They say if you can remember it, you weren't there!

Two plays. One an imaginary meeting between Dylan Thomas and Brendan Behan in a Fitzrovia pub. The other is Caitlin Thomas reminiscing after the untimely death of her husband.

This is the tale of Hana, a young girl who moves from where she was born in London, to the Kent coast. They discover a wonderful area called Prince's Parade which is full of amazing animals, has a beautiful canal and is right next to the sea too! By buying this book you will be helping to protect it. All profits from it will be donated to the Save Prince's Parade campaign which aims to halt plans to develop the area into a housing estate.

Very funny, and surreal story about a man and a woman on their first date: Bolton Brady and Veda, set in London, November 2001. Bolton is forty, not into assets, has never lived with a woman and looked into the future and seen loneliness. So he decides to do something about it. He advertises in a lonely-hearts column, and receives six replies, but after experiencing one disaster after another only Veda remains between him and his sanity. As the day unfolds the line between reality and fantasy becomes blurred, building to a surreal, yet poignant, conclusion.

This walk through the history of Sandgate to the present day was first performed at the Chichester Hall a decade ago on Wednesday, 9th June. It is now available on Kindle or in paperback.

The Sandgate Society is delighted to promote the well-deserved KALC Community Award 2020 which has been Awarded to Leonie Wootton for her work in our community, as it states: “Leonie has worked tirelessly with volunteers to create a community vegetable garden in the grounds of Saga in Sandgate, encouraging residents to sample the produce and then grow their own”.

This “seed” of an idea originated when Saga approached The Sandgate Society for help in the community to use the space of their kitchen garden. One of the members, Leonie was known to be a keen gardener and the rest is history.

Not only has Leonie built up her family of volunteers in the grounds of Saga, but, with the support of the Sandgate Parish Council, she has expanded the volunteering to look after Edible Eats in planters around Sandgate High Street and the Golden Valley, where residents are encouraged to help themselves to the produce (herbs etc) grown there.

As Leonie says “If it had not been for Saga wishing to start the garden in the first place, the support of The Parish Council, the Sandgate Society, the volunteers, and the visiting locals, the award would not have happened - and so it is to all of us that this award belongs.”

And it doesn’t finish there – Leonie’s team have recently been awarded the RHS Britain in Bloom, in recognition of how important community gardens are, and how valuable their work is in such difficult times as they have experienced this year, and they are already working on moving up to the next 16

higher award. They are applying to open the garden with the National Garden Scheme, and actively looking at how they can improve the garden for all involved and make it a real asset to Sandgate.

And there is more: the Gardens are pleased to welcome a home-schooled child every week, and very recently, an invitation to register the garden with the NHS as a place to come and work in place of being prescribed pills - a social prescription, where people who are troubled can come with a key worker to get their hands dirty in the open air, in a lovely setting, in a working garden. This really has to be the icing on the cake, and we are so hoping we will get the opportunity to make this work - but there is still much to be done.

Weekly newsletters are published to the community, including members of the Sandgate Society who pass on the news far and wide, with Facebook and Instagram creating more awareness.

Leonie and her team are keen to promote the growing of what they call 'real, slow grow, organic, seasonal food' that has holes in various places, a bit of muck attached, sometimes a bit wonky, and the odd bug'! It is not rocket science, but can often make a world of difference, and already has made a difference to many of us that frequent the community garden.

This year has created quite a few challenges for everyone, but luckily Covid could not put a stop to growing food, or taking outdoor exercise, so they thrived.

We all hope that the KALC award can now be used to help promote the garden and advertise what they do and help people to realise what potential the garden could have in the longer term for our community.
