ASET Assessment For Certification And Registration

What is ASET? Before you know about the ASET assessment, first know what this organization is.

The full form of ASET is the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta. Its short-form ASET is used colloquially. It is a self-governing and not-for-profit organization in the Alberta province of Canada.

The purpose of this professional association is the promotion of applied science and engineering technology professionals in the industry, educational institutions, the public and the government. It assesses the qualifications of those aspirants who apply for certification and issues professional credentials accordingly. ASET works as an advocate for the profession to governments and the general public. The assessing organization also provides benefits and services to its members and their employers.

1. ASET assessment:

ASET includes a panel of professional members that assesses applications for certification and registers engineering and applied science technicians and technicians fulfilling set Canadian criteria in education and experience.

The following are the post-nominal designations conferred by ASET: 1. C.Tech. or certified technician: Certified Technician is a Canadian professional title provided on the basis of work experience and academic qualifications. The short form is C.Tech.

Most of the Canadian provincial engineering and applied science technology associations issue this certification. They are related to a Certified Engineering Technologist and have the same professional association.

2. Certified Engineering Technologist or C.E.T.: ASET manages certification. A certified engineer is bound by a particular code of ethics and rules of professional and some bylaws and regulations.

Apart from certification, ASET can provide a ‘Professional Technologist’ designation, making the designation holder capable of practicing engineering within the scope of practice mentioned by a board of examiners.

Not like other provinces, Alberta authorizes the creation of ASET and the regulation of the title of Engineering Technologist in their Engineering and Geoscience Professions act.

3. Professional Technologist or P.Tech.: ASET is Alberta’s independent certifying authority for engineering/applied science technicians and technologists.

The assessing organization provides the post-nominal designation of C.E.T. to the engineering technologist fulfilling the certification requirements. It means the status as a Certified Engineering Technologist who has fulfilled criteria agreed upon all over Canada.

Apart from that designation, ASET along with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta maintains a P.Tech.

(Eng.) certification, which over and above the designation of C.E.T. offers a limited license to practice professional engineering within a limited scope.

The member who has attained this designation has the right to independently practice engineering or geoscience within a specified scope of practice that is the routine application of industry-recognized codes, criteria, procedures and practices using set engineering or applied science principles and ways of problem-solving as mentioned by the ASET/APEGA Joint Board of Examiners.

The designation of Professional Technologist is written into the provincial act concerning professional engineering, the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act of Alberta.

Particularly, a ‘professional technologist’ is an individual with a certificate of registration issued by the ASET Registrar as per this act to partake in the practice of engineering or geoscience within the scope of practice mentioned by the Joint Board of Examiners.

P.Tech. (Eng.) the license allows its holder to work independently and stamp their own work showing that they bear the responsibility for the task they have done. The scope of practice for P.Tech will become narrower and more prescribed than the defined practice scope for a professional License holder (P.L.).

Format of the technical report for ASET assessment:

The report must align with the ASET technical report guidelines and have the following: Properly documented references to current technical literature to show a full subject understanding.

Appropriate photos, diagrams, illustrations and tables.

Proper sizing in an 8.5 x 11-inch format, double-spaced and one-sided with one-inch minimum margins.

Suitable elements of a technical report.

Helpful data and calculations are included in appendices and annexes to the report.

Footnoted statements of engineering/applied science fact to demonstrate the statement basis.
