The Sandgate Society archive team have been working for several years on a project to digitise and put on-line our extensive archive of documents and photographs. The project preserves and safe keeps this physical archive and transforms visitor access by storing it on the web so that it is only a ‘click’ away.

We are pleased to say that we have now achieved this and proudly invite you to visit our new archive website. https:// sandgatesociety.com/archive.

We are also delighted to now be included in the National Archives – a prestigious honour and we can now be sourced globally through this medium.

The digital archive will take you on a journey through the history of Sandgate village from its own Castle, built by Henry V111 between 1539-1540 and visited by Queen Elizabeth 1; the thriving shipbuilding industry started in the 1700s; to the Napoleonic Wars and two World Wars, including a local Victoria Cross recipient. Add to this tales of smugglers and underground passages and over 30 pubs combined with a rich heritage of buildings and a cast of historical figures who have lived in the village, including H G Wells, William Wilberforce and Sir John Moore, and you have an archive which is well worth visiting!

Help us to save Prospect Cottage

We are delighted to announce an exciting partnership between Art Fund, Creative Folkestone and Tate to save and preserve Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, the home and garden of visionary filmmaker, artist and activist, Derek Jarman.

Prospect Cottage continues to be a site of pilgrimage for people from all over the world who come to be inspired by its stark beauty and by Jarman’s legacy. Without this public appeal, Prospect Cottage is at risk of being sold privately, its contents dispersed, and artistic legacy lost.

With your help a total of ÂŁ3.5m needs to be raised by 31 March 2020 to help purchase Prospect Cottage, which will enable continued free public access to the cottage's internationally celebrated garden, the launch of an artist residency programme, and a programme of guided visits within the cottage itself.

Major grants from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund, the Linbury Trust, and private donations have already taken the campaign half-way towards its target. Art Fund is now calling on the public to make donations of all sizes to raise the funds still needed.

Two plays. One an imaginary meeting between Dylan Thomas and Brendan Behan in a Fitzrovia pub. The other is Caitlin Thomas reminiscing after the untimely death of her husband.

This is the tale of Hana, a young girl who moves from where she was born in London, to the Kent coast. They discover a wonderful area called Prince's Parade which is full of amazing animals, has a beautiful canal and is right next to the sea too! By buying this book you will be helping to protect it. All profits from it will be donated to the Save Prince's Parade campaign which aims to halt plans to develop the area into a housing estate.

This walk through the history of Sandgate to the present day was first performed at the Chichester Hall a decade ago on Wednesday, 9th June. It is now available on Kindle or in paperback.

Funding Available The Hythe Institute Fund considers applications for funding from local organisations including schools, scouts and guide groups, sports clubs and the trustees of local halls and facilities; who may require funds for maintenance or improvements.

The recipients must be in the Hythe parish (including Hythe, Seabrook, Saltwood, Palmarsh, Lympne and Newingreen).
