When is the best time to buy presents?

Early! The closer we get to Christmas Eve, the busier the stores get and put the pressure to find a present is much greater.

Mornings are the best time to do your shopping. The store is more at your disposal in the morning, and it just makes for a nicer shopping experience where you can see the items more clearly.

Here’s an insider’s tip: if you’re shopping in a department store with a central escalator between the floors, start at the top. This floor is usually the least busy so you can get into the swing of browsing around without being pushed and pulled like you’re in a rush-hour tube station. It also means that you can more clearly see what is on the shop floor below you when you descend down the escalators - as opposed to mindlessly finding yourself stuck in the lingerie department, for example.

How much to spend

The key is to set yourself a budget, think what you can afford and always look at how to get the best price for each item.

UK households expect to splurge an average of £473.83 on presents this year, with £1.2 billion predicted to be spent across the nation. As a rule of thumb, Christmas present buying is about equality.

Spend the same on each child within a family, and between spouses. Between friends and relatives outside of close family, spend the amount that was gifted to you the previous Christmas.

How to choose the right present

The key to the perfect Christmas gift is to show the receiver that you have given their present your time and thought. Sometimes ordering online can seem last minute and a bit of an afterthought.

For the same reason that shopping online can seem like a cop-out, gift cards are a no-no. Gift cards are very quick and easy and convenient, but there is something about a personal gift where you know that person took some time and thought. No one is going to say no, but you don’t remember the Christmasses where you just got a gift card.

If you want to go full throttle for the personalised treatment, think about monogramming a dress shirt or a pair of socks. Otherwise think of exclusive, one-off items - Louboutin lipstick range, for example, that only comes out once a year.

Think about the likes and dislikes of the person you’re buying a gift for. Are they a wine enthusiast or keen on their gadgetry?

A weighty hardback book or a musky fragrance works well for men. Sophisticated gents out there with an eye for design might appreciate something from The Conran Shop, who specialise in unique lifestyle gifts.

One of the big sellers for Selfridges at Christmas are Diptyque candles. People love them because the scents aren’t too floral. They’re a bit more masculine and spicy, and when they burn out the holders are so pretty that they can be used as planters.

Kids can be a lot tougher to cater for – especially grumpy teens feeling a little self-conscious with all this embarrassing family time. Technology always works, so how about the idea of making a connection between something that you

might have received at Christmas when you were younger. For example, if they’re into photography, maybe go really special with an old-school camera to show them something that’s not from their generation.

For younger kids, the big toys to look our for this Christmas are LOL dolls - three-inch tall figurines that come covered in seven layers of paper and wrapping.

Children must delve through this extensive packaging to discover the surprise, small doll within.

Wrapping your presents

The biggest mistake people make is using too much paper. Cut down the paper to the absolute minimum you need - you can do that by wrapping it around the present - and really you should only have about a centimetre overlap.

Measure the wrapping paper out carefully before you start wrapping, taking into account this overlap.

However, if you get your measurements wrong, don’t have a Christmas Eve melt-down - ribbon covers a multitude of sins. Also, don’t be scared to use contrasting paper. Try working it into the design and have a contrasting stripe over where the hole should be. As long you have a colour scheme and it vaguely matches or contrasts it will look deliberate.

Follow in the footsteps of Blue Peter and invest in some double-sided tape when wrapping your gifts. It’s stronger than your average Cellotape, and it’s invisible so that annoying shine from the tape doesn’t highlight your lumbered attempts at covering up your wrapping sins. It can be fiddly, so best to only use it if you’re at intermediary level with your gift wrapping skills.

Health Matters EXTRA Staying well this Winter

We’re now well into the cold and flu season, so it’s very important to eat healthily in order to boost your immune system. It takes more than any one particular food, nutrient or supplement, but rather, a consistent and varied combination of foods high in antioxidants and compounds that enhance our immune function. Adequate rest and sleep, physical activity, hydration and good eating habits are also key factors in a healthy immune system.

Facts about colds

Healthy adults have about two colds per year, the common cold being an infection of the upper respiratory tract caused by a virus.

Cold weather isn’t a cause, but cold viruses tend to thrive in colder temperatures with less humidity and can survive for several hours on hands, tissues and hard surfaces so hand washing throughout the day is key.

Viruses can lie dormant in the body until they are triggered by a weakened immune system. Having a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, staying active and stress management are very important for keeping the body strong.

1. Vitamin C

Research has shown that consuming vitamin C can enhance immunity and impact the frequency, duration and severity of a cold.

Vitamin C is not made or stored in the body, so we need to consume a daily intake of foods rich in vitamin C. Major sources come from fruits and vegetables.

Best Food Sources: Bell peppers, kiwi, oranges, broccoli, strawberries, grapefruit, brussel sprouts, spinach, kale, orange juice.

2. Turmeric

Curcumin is the orange, yellow part of turmeric, which has been shown to possess powerful anti-inflammatory properties and can also help boost our body’s immune system.

Turmeric is best absorbed by the body when consumed with some black pepper and can be easily be sprinkled on foods such as chicken or fish when cooking, or added to vanilla yoghurt or tea.

3. Chicken soup

Chicken soup might just be the natural remedy you need at the very first signs of a cold, according to a handful of studies.

The warm broth soothes a sore throat and the other ingredients such as carrots, onion and garlic have anti-viral and antibacterial properties. Some research suggests that it may also exert an anti-inflammatory effect on the upper respiratory tract, reducing the duration of a cold.

Home-made Chicken soup

1 Whole roast chicken (or just use chicken thighs and legs) 6 medium carrots peeled and chopped 3 celery stalks chopped 1 small/ medium onion (leave it whole and then remove at the end of cooking) 1-32 oz container low sodium chicken broth 1 small can tomato sauce 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tsp minced ginger (optional) Fresh parsley Salt/Pepper to taste Noodles of choice Place chicken in a large soup pot and cover with broth and remainder with water to about an inch above the chicken. Bring to a boil and skim off residue at the top. Add garlic, ginger, onion, carrots, celery, and one small can of tomato sauce. Bring to a boil and then simmer for about an hour. When it is done, carefully remove the chicken to take off skin and slice.

4. Probiotics

According to a recent report by NHS Choices, regular consumption of good bacteria called probiotics found in yoghurt may help our immune system work better and improve digestion. It’s also a great source of Vitamin D, another nutrient involved in our immune health.

Best Food Sources: yoghurt, kefir, fresh sauerkraut, kombucha tea.

5. Vitamin D

Low levels of vitamin D can negatively impact the immune system’s ability to fight viruses and bacteria.

In winter, with fewer hours of sunlight, we may need to include more vitamin D in our diets.

Best Food Sources: rainbow trout, tuna light canned, halibut, sardines, salmon, fortified milk, egg yolks, mushrooms.

6. Green tea

Green tea contains antiviral properties (polyphenols) that help fight the influenza virus and stimulate the production and activity of specific cells associated with combatting viruses.

Think twice before adding milk, as the proteins bind to the polyphenols, preventing them from doing their job.

7. Echinacea

To boost the immune system, it may be helpful to take Echinacea at the first sign of a cold. It is recommended to take it until the symptoms go away, and for longer than three months.

It should not be used during pregnancy or while nursing. Consult your GP if you have diabetes or heart disease.

9. Exercise

Research supports the role of regular physical activity in keeping our immune systems strong.

Moving around helps to loosen built up mucus and fluids during the common cold, but it is not recommended in the event of a fever. Incorporate daily activity for prevention.

10. Zinc

Zinc is a key nutrient in boosting and enhancing our body’s immune response and helping to fight bacteria and viruses.

Zinc, in lozenge or syrup form, can be beneficial in reducing the duration and severity of the common cold if taken within 24 hours of onset of symptoms. Research has found that taking zinc reduced the duration of a common cold by an average of three days.

Best Food Sources: Oysters, beef, crab, lamb, pork, turkey, lobster, beans, wheat germ, fortified cereal.

8. Elderberry

Elderberries are an excellent source of vitamin C and vitamin A (beta-carotene).

Research has shown that flu symptoms were relieved an average of four days earlier when supplemented with elderberry syrup. Always check with your GP prior to supplementation, especially in children.

Action Outdoors has launched a new holiday program dedicated to young people aged 18 to 25, with over 30 per cent off holidays to Val d’Isere and Argentiere, near Chamonix. Turkey Porchetta with caramelised clementines

Method 1 Heat 1 tbsp oil in a frying pan over a medium-high heat and fry the shallot for 2 mins. Add the crushed garlic and fry for 1 min. Remove from the heat and stir in the breadcrumbs, fennel seeds, lemon zest and chopped herbs. Season; leave to cool. Preheat the oven to gas 5, 190°C, fan 170°C.

Best new cars for 2019 N

ext year promises to be a revolution for some of the best-known cars on the road.

Among the new models due to arrive in 2019 is an all-electric version of the Mini, a 21st century relaunch of the Land Rover Defender and a brand new Volkswagen Golf.

But the biggest trend next year is set to be the arrival of a wave of new electric cars. As well as Mini, you’ll also see Audi, Mercedes, Porsche, Honda and Polestar (Volvo’s electric car brand) launching battery-powered cars, the beginning of a new dawn in driving that will only continue to expand and improve over the next handful of years.

Mini EV

Price: from £35,000 (estimated)

Much has been made of the new electric Mini, which will be built at the company’s Oxford factory. And it’s fitting that the original city car should now be going green with the

arrival of the all-electric Mini EV in 2019. Not much is known about the batteries and motor but expect them to be similar to the system in BMW’s i3 (Mini is owned by BMW), giving the new car a range of around 190 miles.

The car is based on the design of the current Mini Hatchback, so it’s likely to look similar to the popular small car. However, it is likely to include some design features, including a distinctive grille, from the Mini electric concept car that was unveiled last year.

Toyota Corolla

Price: from £20,000 (estimated)

Slowly but surely, Toyota is shifting its cars on the internationally recognised official excitement scale (okay, we made that up) from ‘Watching paint dry’ to ‘Stepping onto the dancefloor’.

It was unveiled earlier this year as the new Auris but will actually revert to the Corolla name – nobody knew what an Auris was – and looks much more interesting, both outside and inside the family hatchback. The car will drop diesel power, instead offering petrol or petrol-electric hybrid only when it goes on sale early next year.

Crossover cars, which combine the mechanical parts of a small hatchback with the taller shape of an off-road car, are becoming more fashionable. In recent months we’ve had the Seat Arona, Citroen C3 Aircross and Kia Stonic, and next year, we’ll have the Skoda Vision X.

The new Honda CR-V actually arrives in the UK this autumn. It’ll have a 1.5-litre petrol engine and the option of seven, as well as five, seats. However, the model already setting tongues wagging is this hybrid version, comprising of a 2.0-litre petrol engine, two electric motors and a single fixed gear ratio, a system Honda calls Intelligent Multi Mode Drive (i-MMD).

Price: from £16,000 (estimated)

Smaller than the Karoq crossover, the Vision X is intended to look more stylish than both. The concept had a hybrid system so we expect that to appear in the production model, along with a choice of petrol and diesel engines.

Land Rover Defender

Price: from £30,000 (estimated)

Replacing the original Defender with an all-new model fit for the 21st century has been no easy task. The DC100 concept car, above, was unveiled in 2011 and mixed reactions sent Land Rover back to the drawing board. It’s now been two years since production of the old car ceased and potential rivals haven’t been slow in coming forward, including a new Jeep Wrangler and a privately-funded start-up company that’s aiming to produce the modern equivalent of a Defender.

So, in 2019, expect the new Defender to be revealed.

Rumours are that it will be even better off-road than before and have a close family resemblance to Range Rover models.

Price: from £30,000 (estimated)

The new model will arrive in 2019 with a job on its hands, because there’ll be no diesel-powered CR-V. The efficient new hybrid version is intended to replace it. With sales of new diesel cars plunging, it’s perhaps not such a tall order – as long as Honda gets the new model’s pricing right. What won’t help is that there will be no seven-seat option with the hybrid model.

Seat’s seven-seat SUV could provide a new level of luxury and technology when it goes on sale at the end of this year. It’s tipped to be fitted with a fully digital dashboard (including the dials behind the steering wheel) as standard, and is said to offer class-leading quality. Combined with the promise of nimble and comfortable performance, it could be a compelling alternative to the Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe, Skoda Kodiaq, and even the Land Rover Discovery Sport.

Combating seasonal sadness

H

ave you noticed your mood change with the change in weather and shorter daylight hours? You’re not alone - a study by the Weather Channel and You Gov found that over 57% of adults say their overall mood is worse in the winter compared to the summer months.

As the the nights begin drawing in, many gyms notice a decline in active members as many opt to go home to their pyjamas instead.

However, one of the most effective treatments for combating seasonal affective disorder (S.A.D.) is exercise - this is because working out releases endorphins and serotonin (mood elevating chemicals) into the body.

Understandably it’s much harder to motivate yourself in colder weather, but you can boost your motivation by eating a balanced diet, rich in fruit, vegetables, proteins and grains, ensuring you drink plenty of water (the recommended daily amount is 6-8 glasses or 2.5 litres) and get enough sleep.

It is estimatred that you should aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. This can have a profound effect on your mood, and the release of feel-good chemicals also improves blood flow to the brain, clearing away toxins and oxygenating the brain cells, helping you think more clearly.

Minimising stress for pets at Christmas During the Christmas period, our homes are often filled with people paying a visit, or we are travelling to visit people ourselves. As a result, this can be a very stressful time, especially for pets, who don’t actually understand why the situation has changed. If your pet becomes stressed, it can make the situation more stressful for yourself. It is vital to ensure your pet is happy during this time, which means it is important to prevent them from becoming stressed.

Here is some advice on how to manage your pet’s stress this Christmas.

Provide them with a safe place

Even the most sociable of pets can become stressed when there is too much noise, which means it is important to give your pet somewhere for them to go and relax, if they need to. This place should be away from the main entertaining space, and should include their favourite blanket and toys to make them feel safe.

Keep small children at bay

Your pet may be perfectly behaved around children usually, but very young children can be an annoyance to pets, especially when parents aren’t fully concentrating on what their child is doing. To prevent your pet becoming stressed or annoyed by small children, it may be better to just keep them separate.

Ensure they get enough exercise

Exercise can work wonders for reducing your pet’s stress, especially dogs, and going for a walk can help to calm them as they are temporarily removed from the stressful situation.

This means that, even on Christmas Day, it is important to remove yourself from the festivities and take your pet outside for a short walk or just to play, in order to help reduce their stress levels.

Provide them with plenty of toys

Keeping your pet distracted is another great way to prevent them from becoming stressed. If they have enough toys to keep occupied, they are less likely to be bothered by what is happening around them. Food and treat mazes are a good way of keeping dogs occupied for hours, and chew and scratch toys are great for helping pets to alleviate any stress and frustration that they do feel.

Include them in the festivities

This may sound as if it goes against all other advice, but in some cases it is the best option. Pets may become stressed and frustrated if they feel they are being pushed aside because of what else is going on. To avoid this, you should introduce your pet to every guest that comes into the house, allowing them to explore and familiarise themselves with whoever is coming into their home. Leaving the door open for your pet to walk in and out as they wish will also reduce stress, as your pet won’t feel as they are being shut away from something they aren’t allowed to participate in.

Get it used to any new surroundings

If you are travelling to visit people over the Christmas period and have to take your pet, you should try to familiarise them with the new settings before the hustle and bustle of the main event. The combination of lots of new people and new surroundings can cause your pet to become nervous and stressed. If you cannot avoid taking your pet, try to arrive a little earlier than other guests so your pet can become comfortable in the new setting first.

Neighbourhood Corner Hello Readers, Wow Christmas is nearly upon us and the nights have drawn in! For many of us it is a time we can all enjoy with family and friends, however it is also a stark reminder of the loneliness and sadness it can bring to those that live alone, so remember to look out for a neighbour and maybe now is the time to get to know who they are?

With the changing season I would like to give you some timely reminders. Autumn/Winter is a time when, if given the opportunity, criminals will be especially active so it is a time that we all have be vigilant and keep this time of year a safe and happy one for all of us.

Here are a few tips to help you: • When shopping keep any Christmas presents out of sight in the boot. Take any valuables or electrical items such as mobile phones and sat navs with you.

• Park in well-lit areas, in an attended car park or look for the park mark award logo for a safe parking environment.

• Those presents look lovely under the tree but if seen from outside they can look lovely to a burglar too!!

Keep presents out of view!!

• If you are going on holiday use timers to operate lights and radios and remember to cancel milk and paper deliveries. Ask a neighbour to keep an eye on the house.

• Mark your property with ultra violet markers, write your postcode and house number on the back of the item.

• If going out for a drink during the festivities then know your limits and please don’t get picked up by us or the ambulance service. Have a soft drink in between the alcoholic drinks.

• Have a designated driver take you to those parties – losing your licence, a huge fine and a possible prison sentence are on no-one’s Christmas list!! – Don’t drink and drive!!

Remember – think about your safety, the safety of others and the safety of your property.
