Inspiring more to learn how to draw and paint With Glyn Plumb - whatever your age, whatever your experience. In my weekly Thursday morning art groups at the Methodist Hall in Algitha Road, Skegness, I have been demonstrating various step-by-step art projects. These included watercolour landscapes and seascapes, drawing exercises and a sunset woodland scene in acrylics. I am currently tutoring and demonstrating various pen and wash techniques and exercises, leading on to portraits in this inspiring medium, followed by watercolour portraits to give an overview on how the techniques vary with each. We held our annual two-day residential workshop at the Southview Hotel in August, which was well attended, with many students coming back year after year (and some bringing along their partners for the short break at the seaside!). On the
first day, with the aid of our camera, projector and screen, I demonstrated watercolour flowers with a difference, followed by a demonstration of how to paint with gouache on the second day and proceeded to paint donkeys in this very different medium. I also ran the first of two beginner’s acrylic workshops in Skegness this month to cover and demonstrate the basics of using acrylic paint. As part of the workshop each student received a substantial amount of art materials to create a finished painting to take home. These smaller workshops allow me to give plenty of individual attention to everyone to enable them to overcome any problems they may encounter when using a new medium for the first time.
permanently, and I am now looking to arrange more of these workshops on this subject in the not too distant future, details of which will be found on my website when finalised. For further info and examples please visit my website www.glynsartforlife. com or contact me on 07941024285 (Glyn Plumb, Artist/Illustrator, Art Tutor - Glyn’s Art for Life)
In all classes and workshops I demonstrate step-by-step at a pace that everyone can follow. Many students are very surprised at how much their confidence is growing and how proud they are of their completed works of art. Regarding another unique aspect of art, I have run a number of psychic art workshops, including a couple in the Skegness area before moving here

Where to go for 9 1 Spain’s best 0 2 s y Holida winter sun A
s the winter draws closer and the weather turns miserable it’s hard not to dream of blue skies and sunnier climates. If you dread the thought of a cold, wet, miserable, winter, or it’s so grey outside that you think the sun might never some back, don’t let it get you down. It’s just a short flight to Spain and there are so many places there that offer a bit of sunshine in the wintertime. Why not treat yourself to a sunny citybreak or beach holiday in Spain? Europe is not renowned for its winter sun options but if you choose wisely you can head to one of the warmest parts of Spain and enjoy the great weather. This guide will show the five best winter sun places in Spain - the best areas to visit during December to pretty much guarantee some sun.
Tenerife Tenerife is the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, which are situated to the West of North Africa. There are two airports on Tenerife and you can get some great flight and holiday packages. It’s a very popular choice for winter family holidays as it offers a great allyear round climate. There is a varied and interesting terrain on the island, which means there is lots of things to see and do. You can hike the amazing volcanic, lunar landscape of the Mount Teide National Park or head to the Aqualand waterpark. Spend the afternoon on one of the many golf courses or enjoy lunch at the stunning blue flag Playa Fanabe. You can choose from a wide range of restaurants for dinner or party the night away in Playa de los Americas. The local seafood dishes are delicious and lots of the traditional charm can be found around the old fishing ports. The average temperature for December is
17°c and the sea temperature is 21°c perfect for swimming!
Marbella Marbella is a town on the Southern coast of Spain known as the Costa del Sol. It’s South west of Malaga and about 45 minutes drive from Malaga airport. It’s famous for attracting glamorous celebrities and has wellknown areas like Puerto Banus, where you can spot super yachts and sports cars by day and go to the glitzy bars and clubs by night. The beaches are lovely long, stretches of golden sand. All along the coastline here you can walk the beautiful palm tree lined promenade, enjoying the beach views. Some of the smaller beach bars will close during the winter months but the town of Marbella is still very much alive with a wide choice of cafés and restaurants. December’s average temperature is 12°c and you can expect a good six hours of sunshine.

Fuerteventura Fuerteventura is one of the lesser known Canary Islands but it has some of the most gorgeous beaches. The huge sand dunes lead on soft white flat beaches and crystal clear turquoise water. There are more than 150 beaches on the island and the widest stretch can reach up to 30km across! Fuerteventura is popular for surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing and every year a windsurfing speed event is held here. You can take a boat trip to the nearby Lanzarote and spot geothermal activity on the volcanic rocks and watch lava come through the craters. You can also take a wild dune buggy ride or visit the local zoo, Oasis Park. Towns are a little far apart, but there are some lovely hotels where you can get dinner or hire a car to explore the Island and try more local food. The average temperature in December is a high 19°c and you can expect just three days of rain all month!
Seville’s Puente de Isabel II
Costa Tropical The Costa Tropical is on the coast of Southern Spain between Costa del Sol and Costa Almeria. It’s in the province of Granada and is only a one-hour drive from Granada airport. The Costa Tropical is much quieter than its neighboring Costas. As such, it’s far less crowded and touristy. It’s mostly a collection of small towns and villages surrounded by agricultural land. It’s known for its high number of farms producing exotic tropical fruits like mangos, avocados, bananas and guava. There are a number of pretty coastal towns here that many would pass by on the drive to Granada, but it’s well worth a visit to sample the local fruits, explore the history of the area and relax on the beach. Here the beaches are divided into small unspoilt sheltered coves. You are also within easy reach of the Sierra Nevada, a rugged mountain range. It’s the highest in Europe after
Granada’s Alhambra Palace
the Alps and is perfect for skiing, snowboarding, hiking and mountain biking.
Seville Seville is the capital of the Andalucía area of Spain. It’s a city crammed full of history with its churches, monuments and Moorish buildings. It’s also known for a buzzing nightlife of flamenco and tapas bars. You will find one of Europe’s biggest Cathedrals here, with great views over the city. Other famous sights are the wonderful Alazar Palace and Plaza de España plus the oldest and most important bull ring, the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza. You can tour the bullring to learn about the history of this old Spanish tradition. You can spend the days exploring the old city and admiring the architecture, and evenings soaking up the lively atmosphere, bar hopping and sampling the local delicacies. The average temperature in December is 12°c. As it’s unbearably hot during the summer, winter is a great time to visit.

The top picks for your Autumn vegetable garden Mid-to-late summer is the time to plant autumn-harvested vegetables. Many springharvested vegetables can also get a second chance in the autumn, and some are even better when matured in the cooler temperatures later in the year.
Pumpkins
beets are maturing will produce sweeter beets. They can handle some light frost and will grow all the way up until the first hard freeze. Beetroot stores well in the refrigerator or can be pickled or canned.
Gardens
Not many vegetables say ‘autumn’ like pumpkins do. They come in a huge range of colors and sizes, but the best varieties for eating have thicker flesh and thinner skin, like ‘Baby Pam’ or ‘Long Pie’. Pumpkins need room to roam, as their vines can reach up to 30 feet. They can be grown on trellises to gain more square feet of growing space.
There are many different kinds, but we recommends acorn, spaghetti, butternut, buttercup and hubbard squashes. These are best started indoors as seed and put out midsummer. Like pumpkins, they can take up a lot of space, so try growing them on trellises.
Broccoli
Carrots
Broccoli seedlings that are started in late summer aren’t subjected to random freezes that spring-starts might be. Once they are more mature, they can handle a light frost, but should be harvested before the first hard freeze. They take a little longer to mature, so it’s best to start seeds a little earlier and transplant mid-summer.
Like beetroot, carrots that mature in the cooler autumn soil will be sweeter, with orange types being the sweetest. Carrots will store up to 3 months in the refrigerator, so a good harvest will last you all winter. Don’t rush pulling them, as they are best when allowed to fully mature.
Winter squash Easy-to-store winter squashes hold their vitamin value when stored at cool temperatures for months.
18
Beetroot When starting beetroot in the summer, they may need some shade cover to get started, but the cooler soil temperatures in autumn when the
Brussel sprouts Another vegetable that is best when grown in the autumn, sprouts will commonly be the last veggie standing as fall turns to winter. Harvest from the bottom up, as they will continue to grow from the top. Plant marigolds and nasturtiums nearby to help repel cabbage moths and aphids.
Potatoes Grow fast-maturing varieties from certified seed potatoes. Shop-bought potatoes are usually treated with growth inhibitors and may carry diseases when planted. Avoid planting in beds where other nightshades have grown in the last 2 years, such as tomatoes, peppers or other potatoes. Also avoid planting next to cucumbers, pumpkin and squash.
Parsnips These root vegetables should be planted directly into the garden. They can be slow to germinate, but can be started in a damp paper towel. Dig them out before the ground freezes and they’ll stay fresh in the refrigerator throughout the winter.

Health
The seven most overrated health foods
T
he word ‘superfood’ is thrown around a lot these days, but in many instances, health claims made about certain foods are not all they’re cracked up to be. So before you go stocking up your fridge with the latest expensive food fads that claim to make you a healthier person, take a look at these overrated foods.
Goji Berries One area where goji berries outshine other fruits is in price, but in terms of nutritional value, they rank pretty much alongside any other berries. Little research has been done, however, to prove that the goji berry is better than any other berry for maintaining good health. Stick to some of the more widely available berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries) to get the same health benefits for a fraction of the cost.
Egg Whites
Acai Berry Juice Celebrities and health magazines have been raving about the benefits of these little purple fruits for years, but is acai berry juice really worth all of the hype? According to research... not really. Despite some of the health claims made, studies have shown that acai juice is pretty average in comparison to other fruits. In fact, acai berry juice was found to be lower in antioxidants than blueberry juice, pomegranate juice and even red wine.
Agave Nectar Agave nectar has been hailed as the healthy alternative to sugar. While it’s true that agave nectar has a low glycemic index, it is still high in the simple sugar fructose. As fructose occurs naturally in food such as fruit, many people consider it ‘healthy,’ but when consumed in high amounts, fructose can become difficult for your liver to process and it can cause longterm effects on your blood sugar levels. If a sugar substitute sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.
If you separate the yolk from the white of the egg, then you’re essentially cutting out the best part. Egg yolks do contain dietary cholesterol which is why some people avoid them, but your body actually needs cholesterol to repair and build cells. And while it’s true that leaving out the yolk will cut the calorie count, you’ll also be missing out on most of the nutrients found in an egg including protein, iron, vitamins A, D, E, B12, selenium and folate amongst other things. So we’re not saying don’t eat egg whites, we’re simply saying, eat the yolks too.
Granola
Yoghurt
Smoothies
Some yoghurt can be healthy, but unfortunately flavoured yoghurts don’t fall into this category as they often contain a lot of added sugar and artificial sweeteners. Natural yoghurt is a good source of calcium and it can be a great way to get probiotics into your diet. If you want the health benefits of yoghurt, then stick to plain, full-fat unsweetened varieties, and add your own fruit if you’re looking for a sweet topping.
Granola might sound like the ideal breakfast option, loaded with oats, grains, dried fruit and nuts, and granted it does have some health benefits, but some shop bought granola is much higher in calories than people realise. A mixture of sugar and oil is used to hold the pieces of granola together and some packets of the cereal include added pieces of chocolate. Make the swap from granola to a simple bowl of porridge or muesli to cut the high calories and reduce your sugar intake. A drink made from fruit might sound like the perfect solution to all of your health woes, but while smoothies can be a nutritious option when made correctly, some shop bought versions are full of refined sugars and syrups. As with any food, fruit should also be enjoyed in moderation, so while one smoothie a day will help your body get the vitamins and nutrients it needs, three or four a day will drastically raise your sugar intake. Fitness How to measure your heart rate M
easuring your heart rate using a heart rate monitor is a good way to gauge the effectiveness of your workout because as you strengthen your body through exercise, you also strengthen your heart. Measuring the rate of your heart during exercise can help you determine when you’re pushing your body too hard or need to push it harder to achieve the level of fitness you are seeking.
In order to understand how to condition your body by analyzing your heart rate, it’s important to understand the four different types of heart rate. They are as follows.
Resting heart rate
Your resting heart rate is the rate that your heart beats per minute during periods of the day when you are most relaxed. Your RHR can be measured after you get out of bed or during a period of the day when you’re sitting or relaxing comfortably. Although heart rates vary between individuals, the average RHR for a man is between 60 to 80 beats per minute. The average for a woman is between 70 to 90. An adult in good shape can have an RHR of in the low 60’s while an
unhealthy RHR can be as high as 100. A very well conditioned athlete can have an RHR in the 40’s. To get an accurate measurement of your resting heart rate by using a heart rate monitor you should take measurements at different rested periods of the day over the course of a week - and then average them out.
Maximum heart rate Your maximum heart rate is the peak amount of beats that your heart has the potential to reach. You’ll reach your MHR when you’ve pushed your heart as far as it can go during an aerobic workout. It’s extremely difficult to accurately measure your MHR. Experienced endurance athletes do so at fitness laboratories using an electrocardiogram (ECG). To get an idea of your maximum heart rate, subtract your age from the number 220. With this formula, if you’re 35, your MHR would be 185. This formula is not an exact science and does not ensure complete accuracy. Furthermore, it’s important to understand that it can be dangerous attempting to measure your maximum heart rate, as you can cause serious damage to your body if you push it too hard.
Training heart rate Your training heart rate is the rate that you maintain during aerobic workouts in an effort to improve fitness. In order to properly train with a heart rate monitor, you should work out at a steady, rhythmic pace. This will allow you to capture consistent measurements. The right number to train at depends on your fitness goals and is widely debated among professionals. To promote general fitness you can train as low as 50 percent or as high as 70 percent of your maximum heart rate. For more experienced athletes, it’s argued that this number can be above 70 percent and as high as 80 percent of your MHR. The lower numbers are recommended for beginners. You’ll likely reach the 50 - 60 range while briskly walking, and the 60 to 70 range while running for a steady period of time.
Recovery heart rate It’s important to give your body proper rest after a workout. Your recovering heart rate is the rate that you should bring your heart down to after a workout. A good number to go by is 20 beats within your pre-workout resting heart rate.

To help your pet pick up these skills, it’s important to train your kitten from an early age and as soon as possible.
● Use a food-based reward as
use to teach your cat what to do (such as “sit”) by speaking clearly and confidently, and reinforcing with positive praise – for example “sit, good, sit”. reinforcement during kitten training. After all, wouldn’t you be more willing to work harder if you know there’s a tasty treat in it for you? ● Using a “clicker” or soft sounding
bell when you give a treat to your cat will help them to associate that sound with a reward, so should learn to perform a task just by hearing that sound in the future.
Teaching your kitten social skills Training kittens starts with their social skills - the more they are exposed to at a young age, the less will shock or surprise them as they get older. Kittens will be at their least fearful between the ages of 3-7 weeks, so will be more open to and accepting of new experiences and changes in their environment. After this age kittens will become more cautious, so it’s important that your breeder or rescue shelter introduces your pet to as much as possible before you collect them, ideally between 8-13 weeks old (depending on their breed and breeder). Try some of these tips to help your kitten develop even further: ● Invite a variety of friends to your
home to help your kitten get used to all sorts of different people - different ages, genders, heights, hair colour and more! ● If you don’t have children, invite
some along, making sure you let them know to take care around the kitten, especially when they meet them for the first time. ● You may know someone with a cat-
friendly dog. If so, ask them to bring their pet to meet your kitten. The dogs must be well trained and able to “stay” - even in the excitement of meeting a new friend! ● While training your new kitten, take
them out in the car for short trips to get used to car travel from a young
● Train your kitten or cat before
mealtimes, as a food reward won’t be so enticing on a full stomach. At the same time, don’t ‘starve’ cats to make them eager to learn; a hungry cat can quickly lose their patience! ● Keep training session consistent,
with the same trainer (either you or a professional, if you’re using one), cues, signals, and rewards. ● Wait until your cat has mastered
one skill before trying to teach them another, or it may be too much for them to take in. age. Offer a special treat when you return to the house so that they associate travelling with a positive reward.
How to begin kitten training Once your cat has mastered basic social skills, you can begin training your kitten to learn other things. Before you start, it’s advised to have a full check-up at the vet to make sure your pet doesn’t have any underlying medical conditions that could cause issues during training, such as joint or hearing problems. Hopefully your cat will be perfectly healthy, so you can start to teach them a few useful tricks. These general pointers can help you and your cat get the most out of your sessions:
● Try to fit a 10-minute long training
session in every day - sporadic sessions may not get you the results you want and could confuse your cat. ● Be patient! Training is bound to take
time, so encourage your pet in each session with lots of positive praise and rewards for good behaviour. If your cat does something wrong, use a firm “no” before directing them to something else. For example – if they are knocking items off a surface, say “no” and dangle a toy for them to play with instead. Now you know the basics of how to train your kitten or cat, you can move onto how to teach them specific tasks.
Let the fun begin! Part two in the next issue...

Think you don’t need a Will? Think again! By Travan Chandler at Hodgkinsons Solicitors, Skegness
Did you know that 53% of the UK population do not have a Will? This means that millions of people in the UK are putting their assets at risk by putting their Estate in the hands of the Law. When someone dies without a Will in place, the rules of intestacy apply. This is a strict set of rules in which the Court will abide by to determine who should inherit your Estate, such as immediate family. It is important to be aware that under the rules of intestacy, only married or civil partners and a limited number of other close relatives will inherit from your Estate. If no loved ones are identified within this criteria, your Estate would go to the reigning monarch. It is possible that people choose not to make a Will due to a number of contributing factors such as: ● Believing that their family can simply divide their Estate as per their unwritten wishes. ● Feeling like they are too young or healthy to need a Will. ● Thinking that they do not own enough assets. ● Thinking that making a Will is too time consuming or complicated. The reality is, however, that everyone aged 18 and over should make a Will, regardless of health or their value of assets. There are many benefits to making a Will, in fact, your Will is said to be one of the most important documents throughout your lifetime for both yourself and your family. Making a Will and keeping it up to date is the only way to ensure your chosen family members, loved ones, friends and charities benefit exactly as you want them to. Creating a Will not only manages the distribution of your Estate but also puts a variety of other aspects in to place. Aside from naming Beneficiaries within your Will, you can also name Guardians for your children, set up a Trust(s) to protect any inheritance you are giving out and name Executors who will manage your affairs after your death. At Hodgkinsons our Solicitors will ensure you have addressed every detail so that you get complete peace of mind knowing your affairs are in safe hands. Unfortunately, life circumstances can change at any point, so having a Will in place will ensure that family members do not feel additional stress during an already emotional time. Our Wills and Probate Solicitors understand that throughout any point of your life, making a Will can seem daunting, which is why Hodgkinsons Solicitors offer a supportive and friendly service with straightforward and clear guidance through every step of the process. When you have a Will, it is important to keep it updated so that it reflects your current situation. We recommend that you review your Will every five years. If you would like to discuss making or amending your Will, contact our specialist Solicitors by calling 01754 897150 or visit our offices to book an appointment.

The EQC SUV: A Mercedes first and an electric vehicle second T he new all-electric Mercedes EQC SUV has arrived in the UK, but is it a match for the Jaguar I-Pace, Audi e-tron and Tesla Model X?
Mercedes has set aside 10 billion Euros (£9.2bn) for a plug-in vehicle push that will lead into the mid 2020s, and it’s promised that this cash will result in 10 all-electric Mercedes and Smart models hitting the road before the end of 2022. Key to this will be a brand-new, purpose made all-electric platform being built in a brand-new factory. But before that happens, the firm’s first pure battery-powered effort to take its place in the newly minted ‘EQ’ subbrand of electrified Mercedes is this: the EQC. It’s in UK dealerships now.
58
The technology The platform has been adapted to house an 80kWh battery, while one electric motor drives the front axle, and another the rear. Total system power stands at 403bhp, with torque measuring a colossal 760Nm, accessed the moment you hit the
pedal. However, that’s a defining characteristic of anything large, powerful, expensive and electric. What’s immediately apparent about the EQC the moment you climb aboard is a feeling of familiarity. You’re greeted by the usual dual-display infotainment and digital dial setup lifted from cars using Merc’s latest MBUX infotainment system, while the centre console and switchgear you’ll find on it is identical to the latest GLC. As ever, the infotainment presents a bit of a missed opportunity. The MBUX system is pinpoint sharp, feature packed and loads rapidly, but it’s a complex system to navigate - you may find yourself relying more on the Mercedes voice control functions.
Please mention Inside Skegness Magazine when responding to advertisements
Interior The cabin feels a bit more traditional than some of the competition, and is only differentiated from other Mercs by some new vents, copper accents, and a large, sweeping panel of lines running from the doors and around the back of the dashboard. Quality is typically Mercedes, but it isn’t the most spacious car in this segment – and some of the synthetic materials on show won’t impress brand connoisseurs. The centre console is quite fat and eats into the front footwells, while sitting in the back reveals headroom is at a premium, nipped away by the EQC’s aerodynamically friendly low roofline. From the driver’s seat, visibility could be better, too. The rear window is slim and raked, and the side windows aren’t the biggest either. Boot space sizes up at 500 litres - not the largest in the segment, but enough for most family needs.
Driving experience Driving the EQC is much like any other
electric car this powerful and ultimately, this heavy. It tips the scales at 2,495kg, but hit the throttle hard from standstill in Sport mode and you’ll still find that trademark all-electric hit of hard, instant acceleration that you’ll come back to time and time again. All electric cars are quiet, but the Mercedes is quieter still, the smooth shape slinking through the air with little fuss, the road noise and motor whine well isolated. It rides very well too, soaking up the biggest bumps and potholes with ease. The only thing you’ll notice is a little body movement and wobble on undulating surfaces, which can be put down to the sheer sprung mass. One quirk of the EQC is the Maximum Range mode, which makes use of the navigation system and on-board cameras to read the road ahead and provide assistance to any driver trying to wring the most out of the 80kWh battery pack. It’s a mode many owners may grow tired of though, as the endless interventions don’t seem like a worthwhile trade off for a
slight increase in range. The Eco and Comfort modes are this car’s bread and butter, and for the most part, the EQC will run on the front axle’s electric motor only.
Charging The EQC isn’t quite as technologically advanced as the Audi e-tron, which can support 150kW charging if you can find a station capable of that output. Nor will it match a Tesla Model X plugged into a Supercharger. At a 110kW charger, Mercedes claims a respectable 10 to 80 per cent recharge time of 40 minutes.
Verdict Sensible is how you’d describe the new Mercedes EQC, given only a word to do so; it’s a Mercedes first and an electric vehicle second. So while it’s an EV current Mercedes owners will fall into with ease, it might not wow those captivated by the thought of electric car ownership. It’s still got heaps of performance, quality and comfort, though, and a very commendable real world range. It should be on your radar.

It’s a Knock-Out for Hodgkinsons Solicitors The team at Hodgkinsons Solicitors, known as Hodgkinsons Heroes, took part in ‘It’s a Knockout’ on Sunday 7th July 2019 to raise vital funds for St Barnabas Hospice Lincolnshire. On Sunday, 12 competing corporate teams took part in a number of foamy inflatable games to score points. The obstacles were both challenging but entertaining, and the day of fundraising certainly provided lots of fun and laughter amongst the teams.
Throughout this day of fundraising, Hodgkinsons Solicitors have pledged to raise £800.00! At Hodgkinsons we are proud that our employees are dedicated to giving up their time and making an effort to raise as much money as possible for this very deserving cause. Cameron Hill, Trainee Paralegal within the Residential Property Department commented: “At Hodgkinsons it is within our corporate culture to be dedicated to raising as much money as possible for St Barnabas, a very
deserving and local charity. I always enjoy raising money for St Barnabas as they have so many opportunities to fundraise in such fun ways, like It’s a Knockout.” Even though the event is over, there is still time to fundraise! If you would like to sponsor Hodgkinsons Heroes head to: https://www.justgiving.com/teams/ HodgkinsonsSolicitors
It’s a Knockout was just one of many fundraising events that Hodgkinsons have taken part in this year to raise money for St Barnabas Hospice Lincolnshire. St Barnabas have been Hodgkinsons’ charity of choice for the previous three years due to the dedicated care and invaluable service they offer. By fundraising for the charity, Hodgkinsons Solicitors can contribute to the annual running costs of the charity, allowing them to continue providing free palliative care to those in Lincolnshire who are living with a terminal or life limiting illness.

Tech talk More of the best smart home gadgets Continued... Each of the devices here has its own smartphone app so you can control it remotely. Most work with any smartphone using their dedicated apps, but some, Eve products for instance, only work with Apple gadgets. For the best results, it’s worth having one of the systems that can control the gadgets directly. Apple, Google and Amazon have smart speakers which can hear you across the room and can be controlled by voice.
when it senses someone walking past it. Works with Apple, but only through the Nest iPhone app.
Eve Energy: £44.95
Nest Protect: £109 Compatible systems: Amazon, Google This is the most elegant smoke and carbon monoxide alarm you’re likely to see. It’s a smart sensor too, as it can tell the difference between smoke and steam.
Eve Button: £44.95 Compatible systems: Apple A smart home is all very well, but sometimes people prefer an actual button to press. This portable switch is a great solution. You configure it to do certain tasks and button presses achieve them. So, for instance, a single press might turn on all the lights in the living room, a double press could turn on the kitchen lights and a long press could be the last thing you do in the evening, so the button turns off all the lights downstairs, locks the front door and switches on the lights in the bedroom.
Nest Hello: £229: And instead of the shrill and unpleasant noise most smoke alarms make, this one speaks a warning before the alarm proper goes off. It alerts your phone, too. It comes in two versions, wired and battery-powered. If you have the battery version, it alerts you when the battery needs replacing instead of chirruping annoyingly late at night when you’re half asleep. If you have Nest Thermostat, the two can work together so if Protect detects an emergency, Thermostat turns off the heating. It even works as a night light
Compatible systems: Amazon, Google Like the Ring (featured last month) this is a video doorbell. When someone is loitering nearby, it alerts you, even if they don’t press the button. When they do press the doorbell, your phone rings and, if you have Google Home, you’ll get a voice alert on the speaker as well as hearing it ring.
Compatible systems: Apple A smart power switch is one of the simplest ways to get into home automation. This device plugs into your wall socket and then you can plug your light or fan or kettle or whatever into the switch. Then, instead of stumbling across a darkened room to reach the switch, you can just say: “Hey, Siri, turn the living room light on,” for instance. It’s easy to set up and it even monitors electrical consumption, too.
Netatmo Welcome: £199.99 Compatible systems: Google The Welcome is a proficient, classily designed security camera which you place anywhere indoors. It’s a smooth aluminium cylinder that looks good enough to have on display. Face recognition means it can automatically turn off video recording for familiar faces. It has local data storage on board, but also uploads video to the cloud. Unlike other smart cameras, there’s no video subscription charge as you save data to your Dropbox account, for example.

Horoscopes
Aries (March 21-April 19)
You could encounter some rather unexpected changes to your career path. Out of the blue you might be offered a new position. It will not be one you have applied for so it might come as a bit of a shock. The money is good - so go for it!
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
You will be very busy with stuff, sorting through your own things as well as those of other people, during this period. You might have dealings with certain humanitarian causes where your past efforts will be recognised and rewarded. You could also be offered a leadership role, a promotion or a pay rise.
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
This is a good time to take stock of your finances. You may have overspent in the last couple of weeks, which means you have little rainy day money. If you take the time to plan your spending more carefully, you could be surprised by how much you can save by simply sticking to a plan.
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
This is a time for relaxing and taking life easy. If you haven’t thought of a holiday, a last-minute getaway would do you the world of good. You may suddenly feel tired, so take some time out. The money will flow easily this month and you will have plenty to spend on the things you enjoy.
Leo (July 23-August 22)
There could be a serious flirtation going on at work at the moment. Certainly, your heart will be fluttering and there will be butterflies in your stomach. You may toy with the idea of starting an affair. Passions will run high and you will feel on top of the world.
Virgo (August 23-September 22)
An analysis of your indicators for this period reveal that you will be mentally alert and switched on to life in general over this period. You will find life invigorating and challenges in work will excite you.. Your voice will be heard by senior people and your talents and creativity will be noted.
Libra (September 23-October 22)
You will be celebrating your finances, since all your investments are doing well and you have nothing to worry about. Your monetary income remains steady and predictable and you will be able to see how your past financial planning has paid dividends.
Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
Wow! What a lucky period for Scorpions! Now is the time to preen yourself and take centre stage. Get your hair done, buy yourself some new clothes and dedicate this month to making yourself look fabulous. Time will fly by like a whirlwind and you may feel that you don’t quite know what’s hit you.
Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
This is another very positive period for the archer star sign and you will find encouragement all around. People will want you to start a new business to show off your expertise. There will be many persuasive people who feel they can gain from following your lead.
Capricorn (December 22-January 19)
You will seem more energetic and ready to explore new horizons. Travel is forecast, on both the work front as well as the home front. You might become interested in a job relocation opportunity which suddenly arises.
Aquarius (January 20-February 18)
You will feel more like yourself at this time because your stress levels will have reduced. You could be inclined to embark on a strict diet where you are promised results very quickly. Don’t be too easily fooled. With regular exercise and a sensible fitness regime, you can easily achieve your desired results.
Pisces (February 19-March 20)
There could be a few niggles ahead as you try to keep a healthy work/life balance. You risk struggling to keep yourself from flying off the handle with work colleagues who lack your conviction. In your frustration, you may be inclined to snap at those closest to you. To advertise text advert to 07868 433 225
