Described in a major publication as a “New West” artist, David DeVary uses symbols of the American West to express universal emotions and themes in his artwork, portrayed with “attitude.”
He surrounds his contemporary cowboys and cowgirls with silver, gold, and copper metallic leaf so that the images become more of a romanticized icon rather than a depiction of the reality of a particular person, place or time. The artist contrasts the gloss and glitter of the metallics with layers of glazes and other mediums to add texture
and grit, giving the work an earthly and familiar feel. David’s unique style of portraiture has set his artwork apart for decades—earning recognition and accolades along with a very large following.
In the catalog that accompanied DeVary’s solo exhibition at the Booth Western Art Museum in 2008, Seth Hopkins, Executive Director, writes: “His images remind us of why we love the West, as a real place and as a daydream destination. He offers hope that when we travel out there, via motorcycle or imagination, we will encounter the cowboys and cowgirls that inhabit his paintings, or perhaps find our own guardian angel.”

David’s work is incredibly versitile, effertlessly blending into both modern and more rustic interiors. The colors, energy and bold lines translate with a timeless quality.
