The Sandgate Society archive team have been working for several years on a project to digitise and put on-line our extensive archive of documents and photographs. The project preserves and safe keeps this physical archive and transforms visitor access by storing it on the web so that it is only a ‘click’ away. We are pleased to say that we have now achieved this and proudly invite you to visit our new archive website. https:// sandgatesociety.com/archive. We are also delighted to now be included in the National Archives – a prestigious honour and we can now be sourced globally through this medium. The digital archive will take you on a journey through the history of Sandgate village from its own Castle, built by Henry V111 between 1539-1540 and visited by Queen Elizabeth 1; the thriving shipbuilding industry started in the 1700s; to the Napoleonic Wars and two World Wars, including a local Victoria Cross recipient. Add to this tales of smugglers and underground passages and over 30 pubs combined with a rich heritage of buildings and a cast of historical figures who have lived in the village, including H G Wells, William Wilberforce and Sir John Moore, and you have an archive which is well worth visiting!
