Welcome... Hello,
And welcome to the very first edition of 2021. We’re now entering the 4th year of serving our town and villages with their very own town magazine - and we love it!! Firstly, the Hamper Giveaway Competition was hugely popular. Hundreds of entries came in and we want to thank each and every one of you who entered. John Kirk himself and Editor David held the draw on Monday December 21st. First prize went to Mrs Susan Rushton of Skegness and the runner up was George Millington from Burgh Le-Marsh. Congratulations to you both and please look out for more fantastic giveaways throughout the year.

New Year Resolutions How you can make a fresh, healthy start to 2021
he start of every New Year brings with it a lot of celebrations, love, hopes and, most importantly, resolutions - promises we make to ourselves only to break them later, more often than not. The beginning of a year seems like the best time to turn over a new leaf and start afresh. Here is a list of the most popular resolutions that people make each year - whether they keep them or not is another matter:
Volunteer: Making
Lose weight: Each year, especially after the giant Christmas binge-fest people start realizing that they need to start living healthier lifestyles. In fact, a lot of gyms offer promotional deals at the start of a year and it has been noted that the subscription and attendance rates increase by almost 60% each January, only to fall back to normal by February.
Save more: By the end of each month, we’re all faced
Drink less: Especially after the huge New Year festivities (and possibly the hellish morning after) drinking less seems
the world a better place is what we all dream of, and contributing to that effect is something we all hope to do. Spend time to teach an underprivileged child, be part of a neighbourhood cleanliness drive or get involved with a charity of your choice. However small our role is, it still makes a difference. with the greatest mystery of the world - “Where did my wages go?” Takeaways, parties and buying things that we don’t need mainly. Many people make this resolution with the aim of curbing their excesive spending habits.
Get organized: According to Feng Shui, if your home or workplace is cluttered, then so is your mind. Many of us will take this as a cue to de-clutter and be more organized.
Read more: Who doesn’t want to go to a party or other social event and talk at length about the books that they have recently read?
like the best idea ever. However, when you go back to work the next day or Saturday finally arrives, the “Best Idea Ever” may well turn into “Maybe Next Year”
Sign up for something new: The best part of starting something new is that it is always exciting and exhilarating. No matter what you do - whether it’s learning a new language or taking cooking lessons - it always gives you something to look forward to.
Stop smoking: This is what every smoker dreams of - to be magically rid of this life-consuming addiction and wake up in the New Year feeling healthy and cleansed. It is probably this hope which drives some to make thisparticular resolution each year. And it is the lack of foresight to follow this through which leadsto only 15% of people sticking to the resolution, even after 6 months. Better work-life balance: It’s said that the minute your personal life goes down the drain it means you have started doing well at work. However, most of us do not want to make that sacrifice because, after all, what is the point of a career when you don’t have the time for your loved ones?

Hence, the resolution to read more, increase your knowledge, widen your horizons and push your intellectual boundaries.
Keep your resolutions! The most important, and perhaps the most common and necessary one, is the resolution to keep your resolutions. If this is executed well, you’ll have nothing to worry about! To advertise text advert to 07868 433 225

5 Gardening Tips for the New Year
I
t has been shown that gardening can help to reduce stress. Of course gardening and being a gardener can be stressful! For example: there’s a snap frost forecast, you’re late home from work, it’s getting dark and you’re racing around trying to bring frost tender plants under cover or wrap them in horticultural fleece.
But then, there are many ways in which being a gardener makes you more able to deal with these stressful episodes. Having tips for dealing with them is one. Trying something different is another, which is where this list for five gardening tips for New Year comes in.
1. Compost Heaps and composting It’s possible to fInd the right composting method to suit that person and their garden. For example: l Cold composting in a bin or heap l Bokashi l Wormery l Hot composting l Composting trench Or you may already have a compost bin, but it’s not quite working right. With traditional cold composting, it is sometimes necessary to turn your compost. This is because the material can become compacted within the bin and then it doesn’t rot down properly.
2. Feed the birds Garden birds are the gardener’s friend. They will eat aphids, slugs, snails and
14

4. Plant a tree
Winter is the optimum time for planting bare root trees and shrubs. But you can plant container grown plants at any time of the year. What should you plant? How long is a piece of twine?!
Gardens soil borne pests. Ok, worms as well, but life isn’t perfect! Encouraging birds in to your garden improves the overall health of this habitat. The dynamics of the food chain do apply to even small domestic plots. And is there a gardener who doesn’t like the companionship of a robin when they’re digging? If you have a selection of bird feeders in various parts of the garden, now is a good time to check on them. Have any got to the point where they need to be replaced? Mouldy food encrusted at the base of a feeder is not good for the birds.
3. Clean your garden tools Specifically, clean your hand tools such as secateurs and spades. It can be quite a therapeutic task, cleaning and oiling. Escape to the garden shed if it’s not too cold or you have heating. Alternatively, light your chimenea or fire pit and listen to the crackling flames whilst you work. Keeping your gardening tools in good order is essential. Blunt secateurs will not cut the mustard, let alone the shrubs that need pruning.
For example: l If you’re short on space, plant a patio sized fruit tree in a pot - a blueberry bush or three. l More space? Go for a tree with style, such as Acer griseum, the snake bark maple, with its shiny red trunk. l Even more space? Plant a mini orchard. l Fancy an acid-loving rhododendron when you garden on alkaline soil? Choose a large pot and plant it in that.
5. Lawns Obviously not everyone can or would want to do away with their turf lawn altogether. But if you’re not a lover of mowing your lawn, strimming the edges, scarifying and raking you may like to consider reducing the area your lawn covers. Reduce your grass lawn area and reduce: l The amount of your time spent mowing using a petrol or electric mower. l Weeding and feeding with nonorganic chemicals. By doing this you could reduce the negative impact on wildlife and your gardening budget. And you may be able to trade in your petrol or electric mower for a push mower and improve your fitness levels.

The question of difficulty always arises when it comes to running indoors. People assume that running outside is harder than logging miles inside on a treadmill. However, research has proven that setting the treadmill to a 1% incline accurately reflects the same energy costs of running outdoors.

s it better to run on a treadmill or outside on the pavement? The truth is there are pros and cons to both. There are definitely some types of workouts you can do better or more efficiently on a treadmill. However, running on a ‘mill can create that aimless, never-ending ‘hamster wheel’ feeling for some. Here are the pros and cons of running on a treadmill versus running outside.
Although the treadmill might provide your joints with more cushion, you don’t get the added benefit of running on uneven terrain or pavement. Even if the ground outside might feel flat to you, it never truly is. Therefore, your foot and leg muscles are constantly making small adjustments to adapt to the changing surfaces. While treadmill running can help improve your overall fitness, it won’t mimic the real-life situations that are simulated through running outdoors.
Pro: It’s easier on your joints The smooth, cushioned belt is more forgiving than hard pavement or cement. Running on a treadmill can help reduce some of the impact on the joints and the body as a whole. This can be especially helpful when coming back from an injury. Make
sure you ease your way back to the road following an injury by alternating treadmill and outdoor runs.
Con: You don’t work as many muscles Because a machine powers the belt, the muscle mechanics differ when you run on the treadmill. Outside, you typically rely on your hamstrings to finish the stride cycle and lift your legs behind you. But on a treadmill, the propulsion of the belt does much of that work for you. You use your quads to push off, but your hamstrings aren’t firing as much as they would if you were running outdoors. Be sure that you’re also cross training to work the muscles on the back of your legs, including your hamstrings and glutes.
Pro: You can simulate race environments Many of the more advanced treadmills allow you to create your own unique course profile, which you can use to simulate the exact course you’re training for. Even if you’re not training for a race, you can switch up your workout by choosing a certain trail or terrain from around the world, depending on the options, to make you feel as though you’re half a world away.
Con: It’s boring There are no two ways about it: Running inside is boring. Even if you have the best playlist or you’re watching TV, it’s just too easy to look at that clock directly in front of you and see that only 30 seconds have passed since the last time you checked it. When running outside, the time naturally seems to move faster because you are literally covering more ground. Plus, you set a literal finish line for your run and see it getting closer and closer as you approach it.

xotic animals can be great pets, but usually require a specially equipped home. The truth is that most exotic animals are better off in their natural habitat or in a zoo, not in your home. If you are considering buying an exotic pet, there are some things you should consider before taking that final step. These tips will help you determine whether exotic animals as pets are right for you.
Just what is an exotic animal? Animals that aren’t commonly kept as pets are typically considered exotic. Dogs, cats, fish, birds, and hamsters are regular domestic pets. Animals that you see at the zoo, such as alligators, lions, tigers, monkeys, and very large snakes are all exotic pets.
Suites from £10 a day Call for details
Why would someone want an exotic pet? The reasons vary from person to person. Some people just like to be different. Some like the danger factor. Others are bored with common pets and want something more challenging and unique. And some people just love animals. However, as you’ll discover, love isn’t always enough when it comes to caring for exotic animals as pets.
Exotic pets can be hazardous to your health Although some exotic animals can seem similar to domestic pets. they can be much more dangerous. For example, smaller wild cats like ocelots or bobcats can pose a fatal risk to children in the home, according to the Royal Humane Society. This risk is like having a lion or tiger in the home! These animals are not bred or trained to be domestic. Exotic animals also carry and spread disease. The Royal Humane Society explains that exotic animals carry

While animal diseases pose a threat, a more common threat is injury from an animal’s bite. Non-domesticated animals are much more prone to biting adults and children regardless of their time spent in captivity. Wild animals also do not usually bond with their owners like a domesticated pet does. This means that even the people with whom the animal has daily contact are at a higher risk of being bitten. These bites can transmit disease and cause severe injuries and death in some cases. Exotic animals have not been bred to be domesticated, and they are essentially wild. Wild animals are driven by natural survival instincts that are much stronger than any short-term training can provide. These instincts can take over at any moment often to the surprise of the owner who thought their exotic pet was tame. Wild animals require many years and many generations to be domesticated. Keep in mind that the dogs and cats we enjoy as pets were domesticated thousands of years ago. Don’t be tricked into believing you can domesticate an exotic animal or its offspring in a few years.

diseases that are dangerous and even fatal to humans. Macaque monkeys commonly carry the Herpes B virus which can be fatal. Reptiles and amphibians can carry Salmonella, posing a threat in homes with children. Rabies can be found in many wild animals and is transmitted through saliva when a person is bitten.
Plumed Basilisk Basiliscus: A breed of iguana often kept as an exotic pet.
Find out the best and worst of having this kind of exotic pet. How much space will you need for this full-grown animal? How much food will they require? What about illness? Where do you take the animal in the event of the pet becoming sick?

Neighbourhood Corner
Dear Readers,
I am PC Becki Latto, the local Community Beat Manager for the Skegness area, taking up the role following Sallys’ promotion to Sergeant earlier this year. I work alongside the Neighbourhood Sergeant, a team of Police Community Support Officers and with other agencies tackling anti-social behaviour and community issues that arise.

Firstly I would like to thank Sally for her kind introduction in the last edition and the editor David for allowing me to take over where she has left off. Secondly, as we welcome in the New Year in these ever strange times, I would like to take this opportunity to let you know about the priorities that we continue to work on in the Neighbourhood Policing Team.
2. Speeding in the 30 MPH, especially along Burgh Road, Skegness, has also been targeted as a priority these last two months. Pcs and PCSOs have been carrying out speed checks, issuing appropriate advice or tickets when necessary to those choosing to break the speed limit. This saw 17 persons issued tickets for speeding in the 30 MPH limit and a further 20 stopped and advised. Patrols will be continuing this month and just a gentle reminder, in the icy or wet conditions this month it may be a good time to check you know your stopping distances!! There is a new exciting initiative coming in February to encourage the safe use of Lincolnshire roads, which I will be able to tell you more about next time. I shall finish off by wishing you all a healthy and happy

Stroll along the gently curving boardwalk past ornate timbered villas and stone-faced mansions to the jumble of fishermen’s homes that still form the old port.
Best of the hotels: Hotel Gran Bilbao This stylish hotel is situated 10 minutes’ walk from Bilbao Cathedral and the popular Seven Streets district.

Old Town, Zaragoza This modern design hotel in central Zaragoza is 150 metres from Plaza España and 9 minutes’ walk from La Seo Cathedral and from El Pilar Basilica.
Caesar Augustus, King Alfonso I and Goya all made their mark on Zaragoza, but they were eclipsed by the Virgin Mary, who appeared here to St James perched atop a jasper-stone pillar – which explains why Zaragoza is one of the holiest shrines in Spain. Peoplewatch in the magnificent Plaza del Pilar and do go to the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar to see, well, the pillar. Above all, explore El Tubo, the warren of medieval alleyways that provides some of the busiest nightlife in Spain.

Pottering in the verdant highlands to the southwest of San Sebastián, flocks of shaggy-haired Carranzana sheep produce milk for Idiazabal cheese amid knockout mountain scenery.

The new Mini Electric
A
S you’ve undoubtedly already guessed from the name, this is indeed a Mini than runs purely on electricity the first of its kind that you can walk into a dealership and buy.
And if you do that, you might be surprised to find that you’ll be spending less than you would on an equivalent petrol-powered Cooper S version, even though, with 181bhp, the Mini Electric is very nearly as powerful. That’s partly because it’s attractively priced by electric car standards, but also because you’ll get a grant of £3000 from the government to help. But before you rush to put your deposit down, it’s worth bearing in mind that one of the reasons the Mini Electric is temptingly priced is that it doesn’t have a very big battery. This limits the number of miles you’ll be able to do before plugging it in again. Does this make the Mini Electric less recommendable than its similarly priced rivals, including the Renault Zoe, Honda E and Peugeot e-208? Read on and we’ll tell you all you need to know.
Performance and drive One of the great things about electric cars is that they have just one gear, meaning seamless acceleration is on tap the instant you squeeze the accelerator pedal. And it’s this that
50
makes the Mini Electric feel even nippier than it is. Like all electric cars, when you lift off the accelerator pedal the Mini harvests energy that would otherwise be lost to feed back into its battery This process, known as regenerative braking, is fairly aggressive in the Mini, causing the car to slow down quite quickly. There’s also a choice of four driving modes: Sport, Mid, Green and Green Plus. As their names suggest, Sport sharpens up the accelerator response and gives you more of that instantly responsive electric-car feel, while Green requires you to push the accelerator pedal much harder for a good burst of acceleration, encouraging you to drive more gently. The Mini is relatively agile by electric car standards, feeling darty and changing direction without much body lean. It’s certainly feels sportier than a Renault Zoe or a Peugeot e-208.
Interior The Mini has an upmarket image and its interior lives up to that, with plenty of soft-touch plastics on the dashboard, as well as solid-feeling knobs, switches and stalks. It looks great, too, with a cheerful, retro design. The 5.5in digital screen behind the
Please mention Inside Skegness Magazine when responding to advertisements
steering wheel (in place of conventional instrument dials) makes it easy to see how much charge there is in the battery at a glance, as well as your speed. Visibility is surprisingly good, even when looking back over your shoulder, due to fairly slim pillars - and the Mini’s compact shape makes it easy to judge the car’s extremities. As such, it’s not a difficult car to park. To light the way at night, bright LED headlights come as standard, while adaptive headlights that dip automatically when another car is approaching come on range-topping Level 3 trim. As standard, the Mini Electric gets a 6.5in infotainment screen, with Bluetooth, a DAB radio, sat-nav and Apple Carplay smartphone mirroring. The system is controlled by twisting and pressing a small wheel between the front seats, a method that’s considerably less distracting when you’re driving than using a touchscreen.
Passenger & boot space Unlike the petrol Mini hatchback models, there’s no five-door version of the Electric, and this means getting into the back requires a bit of contortion. Once you’re in, you’ll find less head
room than in the regular petrol Mini, too. Boot space is exactly the same as in the regular Mini hatch. That means you’ll squeeze in more luggage than you would in a Honda E, but the Zoe is a still more practical choice. A two-level boot floor comes as standard as does a 50/50 split rear seat.
Costs Although official figures suggest the Mini Electric is capable of up to 145 miles on a full charge (this varies slightly depending on which alloy wheels you go for), you’ll have to drive very gently and avoid motorways to coax it that far. Charging the battery from empty using a normal 7kW home wall box takes 4hrs 12min, and a 0-80% top-up can be grabbed in just 36 minutes from a 50kW public CCS charger. The Mini is cheaper to buy than the Honda E and is priced roughly in line with the Renault Zoe. However, it’s predicted to hold onto its value better than both of those cars, making it a relatively sound investment in the long-term - especially when you factor in the free road tax and low running costs that electric motoring brings. if you can’t make it to a proper electric car charging point, you can also plug in to a regular three-pin domestic socket.

Ensuring a lasting memorial for your loved ones
W
ith 2020 proving to be a difficult year for many of us we have found that attitudes towards life and family have changed. Many customers have visited cemeteries and churchyards to tend to the graves of loved ones and noticed that they are in need of a little TLC, in our ordinarily busy lives there can be little time left to clean and maintain memorials. Alpha Memorials do not just provide new headstones but can clean and refurbish memorials which many
customers have thought to be beyond saving. There is a sense of achievement for us in restoring the memorials to their former glory, but it is also important to make sure that they are installed correctly to comply with current safety standards to ensure that they last for many more generations. From replacement vase inserts and simple levelling work to full refurbishments please get in touch to see how we can help.
