i I’m Rachel, a piano and vocal tutor here in Skegness. Formerly a dedicated music tutor at the Piano Academy for 11 years I am now venturing out on my own to continue providing top quality music tuition both online and in person. I’m also the very proud choir leader of the Just Sing Ladies Choir of Skegness which first formed in 2012. Music is my passion and I feel so lucky to be able to pass my knowledge and love of music onto others. Learning an instrument shouldn’t be a chore, it should be a fulfilling and enjoyable experience which is exactly what I like to ensure. Today I want to tell you why I strongly believe that music is so important in all our lives and how something as simple as singing can be so beneficial for health and happiness. I went to a Gospel Choir workshop last February run by the wonderful Dr Kathy Bullock PhD (US Gospel Music Expert) and this particular quote from her has stuck in my mind since: “If you can speak, you can sing” So yes, you CAN sing… Singing is one of the most accessible ways of making music. Some of us find it more natural than others, but we can all do it and our ancestors from all cultures around the world have been singing and making music for millennia! Now here is why you SHOULD sing… Singing daily for at least 10 minutes can relieve stress, clear sinuses, improve posture and improve your overall health by exercising your heart and lungs and it releases endorphins into

the body helping you to feel great. As a result, singing is a very effective form of mental and physical therapy, something of which I believe we all need right now. My first piece of advice when singing is to keep both mind and body relaxed and focus on breathing correctly. Tension in any part of the body can affect your vocal chords and breath control. For the correct posture try these steps: stand with your feet shoulder width apart, knees loose (not locked), hips central (don’t push them forwards or back), abdomen flat and firm but free to expand, chest comfortably held high, shoulders and arms down and loose, and chin level (imagine it’s propped on a shelf) Imagine a string running vertically through your body keeping your spine straight and tall. Breathing should be deep and from the lower lungs. You will have better control breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth. Feel your waist expand when you inhale and then relax in when you exhale. Many people get this action the wrong way round from bad habit so just imagine a balloon. When you fill a balloon with air it grows bigger and when the air escapes it will deflate. Getting the breathing right will help you sing with better support, control and aid towards much healthier singing. Being able to get in and out of the house, move around safely, access the bathroom, cook and go to bed all affect our dignity and wellbeing. If you’re starting to recognise that you can’t do all of these things safely, it’s time to make some improvements. I’ve seen that people often don’t know where to start and, understandably, they worry about cost.

There are all sorts of options to suit your budget. Find a supplier you trust who will help you understand what’s available. And it’s not only the big, recognised brands you see advertised in the national newspapers that can help. In fact, they’re usually the most expensive. Smaller, specialist companies will take time to understand your needs and do what they can to help, whatever your budget. That’s what I pride myself in doing.

OME has become central to everyone’s lives during the pandemic, but for older or less abled people the suitability of their home is particularly important.

There is financial help available for people with a qualifying condition. It’s called the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) – a means-tested grant to make changes in the home to help less able people lead more independent lives. The maximum payment is £30,000. Search ‘DFG gov uk’ on the internet or call your local council for more details. Grants aside, if you’re not sure what you need there’s a wonderful website I came across recently called Ask Sara (www.asksara.livingmadeeasy.org.uk). You select what you have difficulty with and it gives you advice and solutions

How to get rid of garden pests A Japanese beetles

s if weeds and weird weather weren’t bad enough, gardeners also have to face insect pests. Here’s a look at some of the most troublesome common garden pests - and how to eliminate them.

Aphids These 1/6-inch pear-shaped creatures pierce plant tissues to suck out sap. Affected plants often form puckered leaves, show stunted growth and can die without treatment.

How to get rid of aphids: Wash plants with a strong spray of water to dislodge aphids, or remove and destroy affected plant parts. Organic solutions include spraying with horticultural oil (petroleum- or vegetable-based oil used to smother insects), insecticidal soap or neem (insecticide made from a tropical tree by the same name). You can also buy lady beetles, which feed on aphids.

Slugs Slugs are slimy, soft-boddied mollusks, usually about an inch long and either brown or gray in colour. They’ll eat just about any garden plant, leaving unsightly holes in the foliage. While common in moist, humid climates, they’re more prevalent if the weather has been rainy.

How to get rid of slugs: Fill empty tuna fish cans with beer and place in the garden (slugs are

How to get rid of cutworms: Protect young seedlings with collars made from plastic drinking cups or cardboard rolls from toilet paper. You can also cultivate soil shallowly before planting and remove the curled up cutworms by hand (or let robins do the dirty work).

How to get rid of Japanese beetle adults: Shake them from plants into a jar of soapy water early in the morning, when they’re less active. You can also spray with insecticidal soap or use floating row covers (extremely lightweight fabric placed directly on plants to keep insects from laying eggs).

How to get rid of Japanese beetle grubs: Apply beneficial nematodes (microscopic worms that occur naturally in the soil) or milky spore (a bacterium). Be patient; both of these organic options take a couple years to build up in the soil and do their job.

Whiteflies These tiny sucking insects weaken and stunt plant growth and also leave behind a sticky honeydew that leads to fungal disease on leaves.

How to get rid of whiteflies: Blast them off plants with the hose, then coat plants with insecticidal soap, getting both the tops and undersides of leaves. Do this early morning or late evening, when temperatures are cooler. In lieu of insecticidal soap, you can substitute lemon-scented liquid dish soap, 1 tablespoon per gallon of water.

Keeping your pets in shape

s a pet owner, you need to know what weight your pet should be at for their breed and age, and you can get this information from your vet. Maintaining this weight means that your pet is in tip-top condition, meaning they can get the best out of an active life full of walks and fun. A healthy pet is a happy pet. Your cat or dog isn’t going to be very happy if it gets out of breath on short walks or is too big to play with its favourite toy - and if they get too big it can lead to health problems like diabetes, heart and liver problems which will seriously affect their longevity.

How do I keep my pet trim? Once you know your animal’s ideal weight you can begin to monitor and maintain it. Your pet’s diet is key ensure that they have the right kind of nutrition for their age and breed and select a food that is appropriate. If your dog needs to lose weight,

you can buy foods that are extra low in fat but no less tasty for your dog. Natural ingredients are better and many foods are free from additives and preservatives that can affect your pet’s health in other ways. Your pet needs just the right amount of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals to stay fit and healthy. Some owners still home cook their pet’s food, and that can sometimes be ok, but it’s very difficult to get the right balance and if your dog or cat is over (or under) their ideal weight, you might want to look at some purpose made-pet food. They have often been put together in partnership with leading vets and nutritionists to give just the right amount of everything, even for overweight pets. Most foods come with a feeding guide too and it’s best not to exceed it or give too many treats on top of it. Exercise is just as important. If your pet is overweight, just dieting will help a little, but combine it with exercise and your pet will be well on their way to a healthy weight.

If you have a dog it’s even easier - you can play too. Buy dog toys that promote activity and play with your dog like ball throwers, or once they have a lost a little, try some fly ball! It’s great fun for you and your dog and if you do it right you may even lose a few pounds yourself! Finally, when it comes to treats, the owner has to be disciplined - it’s tempting to treat your cat or dog with something extra tasty from the table, especially if they are there begging for it. While they might enjoy the taste, their body isn’t made to handle lots of foods that humans eat, leading to weight gain, diabetes and other problems. Instead, select a low-fat pet snack and promise yourself not to give them any more than the recommended amount. For a number of different reasons, Pet obesity is becoming a bigger and bigger problem in the UK. Keep your pet safe from the problems of being overweight by sticking to these tips and don’t be shy about asking your vet for extra help - a good vet will always do what is best for your pet.

Well, I shall begin with where I left off last month. Unfortunately as with so many plans people had made for this year, our exciting new road safety initiative launch has had to be delayed until later in the year, so I’m afraid I had better not spoil the suspense. This month we have welcomed back to the Skegness Neighbourhood Team, Inspector Colin Haigh. Inspector Haigh (pictured) has been a serving Officer in Lincolnshire Police for over twenty years and brings a wealth of experience back to Skegness.

Moving into the Spring our Neighbourhood Team will continue to prioritise speeding in the 30 MPH limit around the town and I would urge all readers to continue to support this, adhering to the speed limits in place.

The use of vehicles on the beach and in the SSSI is not permitted and is covered by Road Traffic Act. It may result in those responsible being issued with tickets, prosecuted or having their vehicles seized. All vehicles being used on a road or in a public place must be road legal, with the rider ensuring that they have complied with all requirements in respect of their use.

Police are going to be taking positive action against those who are found committing offences of this nature. I would urge readers to assist in our no tolerance approach, reporting those responsible and providing details so that they can be dealt with.

The Caring Touch... Allways Care began in 2001 following requests from visitors to Rayleigh House Residential Care Home run by Stephanie, Bryan & Luke Ghent. People asked us to provide the same high standard of care in peoples own homes to help them remain independent. Following our registration with the Care Quality Commission we quickly built up a dedicated group of carers many of whom still hold positions at Allways Care today. Our first clients varied vastly, from a lady in Burgh-Le-Marsh who needed her coal fire started each morning but was otherwise independent to a gentleman in Skegness who needed two carers to assist him four times each day with every aspect his personal care. Our goal has always been to enable people to safely remain independent in their own homes and provide them with the care and support they deserve. Originally, we used an office at our Care Home, it quickly became obvious that larger premises were needed as the demand for our services surged in those first few years. People wanted to be able to come and talk face to face about support they or a loved one needed. Since 2006 we have operated a fully staffed office on Drummond road in Skegness to enable our clients and their families to talk about their needs with knowledgeable, experienced, professionals. A lot of people do not know where to start when experiencing the challenges faced in old age. What help they can get? Where best to seek guidance? We have been able to help hundreds of families in times of need over the last 20 years and we are always grateful when we receive messages, cards etc revealing the positive impact our support has given not only to the person who we look after for but also their loved ones. Change has always been a fact of life when you work in care provision. Changes in best practice, changes in the way we are inspected and the expectations of governing bodies and the clients we provide care for. We are also working in partnership with local healthcare professionals who visit our clients. The challenges faced in the last year during the Covid-19 pandemic have seen some of the biggest changes in decades. Infection prevention has become a way of life. Our carers now wear protective equipment previously only seen in surgical theatres. Yet not one of them have complained. They know they are doing everything they possibly can to keep the person they are visiting safe.

As a result, none of our carers have contracted the virus or potentially passed it on. We are so proud of the way everyone has pulled together and kept going over the past twelve months. We are now supporting clients to receive their vaccines, taking them to vaccination centres or arranging for a vaccine at home. Many of our clients have not stepped foot outside of their front door since March of last year so our carers have been their much-needed contact to the outside world. While family members who have been unable to visit have had the reassurance that loved ones are safe and cared for. Currently we employ a team of 30 dedicated, trained, passionate carers but want to add new employees who share our values so we may grow slowly but surely to support more people asking for our services. As a small family run company, we deliver truly personalised care and support to our clients and can adapt quickly to their changing needs whilst developing a unique relationship with each person. Over the next twelve months we are utilising new technology to improve the engagement of our clients loved ones who perhaps do not live in the area. They want to see the level of care we deliver at each visit and how Mum or Dad is on that day. HE A-Class has become a huge seller for Mercedes in the UK, so this car matters. It’ll do well - the old one certainly had issues, but that didn’t stop it. This is pretty much an all-new platform, longer in wheelbase than before, but most of the changes are fundamentally evolutions. It’s stronger and lighter, and an extravagant 12cm longer. Funnily enough there’s little extra passenger room to show for the swelling. The same platform lives under the B-Class, CLA, CLA Shooting Brake, GLA and GLB. There are several engines; the 134bhp A180 and 161bhp A200 are both 1.3-litre petrol turbos that shut off two cylinders on light throttle. Then there’s an actual 2.0-litre engine, also all-new, and unrelated to the 1.3, in the 221bhp A250. Diesel options are heavily revised over the old A-Class and comprise the 114bhp A180d, 148bhp A200d and 187bhp A220d, while if you want something that’s less sensible, more sporty, you’ll be after the 302bhp AMG A35, which gets its own review right here. Or the mad 415bhp AMG A45, which you can read about by clicking on these blue words. There’s also a plug-in hybrid, which pairs the 1.3-litre petrol motor with a 15.6kWh battery for more than 40 (claimed) miles of electric range. All models start with active lanekeeping assist, collision warning and autonomous emergency braking. Nothing out of the ordinary there. A more advanced driver assist package is optionally available, including blindspot warning, active cruise control and lane-centring steering support.

A class act

The Mercedes A-Class normally at the worst possible moment, as you’re trundling through traffic and it drops you screaming into a low gear to the startlement of nearby pedestrians. The A250 has the stats of a junior hot hatch, but the chassis it’s attached to doesn’t let it complete the job. On motorways it cruises solidly, happy to munch miles with not too much tiring road vibration or tyre roar, though as you head expensively up the A-Class food chain you might forgive the noise it does make a little less easily.

What’s it like to drive?

On the inside

The A180d is quiet for a diesel, but painfully slow for open-road overtaking. The A180 and A200 petrols have a reedy-sounding 1.3-litre that also appears in Renaults and Nissans, but don’t let that put you off. It’s more than punchy enough to haul something as small as the A-Class around, even if it isn’t the most refined.

Two sets of steering-wheel controllers let the driver do anything on the screens. Driver or passenger can use a pad instead, resting their wrists on what looks like a leatherpadded accessible-toilet flush lever. Ergonomically it’s all pretty satisfactory once your fingertips have had time to learn it.

ways Mercedes has a demo app for customers’ iPads so they can try it out at home. The optional augmented sat nav which plays a video of the road ahead with big arrows pointing you down trickier to spot streets, like it’s a big computer game - is hugely impressive. Voice activation then. We asked the most common question in any car: “Are we nearly there yet?” It didn’t get it. But “when will we get there?” did produce our ETA, so that’s not bad. And destination entry by voice was good too. Anyway, it has ‘learning software’ so it might understand our first question better next time.

The seats are in Mercedes’ usual firm and strangely flat-feeling style, but again as in any good Mercedes you soon stop noticing them because they’re built for long-haul support.

Running costs Fuel consumption and CO2 figures are pretty mediocre. For comparable performance, even with an automatic gearbox, you can always find a Golf, Astra or 308 that’s more economical and lower in CO2. As to the lease and PCP payments, Mercedes usually does well here,

because the cars get good residuals. Speccing an A-Class is straightforward - there are lots of trim levels, but no lengthy list of individual options. Basic SE spec includes two seven-inch screens, connected navigation and voice activation, air, cruise, and autonomous braking that looks for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. Next comes Sport and Sport Executive, various different levels of AMG Line (Executive, Premium, Premium Plus) and the top-spec Exclusive Edition and Exclusive Edition Plus.

Verdict The A-Class, especially with the enormo-screen option, has the potential to be a feelgood car. It’s solid, quiet if you don’t nail it, smooth-riding if you spec carefully, well-made, safe. It doesn’t pander to the traditional road-test criteria. It has some real wow factor with the connectivity, which to some people is a greater priority than any of that ‘handling’ palaver. If you look at the way most people drive, the A-Class probably does what will make them happy.

Life in lockdown at the age of 91 Julie Symcox, co-founder of AHM Installations, tells us how life has changed - both for her and her 91-year old father, Ray - during lockdown. don’t like to see anyone struggle. I’ve worked as a nanny and nurse, in residential care homes and as a Samaritan. We now run an accessible bathrooms business.

I do miss it. And I miss driving. I’ve not driven because I’ve not needed to, and I worry about getting back into it.” We talked about the future. “I hope the vaccination becomes more available, quickly,” he said. “It would be nice to get out and about more.”

We’re lucky to live next door to my 91-year-old father, Ray. We’ve always been a close family but Dad and I became closer when Mum sadly passed away in 2013.

Dad is lucky to have close family around him, but I know that lots of people aren’t so lucky and they struggle at home with everyday tasks. My heart goes out to them. The pandemic has made it harder in lots of ways.

I was worried the pandemic would leave Dad feeling isolated as he lives on his own. But luckily we’ve been able to ‘bubble up’ - so we see each other every day and he helps to look after our dog, Bobby.

We talked about how Dad has found the pandemic, and like the rest of us there have been ups and downs: “When the pandemic started, the first few weeks were alright,” Dad said. “It was so quiet; you could hear the sound of birds. It felt very restful. “I’ve kept busy around the house and garden. I’m head cook and bottle washer so I don’t have any spare time! I do miss some things though,” he admitted. “I miss the weekly luncheon club at the village hall. I haven’t seen friends since March. And I miss going to the pub on a Friday.” Very sadly my Auntie Dorothy - Dad’s 96-year-old sister - died this year and Dad couldn’t visit her while she was in hospital or go to the funeral. “That wasn’t very nice,” he said.

My brother Rob and I took it in turns to get Dad’s food shopping. Then in mid-December Dad and I decided to go to Aldi together for the first time. “That was the first time I’d gone out of the village,” he said. “The family have helped so I’ve not gone without, but To advertise text advert to 07868 433 225

How to take care of your ears earing loss cannot always be prevented - sometimes it's just part of getting older. But hearing loss due to exposure to loud noises is completely avoidable. There are some simple things you can do to help stop loud noises from permanently damaging your hearing, no matter how old you are.

Avoid loud noises The best way to avoid noise-induced hearing loss is to keep away from loud noise as much as you can. Generally, a noise is probably loud enough to damage your hearing if: l You have to raise your voice to talk. to other people you cannot hear what people nearby are saying. l It hurts your ears. l You have ringing in your ears or muffled hearing afterwards. Noise levels are measured in decibels (dB): the higher the number, the louder the noise. Any sound over 85dB can be harmful, especially if you're exposed to it for a long time. To get an idea of how loud this is: l Whispering - 30dB l Conversation - 60dB l Busy traffic - 70 to 85dB

- 90dB to music at full volume through headphones - 100 to 110dB l Plane taking off - 120dB

Protect your hearing during loud events and activities

Take care when listening to music

To protect your hearing during loud activities and events (such as at nightclubs, gigs or sports events): l Move away from sources of loud noises (such as loudspeakers) l Try to take a break from the noise every 15 minutes l Give your hearing about 18 hours to recover after exposure to lots of loud noise l Consider wearing earplugs - you can buy re-usable musicians' earplugs that reduce the volume of music but do not muffle it

Listening to loud music through earphones and headphones is one of the biggest dangers to your hearing. To help avoid damaging your hearing: l Use noise-cancelling earphones. or headphones - do not just turn the volume up to cover up outside noise. l Turn the volume up just enough so you can hear your music comfortably, but no higher. l Do not listen to music at more than 60% of the maximum volume - some devices have settings you can use to limit the volume automatically. do not use earphones or headphones for more than an hour at a time - take a break for at least 5 minutes every hour. Even just turning down the volume down a little bit can make a big difference to your risk of hearing damage.

Take precautions at work If you're exposed to loud noises through your work, speak to your human resources (HR) department or occupational health manager. Your employer is obliged to make changes to reduce your exposure to loud noise, for example, by: l Switching to quieter equipment if possible l Making sure you're not exposed to loud noise for long periods l Providing hearing protection, such as earmuffs or earplugs Make sure you wear any hearing protection you're given.

Get your hearing tested Get a hearing test as soon as possible if you're worried you might be losing your hearing. The earlier hearing loss is picked up, the earlier something can be done about it. You might also want to consider having regular hearing checks (once a year, say) if you're at a higher risk of noiseinduced hearing loss, for example, if you're a musician or work in noisy environments.
