Reviews and advice on recent tech innovations
Smart TVs: All you need to know
N
early every TV on the market calls itself smart. But how smart are they? What do they offer, and how does it vary from one brand or model to the next? Is a smart TV really better than a dedicated streaming device? And what about privacy concerns? We’ve got answers to all your most frequently asked questions about smart TVs.
People with larger homes should also double-check their Wi-Fi coverage. If the Wi-Fi router is on the second floor and the smart TV is in the basement, for example, the set may not be able to stream video from Netflix or other providers without experiencing hiccups. If your smart TV isn’t getting a strong enough wireless signal, you have a few options to
Video. However, some sets offer only a handful of apps that rarely change, while other models deliver several screens of offerings. As smart TVs have become more prominent, the number of dedicated streaming apps has also grown, with apps offering
What is a smart TV? Originally called “connected TVs,” these sets were later branded as “smart TVs” by companies such as Samsung and LG. The term has come to denote any TV that can be connected to the internet to access streaming media services and that can run entertainment apps, such as ondemand video-rental services, internet music stations and web browsers. A growing number of models now include voice recognition tools, like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, for switching channels and searching for programmes. Most smart TVs will work with the smart speaker you already own, and a few will offer some or all of that same functionality built right into the TV. Smart TVs are also gaining more integrated smart home features. Many TVs are compatible with other connected devices in the home, including lights, door locks and other sensors, and some TVs even include a dedicated dashboard for controlling all of the devices in your connected home. Samsung’s SmartThings - which comes built into Samsung Smart TVs - is a current favourite, but similar offerings are available on LG and Sony smart TVs.
How do smart TVs connect to the internet? A smart TV uses your home network to provide streaming video and services on your TV, and smart TVs use wired Ethernet and built-in Wi-Fi to stay connected.
6
remedy the problem. If your router is more than three years old, a good Wi-Fi router that supports 802.11ac could do the trick. Wi-Fi range extenders are also available from companies such as Netgear, but these devices require some time and patience to set up and install.
live news and streaming shows and movies for free. The lowerpriced models of some manufacturers offer only the most popular apps, while higher-priced sets provide a much more complete array of services.
What services do smart TVs offer, and how do they differ from one another? There is no standard operating system or interface for smart TVs. Nearly every smart-TV maker uses different software and a different graphical presentation. Some companies use a variety of operating systems and interfaces depending on the model. Most smart TVs support such popular services as Netflix and Amazon Prime
Please mention Inside Skegness Magazine when responding to advertisements
Poor wireless signal? A good Wi-Fi router should solve the problem.
The arrangement of the apps also varies. Some smart TVs use a single scrolling row of icons to display options; others use full-screen menus with rows of options to chose from. Several manufacturers are also adding support for popular voice assistants, such as Google Home and Amazon Alexa. It allows new smart TVs to understand a wider array of voice commands, offer deeper content search and even control compatible devices ranging from thermostats and webcams to lights and locks.
Will my smart TV maker regularly update the software with new features? That depends. For the most part, TV manufacturers are adding and customizing apps on their own. Some TV companies are quicker than others at fixing the occasional bug or working with developers to improve apps. Nevertheless, most major manufacturers perform software updates periodically. You may even find manufacturers updating the entire operating system. And don’t worry about getting left behind; if one company adds a popular service, such as Netflix, the rest of the manufacturers generally follow suit.
Can a smart TV crash or hang like a PC? Definitely, and they do. Smart TVs require computer chips to juggle video processing, upscaling, multiple screens and an internet connection. These sets also use memory to buffer streaming video and music, and need additional processing power to deal
with graphics. Just as phones have become computers, so, too, have smart TVs. However, the sets are getting better, with quad-core processors that can better handle the tasks that are becoming common. On the other hand, simply turning a set off and then on usually resolves the issues.
Can you surf the web on a smart TV? Some, but not all, smart TVs let you go online. This requires a special browser that is both compatible with all the HTML standards that websites use and able to convert and display those sites properly on a big screen.
Can my smart TV be hacked or contract a virus? In theory, the answer is clearly yes. So-called white-hat hackers have brought attention to the issue by demonstrating ways to break into a smart TV connected to the internet and do things like steal passwords and change channels. To be safe, avoid doing anything sensitive on a smart TV, such as online banking or shopping with a credit card. Smart TVs are simply not as safe as computers.
Can a smart TV watch you?
If you want to surf the web on your TV, make sure your set has its own browser. Also, ask if there’s a wireless-keyboard option, which is far less common.
Yes, it can. Information you share on a Facebook app on a TV or when ordering on Amazon or Netflix on the big screen is shared in the same way as when you conduct such business on a PC or a smartphone. In addition, companies can collect private information about you and your viewing habits from a smart TV. In late 2013, for example, LG admitted that it had received information about what channels owners were watching, even after those users turned on the privacy setting. Is it ever too late to learn a musical instrument? According to the leading TV & Radio’s British concert pianist James Rhodes, the answer is an emphatic ‘no’ - and he has written a book to prove it. The delightfully straight-talking ‘How To Play the Piano’ is an elegant little volume that promises - with just 45 minutes’ practice a day, six days a week, for six weeks - to enable anyone with access to a keyboard to play one of JS Bach’s most beloved works, the Prelude No. 1 in C major from Book One of The WellTempered Clavier. Following his book’s publication, countless readers were moved to tell him they’d been inspired by his words to return to the piano themselves. James explains, “I lose track of how many people have said “Oh, I used to play when I was a kid, I wish I’d stuck it out,”
Recently he received a message from a retired Mexican professional airline pilot who said: “I used to play as a kid but I haven’t played for 50 years. I read your book, I bought a piano, I got myself a piano teacher and now I practise every day. And I
just wanted you to know these are now my best days!” If you fancy taking up the Beginner to Bach 45:6:6 challenge then just visit www.pianoacademy.org.uk for more information, sheet music and demos.

Spring is finally in evidence as daffodils and flowering trees start to bloom. Expect the inevitable April showers this month but with sunny days too, when you can turn your attention to the lawn. It’s an exciting month, with indoor-sown seeds well into growth, and it’s also time to start sowing outdoors. Just watch out for frosts... Keep weeds under control All weeds can be controlled without weedkillers, but persistent or deep rooted weeds may be very difficult to eradicate. Ongoing control is likely to be necessary. Annual weeds (which only live for a year) and epehemeral weeds (which live for less than a year) are the easiest to control, as they are usually shallow rooted. However, they can scatter seed prolifically, so usually reappear and require further control. Deep-rooted perennial weeds (which die down in the winter and re-grow each spring) will re-grow from their roots if the tops are removed or burned off. They can be difficult to dig out and may grow up through weed barriers in time. Weeds can be controlled whenever they are troublesome, which is usually in the spring and summer months. It is a good idea to put weed barriers in place in late winter or early spring, as they work better as a preventative than when an existing problem requires suppression.
18
remove some of the lower growth to improve air drainage. If there is no alternative, plant the larger fruit trees at the bottom and the smaller ones on the higher ground.
Gardening Protect fruit blossom from late frosts Depending on the fruit, measures may have to be taken to protect vulnerable growth from late winter through spring. Most soft fruit and top fruit, with the exception of figs, are very hardy while dormant over the winter as temperatures do not fall low enough to harm these trees in Britain. Frost occurs when temperatures fall below 0ºC (32ºF) and objects near the ground then become chilled and freeze. Cold air naturally flows downward on sloping ground, collecting at the lowest point or against a barrier. If this barrier is a fence or hedge consider creating a gap, or
Tie in climbing and rambling roses Climbers are routinely pruned in winter, after the flowers have faded, between December and February. Long whippy shoots can be shortened or tied in during autumn, to prevent strong winds from damaging them. Climbing roses are not self-clinging and need supports of trellis or horizontal wires to which the shoots can be tied. Set the lowest wire 45cm (18in) off the ground and space subsequent wires 30cm (1ft) apart.
Sow hardy annuals, herbs and wild flower seed outdoors Sowing seed outdoors, directly into final growing places, is ideal for gardeners who do not have much room to raise seed indoors in trays or propagators. You also don’t need to start seed sowing as early in spring as when you sow outdoors. As long as the soil is warm and moist, seed can be sown and it will germinate quickly. In practice, this usually means either midspring to early summer (April-June), or late summer (September). If you can provide the crop with protection, such as cloches or fleece, sowing can begin in early spring. Regular watering will make it possible to raise rows of seedlings in the height of summer.

The new Ford Fiesta: Stepping out of the shadows T
he timing of this new model’s arrival is impeccable. The latest generation of rivals most notably, the Seat Ibiza and the Volkswagen Polo - could credibly claim to have exceeded the long-standing benchmark set by the Fiesta. As a result, this new version must improve on not only its predecessor’s impressive legacy but also the polished desirability of the competition. No pressure.
Performance One of the very first downsized turbo three-pots of its kind in 2012, this motor has been imitated countless times, but it remains to be equalled for its energetic fizzing charm or its smoothness or willingness to work at both low and high revs. In this application, your sense of the motor’s balance and slickness, and its impressive mix of potency, operating range and refinement, has been bolstered by Ford’s efforts to reduce noise and vibration at source, and to better isolate the cabin through measures such as an acoustic windscreen.
22
There’s also the Fiesta’s new six-speed manual gearbox to consider, with its very pleasingly light and short although slick and positive - action. The upshot is that there’s a new-found sense of quiet discretion about this powertrain, as well as the familiar old accessible slug of torque and vivacity as the tacho needle soars.
Unsurprisingly, the previous interior has been done away with completely. According to Ford, its replacement effectively halves the number of switches and buttons, many of them having been relocated to a new 8.0in touchscreen. It’s possible to get a little overexcited about the new Sync 3 infotainment system. Plainly, the touchscreen is superior to the complicated sequence of buttons that had to be pushed to make its forerunner operate, and in its size, positioning and sensitivity, you could hardly ask for more.
Interior Despite a facelift in 2013, Ford never managed to counteract the last-decade mix of a button-heavy dashboard and tiny infotainment screen, neither of which could be operated with anything like the seamlessness that a smartphone-owning buyer expects. From that exceptionally low bar, the new model constitutes a predictably gargantuan step up.

Ride and handling From a dynamic perspective, the influence of the 4mm added to the Fiesta’s wheelbase ought to be easily balanced out by the width added to the car’s axle tracks (30mm front, 10mm rear). So, even on paper, the Fiesta’s real unique selling point was never really under threat here. And in practice, this new Ford is what its forebears always were: the outstanding choice for keener drivers. It continues to transcend the realities that normally define how much fun you can have in a small and cheap car, delivering remarkable cornering gip and balance, plus genuinely compelling handling response and driver engagement, partnered with ride refinement that’s hardly compromised at all. There are small cars that approach what it can do in terms of outright grip and incisiveness (although not on mid-corner balance) – and most of them need much firmer, more restless and less isolating suspension settings to do it.
The flipside of that coin is, of course, a slightly higher showroom price. Comparing on a like-for-like basis as much as possible, our test car was £200 more than an equivalent Nissan Micra, £300 more than a Mazda 2, £500 than a Citroën C3 and £700 more than an Ibiza. Titanium spec is pretty high, giving you keyless start and Sync3 infotainment with smartphone mirroring and DAB - but rear parking sensors and heightadjustable front seats both ought to be standard too.
MPG and running costs
Verdict
The thinking behind repositioning the Ka as a full-sized supermini in its own right, the subsequent deletion of the very cheapest Fiesta derivatives and the slight upwards relocation of the rest of the Fiesta range is that it should make this car more desirable, less prone to discounting and cheaper to own in terms of retained value.
Don’t think this generation of the Fiesta is simply a reskin of the previous one. Such an assumption doesn’t do justice to the design and engineering work done here to make a market leader better - while also doing no harm to it. Ford’s evolutionary approach is understandable and its success in producing the best car in its class to drive, and one much better than the car it replaces in other respects, shouldn’t be underestimated. A car as uncommonly good to drive as this will never stray far from unqualified recommendation but, for a modern supermini, it cannot be a golden ticket either.
That may prove an effective strategy, even for a car that sells in such high volumes. CAP’s forecast for our test car puts it at 40 percent retained value after three years and 36,000 miles. We compared that with 10 other equivalent superminis and only two could beat it (Seat Ibiza and Mazda 2).

Diesel particulate filters All you need to know...
I
f you own a diesel car, you probably have a diesel particulate filter. However, you may not know exactly what this is or how to maintain it. Diesel particulate filters have been fitted to diesel-fuel cars for almost two decades now - but if not maintained, or if tampered with there could be serious consequences for your car.
What is a diesel particulate filter? A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a filter that captures and stores exhaust soot (some refer to them as soot traps) in order to reduce emissions from diesel cars. But because they only have a finite capacity, this trapped soot periodically has to be emptied or ‘burned off ’ to regenerate the DPF. This regeneration process cleanly burns off the excess soot deposited in the filter, reducing the harmful exhaust emission and helps to prevent the tell-tale black smoke you used to see from diesel vehicles, particularly when accelerating. Euro 5 exhaust emissions legislation introduced in 2009 to help lower car CO2 emissions effectively made DPFs mandatory, and since then, around one in two new cars a year have been diesel-powered.
How do I tell if my DPF is blocked? If the DPF is becoming clogged with soot or a fault develops in the system, an orange light will appear on the dashboard (see pic).
What causes a diesel particulate filter blockage? Short journeys at low speeds are the prime cause of blocked DPFs. Car makers often recommend petrol cars for city-bound short hops. A poorly serviced DPF may fail sooner than a well maintained one, which should last for at least 100,000 miles. It’s also important to use the right type of oil - some oils contain additives that can actually block filters.
24
Extra How do I maintain a DPF? The best way to maintain a DPF is to make sure it’s fully able to regenerate itself when it’s full of soot (when the warning light appears). There are two types of regeneration: passive and active.
Passive regeneration This occurs when the car is running at speed on long journeys, allowing the exhaust temperature to increase to a higher level and cleanly burn off excess soot in the filter. It is advised that drivers regularly give their diesel vehicle a good 30 to 50 minute run at sustained speed to help clear the filter.
complete fully in which case the warning light will continue to show the filter as partially blocked. Driving for 10 minutes or so at speeds greater than 40mph should remedy this. The following will indicate that active regeneration is taking place: ● Engine note change ● Cooling fans running ● A slight increase in fuel consumption ● Increased idle speed ● Deactivation of automatic Stop/Start ● A hot, acrid smell from the exhaust
Do I need a DPF to pass the MOT? A diesel particulate filter check has been part of the MOT test since February 2014. If a filter has been
removed, the car will fail its MOT.
Dashboard warning light indicating a blocked DPF.
However, not all drivers do this type of driving regularly – which is why manufacturers have designed an alternative form of regeneration.
Active regeneration Active regeneration means extra fuel is injected automatically, as part of the vehicle’s ECU, when a filter reaches a predetermined limit (normally about 45%), raising the temperature of the exhaust and burning off stored soot. If the journey is too short, however, the regeneration process may not
What does a new DPF cost? They are very expensive! A new one can cost between £1,000 and £3,500 wiping out a diesel’s cost savings. As cars age, the cost of the replacement DPF could be more than the value of the car - and it is older, higher mileage cars that are most likely to require a new DPF. There are now other suppliers of diesel particulate filters that charge less, but be careful here: they must still have the correct Type Approval or they may not work correctly and end up costing you more in repairs. See the guys at All-Terrain and get your diesel car running as it should.

Health
Get started with healthy eating H ealthy eating isn’t just dumping the sugar and loading up on low fat foods. Here’s how to get started in healthy eating.
There are different nutrients in different foods. You need a wide variety of foods so that you have a better chance of eating all the nutrients your body requires. Healthy eating is about balance - about getting the right range of nutrients from a number of food groups. No foods are ‘forbidden’ - anything you want to eat will have its part to play and a place in a healthy diet. Ideally your meals should be based around the following five food groups: ● Bread, cereals and potatoes ● Fruits and vegetables ● Milk and dairy products ● Meat, fish and alternatives ● Fats and sugars
Breads, cereals and potatoes These should be the basis for every meal. This might be a baked potato, some mash, a wholemeal roll, pasta, steamed rice, couscous, polenta, bulgur wheat, pearl barley and the list goes on. Aim for whole grain versions of cereals when you can — this means brown bread and rice and
wholemeal pasta. Whole grains have been associated with healthier hearts and contain extra fibre, which can help prevent constipation and bowel cancer.
Fruit and vegetables A key part of your diet, they provide water, fibre and an array of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They have been shown to help prevent a number of diseases and illnesses including heart disease, stroke, cancer and high blood pressure. Include fruit and vegetables at every meal, and aim for at least five portions a day. A portion is usually around a handful — so that can be an apple, a fruit smoothie, a side salad, a can of tomatoes, some steamed broccoli.
Milk and dairy products These are a good source of calcium as well as protein, vitamins and other minerals. If you do not eat dairy products or are a vegan, soya or similar replacements fall into this category. Eat two to three servings of low fat dairy products per day. This could be milk with your cereal, a yogurt with lunch and some low fat cream cheese in the afternoon. Calcium can also found in tofu, nuts and beans.
Meat, poultry and fish These provide protein, B vitamins, iron
and zinc. Meat alternatives also fall into this category. Beans, nuts and pulses also provide protein, but contain less iron and B vitamins, so if you do not eat meat you need to ensure you are getting these micronutrients from other sources. Protein is very satisfying, so if you eat a little at every meal you are more likely to feel full and less likely to overeat or snack later. Oily fish are an extremely good source of healthy fats — aim for two portions per week. Trim visible fat from meat to cut down on bad fats.
Fats and sugars Fats and sugars should make up the smallest part of your meal. Fats should be good fats where possible i.e. olive oil, nut, seed or plant oil. Sugary treats are fine on occasion and indeed are part of a healthy diet, but can cause tooth decay if eaten too frequently. Remember to eat regularly to give your body the supply of energy it needs. Don’t skip breakfast, it’s a false economy! You will only end up overeating later in the day. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day (this can be in diluting juice, herbal teas etc.) and feel free to have one alcoholic drink a day too — this can actually be beneficial to health. Binge drinking is however, a no-no.

Fitness
Is running good or bad for you you? R father died similarly when he was ten years younger than Jim. It is likely that Jim Fixx’s devotion to running gave him an extra ten years of quality life that his father didn’t enjoy. The percentage of fatalities in races is infinitesimally small and regular running provides a great many health and fitness benefits that outweigh rare instances of heart attacks or other medical problems that may occur whilst training or racing.
running has often been viewed as a potentially dangerous or damaging activity. But can a sport that improves your cardiovascular fitness really be bad for you? Here’s an assessment on whether running is good or bad for you.
Running causes joint problems and impact injuries
Runners are inflexible and frequently get muscle injuries
Running is good for you: Running strengthens your joints and bones and provided you wear well-cushioned shoes, run off-road regularly for improved shock absorption, and avoid heavy training mileages, you’ll not experience problems.
Running is good for you: Providing you warm up well and include flexibility exercises in your training schedule, runners should not experience strains and muscle pulls. Running is bad for you: The primary topic of conversation on any running club night or the start line of any race, is who’s currently injured, who’s been injured and who’s coming back from injury. Injuries and running go handin-hand.
Running is bad for you: Repeated pounding takes its toll (in both the short and long-term) on bones, particularly on joints such as the knee, which is particularly susceptible to injury. Regular running will strengthen the skeleton but equally, if you always run on pavements, have unsuitable footwear or focus on long distances on the road, you can get injured.
Running is boring Running is good for you: The great outdoors, off-road exploration and freedom that running brings means that it’s never boring. Running is bad for you: Plodding around the same routes week in, week out is dull, dull, dull. Exercising without any purpose (as opposed to running during a football game or sport) is pointless.
training with friends as well as alone should mean that you never get stale.
Running is dangerous to your health Running is good for you: Running brings a whole host of physiological benefits, including an improved cardiovascular (CV) system, stronger heart, greater blood volume and improved resistance to infection to name a few.
Running can be boring because by nature it is a repetitious activity.
Running is bad for you: Running is a killer. Remember Jim Fixx, the American running guru that died whilst on a training run? More recent examples of fatalities in the other major running events show that it is a dangerous activity.
However, by varying your routes, distances and training sessions,
Yes, Jim Fixx did die whilst running and of a heart attack, but his sedentary
42
It’s true that far too many runners get injured and needlessly so. Following correct training protocols and focusing on regular flexibility training, particularly for the older runner, should ensure that you can continue to train unhindered.
The verdict Both camps have valid points. It would be very easy for us to categorically promote running and disregard the valid and real problems that running can bring. However, to remain completely balanced, that would be an invalid assessment. Running is a life enhancing activity that can be enjoyed at every age and level by whoever puts on a pair of training shoes. As a health and fitness activity, it’s pretty hard to beat. Running is neither a killer nor a cure-all, but the positives massively outweigh the negatives.

Pets
The scientific benefits of owning a cat Studies have shown that just watching cat videos on the internet can boost a person’s energy and create positive emotions - so it’s no surprise that actual cat ownership has a number of benefits. Here are a few.
They’ll help you cope Losing a loved one is incredibly painful, but one of the best ways of coping is to own a pet. Cats have been shown to help people get over their loss more quickly, and show less physical symptoms of pain, such as crying. Despite the fact that they are only animals, cats serve as a social support during difficult times. People in mourning report talking to their pet to work out their feelings, since it is often easier to talk to something that won’t respond and can’t judge than to another human being.
You’ll have a healthier heart
One study found that over a 10-year period cat owners were 30% less likely to die of a heart attack or stroke than non-cat owners (although this might just be because cat owners are more relaxed and have lower stress in general).
They fulfill your need for companionship The stereotype that dogs are more affectionate than cats is just that: a stereotype. In fact, it turns out that cats can be just as good of companions as dogs, especially for women. A recent study found that having a cat in the house is the emotional equivalent of having a romantic partner. As well as initiating contact much of the time, studies have shown cats will remember kindness shown to them and return the favour later.
You’ll sleep better Several studies and polls in the UK have found that people (especially women) prefer to sleep with their
Owning any pet is good for your heart. Cats in particular lower your stress level - possibly since they don’t require as much effort as dogs and lower the amount of anxiety in your life. Petting a cat has a positive calming effect.

cats than with their partners, and they even report sleeping better with a cat than with a human. A recent study indicates that they might be on to something: 41% of the people in that study indicated that they slept better because of their pet, while only 20% said that it led to disturbances.
Cat ownership means fewer allergies Sadly, it’s too late for you, but if you have a child on the way, it might be time to get a cat. In 2002, a study found that children under a year old who were exposed to a cat were less likely to develop allergies - and not just pet allergies. It was also found that high pet exposure early in life appears to protect against not only pet allergy but also other types of common allergies, such as allergy to dust mites, ragweed, and grass.
Deluxe licenced cat hotel run by a passionate cat lover and owner. When you are on holiday you can relax knowing that your cat is being pampered and spoilt. Each suite has a theme which includes a radiator, handmade steel furniture, soft bedding, scratching post and toys. Everyday cat food provided also offering a special menu (prawns, tuna, seafood). Grooming available and a pet taxi service, a picture with text sent everyday to your mobile so you be assured your cat is being well cared for.

Rose Plumbing Company Asbestos: FAST, RELIABLE COURTEOUS A hiddenAND health hazard TILINGBathrooms SERVICES By Sam Sleight
Whilst Asbestos was banned in 1999, it was frequently used in construction between the 1930s and 1980s. It is likely that Asbestos can be discovered in buildings which were constructed before the year 2000, whether they are industrial or residential. The substance was once used for a multitude of construction techniques from Asbestos Cement to Insulation. It can be said that during this time period, the risks of Asbestos were unknown, hence why it was used so extensively.
Recent media has shone a light on the responsibilities local authorities and businesses have to protect individuals from asbestos exposure. An urgent campaign was released in March 2019 encouraging employees of Butlins between 1980 and 1982 to seek medical attention for potential Asbestos related diseases. This was launched after a previous employee of Butlins, who worked as a handyman, discovered that Asbestos exposure in the workplace caused his Cancer. This case shows just one occupation in which workers could be at risk of Asbestos Email: info@roseplumbingco.co.uk exposure. The risk of Asbestos exposure is also prevalent in occupations such as Engineers, Factory Workers, Maintenance Staff and Tradesmen.

Recipe Method
Hot cross buns
1 Bring 300ml full-fat milk to the boil, then remove from the heat and add 50g butter. Leave to cool until it reaches hand temperature. Put 500g strong bread flour, 1 tsp salt, 75g caster sugar and 7g sachet fast-action yeast into a bowl. Make a well in the centre. Pour in the warm milk and butter mixture, then add 1 beaten egg. Mix well, then bring everything together until you have a sticky dough.
2 Tip on to a lightly floured surface and knead the dough Repeat for 5 mins until smooth and elastic. Put the dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with oiled cling film and leave to rise in a warm place for 1 hr or until doubled in size. 3 With the dough still in the bowl, tip in 75g sultanas, 50g mixed peel, zest of 1 orange, 1 finely chopped apple and 1 tsp ground cinnamon. Knead into the dough and leave to rise for 1 hr, or until doubled in size 4 Divide the dough into 15 even pieces. Roll each piece into a smooth ball on a lightly floured work surface. Arrange the buns on one or two baking trays lined with parchment, leaving enough space for the dough to expand.
Cover (but don’t wrap) with more oiled cling film, or a clean tea towel, then set aside for one more hour. 5 Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Mix 75g plain flour with about 5 tbsp water to make the paste for the cross - add the water 1 tbsp at a time, so you add just enough for a thick paste. Spoon into a piping bag with a small nozzle. Pipe a line along each row of buns, then repeat in the other direction to create crosses. Bake for 20 mins on the middle shelf of the oven, until golden brown. 6 Gently heat 3 tbsp apricot jam to melt, then sieve to get rid of any chunks. While the jam is still warm, brush over the top of the warm buns and leave to cool.
Ingredients For the buns ● 300ml full-fat milk, plus 2 tbsp more ● 50g butter ● 500g strong bread flour ● 1 tsp salt ● 75g caster sugar ● 1 tbsp sunflower oil ● 7g sachet fast-action or easy-blend yeast ● 1 egg, beaten ● 75g sultanas ● 50g mixed peel ● zest 1 orange ● 1 appl, peeled, cored and finely chopped ● 1 tsp ground cinnamon
For the cross ● 75g plain flour, plus extra for dusting

Horoscopes
Aries (March 21-April 19)
If you are seeking counselling it could be that you will need to take time out of your busy schedule. You might be questioning things on a spiritual level, which means that you need to understand your inner self more and come to terms with your mental, physical and emotional limitations.
Taurus (April 20-May 20) Be careful with the pennies! You could be involved in a lot of different financial deals and you must be careful not to overspend on an agreed budget. In your personal financial affairs, you would be wise to pace yourself and buy only essentials.
Gemini (May 21-June 20) Big changes could be ahead! As a sensitive sign, you will be able to feel the unsettlement around you. Your relationships may require a re-boot or there could be an ending. In your career, there could be some uncomfortable times ahead.
Cancer (June 21-July 22) There are enjoyable times in store for Cancerians, particularly in affairs of the heart and in familial relationship matters. It is an excellent time to try for a baby as your compatibility with partners and spouses will be especially harmonious.
Leo (July 23-August 22) This could be a time of change, so don’t be surprised if an opportunity for advancement comes your way through work. The status of your personal relationships may also alter in some way. Everything that makes a difference to your circumstances is likely to be positive.
Virgo (August 23-September 22) You may feel the need to be mindful of both your health and working environment. A close friend may challenge your thinking in an unacceptable way and if you pull back from this relationship it may be no bad thing.
Libra (September 23-October 22) Don’t be surprised if you feel a bit tetchy and out of sorts. There are likely to be changes happening all around you and you are likely to find yourself standing still. Libra folk possess character traits that can both help and harm them.
Scorpio (October 23-November 21) You will be full of ideas as your creative juices flow. Others will listen to you and follow your lead. You usually sort things out as you go along, but nobody will know that. To others it will seem that you are highly organised and have everything already tried and tested.
Sagittarius (November 22-December 21) You may have to deal with physical issues - specifically, you could be subject to some form of joint pain. This could be caused by injury or simply bad posture. Either way, your shoulders, neck and knees are likely to be vulnerable. You might benefit from visiting your GP for advice.
Capricorn (December 22-January 19) At work, you may be undermined by someone who works alongside you. If this is the case, try not to be offended as this negativity is rooted in our colleague’s insecurity. Try not to let this bother you - it’s their problem - not yours!
Aquarius (January 20-February 18) This is an excellent time with regard to financial matters, with prosperity arriving through business or personal relationships. For those who get married, there are likely to be big material gains which come through the union.
Pisces (February 19-March 20) Tiredness may overcome you if you don’t take things easy. A few minor physical ailments could manifest themselves and you may find yourself in dire need of some TLC if you don’t listen to what your body is telling you. Minor niggles could well become major ones.
