their homes. The prospect of staying at home for any prolonged period of time can seem overwhelming and a little scary, especially if you’re someone who enjoys keeping fit and active and hitting that daily step count, or an older person who might be worried about feeling isolated. Rather than letting the isolation scare you, why not try and embrace it as an opportunity to get your sweat on with new, at-home workouts you’ve never tried before, incorporating more simplistic healthy habits into your daily routine and mix things up a little.

Stick to an active routine While you may not be able to stick to your normal routine - leaving the house, going shopping, meeting friends for coffee and doing your usual physical activities - you can create a new routine at home which includes alternative ways to keep active. As tempting as it may be to stay in bed and work in your PJs, in the long run this is bound to have a detrimental effect on your overall mood. Try: For example, getting up at the same time every day, doing a workout first thing (more on this to come), taking a shower and making a nice breakfast, if that order appeals to you. There are loads of studies backing up the benefits of routine on positive mental health, and it’s something Mind UK recommends for “staying grounded”.

Stretch in the living room Whether you’d rather just have a bit of a stretch on your bedroom floor when you wake up or actually set aside half an hour or so every day to do a guided yoga routine, moderate stretching or yoga style movement will help avoid stiff joints and maintain good blood circulation. It’s worth noting that there are actually lots of different types of yoga: from the more dynamic, designed to make you get a sweat on and ‘work out’, to the more steady ‘Vinyasa’ flows, for

those needing a stretch after sitting down all day. Whichever you fancy, there are hundreds of free flows available to stream on YouTube, but the ‘Yoga with Adriene’ routines are particularly simple and easy to follow, with the instructor guiding you through what to do step-by-step and different yoga for different vocations, ages and needs.

Try an ‘at home workout’ Dig out your old Davina McCall workout DVD and stick it on the television, or, if you don’t have any DVDs, try one of Joe Wicks’s many athome workouts. There are hundreds to choose from on his YouTube channel, totally free of charge and tailored for different ages and abilities, so there’s no need to feel overwhelmed or like you don’t know which one to go for. Wondering how to watch and work out at the same time? If you have a mobile phone connected to WiFi, you can stream the workout video on there, although you’ll have a much better view if you load the workout on a computer or your television, water and sweat towel at the ready.

You know exercise is good for you - but do you know why? Well, the NHS website says that “physical activity can boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress, depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease”.

Health Five foods to boost your immune system Elderberries Extracts of elderberry have antiviral, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. Elderberry is also high in flavonoids. People take elderberry syrup as a remedy for colds, flus and bacterial sinus infections. The plant medicine works by reducing swelling in mucus membranes. Some studies suggest elderberry extract reduces the duration of the flu. If it works for flu infections, it may help your immune system against coronavirus infection.

Elderberry benefits are numerous, however, the remedy may interact with certain prescription medications. Always check with your doctor prior to adding any new remedy to your regimen. Elderberry may interact with the following medications.

Mushrooms Mushrooms are high in selenium and B vitamins like riboflavin and niacin. These minerals and vitamins are necessary for the immune system to work in tip top form. Mushrooms are also high in polysaccharides, sugar-like molecules that boost immune function. Mushrooms have a savoury quality that can enhance the flavor of many dishes. Obedience training for dogs Part Three

After you decide on some new skills you’d like to teach your dog, you’ll be ready to start training. To maximise her learning potential and make sure you both enjoy the training experience, keep the following basic tips in mind:

Training Tips When teaching new skills, keep training sessions short and sweet Like kids, dogs don’t have long attention spans. There’s no hardand-fast rule, but an ideal average training session should last 15 minutes or less. Within that session, you can work on one skill or switch between a few different skills. To keep things interesting, try doing 5 to 15 repetitions of one behaviour and then doing 5 to 15 repetitions of another behaviour. You can also practice new skills and keep old ones polished by doing single repetitions at convenient times throughout the day. For example, before giving your dog a new chew bone, ask her to sit or lie down to earn it.

Stop while you’re ahead End training sessions on a good note, with a skill you know your dog can do well, and be sure to stop before either one of you gets tired, bored or frustrated.

For dogs, English is a second language Dogs aren’t born understanding English. They can learn the significance of specific words, like “sit” and “walk” and “treat,” but when humans bury those familiar words in complex sentences, dogs sometimes have difficulty understanding. They can also get confused when people use different words for the same thing. For example, some people will confuse their dogs by saying, “Fluffy,

down!” one day and “Sit down, Fluffy!” another day. Then they wonder why Fluffy doesn’t respond the same way every time. When teaching your dog a cue or command, decide on just one word or phrase, and make sure you and your family use it clearly and consistently.

Take baby steps Dogs, just like people, learn best when new tasks are broken down into small steps. For example, you can’t go out and dance unless you learn all of the individual steps first! When teaching your dog a new skill, begin with an easy first step and increase difficulty gradually. If you’re training your dog to stay, start by asking her to stay for just 3 seconds. After some practice, try increasing the duration of her stay to 8 seconds. When your dog has mastered an 8-second stay, make

things a little harder by increasing the time to 15 seconds. Over the next week or two, continue to gradually increase the duration of the stay from 15 seconds to 30 seconds to a minute to a few minutes, etc. By training systematically and increasing difficulty slowly, you’ll help your dog learn faster in the long run.

Work on only one part of a skill at a time Many of the skills we want our dogs to learn are complex. For instance, if you want to train a solid sit-stay, you’ll need to work on teaching your dog that she should stay in a sitting position until you release her (duration), she should stay while you move away from her (distance), and she should stay while distracting things are going on around her (distraction). You’ll probably both get frustrated if you try to teach her all of these things at the same time. Instead, start with just one part of the skill and, when your dog has mastered that, add another part. For example, you can work on duration first. When your dog can sit-stay for a few minutes in a quiet place with no distractions while you stand right next to her, start training her to stay while you move away from her. While you focus on that new part of the skill, go back to asking your dog to stay for just a few seconds again. When your dog can stay while you move around the room, slowly build up the duration of the stay again. Then you can add the next part-training in a more distracting environment. Again, when you make the skill harder by adding distraction, make the other parts-duration and distance-easier for a little while. If you work on all the parts of a complex skill separately before putting them together, you’ll set your dog up to succeed.

Part four will appear in the next issue. To advertise text advert to 07868 433 225

The new Kia Sportage: A great all-rounder

T

HE Kia Sportage is a family SUV you’ll want to consider if you’re looking for something with a spacious cabin and a wide range of engines and want something that’ll stand out from the likes of the Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson and Skoda Karoq. Take the Kia Sportage’s front end for example. You might not call it conventionally attractive, but it’s certainly eye-catching. In addition to its slightly snooty front end, GT Line models come with plenty of shiny sill trims and chrome exhaust tips to make them look sportier than most family SUVs. Everything’s really easy to use, including the touchscreen infotainment system. A Skoda Karoq’s display is perhaps a bit more high-tech, but the Kia Sportage comes with all-important smartphone mirroring as standard. It also gets seats with a decent amount of adjustment to help you find your perfect driving position and there’s enough space in the back for tall adualts to get pretty comfy. There’s a little more space to carry three adults at once in the Mazda CX-5, but you’d never call the Kia Sportage pokey and it’s very easy to fit a couple of child seats.

relaxing to drive for long periods - especially in higher-spec models with their upgraded driver assistance systems - and you won’t hear a great deal of wind or tyre noise at motorway speeds.

and there’s just enough headroom to stop their heads touching the ceiling – though there’s a bit less space in models with a panoramic glass roof. The back seats even recline slightly perfect for nodding off on a long drive.

Head down some country roads and you’ll find the Kia Sportage doesn’t quite live up to its athletic name. It doesn’t lean a great deal in sharp bends - so there’ll be no reason for passengers to feel carsick after a few miles - but it doesn’t feel as nimble as a Mazda CX-5.

What’s it like to drive? The Kia Sportage is reasonably easy to drive in town - despite its fairly large size. You get a decent view out and the relatively light controls mean you won’t feel tired

Passenger space The Kia Sportage’s cabin is pretty spacious when compared with other similar-sized SUVs.

It’s a similar story when you come to load the boot. It isn’t the biggest, but it’s roomy enough to carry four people’s luggage for a week away and a bike will fit if you fold the back seats down. If you do plan to use your Kia Sportage for regular family road trips, you’ll want one of the economical diesel engines. These are pretty smooth at motorway speeds and the more powerful 1.6- and hybrid 2-litre versions have enough poke to easily overtake slow-moving traffic. There’s also a pair of petrol engines to consider if you spend more time driving in town.

There’s loads of head and leg room in the front and you get seat-height adjustment as standard to make sure you get a good view out.

Whichever engine you choose, you’ll find the Kia Sportage is reasonably comfortable - if not quite as smooth as the Peugeot 3008. It’s still pretty

There’s an impressive amount of space in the Kia Sportage’s back seats, too. Six-foot passengers have enough knee room to sit behind an equally tall driver

52

Thankfully, you don’t have to shell out for a high-spec model if you want adjustable lumbar support - this comes as standard across the range and helps make long journeys more comfortable.

having just squeezed into a tight parking space. There isn’t much to complain about when you leave the city and head out onto a twisty back road. Sure, the Sportage doesn’t quite live up to its sporty name - a Mazda CX-5 is more fun to drive and has steering that inspires a little more confidence. On the motorway, the Kia Sportage does a reasonable job of muffling annoying wind and tyre noise and all

Motoring Services Guide models get cruise control as standard so it’s pretty relaxing to drive for long periods. It’s especially stress-free if you go for a GT-Line S model - these get adaptive cruise control which brakes and accelerates for you to maintain a safe distance from other cars.

Performance and economy If you do lots of driving in town, the most affordable 1.6-litre petrol model with 130hp might be worth a look. It feels pretty sluggish, but Kia claims it’ll return 39.8mpg. You’ll probably see a figure closer to 35mpg in normal driving conditions, though.

A much better option - especially if you do a mix of city and motorway driving - is the more powerful 174hp turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol. It accelerates from 0-60mph almost two seconds faster than the 130hp model and feels much less strained when you put your foot down to overtake slowmoving traffic. It won’t cost significantly more to run, either - Kia claims it’ll return 36.2mpg compared with the 130hp version’s 39.8mpg.

What’s it like inside? The Kia Sportage interior is packed with more plush materials than you might expect to find in such an affordable family SUV. The broad dashboard gets a soft, squidgy plastic finish

with some neat mouldings designed to look like stitching along the top. Every model comes with a highresolution infotainment display as standard – ranging from a 7-inch unit in ‘1’, ‘2’ and GT-Line models to a larger 8-inch system in higher-spec versions. Mid-range ‘4’ versions come with leather seats, while top-spec GT-Line S models add some stainless steel trims on the sills and some extra glossy black plastic trim on the centre console.

Infotainment Every Kia Sportage comes with a touchscreen infotainment system mounted high-up on the dashboard. Entry-level ‘1’ cars get a 7-inch unit that’s fairly easy to use and pretty responsive - if not quite as speedy as the system in a Skoda Karoq. You also get DAB digital radio and Bluetooth connectivity as standard, but you have to pay extra on entry-level cars for sat nav. To make up for this, Kia’s fitted Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring across the Sportage range so you can use a variety of your phone’s navigation apps through the built-in screen instead.

MATT WARMAN MP Serving the people of Boston and Skegness 63 Wide Bargate, Boston Lincolnshire, PE21 6SG

Only 1% of the adult UK population have a Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) in place*. A significant number of people are therefore at risk of having no protection for their affairs and interests.

There are two kinds of LPAs. Type one is a Property and Financial Affairs LPA which covers running your bank accounts, investments, bills, and property. Type two is a Health and Welfare LPA which covers the type of healthcare and medical treatment you receive including living arrangements, day to day matters and life sustaining treatment.

matt.warman.mp @parliament.uk mattwarman.co.uk Warmanfor BostonSkegness

Putting an LPA in place removes any need for your family or loved ones to apply to the Court of Protection (COP) to gain control of your affairs, which is an extensive and strenuous task. There are some stark time differences between putting in place an LPA compared with the process involved in applying to the COP. It can take approximately three months to set up an LPA whereas it can take up to six months to put a COP in place. The lengthy time involved with COP matters can affect your family’s ability to immediately make decisions on your behalf and to look after your affairs, should you lose the capacity to do so yourself. If your LPA is already in place, your chosen individual(s) will immediately be able to make decisions for you and manage your affairs when you are unable to do so. It is important to note that unlike a Health and Welfare LPA which cannot be used until the individual loses capacity, a Financial LPA can be used as soon as it is registered whether capacity is lost or not, given that authority has been granted.

Yearly responsibilities may also be incurred for your loved ones if they are required to apply to the COP such as submitting annual reports to explain any money which has been spent and the decisions that have been made on your behalf. They may also be required to pay an annual fee, which you do not have to pay if you have an LPA. If you are considering making an LPA, our Team of Wills & Probate Lawyers offer a set of fixed and accessible fees for such matters whereas the fee for a COP matter is often into the thousands, with costs varying depending on the size and complexity of the Estate. Unlike COP matters, If you have an LPA in place you can be rest assured that your family will not have to pay any unexpected costs. *Office of the Public Guardian

Aries

Horoscopes

(March 21 - April 19)

If you are tempted to overspend, try to resist the urge. You will also still find yourself in demand and your opinions will be much sought after. Those close to you will need your help and you will need to be available for them.

Taurus

(April 20 - May 20)

Gemini

(May 21 - June 20)

Cancer

(June 21 - July 22)

Your patience could well be put to the test in this period. There could be a situation where you will need to forgive and forget, rather than harping on about something that has irritated you. Your emotions may be up and down but mentally you will remain strong and able to deal effectively with whatever may happen.

This could be a profitable period for those born under the sign of the twins. You will be confident enough to take risks where others wouldn’t dare. If you make investments this month, they may prove profitable in the future. Cancer charts show you may need to slow down and take more care of your health. If you are prone to skin eruptions (which many Cancerians are) your skin could be telling you to avoid junk foods and eat a more healthy diet.

Leo

(July 23 - August 22)

This is likely to be a steady period for all of you Lions. You are going to experience a certain amount of fulfillment where your career is concerned and there will be much satisfaction to be gained from doing well and achieving your goals.

Virgo

(August 23 - September 22)

You will be dealing with a lot of money-related issues during this period and your horoscope predictions suggest that any financial speculations you make will be fruitful. You will not indulge in impulsive spending; rather, you will be taking a more measured and careful approach to your finances.

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

You could subject yourself to some much-needed self-scrutiny during this period. If you are feeling the strain of working too hard, then take some time out. If a relationship is not working, then end it. During this time you can be as decisive as you like, as you are unlikely to make a bad decision.

Scorpio

(October 23 - November 21)

Watch out for muscle strain, muscle weakness and leg pain this month. You are likely to be physically restricted in some way. The affliction is only temporary, but it will mean that your physical development will be strong and you are likely to be very sensitive to others’ needs.

Sagittarius

(November 22 - December 21)

This period may find you needing to sort out minor issues in personal relationships. It would be beneficial to all concerned if both parties could listen to the other and act directly and quickly upon what has been said. Sagittarius folk may need to curb their idealism and learn to be more practical in their relationships.

Capricorn

(December 22 - January 19)

You may be feeling a little fragile - maybe because of work-related stress, family problems or simply because your work/life balance is out of kilter. Either way, those born under the earth sign of Capricorn could find alternative therapies very helpful.

Aquarius

(January 20 - February 18)

If you’ve been feeling a bit down in the dumps, maybe due to exhaustion, now is the time to put on a brave face and embrace all the changes going on around you. Everything has an upside and a downside. If you focus more on the positive, things will get better in the long run. Listen to a good friend’s advice.

Pisces

(February 19 - March 20)

You could feel in need of a time out so that you can relax and revive. If your body is tired through overwork, then allow it to rest. If your mind is racing, then allow yourself some downtime. If you feel in need of some general refreshment, take a short break from routine. It will rejuvenate you.
