And welcome to the very first edition of 2022. We’re now into our fifth year of serving the town and villages with our very own local magazine.

Thank you to all who entered the Kirks Christmas hamper competition.

Two winners were selected by our intrepid delivery manager Mark: second prize went to Mr Stuart Oakes of Sutton On Sea, and our first prize was anonymously donated to a very worthwhile charity in our town.

Lion Wrestling Promotions EAR READERS of Inside Skegness - allow me to introduce myself. My name is Aaron Sharp. I grew up right here in Skegness as a child in the mid-eighties right throughout the nineties.

I’m sure we can all agree that so much has changed since back then, but wow, what a place to have grown up in, this small town by the seaside. I remember when I was only six years old my mother brought back a video that a friend had given her for me which was none other then a wrestling video. Ever since I watched wrestling for the first time, I knew from that moment on that is what I wanted to become.

The only problem was that when I was a child there really wasn’t anything around that taught wrestling at that time.

Many years later, as that dream never left me at the age of seventeen, I decided to go on a journey, in order to turn my dream into a reality.

Eventually I left home in Skegness and

travelled all over the UK and Europe as I eventually made my way up to becoming a professional wrestler.

Throughout my career I have appeared and wrestled for some of the best promotions around and have wrestled some of the world’s biggest

in Skegness and give back to people what I’d only dreamed of having when I was a child. With myself and my partner, Sabrice, we now have our very own wrestling training academy right here in Skegness as well as starting up our own promotion, putting on Live Professional Wrestling shows, which I may say is doing well.

Our academy aims to teach all ages from the age of six years old right through to adults. It is an absolute blessing that we were able to do this and see the way the academy is slowly growing from strength to strength.

Mother-of-one Chloe becomes first bathroom fitter apprentice With skilled tradespeople in short supply, more and more women are turning to the tools.

HLOE MORRIS has joined AHM Installations as their first on-the-job apprentice bathroom fitter.

“I was working in retail and I could see it was dying,” Chloe said.

“I’ve always been hands on – I’ll always give DIY stuff a try – so I thought I’d go for it. Now I’m learning something new every day and I love it.”

Chloe’s trainer, Dan Newey, has been at the company for 6 years and recently took on the role of training new apprentice fitters.

“AHM has always been good to work for,” Dan said. “I’d say what’s helped me get ahead is that I’m finicky! I want everything to be done exactly as it should be and I don’t let things slide.

After leaving retail, Chloe took a role at McDonald’s with flexible hours so that she could study for a Level 2 plumbing qualification while caring for her son.

“We couldn’t do work experience at college because of Covid, so after college I was looking for on-the-job training roles. I needed hours that would work for my son’s drop off and pick up. When I saw the adverts for AHM I was quite surprised.”

She gets stuck in and works to the same standard as everyone else. I definitely think some customers feel more comfortable having a female fitter onsite.”

Chloe applied for an apprenticeship with AHM Installations, a family-run company that designs and fits mobility bathrooms.

“I want to do well and progress within the company to get to where Dan is. I’d like to train other people in the future,” she said. “Also, women shouldn’t shy away from doing jobs like this. If we all get the job done to the same standard it really makes no difference.”

For AHM, finding the right people for the job has become a challenge.

“I love seeing the before and after photos of the bathrooms and how we make the customers so happy,” Chloe said.

“The demand for safe, affordable bathing has increased significantly in the last few months and good fitters are in short supply. We know this is a challenge faced by many firms, and we’re doing our bit by training people from the very start of their career, like with Chloe,” said Charlie Symcox, director at AHM Installations.

What easy-to-grow plants would you recommend to inject a little colour into the garden at this time of year?

Galanthus nivalis, or snowdrops, are a sure sign that spring is on its way when these dainty little beauties appear. Ideal for naturalising and also for cutting, they flower January through to March.

Pansy Frizzle Sizzle has frilled petals and colourful mix of bold, bright colours of this variety are stunning, and make a real change from traditional pansy varieties. They flower from December to May. Winter flowering Heather will add texture, form and colour to the winter garden. Perfect in pots to dress up patios and steps for winter, mixed with pansies, violas and early flowering bulbs they really do create a lovely display.

Skimmia japonica Rubella is an evergreen shrub with stunning red buds that then open into clusters of small white flowers.

What key plants need pruning before spring arrives?

Winter is a good time to prune back woody shrubs in preparation for spring.

Prune out any dead or diseased growth

Prepare your garden for spring to tidy and ‘cleanse’ the plant. Shrubs such as Forsythia, Syringa and Buddleja all benefit when you prune out the more mature stems to encourage new healthy growth, leaving the younger stems in to flower.

How can gardeners improve the overall look of their garden during winter without causing any damage to dormant plants?

We love to plant up pots, containers and hanging baskets with winter flowering bedding plants to dress up patios, steps and entrances. Our favourite flowers to use for this are Pansies and Violas as there are so many bright and cheery colour mixes to choose from that will flower throughout autumn-spring.

What plants can be grown from seed starting now to give colour in the garden this year?

Achillea is a good all round first year flowering perennial plant that butterflies

and bees love. Sow indoors now and plant out in spring to enjoy its flowers in late summer-autumn.

Begonia semperflorens is ideal for the lazy gardeners. It’s super low maintenance, drought tolerant, perfect for sun or shade and absolutely covered in lush foliage (green or red depending on variety). Sow indoors now and then plant out when weather permits.

Sweet Peas are great for earlier flowering. Sow now indoors then plant out into the garden later. Sweet Peas are one of the nations favourite flowering plants with their gorgeous high scent, climbing ability & lovely flower stems they are a must for any garden, Salvia farinacea ‘Victoria’ is our favourite variety, awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding garden performance. It has good weather resistance and stunning deep blue flower spikes that look fantastic as a central plant in a pot.

What should gardeners do to protect new shoots of perennials and bulbs that have come into growth so early this year?

The best way to protect early perennial shoots is to use garden fleece to cover over emerging shoots when a hard frost is forecast. Using a garden mulch around the base of the new shoots would also help during bouts of cold weather.

Health Seven ways to treat chronic back pain ACK PAIN is considered chronic if it lasts three months or longer. It can come and go, often bringing temporary relief, followed by frustration. Dealing with chronic back pain can be especially trying if you don’t know the cause.

Common causes of chronic back pain Arthritis of the spine - the gradual thinning of the cartilage inside the spine Spinal stenosis - narrowing of the spinal canal that may lead to nerve pain Disc problems, such as a herniated or bulging disc Myofascial pain syndrome unexplained muscle pain and tenderness In some cases, it’s difficult to pinpoint the cause of chronic back pain. It’s important not to make rushed decisions or undergo extensive medical procedures until the origin of the pain is found.

If the source of the pain is not known or can’t be treated, your best option may be to work with your doctor on reducing the flare-ups and making the pain manageable with nonsurgical treatments.

Nonsurgical treatments for chronic back Pain 1. Physical therapy Exercise is the foundation of chronic back pain treatment. It’s one of the first treatments you should try under the guidance of your physician and spine physical therapist. However, the same set of exercises doesn’t work for everyone, and need to be tailored to your specific symptoms and condition.

Maintaining the exercise routine at home is also a big part of success.

Physical therapy for chronic back pain may include:

Retraining your posture Testing the limits of pain tolerance l Stretching and flexibility exercises l Aerobic exercises l Core strengthening l l

2. Mindfulness and meditation To manage the frustration, irritability, depression and other psychological aspects of dealing with chronic pain, you may get referred to a rehabilitation psychologist. This specialist may recommend meditation, yoga, tai chi and othercognitive and relaxation strategies to keep your mind from focusing on pain.

3. Diet Some diets are highly inflammatory, especially those high in trans fats,

refined sugars and processed foods.

Maintaining a healthy weight could also help lessen your back pain by reducing the pressure on your spine.

4. Lifestyle modifications Listen to your body and learn to pace yourself. Take a break when mowing the lawn, or make several trips when carrying groceries. Take note of the activities that worsen your pain and avoid them if possible.

Another important lifestyle change to try is giving up smoking. Nicotine is scientifically known to accentuate pain and delay healing.

5. Injection-based treatments Nerve blocks, epidural steroid injections, nerve ablations and other types of injection-based procedures can be used when the source of the pain is known. Injections may stop or lessen pain for a certain period of time, but are not intended as long-term solutions and shouldn’t be used in isolation.

6. Alternative treatments Acupuncture, massage, biofeedback therapy, laser therapy, electrical nerve stimulation and other nonsurgical spine treatments can also make a difference for chronic back pain.

7. Pharmacologic treatments Analgesics, antiinflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants and other medications can be used to help control chronic back pain.

How to stop your dog being stolen

Dog theft has always been a problem as long as there have been dogs as pets. Recent headlines in newspapers and on social media make it appear that it is on the rise and has naturally led to people being very scared for the well being of their pets.

Dear Readers,

Just like that we are into the New Year….

In the local Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) we have had a busy start to the year and our priorities over the next three months will see us concentrating on the following: 1. Theft in the town and surrounding retail outlets: Over December and continuing into this year there will be high visibility patrols by the team around the town centre, the supermarkets and the retail outlets in an attempt to deter those who steal. If you notice someone acting suspiciously in a store, do not put yourself in any danger, but report it to a member of staff or call the Police. Often stores do not know they have suffered a theft until after the event and the chances of recovering the stolen property becomes far less.

If they are made aware by a member of the public it can help them to deal with it swiftly.

2. E-Scooters: Some of you may have noticed a few rather quick electric powered scooters appearing on the streets. Sadly, as much fun as they may appear to be, their use in public is illegal unless complying with several legal requirements. Essentially any scooter powered by a motor is classified as a ‘motor vehicle’ in law and would be subject to the requirements for driving.

All Officers will be actively approaching users offering education of the laws and where necessary taking

enforcement action. This may result in the scooter being seized, a traffic offence report, penalty points and a fine.

The NPT team have leaflets available explaining the legislation in further detail, also there is a lot of relevant information at the following Lincolnshire Police website. www.lincs.police.uk/reporting-advice/driving-roads-andvehicles/e-scooters/ 3. Anti Social Behaviour in the town centre: The NPT have been acting on numerous reports from residents and passers-by to the Police regarding street drinking, littering and abusive behaviour on Roman Bank outside the old TSB Bank. Evidence was gathered in statements from witnesses and town CCTV. More high visibility patrols were carried out by local Officers and engagement with those sitting on the steps. This resulted in several individuals being issued with Community Protection Notices, which essentially list things that the person is prohibited from doing. Since taking these actions the area has seen a decline in reports of anti-social behaviour. The NPT will continue to monitor this and deal swiftly with any further offending.

Milton Abbas Close to the market town of Blandford Forum in Dorset is the picturesque village of Milton Abbas. It was built in 1780 when landowner and politician Joseph Damer decided the nearby town of Middleton was spoiling his view of the countryside. So he had it destroyed, and the inhabitants moved to the new village of Milton Abbas, out of his line of sight. Today, Milton Abbas is known for having rows of whitewashed, thatched cottages.

Gold Hill, Shaftesbury Gold Hill, a steep cobbled street flanked by thatched cottages in the Dorset town of Shaftesbury, has

Clovelly Clovelly, on the north Devon coast, is a small fishing village with an unspoilt feel, with cobbled streets running past historic buildings. Donkeys and sledges are used to deliver goods to the inhabitants, as cars aren’t permitted on Main Street, which runs the length of the village down to the harbour. The great painter JMW Turner painted Clovelly several times in 1811, and Victorian worthies such as Kipling and Dickens came here often.

Gold Hill, Shaftesbury

Tintagel Down the coast in Cornwall is the village of Tintagel where, on a peninsula jutting out into the sea, stand the ruins of Tintagel Castle. The ruins sit in two halves, connected by a footbridge over a gorge. Tintagel has long been linked to the legend of King Arthur – Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote in the 12th century that the king was conceived here..

Cadbury Castle Continuing with the Arthurian theme, we come to the magnificent hill fort known as Cadbury Castle, known in local tradition as Camelot, the home of Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Rising above the Somerset countryside north of the town of Sherborne, Cadbury Castle was occupied in the Bronze and Iron ages and used by Celtic tribespeople to defend against Roman invaders. It was still in use in the 11th century by

Lost Gardens of Heligan

Wells Cathedral Regarded by many architecture writers as one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Europe, Wells Cathedral is hugely significant as an example of the Early English Gothic style of the 12th century, notable for its grand western front covered in medieval carvings and its golden spires. Inside, you’ll find magnificent scissor arches, and one of the finest collections of medieval stained glass still in existence.

Lynmnouth St Catherine’s Chapel

The Devon village of Lynmouth is where the barren moorland of Exmoor meets the Bristol Channel.

The landscape painter Thomas Gainsborough came here on a honeymoon in 1746 and described it as “the most delightful place for a landscape painter this country can boast”. The village sits at the confluence of the East and West Lyn rivers and is backed by huge wooded cliffs that tower over the harbour.

Lynmouth is connected to the larger village of Lynton at the top of the cliffs by a funicular railway powered by the waters of the West Lyn.

St Michael’s Mount In Mount’s Bay in Cornwall is a tidal island that can only be reached at low

tide. On the island is a fortress and an ancient church, and beneath them a tiny fishing village. Together they form an extraordinarily romantic scene.

Originally the church and priory were home to Benedictine monks and were gifted by Edward the Confessor in the 11th century to Mont Saint-Michel in Brittany, another tidal island monastery.

The castle, begun at least 600 years ago, has been home to the St Aubyn family since the 1650s. The Mount plays an important part in Cornish folklore and Arthurian legend and is today maintained by the National Trust.

Lost Gardens of Heligan Just inland from Mevagissey on the Cornish coastline are the restored botanical Gardens of Heligan. Created by generations of the Tremayne family from the late 18th to the early 20th century, the Gardens were neglected in the years following World War I, when the family left for Italy and many of the staff had been killed on the battlefield.

And then, in the 1990s, the overgrown and bramble-infested Gardens were restored. You can explore extensive flower gardens, Japanese, Italian and herbaceous sections, rhododendrons, summerhouses, walled gardens and a subtropical garden full of palm trees and bamboo.

St Catherine’s Chapel, Abbotsbury

St Michael’s Mount

Perhaps the most striking view in the entire West Country is the isolated St Catherine’s Chapel that sits atop a hill and looks across country to Chesil Beach and the Jurassic Coast of Dorset. The 14th-century chapel was built by the monks of Abbotsbury Abbey as a place of retreat and prayer.

The abbey has been in ruins since the Dissolution of the Monasteries, but the chapel still stands. The slopes around it show evidence of medieval field systems and ploughing. Glastonbury Tor in Somerset is another impressive hilltop church site, but you’ll find far fewer tourists at Abbotsbury.

Shooting Star Children’s Hospices is an English children’s hospice charity.

It is intended to support and provide palliative care to families with children who are not expected to reach the age of 19 because of illness, genetic conditions, or incurable disease.

Donna MacCallum joined the Sutton on Sea Slimming World group in January 2018 after feeling embarrassed about her size. She enjoyed going out for meals with friends and family but no longer wanted to worry about how close the tables may be to each other and whether she would fit through. With support from her Slimming World group, Donna followed Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan and lost 5.5lbs in her first week. She swapped takeaways for homemade “fakeaway” meals such as beef in black bean, sweet and sour chicken and sticky pork stir fry the whole family could enjoy. She says: “People think slimming means going hungry, yet it’s not like that at all with this healthy eating plan. I love food and it’s never once felt like I was on ‘a diet’.

Donna continued to lose weight during Lockdown and found a new love for walking. “I’m so proud I managed to continue my weight loss all over lockdown and reach my own personal achievement target. I kept active as well as eating healthy foods. I regularly walk in the evenings on top of 2 dog walks during the day and complete 4-5km within 35 minutes. We’ve put together our top 5 reasons why every gym member should book a boxing class.

1. It’s great for cardio There’s no doubt that exercise is good for you. Regular physical activity improves your overall health, reduces the risk of disease, counters the effects of depression and anxiety, helps reduce stress and promotes weight loss, especially if you use the best exercises for weight loss. BMW 330e King of the PHEVs

MW is probably laughing all the way to the bank right now. Or it should be considering the popularity of the 330e plug-in hybrid.

The firm says that 25% of all 3-series buyers are plumping for this model, and although there are undeniable tax avantages for going for the plug-in, we hope that pleasing HMRC isn’t the only reason why the 330e is so ubiquitous.

speed Steptronic automatic gearbox. The packaging is so good that the casing is just 15mm longer, compared with the standard eight-speed auto fitted elsewhere in the 3-series range. Having the motor in this position is great for efficiency, too – particularly when it comes to brakeenergy regeneration.

Because the jump to 289bhp is delivered entirely by jolting an extra 40bhp out of the electric motor, the response is quite impressive. So much so, BMW reckons that from

12mph it’ll give you twice the ‘vigour’ of a similarly powerful conventional car within a second – and after three seconds you’ll be a full car length ahead. Exactly the sort of performance environmentally conscious BMW buyers are probably looking for.

In accelerative terms, absolutely. Give the right pedal the stomping it fully deserves, and the 330e is like a rabbit with a lurcher on its back – it squirts off with real determination to get to the next turn before everything behind it.

Being a BMW, it also has the chassis chops to carry that initial acceleration into the corners without sailing into the scenery.

On paper, 0-62mph takes 5.8sec, but that doesn’t quite do the in-motion effort justice. Out on the motorway it builds speed quicker than the 330d.

Still, though the XtraBoost effect

For one, it’s damned good to drive. For another, the electric-only driving range is usable to the point that it will cover most owners’ commutes. And finally, there’s the XtraBoost feature that cranks the combined petrol/electric power output up to 289bhp - if only for short bursts at a time.

The BMW 330 e combines the same 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo petrol engine that you’ll find in the regular 320i with an electric motor, which is neatly integrated into the eight-

only lasts for 10 seconds a time, it is available even if you’ve already rinsed the main hybrid batteries of all their electric driving range. Plus, how often do you accelerate for more than 10 seconds at a time?

Is the 330e a good hybrid? Yes, and it’s hard not to be very impressed – the 330e is able to drive up to 41 miles on electric power alone, and there are an increased number of options to make the most of this e-efficiency.

For instance, you can set a guide percentage of battery life you’d like to retain – should you wish to save the e-power for when you’re in a low emissions zone or trying to creep up the drive without waking the neighbours – and the car will do its best to manage this on your behalf.

Our initial results with this were mixed (basically, booting it all the time will

inevitably still drain the batteries – shock, horror), but there is also an automatic setting, which works with the sat-nav guidance to choose the most appropriate points on your route to deploy the electricity.

In addition, you can manually activate full electric mode, and this will happily carry the car right up to 87mph and cruise there until the remaining range runs out. Don’t expect to drive 40 miles on electricity at that speed, though.

Typical PHEV eyebrows-into-orbit stuff here – the official fuel economy for the

330e is a claimed 138mpg, with CO2 emissions of 39g/km (that’s 10% less CO2 than the last version). You’ll need to be using the electric power a lot and mostly doing short journeys to get close to those figures, however.

The verdict? The word that springs most readily to mind here is ‘impressive’ – BMW’s plug-in hybrid certainly doesn’t fall down as a box-ticking exercise, with plentiful performance, extended electric range and some clever tricks. And that’s why it’s so popular.

But to say that it didn’t leave us wanting more works both ways. While the 330e does the whole PHEV thing perfectly well, it still isn’t the kind of car that gets under your skin. This is a well thought-out and even enjoyable tool, rather than the kind of genuinely emotional experience a really outstanding BMW can be. So – a case of admiration, not love...
