Introduction
The one thing that I know I can be very proud of is the determination of our staff and students to keep going with remote learning to reproduce virtually all of our curriculum during the lockdown: UCAS, mock interviews, assemblies, talks, the medical programme, personal tutor sessions, careers advice, and many other things, were kept going with enthusiasm alongside the normal timetable. To follow are just a few of the events that helped us keep going during the last year: in early March we held our first Alumni Homecoming event. We then held our Graduation Ceremony in June—completely online. It was an occasion to get together to beat the virus! In October and again in December the College hosted a chamber concert in which we welcomed the same quartet, the Corran. This year we also expanded our Medical and Lifesciences programme to include more work on virology, immunology and infectious diseases and pledged three 100% scholarships to the children of keyworkers during the pandemic. To say that 2020 and the early part of 2021 were challenging, sounds somewhat obvious That said, it is important that we all recognise the devastation wrought by COVID and why we must remember those whose lives were stolen by the virus. But storms, no matter how terrible and devastating, do not last for ever, and there is always hope. With this in mind, I have a responsibility as Founder and Principal of the College to instil a sense of cautious optimism and hope in all our students. Things will slowly get back to normal, and whilst we must never forget those whose lives have been lost, equally, we must celebrate those who put their lives at risk to keep us all safe, teachers included.

Memory over matter. Having a great memory is often perceived as an elusive magic trick—which only few can master. It’s daunting to try to remember everything you have learned throughout the year, and regurgitate it in an examination room. The way in which you tackle your revision can bear great influence to how well you do in your examinations. We took a look at how our brain stores memory and how to master it with our now semi-retired ex VicePrincipal and Examinations Officer, Mr Michael Kahn. Mr Kahn believes ‘we memorise what we want to memorise,’ he says. ‘While I have a factual recall of Chemistry, Switzerland and all things Tottenham Hotspur that some people find scary, I wouldn't recall five minutes after saying goodbye to someone what colour shirt or blouse they were wearing. Should you trust your gut instinct? Albert Einstein once said “the only real valuable thing is intuition”. Most of us will have experienced that our “gut” is telling us something is not quite right. In both professional and social situations, executives will be forced to take tough decisions and the input from “gut instinct” should not be ignored, but rather factored into the decision-making process depending on context, complexity and experience. Before we explore this further, it is important to distinguish between two key words, instinct and intuition, as they are often confused.
